Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Ysopet, Is your chracter just assuming Nahni is a female? Ze is androgynous, remember?
Kalon, I htink that is a good start, though I did imagine that there would be more scientists. I don't want to name all of the members though, in clase someone wants to join. We can assume that not everyone who is on the crew is part of the NAS right? I described in my post that there were non NAS military men aboard, and I want to know where they fit. Also, the journalist would not be a scientist, so according to your roster he doesn't exist. Perhaps we need to make a bit of room for the political members on board.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
I did not think she was completely androgynous... I thought it was a blend of features though with obvious natural gender traits. I could be wrong... in which case I might want to rewrite the whole thing.

She's not, but her true sex has not been revealed, even to us as the writers.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
What fun would that be?
Nahni Imix does have a gender. That gender has been concealed since age 6.
As far as looks...
Like the Duck-Rabbit illusion, Nahni Imix can be seen as either of two distinct beings. Man and Woman are present and easy to recognize with just a shift of gestalt awareness. (To spare Yso a google, gestaltism is the idea that we/humans first recognize the whole without breaking down the parts. In application: with just a few unconnected lines we are able to see the drawing of an entire woman. Structuralism is the opposite of that; it is the idea that we assemble elements into order to understand the whole.)
Structurally speaking, Nahni Imix has a rather feminine chin; high, rectangular cheekbones; broad, muscular shoulders; and long, slim fingers. (...and we might as well decide on a hair length. It's long and straight, worn in a simple, low-tied pony tail.) In short, there is a seemless blend of both masculine and feminine elements.
It would be very easy to assume either gender, especially as neither has particularly come to the fore yet. At will, Nahni Imix can become the epitome of either gender by changing zir presentation and manner. But that's a spoiler.
Incidentally... the Ranchac culture is based (VERY) loosely off of Mayan culture. The padoliers are my invention.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
I was with you on the names. We don't need to fill them in unless more people join or we start meeting NPC's, like the scientist guy and the journalist.
I can rearrange or reimagine the laborer category. It's amazing what a small number 44 is, when you start breaking it down. xD It's a good number, though. Feels about right.
No, they're not all in the atleric service. About half, it looks like.
Less, if you're stricter about it. Technically right now all the servicemen and operations personnel and probably half the laborers are operating under "atleric service." So just the scientists and a few others are outside of that.
If you narrow the scope of "atleric service" at take just the people involved with the ship, it goes to about half.
Then further you could say it's only the servicemen, which is about a quarter of the crew.
Then since some of the servicemen are territal or other, you could say just the spatian service and atleric service, since there is no official spatian service. That would bring the number down to about 6 or 8, depending on whether the flight ushers are counted.
But if you get right down to its strictest sense, given the first draft up there, only Captlan Jarrod and the other AS serviceman would be Atleric Service.
For your purposes, it seems like you're talking about the widest application: the people needed to run the ship and keep order. So probably two thirds of the people there can be termed something like N.A.S. personnel.
I hope all that is making sense. xD
I'll work up another draft to include the journalist and more scientists. ^_^

