RP Background
Seed. It is all around us, it is everywhere and in everything and everyone; the source of all life on this world.  It is the very life force of the planet.

In the land of Viemera, humans have come to rely upon it as a source of power and the basis of all their advanced technology.  It is believed by spiritual leaders that there is a large pool of Seed deep within the planet, and it is form this pool that life was first created and it is where the Seed arises from to touch everything on the planet.  This is accepted as fact throughout Viemera by almost everyone.  One fact that is based on science rather than faith, is that Seed can be transformed into a palpable form of energy, a substance called Essence.  Humans have found a way to draw Seed from the planet, convert it into Essence, and store it in order to power cities and fuel technological development.  From this process, many new technologies have been formed, from lighting to locomotion to guns that fire concentrated Essence, to industrial machines.

Unfortunately, this seemingly limitless and versatile power source comes with one major drawback; it relies on the existence of a single woman, born once every three generations. Without this woman, Seed lies dormant and inactive, unable to be converted to Essence and becoming essentially useless.  On top of this, agricultural production seems to drop by about 20%.

This Woman is referred to as the ‘Goddess’ or ‘The Source’ and is protected under every law possible. There is also a grand Temple of the Goddess located somewhere in the mountains for the training and protection of the Goddess. If the Goddess dies, then the land suffers and the people must rely on the Essence already stored up in the factories as no more can be refined. The land must wait until the next Goddess is born and reaches her 16th birthday for her powers to emerge.

There is sometimes a “drought” where subsequent generations go without a goddess and there is not enough essence left to power their technology, resulting in a famine. This is the reason why alternate technologies are being explored and why many people use Low-Tech tools e.g. the City guards utilize Essence powered guns which fire a kind of green plasma (green being the neutral color of Essence) but also carry ordinary swords.  It is these droughts that caused there to be varying technologies throughout Viemera, as if the 15th century Renaissance and early 19th century Industrial Revolution eras occurred simultaneously.

The Goddess has been noted to be able to do many strange and fantastic things, which many would term ‘magical’.  However, it is a product of Seed, which is behind all great mysteries.  The Goddess is not the only one who possesses paranormal powers; in fact, while uncommon it is not so rare to find many other individuals with fantastic powers, just to a lesser extent.  There are people in Viemera born with a gift that manifests at the age of 16 for boys and 14 for girls.

These people are called Saturates because they have a higher saturation of seed in them than normal and their gift is two-fold: the first is the ability to directly convert the potential power of Seed into the refined power of Essence within their own bodies and even store a small amount for later use. The second is their unique ability to utilize Essence.  Saturates are gifted with other special abilities and powers and can be placed into three distinct categories;

The History of Viemera
Modern views of The Goddess, or The Source, stems from an era of oppression while Goddess Eraclea was in power.  The term “Goddess” is used loosely in this sense, for she was more commonly referred to as Demon Eraclea.  In the years that she was beginning to understand her abilities, a group of Saturates, known as The Order of Dio, had managed to corrupt the young girl and fuel her insatiable desire for power.  It was that same order that protected Eraclea while her powers developed and grew to a point where she was all but immortal.  At this point, around her late twenties, Eraclea had full understanding of her potential to mold the various forms of Seed to her will.  As a result, the elements were at her beaconing, she had the ability to rip away a person’s life with a simple thought, and her connection with Essence made her nearly omniscient to her surroundings.  After a few years, Eraclea’s corruption reached a point where not all the wealth and power in the world was enough to satisfy her lust; at this point, she desired to see people’s reaction to what she was capable of doing.  The emotion of terror entertained her most of all.

Many people, even whole cities, suffered for her entertainment; what little humanity she had maintained up to that point was now gone.  Eraclea became infamous for her insidious methods of torture, able to keep her target alive and conscious well past what the normal body could handle, sometimes for days until the body was physically unable to sustain the life force.  It is understood that all forms of life felt nothing but fear and anger when regarding The Goddess.   At this point of her life, she appointed herself as unquestionable ruler of Viemera with The Order of Dio as her personal advisors.  Fortunately, for the masses, of all the gifts that The Goddesses possess, immortality is not one of them.  Despite years of trying to manipulate Seed and Essence, she was unable to do anything aside from prolong her inevitable demise at the age of 172.

