Re: The Chatterbox Thread
*pops in* I've not played Halo or Fallout, so I can't contribute to the conversation. D:
So, I have a paper to write, but I feel rather brain dead at the moment. I also was working on my Caligo character, but, alas, the same issue affects that as well. I'm just really tired, but I have school in the morning. I just wish one class didn't take up nearly my entire day. I get home at 2 PM, and then I have to eat some lunch, so that gives me a couple of hours before Tony gets home, and really I only have 1 hour of free time, since I need to start dinner before Tony gets home. /complain
Well, I guess I better try to write my paper...just get it over with. Hope you guys don't have any irritating homework either.

Crap, Fate...Homeworks sucks. That, however, is not why I said "crap." It seems as if you popped into the IRC just as our should-be Wal-Mart greeter Baker decided to take a look away from the screen. It's not -always- that dead in there, though we really are looking for some more ways to get more people in there....

Homework does suck.
Lol aww, really? I didn't think it was dead, really. I had assumed you guys were just not paying attention. Any time there are people in there, even idle ones, I think that's a good thing.

Ugh! College sounds hard. I'm starting college next autumn. I think I've finally decided that I want to get my MLS ((Masters Degree in Library Science)). If I can afford it, I'll probably get my PhD in Library Science, too. =3

Heh...Inconnu is a high-ranking idler. Apparently, and he told me this, there are channels where you idle all the time and you get ranks for it....Awesome XD
Seriously, Kathryn? You wanna catalog stuff all the time? Eh...I can't say much: I was thinking about majoring in Museum Studies.

Kathryn, I really admire you. I hope you enjoy college. I gotta hand it to anyone who can stand to be there for longer than 4 years. It would certainly be well worth it in the end though.
Lol, no kidding, Gunneh? That's silly, but go him!

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
Being a librarian isn't just about cataloging things. You have to have your Master's if you want to be hired as a librarian anyway. I'm thinking about getting a job at the public library for experience. You can be a library assistant with just your high school diploma or G.E.D., so it could work if they're willing to hire me. We'll just have to wait and to see.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
*raises hand* I work at a library! I work at a library!
Tell me all about how your librarianship studies go!! On a regular basis!
It's NOT all cataloging stuff, Gunneh!
I'm only a Page (or, now, "Materials Handler"), and it's way more than just putting the books on the shelves.
There's straightening the books.
And cleaning up the library at closing.
And helping patrons find things.
And taking part in the library's inner workings.
And LA's (Library Assistants) do circulation and reference and things like that. It's really all about being there for the community. And actually libraries offer so much nowadays. From computers to school programs to story-times for kids. I even work a program called Game On, where we have video games at the library twice a month.
You'd think working at a library would be monotonous, and in some ways that's true, but that's only on the surface, and it's never dull.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
Yeah! I've always had a deep respect for libraries. I have always loved going to them. Some of the people there are so nice, too. They're not all grouchy old ladies who hiss "Sh!" every ten seconds. However... there is this one middle aged woman who works at the one to which I always go who constantly has a look on her face like she's smelling baby poo.
Anyway, other than her, the rest are all really nice and helpful. The "Materials Handler" at that library told me she liked my pants a few years back. I'd gotten them from Hot Topic, so, as you can imagine, they were all decked out in zippers and D rings. Not all librarians are conservative little old ladies. XD
Anyway, I intend to call the library to which I go tomorrow and ask them if they'd be willing to hire me. If not, I'll call the library in the other town ((Mt. P.)) to ask. The two towns are like... the same size, and the town in which I live ((FF)) makes it the same distance from my house to either of those towns. However, they're in different counties. The funniest part is that it's long distance to call FF despite it being in the same county as my town, but it's not long distance to call Mt. P. Oh well. I have a cell phone. I do need to figure out where Mt. P.'s library is... I was only there once, but apparently they've moved it to another part of town. =3
The down side is... if I am able to get the second job, I'll have way less free time.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
I'm with the King County Library System here in Washington.
I spent a lot of time at the library my whole life, plus I like to read and write (lol that sounds funny to say), so I guess it was fate that I ended up working there.
I don't know how we manage to fit 44 libraries in a single county, but it's flickerin' awesome! xDWikipedia wrote:KCLS is currently the second busiest library in the United States, circulating over 19 million items in 2007. It consists of 44 libraries, a Traveling Library Center, a mobile TechLab, and the ABC Express children’s library van. KCLS offers a collection of more than 4.1 million items including books, periodicals, newspapers, audio and videotapes, films, CDs, DVDs and extensive online resources. All KCLS libraries offer free Wi-Fi connections.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
Well, I'm a huge fan of organization, and I also have a love of libraries. The library here in town is really small, but Fairfield is a small town. We only have one library here, and there's one library in Mount Pleasant- which is my second choice. We may not be all fancy-shmancy, but on a rainy day, you can't find a parking spot at the library.
Even though it was really annoying that I had to park in front of someone's house, it kind of warmed my heart that there weren't any parking spots in our little library. I was with my grandma, and she feels the same way. It's like... even in the age of television, people still love books. There really aren't very many computers in the library, so it's not like everyone just goes there for an hour of internet, either. It's pretty freakin' sweet.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
That's so cool! I think in these pressing economic times, the free services at the library are becoming more and more important. People are using the library for more things. And of course just plain reading more, too.
There's another library for the little town where I live, but I don't go there as much anymore as when I didn't have a computer. (It's within walking distance.) That's a small library, too, and it feels really homey.
The KCLS library where I work is smaller than some others, but it's still probably three times the size of the tiny one in my town. We're getting tons of traffic there, though, where I work, because the larger library in our cluster is getting remodeled, so our library is pulling double duty, so to speak. We've even had to get a temporary location started in the mall close by to help out, which is totally win. xD

