Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
I was definitely planning something as I landed about a mile (1.6k?) away from the first trench.

Go for it then, by all means - don't let your fail-at-deadlines GM slow you down. Just remember that thing about the second trench-line.

Awesome. That was more or less how I envisioned it. I'd place my character on the original UP trench line, where her ship crashed. I will advance her now, somewhere to Radisons left flank.
EDIT: Oh yeah, Orion by Metallica just kicked in. I feel so badass.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
@Elric: Yeah you can, however keep in mind that the UP will be rushing that trench as soon as the bunker falls. That is, to put it bluntly, NOW. Just be careful where those cocktails land, eh? As in, if you look at the map don't have your character throw them in the general area of the bunker. Or we can always have a case of friendly-fire, if you so wish....
@Dio: Nice post. My GM sense is tickling though and I noticed a couple of things I didn't quite like. Two actually, details mostly. I'll post them here so other people don't repeat the same mistake.
1) Realistically speaking, even in a full-scale attack the original UP trench line wouldn't be "deserted". You still have reserves, medics and field hospitals, staff officers running back and forth. After all, the smaller units like platoons and companies may be moving onwards. But the battalion and regimental HQ's would still be where they were (meaning all personnel is still there). They'll move once the battle is finished. However, I see what you wanted to do there, so you can just say that in the area you crashed there didn't seem to be anything of note. Maybe far-off figures in the distance?
2) About the bunker exploding. It's a loud battle with stuff going BOOOM all over the place (even if they're not overly focused in our area). That and, in general, a bunker is a solid building - it won't yield to a single grenade. By all means, a blast will kill the soldiers inside, but it won't destroy it. To put it simply, I don't think the pillar of smoke is necessary, nor the loud explosion. Why don't you change it to something like a "muffled" blast (that's how I described it in the post I'm writing now)? And after the shots stop your character can put two and two together.
As I said, it's not really a big deal, but hey as they say "the devil is in the details."
ALSO: my post is still coming along....had another busy day today. It will be coming tomorrow FOR SURE. Sowwwwy.

Okay, I'll edit it. I did say in my post that I didn't actually see what happened to the bunker, just that a grenade went off in that area, but I get what you mean.

OK, cool. Don't get me wrong, I'm not some high-horse my way or the highway type (most of the time ), I just have this general vision of "how things are supposed to look" and want to stick to it. I won't mess with your artistic freedom...much.

It isn't like I have real molotovs. Given that they are distilled alcohol with a bit of gas mixed in, it would be more like smoke screen for a minute or two.

I've posted, apologies in advance for any typos I could have done - I spell checked it but might have missed something.
I'll toss you guys a chart of the third and fourth trench line, but not today - not really in the mood for that. It'll be coming some time tomorrow, giving you an idea of what to expect.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
I didn't notice any errors in your post Blackrock, but I wasn't really looking for them either
On a similar note, however, I'd just like to say now that, being pretty new around here, I would really appreciate any pointers as we go along. So if anyone sees something that's a little (or a lot) off in my writing, please let me know so I can fix it. I'm hoping to, over the course of this RP, leech off of all of your skills, if you all don't mind

One question before I post Blackrock. Can we have been involved in taking the bunker before making our way over to you? Or should we be part of the reserves still running up the hill?

Yeah, you can pretty much be anyone from the many nameless recruits my guy sees. (nameless to him anyway) Or you can be with the reserves, whatever works. The map is coming tomorrow....I'm fucking dead today.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
I hope I did also not step too far in my assumptions in this post as well. I didn`t know if it would be appropriate for a recruit to approach a ranking officer without being addressed.
I also did not know what the trenches were made out of. Since this was advanced warfare, I assumed it was some kind of stone hallways sort of thing, but I wasn`t sure. Therefore I used non specific terms in case it was made out of dirt, or something else.
I also wasn`t sure how strong the armor was (especially second hand recruit armor). I decided that it wasn`t impossible for it the be penetrated by repeated blows from a bayonnet weilded by a steriod abusing TL soldier. Correct me if this is stupid.
I`m pretty sure I will need to edit something in my post.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
All right i get it now. I just didn't think there'd be one bunker keeping down hoards of UP squadrons. Which is why i just assumed there may've been a couple. Maybe if we substitute my definition of 'Bunker' in my post, with the phrase 'Secondary field MG placement' it may be better? Maybe they're just holed up in really good cover. I don't know. But that layout really 'does' help a bit. Thanks for that, I'm a very visual person and made much more sense....
anyhow, i'll have a post ready ASAP.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Right, time to address a couple of things. Sorry for the wait.
As promised, here comes the map. Finally you can find it here (direct link as usual, seeing as its too big for the forum).
It provides a view of the second, third and fourth lines of TL trenches. The second trench I think is clear for you guys, so I'll move on. Between the second and third you can see an empty patch of land (read: killing field), it's supposed to be smaller than the field our characters just crossed/are crossing at the moment. About 300-400 meters, terrain is growing steeper. The two platoons (Radisson and Kirenko's) operating in that area will be making the assault any minute now, so to speak; in my next post. Naturally, the clueless recruits are tagging along or are ALREADY going for the hill.
You can see a bunker in the third trench-line, it's smaller than the one which was just taken out. But the machine-gun inside is as dangerous as the previous one. You have TL soldiers in the trenches themselves naturally. Now, where it gets interesting: unlike the first and second, the third and fourth lines of trenches are connected with each other. Don't forget that this is just part of the hill, where our guys are fighting, the fortifications continue further westwards (to the left). The whole base is bigger, sharing a similar layout of tightly packed artillery positions, bunkers and trenches.
Right, artillery. I've marked them as "A" on the map. The sort of squares that form between the trenches are where the artillery is housed. The TL didn't have enough time to properly fortify the whole place, so the canons themselves are fairly easy to get to...you just have to pass through the trenches and squads of TL soldiers along the way. I think that covers all of it.
Now, about questions.
@Spectre About the bunker keeping down the "hordes', bear in mind that this is just the flank of the TL defensive lines. They won't be facing the same amount of pressure as they will on the center; there ARE a lot of Legion soldiers running about (especially recruits), but I wouldn't use hordes to describe them As for the bunker itself, I think it is fairly reasonable that it was able to hold the assualt at bay, at least for a while. The open field in front, the experienced gunner, the overall lack of organisation of the UP assault; not to mention the supporting TL soldiers and somewhat elevated position gave them a good enough chance. It's all over now, thanks to Dani's lucky redhead though
@Dio
1) The trenches are ye olde dirt. With supports here and there of course, metal most probably. See, the idea is that this base wasn't fortified up to par of TL standards (one of the officers will comment on that AFTER the battle...) and as such, it's something we can expect from nowadays fortifications. The other bases will be formed differently though, you'll see that soon enough...
2)Yeah armour...I thought I made it clear enough: YOU BLOODY GREENHORNS DON'T GET ANY ARMOUR OR SPECIALISED WEAPONS! Just the second-hand rifle, green beret and jumpsuit. Something like this (I know it's a pilot costume, not infantry - but that's as close to the Recruit uniforms as I imagined). So yeah, you'll have to find some way around that. When you finish with the hill, THEN you get proper equipment and get to be epic and stuff.
Hope that clears it up. As usual, if I'm unclear (which I probably am, I wrote this post in two parts, forcefully split by RL) ask away.

