I'm at the unit right now having a pre-drill cigarette, just thought I'd stop in and say I'm still on board when everyone is ready.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Heads up from me guys - I'm fucking busy lately, got two maths tests coming in about two weeks, both of them are one after another (as in one is on the 9th, the second on the 10th); so yeah, I'm gearing up for those, there's a lot of stuff to cover. Meaning, if I have the free time, I'll cook a post up for you; if not - then I'll have to ask you all to postpone this thing for a bit. :/

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Yo guys, a little Legionary told me that he noticed a new post in the IC thread. Ahem.
Here's a direct link to the roughly sketched map, as usual. It's not as important as the other maps, as this is fairly large-scale and only focused on the part of the trench were my guy and the lieutenant were. You can be anywhere else you like, either to the left or right (keeping in mind that the left would be more clustered and hectic, as that's where the centre of the battle is). Or you can follow the trail of destruction and simply come upon my squad; as always - it's up to you. If you have any questions, you know where to find me.
A note on the "computer" mentioned in the post. Imagine it a as a flat case, not too large, about the size of a sheet of paper. Keyboard and any other input devices would be handled holographically, as well as the display itself. Neat, huh?
I'm also going to, finally, update the technology section. Quite soon, if not today - then on Friday, as I'll be out of town tomorrow.

Probably going to be at least 7 days before I can get a post up. Really busy this week. I may add a bit to my CS (getting that lacking feeling after re-reading it), so I will keep up to date when one or the other happens.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
No worries buddy, it's not like I haven't taken my sweet time with this thing, so a delay of a week or two won't be much problem to me.
Also, I've finally updated the Technology section, instead of making you guys read through everything again, I've simply copy-pasted the new stuff in this post. Some of the stuff repeat themselves, but hopefully - this should give you a better idea of how weapons function. If anything's unclear, you know what to do. (PM Blackrock, amirtie?!)

Some of the stuff repeat themselves, but hopefully - this should give you a better idea of how weapons function. If anything's unclear, you know what to do. (PM Blackrock, amirtie?!)
Weapons
- Spoiler:
- PFR-15 “Defender”
The standard weapon across Legion personnel, favoured for its durability and wide range of modification. The stock version can hold up to 60 bullets in its magazine. It is fuelled by a kinetic-powered battery, which is designed to power itself as a soldier moves across the battlefield. As each bullet requires a relatively small amount of energy to be used by the propelling mechanism in the rifle, the battery can usually supply enough power even if the user is stationary.
PFR-12 Carbine “Sentinel”
A lighter version of the PFR-15, it is designed with medics and engineers in mind. Its smaller size and lighter weight allow the soldier to perform their main activities undisturbed, while giving them enough firepower to contribute in a fight. It has a shorter ranger than the PFR-15, but can be modified in much the same way; in addition magazines between the two models are interchangeable, which ensures it remains a popular choice.
PFR-15 L “Sentry”
The sniper version of the PFR-15. Equipped with a scope, a basic guiding-tracking system (in stark contrast to the advanced programs, the League use) and a longer barrel, it is designed for distant, surgical shots. The propelling system has been altered with this concept in mind, using the tried and tested bolt-action mechanism, popular since the days of ancient Earth. In practice, this means that each shot puts a much greater strain on the weapon’s batteries. As a result, it is not uncommon for snipers to run out of “juice” during missions. To prevent this, the PFR-15L comes equipped with a spare battery, which is to be used should the main one cease to function. On average, it has been estimated that a battery should provide enough power for about 10 shots.
Due to the longer trajectory of the shots and the accuracy desired, the weapon uses custom-made bullets, of a much higher quality than what can be produced on the field with a “bullet-maker”. The PFR-15L can use both types of ammunition, but snipers prefer to use the “proper” bullets whenever possible. Due to the expensive nature of mass producing ammunition, such types of bullets are rare and aren’t immediately offered to inexperienced marksmen.
PFR-15 H “Bulwark”
The heavy version of the Legion’s standard PFR-15. Like the base model, it functions in the exact same way, the only difference being in the size of the projectile fired and the weapon itself. The “Bulwark” is slightly bulkier, with a bigger magazine, which is intended to hold larger ammunition; as well as an increase to the barrel’s diameter. The result is that the weapon requires a specialised “bullet-maker”, which isn’t always easy to come across. Thus, many soldiers fielding heavy weapons are forced to rely on the squad’s engineer for ammunition.

