Songs that make you cry...
So I was just sitting here listening to probably the most beautiful rendition of Jeff Buckley's "Hallelujah" and started crying. Like honest to God, just started bawling because it moved me so emotionally that...well it was just very powerful. I'd like to believe that I'm not the only one out there who has a song or two that will make them cry so feel free to make me feel better by posting them here. Oh and for the record, here's the song that did me in. I don't know...it's just SO beautiful and so powerful. I wish I could makes something beautiful like this. If I could I would feel as if I've accomplished something wonderful in my life...
Anyway, enjoy!
Anyway, enjoy!
Re: Songs that make you cry...
While Arcade Fire from the Where The Wild Things Are trailer makes me rather emotional...it hasn't made me cry. The same with the musical piece from 28 days later when Frank gets infected.
But...Ryona had better post here. I know there are songs that have made her cry!

Re: Songs that make you cry...
That is a beautiful song, Sigh.
For me, it's two songs in combination of late:
"Iris" by the GooGoo Dolls -
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WkRcGV4Tpys
and "What Hurts the Most" by Rascal Flatts
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=h8iWEktQhg0
It isn't the music for either - it's the lyrics alone, and the story created from them.

And then there's Acoustic Curves, from Animusic.
That aaaaaalmost made me cry, there at the end. Dunno why; it's just awesome.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
It took me a long time how to learn not to cry to this song... Music by Howard Shore "The Bridge of Khazad-Dum" (OST) or "Gandalf Falls" (Complete Recordings) from The Lord of the Rings: Fellowship of the Ring.
This one also makes me swell with emotion. Especially at 1:22. Music by Howard Shore "Forth Eorlingas" (OST) or "Theoden Rides Forth" (Complete Recordings) from The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers.
For those that haven't seen my wedding video, I did manage to incorporate LOTR music in my wedding. The music playing is the music that the bridal party and I walked down to. Knowing this you know how important these soundtracks are to me. ^_^
Also, for those of you who don't know...I have a deep respect for Theoden King, so much that I named my son after him...so while these snippets may seem kind of over-embellished or perhaps just out of context, they hit me close to home.
Edit:
This version of Let it Be also makes me cry...The child's innocent cry for survival, and then the gospel's desperate plea for justice...if you haven't seen Across the Universe, and you can handle musicals, I recommend it.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
After three weeks of pulling My Little Emo through TWEWY, only to watch him get shot by someone he trusted very much, and killed in cold blood, only to have him wake up in the middle of the street, alive, and be graced by this song....
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UGqpMIMt8K4
I cried. Both ends of the spectrum. Sadness and Happyness. It fit so well....

Re: Songs that make you cry...
OMG that's another song that makes me cry as well Ryona! The boy's funeral while they're playing "Let it Be" even makes my husband cry, and he thinks he's made of stone! I'll have to get around to listening to all of these later, but I definitely will.
In the meantime, practically anything from this movie will put me to tears, but this song in particular is really hauntingly beautiful:
It's not necessarily the movie itself that upsets me so much just that it brings to life all of the truths that occurred when the Titanic went down. I get very emotional when I think of anything pertaining to that ship because it just shows how fragile life is.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Forth Eorlingas! Yes! That one as well.
Let's see, is there a song I've actually cried at....?
Oh, yeah that's right. There was this one short gospel song...
*check to find it*
Ach, I can't find it online, but I remember the words.
It goes slow, with a lot of held notes. I think I have most of the words right.
[start]
Tired of a life without meaning--
Always in a crowd, yet alone--
Not knowing what I was seeking (needing?),
I walked down a long dusty road.
As the sunbeams shone brightly, I saw not (?)
Not a cloud--not a tree--where I walked.
Yet I looked, and I saw there, before me,
The shadow of a cross.
[buildup]
"It is I," said a voice; it was Jesus,
And a hand was outstretched to me,
[crescendo]
And my soul came alive in the shadow
of the cross of Calvary.
[end]
Even without the religious significance, just musically it's very impactful. I don't think I've ever heard it set to music (we always just sang it), but still, every time it goes through my head I can hear a full orchestra behind it.
Let's see... what else...?
Oh yes. You are Loved by Josh Groban. I often come close.
That and other songs by him, like, Remember When it Rained.
Aaaaand how about one more.
Let's see here...
Sadness and Sorrow is a good one, especially at the times it gets to the Naruto theme.
That's probably good for now. Enjoy!
(oops, I mean... Enjoy! )