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Okay, Version 2.0. ^_^
2 officers
(1 Adliral, 1 Captlan)
2 ushers
(1 L&H, 1 C&S)
10 scientists
(multiple fields)
10 servicemen
(3 SS, 2 AS, 4 TS, 1 OS)
14 operations
(4 Tech, 3 Systems, 2 Medic, 2 Cook, 2 Care)
4 cargo
(general labor, driving, and maintenance)
1 consultant
(all-purpose advisor / advocate)
1 journalist
(record-keeper)
The consultant would be an expert advisor in everything from philosophy to politics. He's there to keep everyone on track, but this is balanced by his being low on the chain of command.
If there's a 10 / 10 / 10 of scientists, servicemen and operations, that leaves
2 / 2 / 4 / 4 / 1 / 1 managed by the officers.
The idea is to have buddy systems in place, in anticipation of spreading out and/or facing hardships on Barotyn. Except they're balanced teams of at least 3, as opposed to pairs.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
K, I'm not getting the numbers. In operations you say there are 14 but there are only 13. Then below you say that there are ten in operations...
I think I need a bit better explanation of what you are meaning by buddy system.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
It doesn't add up to 14?
*checks*
Oh.
Well, 4 for Systems, then. I like that better.
Okay, the team system.
In the course of coming up with the crew, patterns in the numbers got me thinking, and the team system is pretty much the result.
The idea is that, on Barotyn, there's bound to be a lot of unexpected things going on. When weird stuff starts happening, it's always best to have a plan beforehand--an effective one.
So, the team system is supposed to create the highest chances that, should anyone get split up or have to separate from the group, they have a balanced team between them and not just random people. By sticking close to their people, they ensure the greatest chances of this happening.
So however many scientists there are, that's how many servicemen there are (besides officers), so that there can be at least 1 serviceman to protect every 1 scientist.
Added to that is the operations personnel. Since that number totals more than the previous two, the appropriate number is added to the team system, and the remainder are to remain with the officers or the ship.
So the entire crew potentially can separate into up to 14 teams.
10 teams from the team system, and 4 teams each headed by one of the officers or ushers.
The first 10 teams would be teams of 3.
1 Scientist, 1 Serviceman, 1 Operations.
That takes care of your 10 scientists, your 10 servicemen, and 10 of the operations personnel.
You still have the 2 officers, the 2 ushers, 4 operations, 4 cargo, and the 1 journalist and 1 consultant.
In a situation that would require EVERYONE to split up like this, the consultant always stays with the adliral, and the journalist always stays with the captlan.
So after the first 10 teams, the remaining 4 look like this:
1 officer, 1 operations, 1 cargo, 1 consultant
1 officer, 1 operations, 1 cargo, 1 journalist
1 usher, 1 operations, 1 cargo
1 usher, 1 operations, 1 cargo
All these teams--we can call them "emergency teams," maybe--are decided beforehand either before or after launch. Maybe after, which would be cool; get to know people first and have it all settled some time before they arrive on Barotyn.
Now, in less emergency situations, or whenever, there can be larger teams. Like, there could be groups of more than 1 team. But the teams shouldn't separate.
So let's say the crew splits up into larger groups than their minimum "team system" teams.
Say double.
Looks like this.
2 scientists, 2 servicemen, 2 operations
times 5
and then combine an usher's team with each officer's team:
1 officer, 1 usher, 2 operations, 2 cargo, 1 consultant
1 officer, 1 usher, 2 operations, 2 cargo, 1 journalist
So there can be larger group divisions of the crew, but they should be made up of the 'buddy teams.'
So the people in your buddy team / emergency team / whatever, are the people you have become the closest with over the course of the voyage, by the time we reach Barotyn.
Not that you can't be close with more people or even everyone, but in a pinch, you're supposed to stay with at least those people.
Make sense?
I was planning on having the Adliral explain all this in character in the post I'm working on, once it's nailed down in here. ^_^

Guys, I hate to say it, but I'm going to need to take a break for now. There's been a death in the family and its draining all my energy, but I'll be back soon.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
You could talk to my character or have the journalist talk to my character and you join the conversation.
Or maybe she's more interested in the operation consoles and what's on the display screens.
Or there's also the adliral to talk to, if she wants.
Or she could go somewhere else in the ship, with or without someone else.
Does that help a bit? =D

I think my problem is there is just too much that can be done. I can't zero in on a specific idea. I'll re-read your post this afternoon and see if I can get some inspiration.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Hey Tori, I'll break it down for you.
It went like this:
> I posted at roughly the same time you had to excuse yourself.
> I nagged Yso until, about a week later he posted.
> Yso and I discussed whether we should wait for you. I was impatient and he agreed that it was fine to go on ahead. We decided it would be fine as long as we left you a place to reenter the story. I almost wrote a post.
> I was handed a reading list and spent all my free time working through that instead of posting.
> You came back.
So that's where we are. On the one hand: just pathetic. On the other hand: you've got virtually no catching up to do. =]
...oh, and some stuff with Gaddy and Kalon which makes an amusing side story in that cute Legacy ship thing.

O, thar you are Moon Ray!
Kalon, I think I want to have my character talk to yours, mostly regarding the somhains and whether or not your character thinks that there could be violence between the two crews. Seems like something she would worry about, not being a fighter. Do you think that everyone on the ship would have been trained in self defense and weapon use?

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
I edited my post to correct the whole issue with the tram leading to the atrium and then to the dock. Instead I had the tram dock at/near the space tether and it's implied Dan made it onto the ship from there.
EDIT: Since Danark is a prisoner I assumed he wouldn't do much "mingling" with the "colonists" as you called it Ysopet.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Sounds like a plan, Gadreille.
They would probably have had some basic self defense during their physical conditioning, but nothing too extensive as a requisite for being on the ship.
Plenty of time for combat training during the voyage.
If you PM me a rough draft of how she might introduce herself and her questions, we can grow it like a natural conversation. I'll probably have tons of ideas as soon as my eyes start scanning the words. ^^

Guys, I am having a terrible time writing for this RP. I've always sucked at sci fi, and this is proving to be just as bad. I don't really know what to do about it except encourage you guys to push on without me until I can get my head into the game.
Also, Artorius is out of commission for a while.

Hey guys, I'm back, and hopefully for a decent length of time. I had an internet crash, then a hard drive failure so… yeah, tough time computer-wise. BUT, I will do my best to catch up and get writing. No promises on when, I've learned that's bad policy, but I will have a post up.