It was the months following Eraclea’s demise that most of the laws and customs regarding The Goddesses were set in place.  The first, and foremost, law that was unanimously decided upon was that any person, or people, who attempt or conspire to corrupt a Goddess would be met with the death penalty.  Once this law was set into place, the entire Order of Dio was hunted and exterminated until none remained, or at the very least driven so far underground that they dare not even insinuate their involvement.  As a reminder to those 150 years of darkness, the calendar year was reset to 0A.E. (After Eraclea) on the day that she died to celebrate a new era of hope and freedom.

Geography and Culture
Tel Aruhn – This is the northern most continent with the capital being Veril and the cities of Cormir, Renrir, Swai, and Rurik.  Aside from the planes in the center of the continent, most of the body mass is comprised of hilly and mountainous landscaping, thick with lush wilderness.  Most of these people follow the Seedist way of life (see below), as such; they typically use alternative methods to provide power to their cities rather than using Essence refineries.  Fortunately, the tectonic plate that the continent rests upon is unusually thin, allowing for excellent geothermal activity; so much so, that Tel Aruhn is renowned for its hot springs and vacation resorts.  Cities are primarily built with simple materials, such as concrete, masonry, timber, and plaster.  Steel and iron are primarily used in larger structures or for reinforcing and tools.  Due to the energy required to manufacture large supplies of these materials, they are most commonly imported from Rothmor.  The government of Tel Aruhn is an oligarchy in the form of a Senate.  The Senate comprised of people who are of important stature and proper education as determined by the Senator whom they had replaced.

Rothmor – This is the southern continent with the capital being Gnisis.  Citizens of Rothmor are very industrious and their use of Essence power plants enables their cities to grow rapidly and more densely.  This readily available and massive supply of energy allows cities to be scattered throughout the continent no matter the terrain or climate.  The continent has a variety of climates ranging from large planes to mountains and marshes.  Citizens of Rothmor are more logical in thought as opposed to their more spiritual neighbors to the north.  This way of life and dense populations cause an increase in crime rates and political corruption.  Rothmor is a democratic nation where the public elects the political leader, his advising staff, and city officials.

Demora – This continent does not appear on any modern map, aside from the ruins of its once great capital, Fyr, and the peaks of its once mighty mountain range.  In the beginning of Eraclea’s rule, people were outraged against her lust for power and control.  As a result, Eraclea decided to put an end to the opposition with a single demonstration of her power.  Within an hour, she had managed to submerge Demora deep below the ocean’s surface.  After the chaos settled, its once towering mountain peaks struggled to see even the slightest hint of daylight through the depth of the water.  Millions had died within a matter of minutes as the ocean overtook Demora’s lands.  Those that were not swallowed by the raging tide were left to starve to death as they floated in the middle of the newly expanded ocean.  That was the last day anybody was outright about their opposition against Eraclea.  It wasn’t until the next Goddess came into power that the continent was raised closer to the surface of the water and these peaks once again felt air upon its surface, forming a strand of isles with on large land mass where the ruins of a once mighty city still stand.  A majority of the continent still remains submerged to this day as a reminder of the destructive potential each Goddess has and a lesson to each successor how their actions have the potential to influence everything on the planet, for better or worse.

Technology
Technology has grown rapidly since Eraclea’s demise.  Researchers and scientists have gained a better understanding of Seed and how to refine it into Essence, making it useful for humanity.  Since the manufacturing of Essence relies on the existence of a Goddess, other (less efficient) tools and power sources are utilized to save the reserves during times of famine.  The result of which means that there are several variations of technology ranging from simple man-powered devices, such as swords and pulleys, to high-tech machines, such as lasers and simple robotics.  In large cities, especially those powered by Essence, these contradictions in technology is apparent through the integration of iron or steel with timber or stone in many things (i.e. buildings, roads, etc).

Cultures of Interest
Theria – Therians are the people who follow the religion of Theria.  This religion views the Goddess, Saturates, and Essence technology as the defiance of nature’s laws and a perversion of God’s will.  Therian extremists have been known to sabotage machinery powered by Essence and assassinate Saturates.  Due to the laws set in place by both governments, even the most extreme of zealots will look upon the Goddess with scorn, but make no attempt to cause her harm.  Followers of this religion can be found in small groupings throughout Viemera with the largest and most fanatic of which being located in the city of Cormir.

