NaNoWriMo 2011
I know its early but I was wondering if anyone was thinking of doing NaNoWriMo this year? If you don't know what it is here is a link: http://www.nanowrimo.org/ basically you write a novel in the month of November. It can be a lot of fun and hard work. I remember what an awesome time I had last year and was wondering how many FoG people were planning on doing it this year.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I would LOVE to do it again!!! However, there is a big chance that I won't be participating this year, because I did it last year and Silvone and I always take turns. I'm not sure if he's wanting to do it this year or not. Either way, one of us should be attempting this again!

Awesome! Well, we still got a month to go before the start time so you got some time to figure it out. If you are competing are you going to do any outlining before or just make it up as you go?

I won't do any outlining until day 1. It's part of the fun

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
If I compete this year I will have a pretty detailed outline ready. I find it much easier to write if you have an outline. Then again my outline is based off the novel I wrote last year which was made only because I wrote a whole novel. So I guess either way works it just what works best for you.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I definitely think having an outline is a better way to go, I just feel like it's cheating to have preplanned ideas. I like to start on day 1 without any idea what to do and just see what happens

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
If I choose to do NaNoWriMo, I will be using the story that I am working on. Of course, they say not to do that, that it is cheating. I don't care. If it is motivation to write, then I will most certainly do it however I see fit. Obviously I wouldn't count any words before November 1. Since it is the only story I am really working on at the moment, and no one really grades the work, I don't see the harm in it.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
That's kind of the position I am in. If I do the contest I will be working on a story that I have been working on for a year. It wont be identical but its something I have been working on and have a basis for. I agree that it isn't cheating and that any words written before Nov1 is not countable. Still I feel that if I do the contest this year around it will help me complete version 2 of a novel I really want to publish. Something that I can look back at and say that it was totally worth doing.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I haven't typed anything up yet, but I am handwriting a single chapter of a story that is basically the most epic battle of all time; pirates versus ninjas. Except I'm also doing folklore, mythology, and the Mecha-Pirate and Dread Pirate. Yeah.
This'll be my first NaNoWriMo, though. Maybe I'm putting too much thought into this...or not enough. Oh, how I worry. Naturally, the "first chapter" is just an organizing epic of the style in which the novel is going to be written because I can't "formally" outline to save my life.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I know that Silvone wants to do this, and as it's his year he gets priority. But I'm thinking about giving it a go myself. I just have a feeling I will not complete it this year.
Count, the point of NaNoWriMo is not to worry, just WRITE! Try not to overthink anything, and just go for it.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I may finally write the Zelda novel together with my Zelda-fan sister. ^_^
I finally got yWriter5 to work on this Windows2000, so it is ON! xD
We have most of the plot already laid out, all but the final act, so if we can finally SIT DOWN TO WRITE IT... it'll be the best! xD
She has school and stuff, so it's been hard to find time. We'll see how it goes. ^_^
Our dream is that it'll be good enough and canon enough that we can submit it to Nintendo.
And if THAT works, our dream is to continue this new arc.
Shhh. ^_^

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
Good luck with that Kalon! That sounds like a lot of fun.
Ryona I know its up to you if you want to compete but if Silvone intends on participating please point him in the direction of this topic. I would love for all the FoG writers to keep connected during this NaNoWriMo.
And Count Ryona is right. Planning is good but the whole purpose of this contest is to make people sit down and write so you have something to work with later.

What a coincidence; I was thinking about NaNoWriMo today as well.
I'm thinking of joining again this year; last year was certainly very fun.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
Last year was my first year and I agree it was really fun writing with a group of FoG members. All of us trying to help each other and giving advice when we could. Yeah it was a pretty awesome experience.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I will certainly try to do this, but my prospects of completing it don't look very good. I've got a lot on my plate at the moment, and things are only going to get busier.
Like I said above, I am going to be working on an existing story of mine, but I won't count any of the words before November 1. It isn't really the point of NaNoWriMo, exactly, but I'm not going to waste precious time writing something else just so I can say I did NaNoWriMo.
I still have to go make my profile...

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
Don't they keep the profiles? I thought they did. Anyway I am going to be rewriting the novel I did last year so I am with you on using NaNoWriMo for things that aren't exactly what the contest was built for.

I am pretty sure they keep the profiles (if I can remember my info) but I would have to change all the content information and stuff.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I honestly don't think that I will have time to do this. I will try, but I've got a pretty busy schedule, and still so much that I need to do. It isn't really a good time to neglect my life.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I think I might give it a shot. My main problem is choosing which story/plot I want to do. Should I do a mystery novel, sci-fi/fantasy, or generic fiction.... Decisions decisions.

Flip a coin, then go with what you really wanted to do.
Or actually, here, I have something that could start you off.
I'm subscribed to get these tips from Holly Lisle--written a lot of fiction, has classes and stuff.

Holly Lisle wrote:

SOMETHING matters to you.
I don't know what it is. If you know yourself pretty well,
you probably do.
Some folks have no clue what they consider important, what
they'd fight for, what they'd walk away from a job for, what
they'd turn their world upside-down for.
But if you're writing, you MUST know the battles you would fight,
and why you would fight them.
These are the places where your fiction will be hungry. These
are the stories you'll start into that will start to feel like
they're writing themselves.
Get a pen. Get a piece of paper. And answer these questions
for yourself:
1) What single thing in my working life would make me
stand up and walk out of my job today, right now, even
knowing that I would burn that bridge and never be able
to go back?
2) What single thing would make me walk away from the person
I love most in the world without saying goodbye, without
explaining anything, knowing when I left that I would
never be able to go back, and that my loved one would
never know why I left?
3) What single issue or event would push me to stand up in
a group of people gathered in favor of this issue or event
and tell them that they're wrong in what they're doing,
and that I am willing to do whatever I can to fight them
and stop them, even knowing that if I did it, I might not
survive long enough to get away from them?
Give these as much thought as it takes to come up with
honest answers.
When you have the answers, you'll also have three stories you
could write, from the points of view of three characters who
find themselves in the situations above. These stories will
matter. They'll matter to you. They'll matter to the people
who read them.
Why?
Because in them, you will have taken your stand. You will
have gone for the jugular on three issues or events that would
completely rewrite your own life.
You will CARE about what you're writing. You will understand
your character, and you will feel every kick he takes and every
drop he bleeds.
And so will your reader.
Write with joy,
Holly
Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I am doing nano again this year! Last year was my first year and I won on the last day! XD This year I want to complete it in three weeks. If possible.
I never make plans. I always just dive in and write what comes to mind. :3

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
Ok everyone, with the start day coming up we should friend each other on NaNoWriMo site so we can all be writing partners. I figure we could use this thread to keep up with each other and encourage each other. My username on NaNoWriMo is Sunwolf007. If you are participating in NaNoWriMo this year post your NaNoWriMo username. I will modify the first post with a list to make it easier for everyone to find each other.

Alright WriMos this is the first day of the contest and I was wondering how everyone was doing with their word counts. As I was very busy today I didn't get a chance to do much and I keep modifying it so yeah. Lets go with not much. How is everyone else doing?

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I've opted to tackle NaNoWriMo this year with a radio drama script. I'm terrible at writing a novel, so... there.
So yeah; it's NaRaDraWriMo for me.

Re: NaNoWriMo 2011
I got a whole 42 words in yesterday.
But I have a few thousand from before, so you could say I'm not technically behind... but I go for the whole 50,000 each time, so right now I'm behind by about 3,358 words.