- (Courtesy of DeadEye)
Appearance: (“the top of the arm” refers the side that is in line with your knuckles, the bottom refers to the side in line with your palm)
It's an arm mounted device that operates on it's own platform. The forearm section adds about 2 inches of bulk on top, while the bottom adds about half as much. A half-spherical battery pack (2 inch diameter) attaches just above the elbow, near the tricep muscle. Additional batteries are normally stored on a belt, or in a pouch just like extra ammunition. The device joints at the elbow, and again at the wrist, with insulated wiring covers to protect the internal parts from dust, moisture, etc. The wrist joint is worn as a separate 'glove' that houses button-switches for several of the tool's apparatuses. The top of the device houses hardware-centric functions while the bottom houses software-centric functions.
The user doesn't need to be in full battle gear to use it. When worn in full combat gear, it doesn't get in the way of body armor, except for what is normally worn on the elbow. It attaches to the user's arm via a very tight adhesive 'sleeve' that is put on before the device itself. This sleeve keeps the device from slipping off or side to side, but can irritate the user's arm when worn for extended periods. Because of this, male operators tend to shave their arm hair, as the under-sleeve can stick to, tangle, and otherwise be generally uncomfortable to hair. TL models are starting to lean towards a non-irritant paint-on adhesive that almost literally glues the device to the operator's arm. A series of valves releases a neutralizer agent which breaks down the adhesive when the device needs to be removed, and allegedly smells very pleasant. Research efforts are being made to actually implant nodes inside of the users arm to serve as attachment anchors as well as better synchronize the device's functions with the user's movements. The UP has recognized this step, but doesn't employ it due to high cost, while TL scientists are working out bugs that seem to cause excessive overheating.
Apparatuses: (top side)
Both the TL and UP models have a high performance cutting tool. The UP version uses a tungsten carbide blade that vibrates at a high frequency. It requires a steady hand and high precision to use properly. A folding arm swings outward from the main housing, with the on/off switch being located in the user's thumb. It can cut through just about anything, and is commonly used to cut scraps into workable-sized portions for bullet maker devices. The TL version is nearly identical, but uses a low-transfer plasma torch to cut the material. Newer models are sporting laser-cutting technology.
Opposite to that, the device has a welding device that can fuse a multitude of materials. Depending on what is being fused together, the welding torch burns at different temperatures and different feeding speeds. Metals, plastics, ceramics, and a plethora of other types of material can be welded together, so long as the bonding material is similar enough and adheres well with what is being welded. TL and UP models of the welder are nearly identical, with the TL version being able to make welds using slightly less material.
UP and TL models have an ammo pressing device built in. They can't produce the same volume of bullets as a stand-alone bullet maker, but are definitely still appreciated by squads lacking ammo. A scrap of potential bullet-material is placed in the central part of the upper arm section (the biggest apparatus on the device), a chamber that runs the length of the forearm, reaching from elbow to upper wrist. The operator simply closes the door, runs the scanner, and selects the bullet production option. The 'output' is produced in bullet form several moments later, ready to be loaded into a magazine. The same chamber can be used to provide fusion material for the welding tool. The material is simply melted down and coiled into a solder-like state to be used by the welding attachment when needed.
The micro-furnace that powers the bullet-maker and welder attachment is also capable of making a few plastic based adhesives, as well as a limited number of other commonly needed fluids like lubricants. The applicator for this feature is shared with the cutting tool. Simply removing the blade and attaching the hose to the 'arm' that folds out activates this operation mode. The waste products of this function need to be purged frequently, and are done via a 'bleed valve' underneath the battery pack.
Bottom side:
The bottom half of the device houses most of the computer interfacing functions. The majority of the lower half is monopolized by a shock resistant screen that serves several purposes. (scanner) The composition by percentage of the material inside the ammo-press chamber is displayed on screen when running the ammo press. Actions are selected on this screen by a series of 8 buttons (4 per side) that surround the screen. For more intensive computer interfacing, a single expansion port exists on the side of the screen, which serve as a conduit to computer terminals.
For data transfer, a small hard drive can store a limited amount of data. The UP model is hard-wired only, while the TL version has a wireless transmission emitter. The plug is stored in a reel-in dock located on the inside bicep for the UP model, and extends about 3 feet fully un-wound. Computer hacking software, operation system updates, and other data transfers are done in the same way, so a UP device update must be done individually as there is no removable data storage unit, whereas TL models receive their updates through a data network.