Yeah, the dudes with black armour are regular Legionaries, men who have passed their trial by fire and are officially part of the Legion. The TL guys wear a mix of white and grey, depending on what unit they are with and stuff.
And yeah, the talking part is fine. I'll work on that in my next post, but it's not coming just yet.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
I am thinking of salvaging one of the TL machine guns. It shouldn't be that much different to use, but it is up to you if you want it unusable. In which case I will have my character determine this.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
No, I won't allow that. Two reasons for this, IC and OOC. I'll look at the IC one first:
The bunkers are being secured by Legion soldiers, not recruits, but regular, hardened fighting men. They won't allow some random recruit to just make off with an MG they could put to later use. And even if they do move it during the battle, it will be handled by someone who has proven their mettle.
The OCC reason is quite simple: I don't want you guys to be powerful. I don't want you to make a difference. Understand this simple fact, it's going to be the way I steer the RP in. Yes, you'll get your cool equipment down the road and yes, you'll pack a punch, but for now - your goal is surviving.

Alrighty, seeing a lull in the conversation, I though I might share a couple more articles I found.

So, there they be, for your amusement. Have fun!

Yes, yes I do spend the majority of my spare time finding and reading such things as these, as well as much more random stuff.
Don't judge me.
Also, I have no idea how folks do that thing where they put a link in their post, but as a word or phrase instead of having it show as the URL. How does that work?

Relax guys, I haven't abandoned you, I didn't put a week of my life into writing all that info on the first page just to toss aside the RP even before we got past the prologue!
I'm currently waiting for Spectre to post, I'll prod him with a PM and see where that takes us.
-----------
Also, to answer Crimson's question: [url=insert address here]Type word here[/url]
So, to give an example the link to this page would be this (you can quote my post to see it for yourself)

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Well, since we are waiting, I was thinking of throwing some of my ideas out now. I am assuming there will be at least another machine gun nest if not more, and that the artillery will probably be tasked to pounding the trenches. Also, I was wondering if a localized or wide spread counter attack to be pounding over the no-man zone as an immediate response might both be an interesting change of pace, and characterize the enemy commander somewhat. Also, beating it off and following the retreating men back in would be a good way to storm the next set of trenches.
I was thinking also thinking of some intermediate fighting in no man's land using the molotov cocktails as a smoke screen, and having the squad leaders think similarly. Or using the molotov cocktails to help storm a trench and use it as a shock tactic.
Can you give me any clues for me to start thinking about writing with blackrock?

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Bleh, sorry for the wait. Life has been gangbanging me lately
I'd hate to pull the "there's a plot reason" card, but the situation is just that. The TL are firmly on the defensive at this point and, when our guys take over the hill, they'll notice that not everything is up-to par to TL standards. It will be explained in time, so don't worry about it yet.
I see the molotovs used as a shock-tactic. They sound unconventional enough, such a makeshift thing will probably surprise the defenders. Specifically though, you can use them as you see fit. The Legion troops are already quite weary from this fight, so they'll push on to the last line of trenches. The MG nest is up for grabs, maybe you can use one of the molotovs to hinder it (smoke, etc.)....other options are, of course available.
That's what I can say at the moment, if it's not clear - shoot again.
In other news, I've yet to hear from Spectre, he hasn't had the time to even read my PM apparently. I assume life is busy for him and will wait on for a bit more, but I will move this thing before long.
