Hello Danger wrote:Hahah, thanks Kalon!
@Raptorman, I'm pretty sure we do.
It's a single shot flint lock pistol... Not a machine gun.
If the ships of Emoria are equipped with cannons, which would only make sense, considering the naval battles that have been discussed between the various nations, then the use of gun powder has already been discovered. Its not far-fetched to say Emoria has invented basic firearms.
Not to mention Silvone has already read my character sheet where I mentioned there my character used two flint lock pistols. He didn't seem to have a problem with it then.
However, if Silvone or Ryona tell me its no longer okay I use them I'll edit my post, or if enough people seriously have a problem with it, I'll do the same.
It's really no advantage over all the enchanted armors and magics that are floating around...

Raptorman wrote:Do you not understand why guns beat swords in the end?
Get a group of people and give them guns, even if they are single shot having a group firing into a mob or line of onrushing swordsmen will be devastating, that is why for a swords and sorcery type of RP you don't typically have guns, because all it takes is someone getting clever and that is it.
Hello Danger wrote:I understand, perfectly.
What you aren't thinking about is it’s no different if you asked the same group of swordsmen to rush in on a group of archers or mages. Its the swordsman's challenge to close the distance between him and his opponent just like it will be the archer's, mage's, or in this case a pistoleer's challenge to last against the swordsman once he's in on him.
I see what you're saying. I just think you may be making it into something more than it is. The type of guns I'm talking about are no better if not less effective than a bow and arrow or crossbow.
Loki wrote:I see no problem with the simple pistols, especially since the pirate lacks in magic and armor. Sure, they pack a harder punch, but their range is poor and I fail to see how it is easy to dodge arrows.
Loki wrote:As it is possible to dodge bullets, their velocities may differ noticeably, but even arrows travel fast enough where a lined up shot at short range cannot be avoided. Keep in mind that these are simple rounds that lack in accuracy and are too blunt to make armor piercing a certainty. Out of all of the nations, it would make sense that a pirating or naval civilization would focus on gunpowder.
Especially considering what Danger and Loki said already:
A) They have no armor
B) They have no magic
C) They already have cannons
Re: Emoria: OOC
I do not see the problem with a single-shot pistol nor do I see the problem with gunpowder.
Honestly, I don't even know why it is being argued.
Morgarath is a 10,000+ year-old quasi-immortal and Lord of the Shadows who can shift planes without a portal and controls minions... the pirate has two guns with one bullet each.
I just don't see how you can say that the guns are 'over-powered' in comparison to what your character can do. It just does not make any sense.
Sorry if it seems I am arguing by comparison, but I see inconsistencies here.

Naval battles do not imply cannons existed, there were naval battles before cannons and we never said cannons existed

Re: Emoria: OOC
Actually, Deadeye's people actually have developed gunpowder and cannons, as it has been approved by Ryona and Silv. since the pirates steal, it would make sense for them to have cannons. And then as time went on, compact it.

Re: Emoria: OOC
Why does no one understand the problem with this?
Guns make everything else obsolete.
Magic takes time to cast, you point and shoot the mage before he can make the gesture or speak the spell and he is dead.
Hell you shoot a quasi immortal like morgarath with the gun and he is dead most likely dead, do you get it? It takes away the challenge of killing someone, all you do is point and shoot.
Guns screw up fantasy mediaevalesque worlds. I could live with dead eyes essentially scattergun cannon but pistols that are so common place a pirate would have them. No way.

Raptor, I get where you're coming from. I really do. But, you're making the flintlock pistol out to be alot more than it actually is. It's not that good of a weapon, and it's un-effing wieldly.
As for the problems with killing...well, he gets one shot, or two, before you shred him. It's calculated risk, plus, the things are prone to breaking, or jamming, or any number of problems.
And just because Boyd has them, dosen't mean the rest of the world has them. Pirates are lying no good ruffians who look for cheap advantages to best foes with years of training. Plus, the pellets aren't THAT good. Yes, they probably sting like a mother-f, but to a warrior trained to handle pain for his entire life, it's something to push past, and snuff the little worm who thought his pea-shooter could best you.
I'm not trying to shred you. I get your concerns. Hell, I'm worried it'll screw over my Tynir, who hate ranged combat. But, the flaws and the pros are balanced. Just gotta accept it, and try to work around it.

Re: Emoria: OOC
No, this is not a problem. As has already been stated, we approved the use of cannons and gunpowder. A single nation with a very basic understanding of firearms does not mean that they can simply rise up and take over the world with their "super-advanced technology of ballistics". I'm sorry Raptorman, but you are taking this too far. Guns can only take you so far. You compare guns to swords in our own world, yet that isn't an accurate comparison here. Why? Because we simply don't have magic. We never have. So how can you say that pistols of all things are too overpowered against magic? These aren't even modern handguns with fifteen round clips that can be fired off in a matter of seconds. You miss, you're dead. Its as simple as that. And it is the same with any spell. Not to mention...they are pirates! How many advanced, cultured civilizations are there in this world? How many of those cultures specialize in magic and warfare and politics. If the pirates did manage to advance their technology to a point where they presented a danger to the rest of the world, then the rest of the world would do what they are doing now: rising up to meet the threat. And they could easily conquer it.
Hello Danger, there is no reason to change anything. I haven't had a chance to read your post yet, but I'm sure it is fine.
My final word on this issue is that the current technology level exhibited by the Pirates is perfectly acceptable, and any further arguments concerning Hello Dangers post can be continued through Private Messaging.

