Alright, my scale-y friends! I give to you, Emoria's scale!

Emoria: World-Building OOC - Page 22 281x43l

When I finish the map, this will of course be on it, but I wanted to give it to you guys now. Just open up the overall map in MS paint, and copy and paste this bad boy in it to see the scale of your land. I broke it up so you don't have to guestimate too hard. If you need this in km, I will gladly convert the miles to km in an alternate scale for the elite (*cough* I mean, those who use the metric system).

Also, I took the liberty of borrowing some human travel stats from our good friends at Sephiris. No need to reinvent the wheel, eh? Thank you, Stion Gyas, for your research information.

Average Human travel by caravan ~ 12-18 miles per day, depending on pace
Average Human travel on horseback ~ 30-50 miles per day, depending on pace
Average Human travel on foot ~ 20-40 miles per day, depending on pace

Keep in mind, the faster the pace the more likely to wear down yourself, your horses, and/or your vehicle. If you are not human, you may change your stats, but I don't want to see anyone able to trot at three times the speed of a human. Let's be realistic!

Here is info on Travel by Sea. Names of ships can be changed, but the general description will probably match up with one of these:
Spoiler:

I hope there are no qualms with this information, but if something doesn't smell right I will of course listen. If there are no disagreements, I will post this up in the information thread, likely under the maps section.

I have no qualms.

I suppose I will need to make a so-called fly-speed for the Ionairus. I am guessing it would be slightly faster than a human's speed on foot.

I'll work with Plague and get some specifics out for the I'nak and the Tynir. Shouldn't take too long.

Also, I just spoke with Raptorman and we have come to the conclusion that it doesn't make much sense for him to kidnap an I'nak. However, I fully intend to work out a reason for why my char would attend this meeting. (If she even does. Haven't made up my mind yet. That'll probably come once I get her all worked out.)

And a quick update for what's going on with me and Plague! We're currently working on the histories of our peoples. They should be done tonight. He just has to work out a few details with Tynir culture. Once the history for the I'nak is done, I'll buckle down and crack out my character sheet. Then I'll flesh out my religion for Dax's pantheon project, after that I'll write up a good description of Wyluutaan Jerigg, and then I'll begin my write up of the notable species of the sothern continent(working with Loki and Plague, of course.) And I think that leaves me with just one more map to do after that!

...Sorry for the play by play there, I just wanted to let you all know that I'm not slacking off and stuff.

I was thinking that perhaps the current, main owner of the Great Library would be kidnapped, and I still have to work on whoever is going to be kidnapped from the four other territories...

Perhaps that is something that will be fleshed out during the actual role play. I think that no one will be kidnapped from the swamplands, and that a prophet will announce that Corbina must make a journey to the great Library for unknown reasons. Prophecy is dangerous and mistrusted, but so is Corbina ever since she was infected with lycanthropy.

He could send the lords of the Highers out. They likely could succeed in kidnapping people.

And they are very good at being stealthy.

I should mention that if you do not want someone kidnapped from your lands, you do not have to do it. Just make up another reason to be at the Great Library, like I am.

Hmmmmm....
So many possibilities....

Actually I think my character will just be there as part of an envoy that's trying to reestablish relations with their elven kin. They finally feel ready. ^^ I'm finally starting to get a feel for my character, too. I've been updating my character sheet, so you can read it if you want, but I'll let you guys know when I'm basically done, so people don't have to worry about it.

If Morgarath doesn't plan on using the pirates (or any of the other groups outside Raptorman's NPCs) for any of the kidnapping then I was thinking of having my character's ship attempt to highjack one of the other character's passenger ships on its way to the grand meeting. Kalon or Gunneh I would imagine one of your passenger ship's would be the best candidate.

The twist is Boyd's attack is unsuccessful, and he along with a number of his crew are taken prisoner. This way my character will (unwillingly) end up at the council meeting and in the mix of the story in at least a small way -- maybe accidentally crash it while he tries to escape, or something... :: shrugs ::

Kalon, Gunneh, or anyone else on my pirates' side of the map get at me if you're interested in this idea.

Actually, now that I think about it, I can't really see the any of the Quendi being kidnapped, but they like humans ((for the most part)), and they'd want to help. However, my character already has an excuse to be at the Library because she works there, so yeah. ^^_^^

I don't want to tell people what to do, or try and upset people or anything, but here's my two cents.

It seems a little odd that no elves would be kidnapped. They're pretty much the most "light" aligned race in all of Emoria. Why wouldn't Morgarath, the baddest bad guy of "dark" kidnap those aligned with the light? Plus Morgarath kind of has a hatred of the elves due to them kind of mucking up his conquering of the world.

Again, please don't anyone take this the wrong way, I'm just stating my opinion on the matter.

Perhaps he attempted to kidnap the elves but it somehow failed, and so his kidnapping humans is to spur reaction among his enemies and make them do something foolish? It is an alternative way to get things moving, rather than forced abduction.

Post by Kathryn Lacey Sun Feb 21, 2010 2:18 am

My thinking was that because there are four separate territories in the Quendi country, no one leader could be kidnapped that represents the entire nation. Also, it seems excessive to me to think that he would be successful in kidnapping one leader from every territory. For the most part, I'm having a hard time determining who would have been successfully kidnapped as far as Quendi leaders went.

Though Quendi are predisposed toward good, only the Kalon's elves are the ones who are closely aligned with the light.