No rush, buddy - I can't expect people to post super fast, when I'm the one slowing them down
Still, I'd be nice if folks can sound off and tell me if they're still interested in this, just so I now what I'm working with.

Kinda late from me, but I have to say Elric that was a pretty nice post. I like how you continue to convey the "fuck this, we're so screwed" atmosphere from post to post. Thumbs up from me.
Still waiting on people, but DeadEye - you're free to post if you've got something up your sleeve. Don't want to leave you hanging.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Ok, expect a post from me Tuesday or Wednesday. Spent 24 of my last 72 hours underneath my car. This weekend I am doing body work but will be done by early next week.
As for my post, I am going to follow along with the squad, and with your permission, take note of the smashed computer terminal. Just as a bit of personality development and all that good stuff.

Thanks, I figure combat is pretty stressful, and having to fight with crap equipment has to be irritating.

Not for long, my friend, not for long. Once you get through this...something will be thrown your way. Knowing the Legion, it would probably be crap as well...but it will be better than what you are using now. Errr...somewhat.

I am planning on him stealing and cracking the codes to use TL equipment eventually. Spray paint can be a wonderful thing, and it's the kind of thing I would do in this circumstance.

Definitely use Notepad, Word (I'd recommend Word just because it has a spell-checker) or something of the sort. Not only does it allow you to have a backup even if you fuck up, it also means that you can write in parts. A bit today, something else tomorrow - whenever the mood hits you. That way you don't feel rushed and can always take a break if you feel like doing something else. In fact, when I started using this method almost two years ago, I found out that my writing improved. (or at least, I'd like to think so lolz)

Ah man, we're picking up momentum again! Hopefully our other two recruits will follow suit soon; everyone's approach to the situation (and their storytelling of course) is making this RP a great read. I keep returning to the beginning and going through the events so far to get inspiration and collaboration ideas...it's great.

I was thinking Dead Eye, we should collaborate over PM a conversation between us, and you could post it with your next big post. That way there is some actual conversation, instead of just several short lines, followed by a lot of description (because of the length requirement).
tl;dr
PM me, and we will RP our conversation.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Yeah I'd appreciate it if you guys start creating some sort of...let's call them strands between each other. As of now, most of the stuff has been going through me, but as we near the end of the prologue and move into a squad, that sort of communication won't be as feasible then. I fully support and hope that your characters start interacting with each other, which will require no small deal of collaboration. I suggest instant-messaging programs, because that's the best way to write dialogue, in my opinion.
Enough lectures from me though, you have my blessings; now go forth and RP.
As for our other two greenhorns - I haven't heard from Spectre yet, which is a shame; while Dani has asked that we finish with the fighting before she jumps in again, seeing as her character won't be doing much anyway during this phase. So that leaves the ball in my field, but I warn you that I'll probably take a while (not TOO long though) with my post. Stay tune.

Bearing this in mind, do we have a plan in the event of Spectre being unable to continue? That aside, anyone is welcome to PM me for character interaction stuff. It may even be best for us to work on a time to meet in the chat room, or swap instant messenger screen names, etc as Blackrock suggested.
Edit: For the braver among you, I could possibly be willing to trust you with my phone number over PM.

Re: War is War OOC [Closed]
Phone numbers, eh? As a person who's done this sort of things with guildmates in MMO"s, I can tell you that it's probably not the best medium to talk RP in. I suggest you stick to IM programs. Or the FOG chatroom.
Speaking of scree names, this is my MSN address: pepik1@abv.bg; I'll show up as "Peter". Add me in if you guys feel like talking to me in the flesh, so to speak.
As for Spectre's absence, it's still pretty open (and it will be so for at least the foreseeable future) so he can jump right in, but in the mean time I'll provide a handy NPC for us to use. Provided we don't hear from him by the end of the prologue. How does that sound?
