1 Year Before the Battle of Yavin (before Ep 4/Destruction of Alderaan/Death Star)
IC Info:
As the Alliance to Restore the Republic, colloquially known as the Rebel Alliance, came together, after the signing of the Treaty of Correllia, prior to the destruction of the Death Star, many different groups were folded into the Alliance that existed prior as independent anti-Empire operations. These groups retained their command structure but gained considerable support from Alliance HQ itself in the form of starfighter or specialist support.
It was realized that there would be situations where HQ would find out too late to respond, and that some sort of mechanism needed to be put in place to allow for a high degree of initiative. The decision to establish a branch of small, highly skilled teams with a diverse talent base to address problems as best they could was made and Alliance Special Operations was born.
Alliance Special Operations, distinct from the more military SpecForces or Alliance Intelligence, was established as a means to conduct long-range clandestine warfare with minimal supervision from Alliance HQ. Assigned to broad sectors with no specific orders, they had the ability to decide what their operations would be and had broad latitude to assist other Alliance units as they saw fit. Often composed of some of the most talented recruits for the Alliance, people with a great degree of skill but no particular taste for military discipline, these teams were where the Alliance sent the bounty hunters, smugglers, slicers, fringers, mercenaries and others whose skills and potential for covert warfare would be wasted in a traditional military structure or whose attitudes made them unsuited for military discipline.
Most SpecOps teams procure their own equipment and use their own skills to fund their operations, traditionally requiring and using little from the Alliance's own stores. Improvisation and self-reliance are the hallmarks of SpecOps teams, as much as their idiosyncratic, non-military manner of operating. Seat of the pants, high risk operations are their forte, sometimes to pull the heat off Sector Force units or even as a decoy for intelligence operations. These brave, perhaps even brashly so, beings are one of the many front lines of the Alliance to Restore the Republic.
SpecOps Mission Group Hotfoot is one such group, fighting and dying in the shadows of the Empire, a diverse group of beings from diverse backgrounds and of diverse motivations to fight the Empire. Given a broad mandate and near-autonomy to find ways to throw a wrench in the works, as only a diverse array of beings with their skills put together can.
One such broad order is to assist a popular planetary leader, currently neutral, against an assassination plot against her life that is intended to be used by the Empire to frame the Rebellion and turn the planet against the Rebellion. Hotfoot is to stop this from happening, by any means necessary.