Seedists – Seedism is a personal belief and a way of life rather than a religion.  These people look upon the Goddess and Saturates with reverence, but rebuke all forms of technology that uses man-refined Essence.  These people see the Goddess and Saturates as guardians of the Seed and maintainers of the planet’s balance and order.  Meanwhile, the societies that forcefully draw Seed from the planet and forcefully refine it into Essence are viewed as a threat to the natural balance and are assumed to be draining planet’s life force.  This mentality is common among the citizens of Tel Aruhn.

Story Background
The year is 624A.E. and it has been six long years of famine.  Essence reserves are running dangerously low, but hopes are high now that the planet is showing signs that hint to the next Goddess is coming of age.  A majority of the population waits anxiously for her arrival, the several Goddesses following Eraclea had been everything the people of Viemera could hope for and have done well at restoring trust in their lineage.  While they resided in their temple, they’ve done great deeds for humanity and strived to maintain order with the world.  Despite this, there are still several who are untrusting; they understand that those preceding Goddesses have little to no influence over how the next will turn out and the risk of allowing a corrupted Goddess gaining power is too great.

The threat does not lie within the general population of Viemera, however; an organization has been planning for this day, the day that the new Goddess will come of age.  For decades now, they have stuck to the shadows, avoiding every radar and agent that the government had monitoring for The Order of Dio, or any copycat organizations of its kind.  All this time, they have been planning their moves and positioning themselves within society to ensure their plans come to fruition while nobody outside of its role were any the wiser to their presence or intentions.  Whether they seek power, wealth, or chaos has yet to be revealed, but it is clear that the key to accomplishing their goals lies within the power of the Goddess.

Hopefully I provided enough information to paint a clear picture of this world and pique your interests.  We will be playing as Saturates, with the exception of one who will be playing the crucial role of the Goddess.  The Goddess still fills out the CS as though she was a Saturate since she will have a particular ability that will develop quicker than the rest of her Goddess abilities.  If we have enough people join, I will allow the option of being either aligned with the Goddess or with the unknown organization.

The Goddess can start out with any history you want, doesn't have to be 'good and righteous' because she is just an average girl until she comes of age. It is unusual for a Goddess to be born from a couple where neither are Saturates, but for your character I would like this to be the case. This tidbit of her past will come into play in a few parts of the plot.

Personality:Raewyn has learned that one can bluff your way through virtually anything. People are sheep as a rule and if you look and act like you own the place, you can rest assured that no one will question you. She has a colossal ego. Raewyn feels that the world owes her and owes her big. She also knows that working for a living is for fools; if you can take someone’s money, then it’s yours by rights. She knows how to influence, flatter, appear vulnerable and work anyone’s emotions to her advantage.

Powers: Mind Manipulation. Raewyn has grown adept at fooling people. They see what they want to see in her. Sister, lover, child, mother. In their minds she is all that and more. She can influence their natural emotional tendency to wish to do things for her, protect her, love her, devote themselves to her and give things to her. Those that she has a hold on cannot see her for what she truly is. Coupled with her acting ability, she can reinforce those feelings by appearing vulnerable or loving to the object of her manipulation.

Bio: Raewyn was born to a happy, albeit struggling, family of a middle class tradesman and his wife. The youngest of 5 children by almost 9 years, Raewyn’s parents were delighted to finally have a daughter after their rough and tumble sons. They doted on their tiny, beautiful girl. Every whim was indulged; every toy she wanted was scrimped for and bought. But inevitably, they couldn’t contain their daughter’s greed. What they gave was never enough. She wanted more. She wanted what the children of wealthy parents had. Beautiful clothes, the best foods, the newest toys. She made her parents’ lives a living hell of screaming fits, hunger strikes and persistent attempts to run away from home.

But, then it all changed on her 14th birthday. When she woke that day, she noticed a subtle shift in the attitudes of people around her. If she wanted something they had, they gave it to her and then had no memory of the incident.

Digital Muse and quakernuts - CSs look good, both of you are accepted.