Maybe I could get some tips on what leaders would be good ones to have kidnapped from my nation, but it's kind of hard.

Of course, I still think it's a good idea to have one of the Library owners to have been kidnapped, and that person would have been of the Quendi.

Saila is still going to be there mainly because she works there, so I wouldn't have to do the whole traveling thing unless I include how she got there from her home in the city. XD

Hmm...tips for what leaders to kidnap...

Well, if it was an imporatant enough person from the library, then that very well could be enough to spur the Quendi into action; since the library is so important to them.

Maybe some members of important families? A "general" type person or something? Things that would cause a disturbance with the way things are normaly run, people like that are the ones that would be kidnaped, I think.

The head of the library sounds like the PERFECT person to kidnap, if you ask me. This would plunge not only the Quendi into chaos, but other nations as well--if word gets out.

I guess it might not be as bad as all THAT, but still, I'm sure it wouldn't be good. Especially if that head librarian is very old and wise, and knows all the secrets.

Yeah, I guess that was pretty obvious. Razz
Well there you go, then! Perfect person to be kidnapped! 'Twould cause all manner of mayhem! xD

Edit:
Has there been much progress on an official timeline? Very Happy What do we call the date? I assume we have four seasons and twelve months? Should there be Ages à la Middle-earth? I imagine the Great Library would set the standard for the count of years.

The Hyrarya would probably get involved only because all the other Quende would be running around with their tails bitten off. They'd probably think they were the most level-headed while doing it too (they're arrogant like that).

I have a question for everyone.

Since roughly half of the Tynir are allied with Morgarath, and with his help have constructed a large spire/fortress, plus they are receiving large shippments of weaponry and armour for their forces. How much attention would this draw from the rest of the world, and would this be viewed as a bad thing by those aware of the Tynir?

For those who don't know, the Tynir are a sub-species of the I'nak that splintered off from the main species into the marshes of Korun Otak. So, they're basically the same as the I'nak with a few minor adaptations.

Hyarya is the name of the western territory. Quendë ((elf)) is the singular of Quendi ((elves)).

Does that help you at all.

All I know about the timeline is that we are measuring from the end of the Illuria wars (if there are accents there, don't bother me about it, my laptop doesn't do accents).

We also decided that those wars ended what...2000 years ago? I don't remember now. Raptorman said he was working on a timeline, I'm not sure how it is coming along.

We will go with the 12 months, four seasons, though each area can measure time in any way they please (as long as they realize that the world follows that general 12 month pattern). Seasons may vary in strength depending on what area you are from. For example, I imagine the swamplands being rather temperate with only minor changes between the seasons.

Plaguewalker, I'm not sure if the world would notice such actions, considering that the southern continent seems rather wild and untravelled. If the world found out about it, it would probably be because someone such as the I'nak or the Fermatan Spellsingers brought it to the attention of someone important.

I doubt it would be the I'nak since they rarely if ever leave the southern continent. Maybe traders from Kvatch could also bring news of it?

But, that all depends on whether everyone wants to know about it or not I guess.

Unfortunately, in the world of politics, the matter of wanting or not to know bad news is irrelevant. You dont get to choose the news you recieve, you deal with it.
Smile

Vatienne would most certainly be alarmed by this and open a dialogue with the Tynir to know what the heck is going on.
It would also open doubts on the existence/return of Morgarath.

Post by Guest Sun Feb 21, 2010 3:54 pm

Alright, not meaning to break topic here, but Fermata still has no official relations with anybody, partly my fault in not answering PMs. ImmortalSin and I talked about possibly having our nations be two rival sects of the same Gods, and I'm gonna need someone to trade with, most likely Kvatch, for most of Fermata's food/material goods. So, in case anybody needs a clarification of what Fermata is, and isn't, here goes.

Fermata IS:

An island nation, consisting mostly (Roughly 60%), of the Spellsinger Monestary (working title), home of the Arpeggio Knights, and it's grounds. The other 40% consists of small farm and fishing towns, which Spellsinger hopefuls come to stay in until they're let into the Monestary.

A theocracy, ruled by the leader of the Spellsinger religion and Grand Marshall of the Arpeggio Knights.

Neutral good. As beauty in music can be created with without help, it can also be created with brilliant, measured precision. To the Fermatans, this also stands true for the good they wish to spread to everyone else.

Fermata ISN'T:

Able to fully support it's agricultural needs. It needs to trade to maintain acceptable living conditions. It makes the money and goods it needs to trade for the material things and extra food it needs by fishing, and by the services of it's Arpeggio Knights. If a nation in good standing with Fermata needs assistance that the Knights can provide, they merely have to ask. However, Fermata expects something in return, be it money, food, or any other goods. This is usually handled up front.

A mercenary nation. Fermata hires out it's Knights only to those in good standing, and the Knights will never wittingly commit an act of evil.

Now that that's taken care of, I will go into detail on the Knights.

The Arpeggio Knights are an order of monks who follow the Treblè, their gods. Not all of them are plate armer wearing, sword and shield using combatants. Their Spellsinging is the force they use to manipulate magic, and like magic, it's potential is limited only by imagination and the skill of the user. Legend says that the world was created in song, and so the Fermatans believe. Spellsinging is unique to Fermata, and only taught there.

If anybody's country would be interested in Fermata, be it curiosity, a long-lasting feud, or a trade agreement, please say something either here, or in PMs. Thank you Smile