OOC:
Okay, so this is Star Wars. Don't be fooled though, this is not a military RP in the sense that it's all ranks and salutes. These guys are covert and on the pointy end of the stick, a collection of mavericks expected to be creative and work up their own solutions with minimal input from HQ. All characters will be a part of this unit. Typically, however they get to the Alliance, recruits with a high degree of skill but a certain degree of independence are shunted off to Special Operations; it's a bit of a backhanded compliment. One is considered highly talented, but also not as controllable as the military would like.
Characters can be from a variety of races and backgrounds-- it'd be boring if they were all armed to the teeth shooters, and the reality is that the most useful characters would often be slicers (hackers) and mechanics or smugglers. These sorts of people have a variety of skills that can be used in their job.
Yes, this means a lot of different characters can be involved. As a Star Wars geek, I did decide to work up a few character ideas for people who might be floundering, and I'm linking alien races for people. You DON'T need to be a Star Wars fanatic to play this.
Specific character restrictions: Only one force-sensitive. I'd avoid playing a Jedi Knight survivor, all serenity and philosophy; the Empire years after Order 66 have been hard, a lot of people fell. A 'gray' Jedi is alright, but even then, most of the survivors were ex-Padawans who got cut loose and were lucky. A character that was trained somewhat by a Jedi on the run is also cool. By the same token, there are other options. First come first serve, but there will be some scrutiny on this one to make sure the Force-Sensitive character isn't overdoing it.
Character Ideas:
Races:
- Wookieepedia - A general resource for races/things/equipment in Star Wars.
- Twi'lek - The head-tail chicks. A race that often finds themselves enslaved to others.
- Nikto - A tough species that traditionally find employment with Hutt Cartels.
- Rodian - A bizarre reptilian species with a comical look, but from a culture that glorifies death and hunting, often found in the fringes of space as smugglers, assassins and others. They look cute and harmless, and it's a facade they use quite well on the unwary.
- Droid - The workhorses of the galaxy, often sent to do jobs to make organic lives easier, there are nonetheless some considerable surprises to be found among various examples of these programmed, self-aware machines.
- Verpine - An insectoid species from the Roche Asteroid cluster known for their technological skills; possibly one of the most adept engineer species in the entire galaxy.
- Wookiees - Big, hairy, scary and often misunderstood, but highly useful. If all else fails, pull their arms out.
- Duros - Blue skinned, red eyed and noseless, this race is known for their daring and as one of the first spacefaring races in the Republic. To hear the Duros tell it, they invented courage and the hyperdrive.
- Bothan - A furry humanoid race with vaguely canid features that are well known for the ferocity of their internal politics, their prowess at subterfuge and spying and their ferocity toward those they deem racial enemies.
Assassin Droid: Alright, why not? HK-47 was the bomb. If someone wants to play an HK-series droid (might wanna watch a youtube video of HK-47's speech patterns to get the mix of sarcasm/contempt/bloodlust that makes HK-47, and the HK-series at large, the bomb among droids) it can be done; HK-47 was an ancient model, from four thousand years ago, but there was a factory for HK-series droids on Mustafar during the Clone Wars. Or play an entirely different model of droid-- make one up, perhaps? Other ideas include a reprogrammed culinary droid with a databank full of explosives recipes. The Alliance frowns on the use of such droids, but they find a lot of use in the fringes where Special Operations tends to work.
Smugglers: They have all the right skills for this sort of job; Smugglers are good at getting in places they aren't supposed to be and getting out. They've got a variety of different skills, including piloting, subterfuge and negotiations. Conning the Empire and bluffing their way out of trouble is a way of life for smugglers. They might be wild and undisciplined, but they aren't stupid. As the Empire clamps down, many of these people hold their noses and go to work for the politicians that run the Alliance. Special Operations is something of a dumping ground for the type, being that they don't really take well to being put under military orders.
Slicers: The Empire relies on information technology, so did the Republic. So of course, people, programmers and so forth, that knew how to exploit the system/use it for their own gain. Being that many of these people already do not like the government and bemoan its information control, they are often snapped up by Intelligence or by Special Operations when they do find their way into the Rebel Alliance.
Bounty Hunters and Mercenaries: The Imperial Army and the Rebel Alliance Army are not the only guys that know how to handle a blaster or do tactics; some of the most feared fighting beings in the galaxy are bounty hunters; they are already trained, already skilled and already proven, and SpecOps tends to pick them up because they often have little patience for dealing with the excessive formality of military life. Bounty hunters, with their ability to track and capture their quarry, often on slender information and hearsay, using surprise and stealth, are often as useful as smugglers in these sorts of groups.
Other: Medics, technicians, pilots of various types, electronics specialists of various stripes. Anyone that is creative and can think fast in a jam.