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Igraine: I agree both those songs are very, very, very classic songs! "What Hurts The Most" is especially tearsome for me because I had a friend buried to it.
I can no longer listen to it without breaking down.
Kalon: When I first started watching this I was honestly like 'WTF?' but the more I continued on the cooler it got, and you're right for those who are truly appreciative of music, that ending was very damn awe inspiring. I'm really glad you shared this with us!!!
Ryona: In response to your LoTR fetish, I'll take your "Gandalf Falls" and "Forth Eorlingas" and raise you "Into The West." Or however they go about it when playing cards. I really wish I could have seen your wedding though! Everything about it seems quite elegant and just so amazing! If you have a video you HAVE to let me see it! Even if Silvone protests.
When LoTR's was over I literally cried for about an hour (after seeing the Return of the King) just because it was probably one of the most beautiful trilogies ever!
I love movies. <3
Oh, here you go Ryona:
Anemone: While I honestly have no idea what you're talking about, that is a very enticing song!

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Not a single song has yet to make me cry, but there are a lot of powerful songs out there. Anything from Agalloch's The White EP.
One of my favorite songs of all time though, and one of the most powerful, is something that I heard because of my mother. Hell Is For Children by Pat Benatar. Actually, I'm currently listening to the cover Children of Bodom did, which is just as amazing.

"Wake Me Up When September Ends" by Green Day
It used to come on the radio around the time Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast. It still, to this day, reminds me of that time.

Tonight's Music by Katatonia
Youtube normally suggests a lot of crap to me... I happen to love Katatonia, the stuff I've heard from them. I hadn't ever heard this one... I clicked it because I like Katatonia and I was in a mood for the kind of stuff they play. And then... this fit almost perfectly. Yeah...

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Oh, dear. Being a music junkie like I am, a lot of songs have made me cry my eyes out.
The only song that I just can't listen to any more though, is "Everchanging" by Rise Against. Has to be the acoustic version, though. So sad.
There are so many powerful lyrics though. I've cried over many a song. Anything from "Dancing in the Moonlight" to "Summer Skin" by Death Cab for Cutie.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
I constantly get depressed over this girl (who I'll never see again in around a month unless by chance...bittersweet) and I have a collection of music that keeps me sad and yet helps me get through those times.
Also, there is only one song that has actually made me cry, although it was only once:
The song, Love Story by Taylor Swift makes me emotional because that was her favorite song for a while and I rewrote a version of it just for her.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Honestly, no song, alone, has ever made me cry. What DOES make me cry is the memory that is attached to a song.
For instance, the song Hallelujah and My Way by Frank Sinatra is immediately associated with my grandpa and when he died, which, if I am alone, always makes me tear up.
But to hear music to make me cry out of the blue, it is yet unheard of for me.

It is the same for me, though sometimes it is not a memory but an idea, or a relation, or something of that nature. I don't often share what the songs that make me cry are linked to...that is too personal most of the time.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
True.
Like when I heard World in Union after the movie Invictus, that had me rolling. As with the Davinci code theme song, at the end of the movie, when Langdon speaks for the last time. That almost did me in.
Then again, those two songs are related to ideas: patriotism and religion.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
No One But You (Only The Good Die Young) by Queen will get me crying if I'm really listening. It's pretty much the song itself that gets me crying. It gets me thinking about the people I've lost in my life, while never too much in specifics. It's probably my favorite song of all time too.
EDIT:: I just remembered two more songs. Breaking the Habit with Linkin Park because a friend listen to that a lot when he was depressed and got me to do the same.
And the second is Going Down in Flames by 3 Doors Down, which I listen to when I was seriously down and it got me into a worse mood, and crying of course.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Only one song I've come across that'll get me shedding tears - which often makes me wonder whether I'm really as nice, caring a man as I like to think I am, hehe - is REM's Everybody Hurts. It's just something extra that pokes me right in the eye almost as soon as the second chorus.

