Ha! Nice.
Impressive use of perspective too. Methinks I detect a talent. *Wanders off to oggle in the artistic threads.*

WOW! That's awesome XD
Edit:
Sooo, I'm trying to avoid my Emorian nature of wanting to document every detail we create at the front of the OOC. Someone talk me out of it!

I've been feeling the same way, so if you are going to do it for me, I won't talk you out of it.
That looks awesome, Kalon!

Request denied.
Do it! Especially if this documentation includes an abridged dictionary of all the words we make up.
Just remember: A reference of details is useful; an essay is just something to read when we are bored.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
What if we made a Barotyn Concepts thread? Perhaps we could divy up the labor somehow.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Well, each of us can make a post in the Barotyn Concept Thread, decide who will be in charge of what information, and then edit our posts as needed.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Don't put too much effort into it! [/talking you out of it]
Just the bare essentials.
Give us a tool, rather than creating a library yourself.
We don't want to get too sidetracked by worldbuilding this time, I'm thinking. We just need a place to keep track of what we make up as we go.
Here's a cool idea.
Ysopet's an IC mod too, now, and IC mods can edit IC threads.
So we should have Ryona make the concepts thread or whatever it ends up being. Then she can edit it 'cause she started it, and both Ysopet and I can edit it being IC mods. That'll divide the labor and allow all three of us to edit it at will.
Something like 5-10 posts on the first page that we can all use, then treat the rest as related discussion.

I'm not sure if this would be an abuse of mod power, but If I made all of the posts, I could edit them at any time, you and Kalon would be able to edit them at any time, and Moon Ray would be the only one who would have to bugger us to fix issues or add info...
What do you think?

Right. I oppose being the only one left out, unless it means I don't have to write research reports and cultural essays.
Post is up. Ysopet may correct my spelling. The rest of you can bugger it.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
I was going to fill out the timeline section of the archive (at least, the first entry anyway), but I realized that we don't yet have a calendar. We have a year, 2440 (I think), but no other way of measuring time. Of course, each nation will likely have their own, since they still retain their native languages. However, there will have to be a single, standard way of measuring time out in space. Two at most, I suppose, since two different nations are launching ships. But I don't think that is necessary. So, first off, should we include months, or just stick to days? If we use months, how many are in a year? How many days are in a month? How long are days? In a nutshell, what is Xatl's rotation speed compared with Earth's? We've already established Barotyn's, so long as someone saved that information, but we still need Xatl's as far as keeping a calendar goes.
Oh, and I put the characters into the Archives as well. I will add Artorius as soon as he posts.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
We should probably stick to something so close to Earth's as to need no bother with calculations. We already have Barotyn to worry about.
I'd be fine either way, but if we mess with rotation speeds too much we might have unexpected results. :/

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Seconded. I hate math.
I'm not convinced you need to specify the lengths of months, days, hours, anyway. (Or any other measurements for that matter.) It's not like we're comparing Xatl to Earth. At no point is that likely to happen right?
Don't confuse things unless it's a piece of the plot. For example: Xatl has 45 Earth-hours in a day, so our characters are used to sleeping once during daylight and once during night; so on Barotyn where the world spins faster, the usual sleep schedules seem excessive and they all get eaten by day-time carnivores who can't believe a meal just lays down and sleeps when anyone can see them.
...and even in my example Barotyn has the earth-like measurements. So give us something familiar in the Xatl/Barotyn comparison.
The only reason I can think of to change the names of measurements is for the following scene:
A: "Go set this bomb EXACTLY twelve ponfips from my computer sensor."
B: *Puts the bomb exactly twelve inches from the sensor.*
Bomb: Ka-Pow. *destroys computer and sensor*
A: "You idiot! A ponfip is equal to a mile!"
B: "Now that the computer is exploded, I suppose that means I have to ask the natives for directions..."
Not that it might not be fun.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Well, then, final question. Are we using Earth months, are are we making up our own names for them, like we seem to be doing with everything else?
i.e. January, Frebruary, etc.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Keep the terms seconds, minutes, hours, days, weeks, months and years...
But lets not keep the names of months "January, February, March, etc".
More terms for the glossary, me thinks.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Artorius: I read your post, and for the most part it is fine. However, the ship is not docked in the city. The ship can't even withstand atmospheric pressure. In the center of the city is a space-tether, which leads to a space station called ARC. A shuttle ferries passengers from ARC to Leona's Fear. I don't know if you missed that part or just didn't read that much of my post...