Re: Star Wars - Desperate Days - Recruiting
Character Sheet
Name: Dral (Mando'a: "Strong, Bright") Kelborn
Species: Human
Age: 21
Profession: Bounty Hunter/Mercenary
Planet of Origin/Birth: Nar Shaddaa (born)/Manda'yaim (raised)
Appearance: A leanly-muscled, fit young man with fairly wide shoulders that taper down into a slender waist. He has somewhat swarthy skin, but blue eyes. His hair is dark, but he shaves his head and leaves only a goattee on his chin, tapered to a point beneath his lower lip. It gives him a fairly aggressive appearance, keeping with what one might expect out of Mandalorians.
Equipment:
- Beskar'gam, dull green, (colors -can- have significant symbolism in Mandalorian culture) with sensor suite, target assistance communications descrambler and enhanced environmental sealing and other typical HUD systems. He painted the armor with the occasional odds and end caligraphic pattern along collars, hems and cuffs, or along the bottom rim of his helmet; it almost looks like embroidery. Painted handprint over his heart - token from girlfriend. Mounted weapons: Wrist-mounted vibroblade.
- a N'gant Zarvel 9118 Carbine, heavily modified; folding stock, pistol grip, foregrip.
- a WESTAR-34 blaster pistol w/ quick release holster
- Verpine Pistol - a type of projectile weapon, highly fragile, carried in a secure case, most of the time.
- Rebel Alliance-manufactured Disruptor Pistol - highly illegal, devastating at close range.
- Golan Arms M-1 Grenade Launcher, various loadouts. (Break-action, single shot grenade launcher, like an M-79)
- Durasteel chain
- Duraplast boot-dagger
- Datapad w/holo unit
- Utility/survival belt w/ bells and whistles multi-tool.
- Mesh Tape
- Binder Cuffs
- Asai Emerald stud earring, momento of his mother (Mandalorians tend to wear token belongings of beloved dead relatives as a ritual rememberance)
Personality: Dral is a 'kill or be killed' sort of fellow, reflecting the brutal pragmatism of Mandalorians -- they don't generally worry too much about human rights and the philosophical osik the Rebellion tends to embrace, though they do believe in staying strong and fit to fight in order to preserve those things for themselves. On the other hand, he's spent time in places like Alderaan and Nar Shaddaa and so forth, and has a broad enough view of the world to understand that not everyone thinks "Mando." Except that in most cases, Mando'ade have it right and everyone else is fairly deluded. He's conflicted as to what he wants to do about his girlfriend, Osana Lath, whom he joined the Alliance with but is growing apart from. People are often surprised to find that he has an artistic talent, as it goes against the 'mercenary thug' stereotype of Mandalorians. Granted, he is Mando to the bone but with a patina of aruetyc culture. He's fairly closemouthed about his family, but that's a no-brainer; the Alliance is infiltrated with Imperial Intelligence agents, despite all the counterintelligence.
History: Born of a Mandalorian father and the odd black sheep Alderaanian that decided to leave the paradise and become a bounty hunter (and join the Mando'ade herself - there's a strong adoption culture among Mandalorians) his parents were killed in a speeder accident on Nar Shaadaa when Kelborn was only six years old. He grew up as the adopted son of another pair of Mandalorians, a couple that couldn't have children. In Mando culture, adoption was common, often to the point of couples adopting orphans from other worlds who were not part of Mando culture.
As a result, he grew up in the traditional manner of Mandalorians, learning the family business of bounty hunting and skill at weapons on Manda'yaim, aka Mandalore. His aliit, or clan, was extremely diverse and multitalented, which led him to learn from a lot of highly experienced people in a variety of things. However, a strange sort of talent developed with him in playing in his aunt's garage scrapyard where he began to sculpt and paint and experiment with visual representations of different materials. Eventually, other Mando'ade started to look him up for a little embellishment on the armor or a vehicle, or for more pedestrian sorts of artwork.
For a good number of years, his mother's wealthy Alderaanian family, wondering what became of the black sheep daughter, sent out hired people to track her down. However, his clan were very good at erasing traces of their existence (some of the members were wanted by the Empire) and it took considerable luck to find a trail. At the age of 17, he was contacted by one of these agents and agreed to return to Alderaan to give the bad news to his aged biological grandmother.
By this time, as Mandalorians start their adulthood at age 13 or so, after years of training from age 8 on, he had some of his own resources and used them, with his grandmother's encouragement, to enroll in the University of Alderaan, mostly to study, ironically, art. Despite the culture shock, he did fairly well until his third year, when political problems in the University with dissident groups related to Chancellor Bail Organa and his then-girlfriend's involvement forced him to flee with others, with the help of his grandmother.
He wound up in the Rebel Alliance by chance, with a shipload of other political refugees, and while Mandalorians are traditionally suspicious of the aruetiise he himself was on the wanted list. He had a choice to go back home, but decided against. Because of his background, he was assigned to the maverick command, Alliance Special Operations, because it was evident there was no way that he'd take orders from any regular officer without considerable creative interpretation-- as always, Mandalorians had a highly informalized command structure and concept of rank, and it clashed with the Imperial/Republic modeled Alliance Armed Forces. He was, at the same time, in no way suited to be an officer, despite his evident skills and experience, in a regular military unit; he was Mando'ad to the bone.
His relationship with his girlfriend grows ever more distant as he becomes involved in the murky but interesting work of Alliance Special Operations. The relationship is dying on the vine, but lingers without resolution because of the distances involved.

Re: Star Wars - Desperate Days - Recruiting
Character Sheet
Name: Fennery Che (Fen for short)
Species: half Etti, half human
Age: 22
Profession: Pilot/Smuggler
Planet of Origin/Birth: Born en route to Etti IV on a trade ship.
Appearance: Fen's skin is very pale and in some lights has definite blue undertones. Her hair is black and wavy, she keeps it cut above her shoulders, with bangs to keep it out of her eyes. Her features are delicate and sweet. Fen inherited her coloring and delicate features from her Etti mother, but unfortunately (according to her) she did not inherit the slim tall build. Instead, the little pilot stands a diminutive 5'4'' and has a broad set of hips though keeping in shape has kept her healthy size and weight. She wears a loose set of pants and a long sleeve, tight fitting black shirt. Most days she's got a short, 3/4 sleeve jacket that she wears over top of that.
Equipment:
-Small backpack for essentials, carries a small survival kit usable for most planets.
-SSK-7 Heavy Blaster Pistol
-Q2 Holdout blaster
Personality: Fen was raised to talk back. She's a spirited woman who loves the stars. She doesn't much like being under authority and tends to find her own goals to be the most important. She is committed to others by way of personal relationships: hence those she considers her friends or family have a huge significance, others less so. Being half etti, she doesn't identify with with any particular species and so feels little loyalty to either. Fen loves little things and big things, she has a sense of wonder that can eclipses her sense of the people that are close to her. She is an excellent pilot however and has a quick and clever mind, especially when it comes to manipulating and avoiding the law.
History: Fen's history is her own. For now.
How's this work for it?