Love Me Tender by Elvis Presley was the song I chose to play at my aunt's funeral... It always makes me cry now.
Also, pretty much any version of Aloha Oe.

The three songs by Iced Earth about Gettysburg, but especially the second song "Hold At All Costs" which refers the 20th Maine. The song is a personal tribute for Jon Schaffer (guitars/lyrics) to Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain. Tim "Ripper" Owens does an amazing job on the vocals in this song, conveying emotion greatly. An amazing tribute song.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
OMG, that Hymn to the Sea really always got me incredibly emotional, even as a child. I remember specifically being in the 5th grade when the Titanic came out, and for some reason, I was SO in love with it. One of my teachers had the music on cassette tape, and she had it sitting next to the pencil sharpener, so every time I'd go to sharpen my pencil, I'd look at it and feel all sigh-worthy. xD I loved the movie, despite whatever type of feedback it may have gotten.
EDIT: Also, I cried hardcore to that song at the end of Return of the King.
Here's one that always gets me. It's Brad Paisley and Alison Krauss' Whiskey Lullaby.

The end of the Return of the King makes me cry anyway. It's so sad. And it's over!
*bawls*
Okay. Got myself together.
"Whiskey Lullaby" is incredibly sad, Fate. It has made me cry once or twice, I'll admit it.
Music is so powerful that way.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
Okay, I JUST saw this thread and I sat through and listened to a good majority of the music here and now I want revenge. lol. So here are a few songs that made me cry.
For those of you who HAVEN'T watched Cowboy Bebop. I suggest you do, best anime ever and one of the best soundtracks to anything I have ever owned. From that anime alone there are 5 songs that when I hear them I immediately get depressed, but THIS one was the one that impacted me the most. Such a beautiful song and for a while after first buying the soundtrack I literally COULD NOT listen to this, especially in public. >.> (listens to music constantly in her art classes) Anyway, give a listen and be sure to check out the show if you haven't.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
I should be sleeping right now, but instead I'm going to spam you all with some sad/depressing/moving songs. >.>
This song always makes my eyes mist.
And there's this one. It doesn't make me cry, buuut...yeah.
Now this one? Yeah. I cry every freakin' time I hear it.
Doesn't make me cry, but it's very...moving for me I guess.
When I saw this the first time I bawled. I don't know why but it set me off that day.
Last but not least. It was hard to pick one song from the soundtrack, it fits the movie so beautifully. The whole movie had me in near tears.
And now you all know my deep dark secret! I'm a friggin horrible sap.

Re: Songs that make you cry...
I have two here. And they are the same song but in two different videos. Why? Well one is among the better fan made music videos I've ever seen. Maybe one of the best music videos I've ever seen period. And it caused Manda to cry. So I wanted to see what everyone else thought.
And this is JUST the song. Which in itself is very powerful.
Lyrics:
I wish that I had known in
That first minute we met
The unpayable debt
That I owed you
Because you'd been abused
By the bone that refused you
And you hired me
To make up for that
And walking in that room
When you had tubes in your arms
Those singing morphine alarms
Out of tune
They had you sleeping and eating
And I didn't believe them
When they called you
A hurricane thundercloud
When I was checking vitals
I suggested a smile
You didn't talk for a while
You were freezing
You said you hated my tone
It made you feel so alone
So you told me
I had to be leaving
But something kept me standing
By that hospital bed
I should have quit but instead
I took care of you
You made me sleep all uneven
And I didn't believe them
When they told me that there
Was no saving you
And this is JUST the song. Which in itself is very powerful.