Digital Muse - Just a quick note, since you have just come to age, it'll take a little while to gain the ability of complete mind control. At this point, your mind manipulation is similar to creating a voice in the back of a persons mind that could be confused with their intuition or conscious. The same goes for illusions (assuming that was another one of your abilities), you can cause a person to see something else that is approximately the same size as what they are looking at. Since you are playing as the Goddess, it won't take long for you to hone your abilities, so don't think of this as a lasting handicap.

Also, you are initially granted the Goddess ability of sensing Saturates through the concentrated Essence in their bodies. Here are the specifics of this ability:

Sensing Summoners - The only time you are able to sense if somebody is a summoner is the precise moment they are using their summoning ability, the rest of the time they appear to be a normal person. However, you can sense a summoned creature or object with the greatest of ease.

Sensing Users - Since these Saturates have such a large concentration of Essence within their bodies, it is quite easy to sense them even when they are not using their abilities. When they are; they stand out like a torch in a small dark room.

Sensing Manipulators - When they are not using their abilities, they are somewhat difficult to sense. Once they are using their abilities, it becomes much easier, but they still don't stand out as easily as Users.

Thanks Loki. Trust me, I didn't see it as a handicap in the least. I just had overwritten my BG well into her 17th year and such before I saw your note. LOLS!

No harm done though. And she doesn't control minds at this stage, just has learned to make people do what she wants via flattery, playing on their emotions, tantrums, etc.

I hadn't thought about using illusions down the road, but that's not a bad idea. I might just steal that from you. Smile

Here is my CS. I didn't quite mean for the bio to be so long, but it just ended up like that. Please let me know if anything needs to be changed!

Name: Eri Kiryakov

Gender: Female

Age: 20

Weapons:
-A lightweight two-handed sword that her father made for her. It complements her left-handed fighting style and is like an extension of her arms.
-Four throwing daggers. She keeps one in each boot and two in her belt, discreetly hidden under her clothes.
-Eri relies on these weapons when entering towns or cities where Saturates are not welcome, such as ones populated mostly by Therians, so that she does not give away the fact that she is one.

Appearance:
Eri is 5’9” with an athletic build and has dark brown hair that falls past her shoulders in slight waves. She always keeps a single white feather tucked behind her ear. Her eyes are jade green. Eri’s appearance is subtly influenced by her mental link to her summon creature. Her facial features are sharp and angular, with high cheekbones and a nose that ends in a delicate point. Dark, arching eyebrows and black lashes frame her eyes, playing up their piercing, serious expression. Her facial features could be considered attractive, but she shies away from makeup or anything that would play up her looks. Also, her toned arms and built-up muscles in her legs mask any kind of delicate, feminine figure. Finally, she always keeps her hair down to hide the half dozen or so three-inch black feathers growing along the base of her skull.

In terms of dress, Eri gravitates toward greens and dark colors. She wears a green turtleneck or lighter short-sleeve tunic, depending on the weather, with a wide black leather belt around her waist. Over that she dons a black leather jacket that comes down to her hips, as well as dark wash blue jeans and gray knee-high leather boots. A forest green backpack completes the look and holds her camping gear, food, and medical supplies.

Personality:
Eri is a quiet, serious-minded individual. She speaks only when necessary and faces problems strategically, pushing emotions aside in favor of logic. As a result, she is very good at working under pressure and high-stress situations. When first meeting someone, she comes off as having a cold disposition, mainly because she prefers to be alone. She also prefers to face problems alone and usually views other people as a hindrance. She finds working in a group to be tedious because everyone has to debate and decide on a course of action together – she would much rather decide and act on her own for the sake of efficiency. As a result, she is very independent and doesn’t want to be tied down by someone else’s desires or plans. She also has a strong sense of pride and dignity, so her biggest fear is showing weakness to anyone.