Che is approved.
Nice move with the obscure near-human species.
I'll be assigning a starship for group use. Probably a beater, fixeruper light freighter that's essentially stock. The Alliance isn't exactly rich and SpecOps mission groups are expected to be self-sufficient.

Re: Star Wars - Desperate Days - Recruiting
I'm probably due to post in two RP's tomorrow (well, today, technically, but I am getting eight hours and a real breakfast in before I tackle that.) After that, I have to get "Everybody Dies" going (that won't take too-too long) and then I'll concentrate on this.
Starwars is my favorite, so don't get me wrong. I just have other things on the burners so I'm gonna clear it all tomorrow and get moving on this. I'm tempted to just start posting, because the RP can be done with three and if others wish to join in, they can. I keep an open policy on that stuff, because I hate to bar newcomers from joining when they may have a lot to offer.

Re: Star Wars - Desperate Days - Recruiting
Character Sheet
Name: Kell Dra'na
Species: Bothan
Age: 27
Profession: Slicer/spy
Planet of Origin/Birth: Bothawui
Appearance: Standing a bit over 4'6", Kell's facial features are strongly leonine and is framed by a 'mane' of hair that forms a full beard and falls wildly down to the middle of his back. His fur is a rusty red, fading to black at the tips, and his mouth seems always to be curled into a nervous, worried frown. He is not 'strong' or 'muscular', but rather thin and fit, perfectly built for slipping into and out of pretty much wherever he wishes to go.
He is commonly seen wearing a pair of deep brown pants and long-sleeved tunic, with various gadgets, tools, and even some weapons in pouches on his belt, leg, and a bandolier strapped across his chest. His tunic also works to conceal his right shoulder and the right portions of his chest, parts of which have been burned hairless while others bear scars that could have been caused by grazed blaster shots.
Equipment:
- Self-Modified datapad
- Various belt pouches containing various slicer-and-spy-type gadgets, as well as containers for his datapad and disks strapped to his right leg
- ww-41 Cryoban Grenade (x6, held on bandolier across chest )
- 12 defender microblaster
- Cloaking device ( Also on Bandolier, though down by his hip rather than across his chest )
Personality:
Kell appears to be quiet and shy, sticking mostly to himself and choosing to avoid others as much as possible. His usual response to conflict of any kind is to simply disappear, vanishing to hide until the situation is resolved or blows over. You could say he is a bit of a coward, or simply selfish, but he will fight back if necessary, it's just that usually he doesn't have to, having done most of his work alone.
A pessimist to the core, he's always thinking about the worst-case scenario, and what to do if this or that should happen. On the whole, his personality has proved conducive to his work as a hacker and spy, allowing him to complete missions quickly and without incident. He takes some pride in the fact that he's never been caught, but it is also a topic of constant concern for him, as he wonders just how long his luck will hold.
As far as relations with others go, he doesn't really have any. He'll answer your questions curtly enough, asking none of his own unless it happens to be something particularly interesting and dealing with electronics. Usually, he simply stands and stares, watching others as they go about doing their things, lost in his own mind and thoughts.
History: Information on Kell's past is... Sparse, to say the least. He has never been one to talk about himself, and any information regarding his past has been hidden and protected with paranoid zeal, lest someone find anything that could be used for blackmail. What is known, is that he became quickly recognized for both his skill with computers and technology, as well as a knack for vanishing out from under people's noses. He worked within the Bothan spynet for some time, and was known for his ability to get his hands on information (whether it was exactly what had been wanted or not) and returning alive and unscathed time after time.
As for why he is working with the Rebel Alliance and their SpecOps divisions now, is a mystery. However, it may have something to do with the scars on his right arm and shoulder, as well as his extreme pessimism.

Approved, posted.
So I sat down today and started writing out ideas, minor characters and other pertinent information for the plot. When I've got some sleep under my belt, I'll be in a better position to brainstorm it from there on out and come up with something cohesive. But I have a pile of notes and index cards, which means that I have plenty to work with from brainstorming. Now I just need to put it together and get things going a bit.
I'll still be accepting characters, but I am under the impression that four is what we are going to work with and I'm fine with that. I'd rather get this thing going before it goes stale.