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
I think by hangar and landing pad, he meant the space station, The Arc. Anyway, you may want to fix up the wording a bit to make it clear, if that's what you meant

Full points awarded for not making me wait. And for introducing us to more people on the Legacy. Bonus points for inventing Ytalnya. Already I have become accustomed to the quirks of your dialect.

Great post, Gadreille! I like that his theory is wrong, yet if using this world's terminology, he pretty much nailed it on the head!

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Sorry, I know its short. I'm fully ashamed of myself! xD
I don't know how you feel about me controlling your character, Moon Ray, and I don't have a good feel for your character, so I wouldn't be comfortable doing it anyway. So we'll have to do the old-fashioned previous post recap with dialogue for a while. For the most part, rather mysteriously, most of my role-plays managed to avoid direct character contact, or there were enough characters involved for me to just avoid the other players character, so in a way this is still new for me. Constructive criticism is welcome

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
For reference, I'm pretty easy about people moding my char. For example, you can bet Imix would be polite and agreeable to most things here. But even if you had zir respond with "Beat it, Chump!" I would probably roll with it. Maybe ze learned some bad Mandin translations in Somhai. Or maybe ze has already become offended by Zeum not bowing to zir.
And no apologies for a post. If you are unhappy with what you were able to come up with, it's probably because I didn't leave you a very good opening. So there.
I like it fine, anyway. Post will be up tonight.

Re: Surviving Barotyn OOC
Gadreille, what do you think of this as a start for who's in the Legacy's crew?
I figure there are these classes of crew onboard, in order of the chain of command:
Officers,
Ushers,
Servicemen,
Operations,
Scientists,
Laborers
Out of the 44 crew...
We have 2 officers, an Adliral and a Captlan. Any more in a crew this small would be overkill, is how it seems to me when I look at the numbers. xD
2 Flight Ushers. One for one end of the ship, and one for the other.
I thought about what all should be in the two block sides, and I came up with Laboratories & Hall (or L&H) on one side, and Care & Supplies (or C&S) on the other.
Apartments and other things would be common to both places. But yeah, for the ushers, 1 for L&H, and 1 for C&S.
8 Servicemen, further divided thus:
2 spatian service, 1 atleric service, 4 territal service, and 1 oceanic service.
This is to provide function in space as well as anticipate what might be needed when they land on Barotyn. Oceans are the least concern, skies little better, and ground probably needing the most.
12 Operations personnel. This includes:
4 Tech Hands (potentially 1 for each atleric unit)
3 Systems Monitors (for the Operation Deck control room)
2 Medics (potentially take turns on shifts)
2 Care Providers (think jack-of-all-trade nurses/psychologists/other stuff)
1 Cook
8 Scientists
Don't need as many. They're the brains once they reach Barotyn. You'd know more who's in this.
12 Laborers. Including:
1 Lead
6 general / miscellaneous hands that can be assigned lots of different tasks and can be flexible. Basically the go-to people if something needs lifting / moving / fixing.
The rest of the laborers would be more in the Cargo Bay.
1 Cargo Lead
4 Drivers / Maintenance personnel. I figure they have a few vehicles in there, as well as some large components for quick, sturdy structures to be set up once they land.
So:
2 Officers
2 Flight Ushers
8 Servicemen
12 Operations personnel
8 Scientists
12 Laborers
The 8 / 12 / 8 / 12 is so that there can be 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 and still have 4 Operations and Laborers either on the ship or with the Officers and Ushers.
That way there's at least 1 of each category if the 8 / 8 / 8 / 8 all divide into 8 groups of 4. Balanced groups. The Officers are more practiced in combat and leadership and can take care of more (and also can be more effective with more options, resources and protection).