Powers:

Summon Arashi: Eri’s summon creature is a large pure white eagle named Arashi. His eyes are a bright crystal blue, though they bear a gently expression. When Eri first summoned him at age 14, he was about 5 feet tall. Since then, he has grown about a foot taller so that his head stands taller than hers. His size coupled with his massive wingspan means that he can carry Eri comfortably on his back, making travel much easier and quicker than on foot. He is a quiet, reserved creature, though his personality is decidedly gentler and more thoughtful than Eri’s. He is exceedingly polite and obedient to Eri, preferring to call her “Mistress,” even though she has told him over and over that using such a title is completely unnecessary. He is also more open to working with others and is sensitive to people’s emotions. When summoned in battle, Arashi fights fiercely with all the deadly skill of a bird of prey to protect Eri. He can crush the bones of smaller foes with his beak or talons or carry them high into the sky and then drop them. When facing larger enemies, he can rake them with his talons to cause deep, bloody wounds. Finally, his strongest ability is to manipulate the air to form slicing blades that either work as a projectile or for close combat. However, this skill requires Eri to use a lot of Essence and so is only used as a last resort. It is a fairly new ability that they have discovered and so have not fully mastered it yet. If Eri uses too much Essence in this manner, she runs the risk of passing out on the battlefield and remaining unconscious for over a day.

Summon Sword: Eri’s summoned object is a two-handed sword, which she calls Gale Cleaver. Its shape is similar to the one her father made for her, though with more geometric angles and consisting of a deep purple material as strong as forged steel. With this sword, Eri can control Essence more easily, so she always uses it before summoning Arashi. However, if her Essence reserves are running low or she is too exhausted, she can concentrate Essence around the blade of her usual sword and change the shape and appearance of the blade to match Gale Cleaver. Its effects on Essence control are not as strong when in this form, but it’s a reliable last resort or when Eri wants to conserve her Essence reserves.

Bio:
Eri was born to Seedist parents in a small, quiet farming village in Tel Aruhn. Her father, Anton Kiryakov, was the town’s blacksmith and weaponsmith, and he was well known for his skill in making quality farming tools and weapons. Her mother, Vera Kiryakov, stayed at home and raised Eri. As an only child, Eri received her parents’ undivided attention and so grew up as a happy child, following her parents’ Seedist ideals and believing in the good intentions of the Goddess and Saturates. Since their village was relatively isolated and therefore vulnerable, her father insisted on teaching her swordsmanship so she could defend herself. Her mother didn’t exactly like the idea of her daughter learning how to fight but nonetheless went along with it.

However, Eri’s world changed abruptly when the Goddess died and the famine began. During the first year of famine, when Eri was 14, her family had to move to the city of Cormir. Her village had grown unable to support all its citizens with agriculture, and her father owned no farmland of his own. He went to work in Cormir crafting swords and other weapons, as the demand had increased with the decline of Essence to power the more advanced weapons. The biggest shock for Eri came in the form of the Therians. Having grown up in a community of Seedists, she was shocked at both the subtle and outright hostility the citizens of Cormir held towards the now-deceased Goddess and any users of Essence. The children that were her age knew she had moved from a Seedist village and teased her relentlessly, calling her a country bumpkin and an uncultured hick. She quickly grew to distrust the people in this city and wanted nothing more than to leave, though she knew that would be impossible. Her only solace was when her father, with whom she was still very close, would take her out of the city for walks in the woods and hiking trips to the mountains.

Two months after moving, during one of these hiking trips, Eri and Anton had stopped for a rest when they heard raised voices coming from up the trail. Half a dozen men – zealous Therians from Cormir – armed with swords and spears came charging towards them, claiming to be carrying out God’s divine will by wiping out any followers of the Seedist way of life. Eri’s father drew his sword and shoved Eri behind him before taking on all six men alone. Eri watched, frozen in fear, as he killed two of them but slowly lost ground because of sheer numbers and lack of room to maneuver. When one of the men stabbed Anton in the side, Eri screamed in horror as he fell beside her, alive but badly wounded. Suddenly, Essence in the form of white feathers flared to life around her. Terrified, Eri dropped to the ground and covered her head with her arms. A piercing shriek rent the air, and Eri opened her eyes to see a five foot tall white eagle with crystalline blue eyes crouched over her, his wings in a protective shielding gesture over her and her father. The remaining four Therians were shocked into fleeing. The eagle, however, took to the sky and pursued them, crushing two of their skulls with his beak, slamming another into the ground with his talons and killing him, and lifting the last one into the air only to drop him from a fatal height. When the eagle returned, Eri was terrified that he would kill her and her father too, but she discovered that he could speak into her mind and she into his. He introduced himself as Arashi, a summon creature born from her desire to fly freely and independently. By this time, Anton was about the pass out from blood loss, so Arashi carried him on his back to the outskirts of the city, though the effort exhausted him utterly. He waited until Eri caught up with them from the ground and disappeared in a cloud of white feathers, saying that he would always be there for her if she needed him. Eri kept one of these feathers and tucked it behind her ear, where it still remains.