IC is here
Okay guys. Feel free to bring in fighters any time you feel like it, whoever decides to run scanners. It'll be six Z-95 Headhunters, whoever reports it.
Kaislynn's character gets to do the weaving, dodging and getting out of the way. CR-90 corvettes are too tough to fight head to head, and the Intruder has no weaponry to do it anyway.
Deadman, your character is probably in charge of transmitting the datapacket to Serat's ship, which includes hyperspace coordinates and so forth.
For the purpose of this, Serat will eventually follow, but if you guys want to NPC that a bit, go for it.
And, let's PLAY!

All righty, time to start! Kinda hard to dialogue (much less run scanners or copilot) since I have NO idea who, if anyone, understands Shyriiwook – but if any one does, please let me know! If not, well… just part of the challenge of wookiee RP, I suppose? heh

At least one of the characters should know it and be able to translate.

Oh, huge oversight, I added a link to SpecOps under Wookieepedia. It breaks down where SpecOps stands, how it's different from SpecForces and so forth.

Does it matter who our wookiee translator is? I mean, I don't understand Shyriiwook but Fen could . . . maybe oO

It doesn't matter to me in the least, Kaislynn, who would or would not be able to - I don't want you to feel obligated to be "the one" at all. If it fits in with your character and where your history of her has taken her, then by all means - it'd be helpful. If it makes no sense for Fen to know Shyriiwook, then don't worry about it.

It actually would make sense for her to be decent in understanding it. Probably she'd have a working knowledge but without the extra finesse of real fluency

With me, Kaislyn? Or with our OP of awesome and amazing, the one... the only... *drum roll please* Member of the Month Heyseuss! *the crowds go wild!*
hehehe He's either going to kick me from this RP, or put me on ignore, or something horrible for that... But oh heaven HELP ME I couldn't resist!
And seriously Kaislyn - your post with the pilot Fen? I loved it! I've never written science fiction type stuffs before - I'm so glad I have you and Heyseuss to follow along for guidance with this. And as far as fluency with Shyriiwook goes... I don't think anyone really speaks it who isn't a wookiee - they just kinda sorta understand it, and talk back in basic, if that's what you meant?

Well yes, darling Igraine with you. I don't know if you remember but when you joined at the beginning of the summer I posted on your welcome thread I believe and we planned to rp at some point (since I was going to be gone all summer) in the future. and now we are by total happenstance lol
And of course with Heysuess too! I've only seen him around on the boards but I've been super in impressed with what I've seen and I'm stoked to be in his rp especially with Starwars I love starwars so HURRAH! for Heysuess!! (MEMBER OF THE MONTH) ::throws confetti::
ooh and on the fluency. what I was getting at was that her range of topics isn't fluent. So what she understands is limited. Say she could talk shop but not so well on philosophy, she understands the vulgar but not so much the poetry. Metaphors slip by her a little and she has to ask questions occasionally for clarity: does that make sense? This is based on my own understanding of learning a language

Re: Star Wars - Desperate Days - Recruiting
Hey guys, I am totally sorry. I've had so much going on for the last few days, and I promise that tomorrow I will have a post up for this RP. Usually, I have time to work on this stuff, but tonight I just barely got a post out in my other main big thread and this one...well, it's really too late for me to start.
That's the bad news.
The good news is that this will be easy to write once I sit down and write it and I absolutely will have it out tomorrow, hopefully early.

Re: Star Wars - Desperate Days - Recruiting
Got two more up.
So basically:
The Correllian Corvette is powering up its turbolasers, there are six Z-95 headhunters swarming around, one slightly damaged, and the orders are to get out of that spacelane and navigate through the asteroid field to shake 'em.
By the way, the Intruder does have shields...they just aren't very good. The Alliance doesn't have lots of military grade equipment to spare and it all generally goes to the fleet and not to SpecOps, who can look out for themselves. (Hint, hint, pilot and engineer characters)
By the way, feel free to improvise a bit. Use the environment, come up with off the beat ways to solve a problem. Creativity is cool, and don't worry about upsetting the applecart; the plot isn't so locked in that it can't be modified by a little ingenuity on the part of someone.
Also, feel free to use my AIM if you want to coordinate character interactions. I don't bite.

No worries. We're just all getting over the start of an academic quarter and/or recovering from illness.

Oh, next post, Kaislynn, we need to be out of the asteroids and into hyperspace. Since you're the pilot and all.
If possible, I'm hoping we can pick it up pacewise.