Nice! Well, I think the library to which I go is also very homey. Usually... if I'm in a place where it's supposed to be quiet, I feel... awkward, but I feel right at home in libraries when I know my way around them. My main problem with working in a library is going to be trying to speak quieter. My voice carries quite well. =3

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
The library where I work is said to be one of the loudest in the system.
It's not like it's really loud, but for some reason other libraries seem more hushed.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
I don't think I could work at a library. I have this thing about damaging books....and people at libraries are so careless with books. No, I would go crazy seeing how people treat books. Most of my books look like they were just pulled off the store shelf (despite a little page discoloring due to age with the older books), and I like to keep them that way. Not that I don't like a really old, used book! I do. But I treat them the same. The condition in which I get a book is the condition I strive to keep it in. Libraries are detrimental to the health and lifespan of books. So, while I respect and enjoy libraries...I just couldn't work there.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
You're like my friend, Laura, Silvone. She has this huge pet peeve about mishandling books. She'll freak out if she notices her friends either folding the corners of the pages or leaving them open on their spine when they're not reading it. I aspire to treat books as good as possible. I agree that people don't have the common courtesy to take care of those books as if they were their own. Actually, I could almost bet that people who mistreat the books in libraries mistreat their own things, too.
When I was reading The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings, every single book I brought back to the library had sections of pages that were no longer connected to the spine. The only one I didn't have to borrow was The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring. Whenever I returned them, I always gave them right to the librarians rather than putting them in the drop box. They always thanked me for telling them, and they said they would check it back in and place it into "Mending." I was like, "I hope you guys don't think I'm tearing up all of your books. I'm really not. It was like this when I borrowed it."
The book I'm reading now is a hard cover, and one third of the way through it, it looks like someone pulled it at the base too hard, and the spine shows between the pages. I'll show this one to the librarians, too.
The point is that I wouldn't mind being a librarian despite people treating things badly because it would give me the chance to help fix the wrongs of others. ^^_^^

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
That reminds me of getting used books back in high/middle/grade school. I always hated getting stuck with a really old and mistreated one, especially one people had drawn all over or scratched things out in, etc. If the book doesn't belong to you, then you should treat it that way. If you bought it and it's yours, then obviously no one else is going to care what you do to it except for you, so if you plan on being hard on it, or if you're the type of person to spill drinks easily while you're reading, then it's probably a better idea to just buy it for common courtesy's sake.
I really love the idea of ebooks now. You can have hundreds of books all in one! It's any book-lovers dream. I don't have enough money to afford one though, but I'd really love to buy one. I always see it on display when Tony and I go to Borders.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
I don't like ebooks either. Give it enough time, and solid books won't exist anymore. They will all be digital. I was once tempted to get a thingy-ma-bob that you could buy and upload books onto. It was like a little reading pamphlet. But I knew if I did that, I wouldn't be able afford to buy both ebooks and real books. So I decided on real books. They are far more valuable, in my opinion, than the oldest classic in ebook form.
There is a strange kid I work with. He is a Mormon, and he skims through books without reading them just to cross out all of the foul words. Vandalism to the highest degree! I could murder the stupid kid. Disrespecting the written word that way, the kid should just be a mute.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
I agree that it would be kind of nice just to have the real book version of a book that you really are in love with, but on the other hand, having an ebook would allow you to go anywhere with a wide variety of books that never fade or grow old, and you wouldn't have to worry about trying to fit a big book in your bag or your purse (if you're a girl...or a very strange guy).
Oh, man. That's terrible! What a jerk.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
I really don't like the idea of ebooks. First, if I stare at a computer screen for too long, I get a headache because of the lights or something in it. Real books only do that to me if I try to read in super dim lighting. Second, I love the feel of real books. I like turning pages. I like that if you accidentally spill a little water on it, it doesn't short out and the letters don't smear so much that it's illegible. The only thing I would like about ebooks is that they would lack that musty smell that real books have that makes me cough.

Re: The Chatterbox Thread
I like the idea of ebooks for textbooks. Wouldn't it be nice for a kid to go to school with just one electronic book rather than five giant textbooks? Same for college.
As for ebooks for pleasure reading...call me a sap, but I'm in love with books. The pages, the ink, the beautiful covers...books were meant to be looked at this way, and an ebook just doesn't hold the essence of a regular book.
However, it would be nice to have an ecopy of every book for documentation. Like you said, Fate, we'd never lose them, even if the original became lost or destroyed.

I guess I could live with ebooks for textbooks... and for documentation... I would love to be able to Ctrl+F something I wanted or needed the way I can't do in a real book. However, if I'm reading for pleasure, I want the real deal.

They have e-book readers that replicate the look of real pages, so it doesn't hurt your eyes. Those are cool, and if I had the money I'd love to get one. xD

Ooh I never thought of that! Quick searching key words when you are cramming for a test
My grandmother has a kindle, and it really doesn't hurt your eyes. It is a well made little thing...just not my thing

So how is everyone doing on this fine day?
Or whatever time of day it is.
I'm feeling great, just because it's raining and it's sunny and I can share good times with friends and family (offline and on ).
Spreadin' the love!

All is dark in the land of Mattipus. Mainly because it's 11 o'clock in the evening where I am.
Nah, my day has been okay. Nothing special, though. I'm back to college on Tuesday... so tomorrow will be my last day of relaxing before I go back.
Knowing me, I'll probably spend it all doing absolutely nothing (which, for those of you not in the know, means waking up late, browsing Facebook and lurking about the RP forums waiting for people to post).

Well then I must bombard you with sweet dreams from afar!
Dream of a fantasy world with giant trees and feasting with wood-elves!