Anton eventually recovered from his injuries, though both he and Vera were shocked that their daughter was a Saturate, and a Summoner no less. It was also a heartbreaking discovery because they knew she would not be safe in a city filled with Therians. They quickly moved again, this time to the city of Renrir, which was much more welcoming to Seedists. Her father set up his smithy again and life settled down considerably. However, over the next two years, Eri grew more and more restless as she learned how to control her powers and her bond with Arashi grew. On her sixteenth birthday, Anton gave her a custom-made two-handed sword and said that it was time that she set out and live freely as she desired. She left home soon after that with no particular destination in mind other than to travel and see more of the world.

During the next four years, Eri saw both the best and worst of humanity. Other Seedists treated her kindly, but she quickly grew to hate the Therians after witnessing many of their zealous acts committed in the name of their religion and also remembering how they had mistreated her in the past. She never stayed in one place for very long, taking odd jobs periodically to make money to live, and preferred to keep to herself. Arashi, however, became her closest and most trusted friend, the only one she never had to hide anything from. As their bond grew, her facial traits changed from the soft rounded features of her childhood to the sharp, angled ones reminiscent of a bird of prey. Her eyesight grew keener, her mannerisms became more aloof and free-spirited, and she started growing tiny black feathers at the base of her head. Lately, as the famine has grown worse, she has been paying more attention to rumors of a new Goddess about to appear but is also wary of the Therians, fearful that they may make a move if they get wind of her before she can come into power.

I have the IC thread up with the start of the preface to the story. I'm wrapping up my intro post and plan on having it up tomorrow if my workload permits; I have it drafted, I just want to refresh my mind to be more effective at polishing it before I post. I want to put this up now to give you all an idea of what the story will be like.

Let your first post be mainly to develop your character's background and personality, or how they began their journey. By the end of our second post I want everybody to be in Fuuren. The story starts after the night mentioned in the preface.

Hey, just so you guys don't think I've dropped off the face of the earth, I plan on posting in the next day or two. I've just got a lot of homework and other stuff going on right now (senior year of college...oi...), and I'm trying to get as much done as possible before my overnight field trip this weekend. I plan to post by Friday at the latest.

Nice intro quaker; I got a little worried at first that you might have disrupted my plans for my second post, but it actually worked out in the end. In fact you filled in a few blanks that I would have otherwise overlooked, very nice assist. Very Happy

To the others, don't feel obligated to start off where near Calon; feel free to make up your own towns or what have you as long as you are somewhat close to Fuuren, if not already there waiting. I wasn't planning on everybody meeting up until the end of the second post or the beginning of the third, but if you want to form little groups along the way then by all means do so.

Finally, Muse, your character can discover her Saturate powers, but she will be unable to tell that she is the Goddess at this point in time.

I've got the storyline post up, but I'm going to need another day to wrap up Loki's post. I have it 90% complete now, but I have run out of steam for the night.

Just to clarify a few things: Muse, your village is located east of Fuuren, but not Fuuren itself. I left the next part of the story open for you to decide how it progresses, whether you accept his offer or refuse it. Either way, you will be taken west just a few miles outside of Fuuren where we all will meet another NPC who will continue the storyline.

I will do my best wrap up the second half of my post tomorrow around noon CST so we can progress the story.

Ok, I have posted as Loki and we can once again continue with player posts. We're east of Fuuren, approximately at the halfway point of that broad lake to the south on the map. This is where I would like everybody to meet. I've already mentioned that Jake, Raewyn, and myself are there already, as to whether or not Raewyn is conscious, that is up to Muse.

At this point, just arrive at the scene so that you all can be present to witness the fight and be there to speak with the unknown man after I make the next storyline post that will follow your individual posts.

Quaker - I have left the traveling part vague so that you would have room to add dialogue as you see fit. I'm sorry I controlled your character as far as exiting the woods and getting in the vehicle. If you would like me to change it, please ask. I did it primarily to ensure that you would be at the meeting scene on time.

Also, I have added the NPC file for the unknown man, as well as an image for what Marinik looks like.