I'm sorry, but we already agreed that one-shot pistols are allowed, back when DeadEye asked. Kalon quoted all of the appropriate things. This decision has already been made.

I hate to do this given what happened last time but you are actually wrong on that. I can quote dead eyes original question, it was for shotgun like cannons that had to be towed around, not for pistols.

The principle is the same, only a matter of scale and what is shoved down the barrel. Regardless, the GMs have spoken and the subject is closed for all intents and puropses.

Cannon's were talked about in the OOC, pistols were talked about via PM. It has already been decided, and either way, Loki is right.

Re: Emoria: OOC
- Spoiler:
- Also, if a pistol shot can scarcely penetrate steel, think about all the better metals some of our characters have.
If the pirates with their gunpowder were so much of a threat, they would have a lot more power than they do. Since all they have are a few islands, we can assume that there is a solution to their guns, even if we don't know about it.
It might not even be all pirates who have them. Pistols might be recent technology in Emoria, for all we know. Boyd seems to be a high-level pirate, so it makes sense that if anyone across the whole of Emoria were to have a flintlock pistol, it would be him.
Edit:
Ack, how did so many people post before me? It didn't take me THAT long to post this, did it...? Oh well; I guess it's resolved. ^^
Re: Emoria: OOC
Not quite resolved; but we'll get there. Hopefully.

Just for the record this is exactly how I perceived pistol use! I highlighted the points Kalon made that I had already considered but had not fully mentioned. I did touch on the heavy armors/enchanted armor, which I figured would prove against a simple bullet. The last part Kalon mentioned about them being a recent technology, and not every pirate carrying them is something I considered also.
Note: In my post the larger pirate who was looking to fight Boyd, he didn't have a pistol and didn't expect Boyd to.
I figured not many pirates would have them, and even fewer would be good at using them. Thanks to Kalon for bringing those points up.
I'll get with DeadEye about a few things to expand on the pistols/cannons/gunpowder of Emoria.

Re: Emoria: OOC
I'm going to sound like a super nerd for this, but I look forward to that conversation Danger. I actually researched primitive firearms to get an idea of what they'd be like. Considering the composition of the first black powder weapons, you were very astute in mentioning the white colored smoke from the shot Boyd fired in the bar. Well done.
In regards to the discussion about firearms and their effectiveness in a world like this, I would only rely on a pistol as a one-chance surprise attack. Considering that even a modern .50 caliber machine gun round can sometimes ricochet off of steel, (lead is a soft material compared to steel) I wouldn't rely on it at a long distance or at an indirect target. Hell, at the right angle, a 5.56mm round can glance off the surface of water.
Anyway, I'm going to stop now before I bore everyone to death on ballistics and guns etc. I was a gun nerd wayyy before I was a soldier, lol.

Out of all things, Deadeye, a gun is probably one of the cooler things to be a nerd about. XD

Re: Emoria: OOC
Just so it's a bit less confusing, you guys might want to hash out the gun details in the world building OOC or via PM's, since this is supposed to just be about IC posts, though I can see it got a bit off topic XD
Being a gun nerd seems way more useful than being a dragon nerd, like myself...especially considering they don't exist

Re: Emoria: OOC
Great post, Hello Danger! I really liked it
We'll wait for Kathryn to get back and into a position to start posting again, and then I say we start with the meeting. Elric and ImmortalSin aren't going to be posting, and have already informed me. We are also waiting on Sighlent, but I haven't heard from her since we started and I don't feel like waiting until she has the whim to decide to join us. So, once Kathryn is back and ready, we will start the meeting. In the meantime, if there are any loose ends for the intro you want to tie up, do so now I'm going to post another short post, and that might be my last unless something interesting comes up.
Once the meeting is going, it will likely be in Kathryn's hands. I would make sure to mention those who didn't show, like Elric, Immortal Sin, and Sighlents characters if they don't post by that time. Just for the sake of referencing them. Maybe remark on how odd it is that the Breale didn't show up. I don't really need to direct anything else, because it seems we've all got a good idea of where this is going

I actually forgot about you two...I wasn't sure if you would be attending the meeting or not. If you are, and you have posts in progress, then we will certainly wait. I have no intention of making you rush if you are trying your best. I understand how hard it is to find time for these things. I hardly had time to log on the past couple of days.

It's not so much time to get on(although that is problematic) it's just that Shadow has fallen into a funk, because her post go vaporized. It's understandable, and I'm trying to prod her out of it. Just slow going...
But thanks for waiting. I don't want to miss this intense council. Everyone has something to reveal!
It's exciting! *cue scotty voice from star trek*

That does suck...I know how that feels. I learned, however, that rewriting something like that makes it come out better the second time. It is harder, but it usually comes out better. Sometimes you miss some things, but often times you add in stuff you never thought of before. Its like the final draft. Hopefully she can get it out again....Plaguewalker wrote:It's not so much time to get on(although that is problematic) it's just that Shadow has fallen into a funk, because her post go vaporized.
