Fair enough, a Guerilla team operating behind lines, and Decius getting separated from his squad.
And I knew it was far fetched, but I'd just read all the horrible ways Drop Pods can die in Starship Troopers, so it jumped into my head.

P.s. Thanks for the Pic, mine was the only one Google could cough up that I liked.

Well I based the picture on the one you posted, with the Corvus helmet and the stripe, and put your weapons in too! Razz

Astartes rarely, if never die in drop pod actions. They're too fast to be shot down and the Astartes are strong enough to endure the descent and the landing, even if it smashes into a building.

Heyseuss, glad you like the plan. When you type up your post though, don't add actually finding any of the Thousand Sons, okay? Wink All part of the plan!

I believe we're just waiting on MachDhai now, or is someone else without a reason to arrive on the planet as well?

I doubt that. Read Grey Hunter recently and Sergeant Hakon is proudly informing them of all the grizzly ways they could die. This ranges from AA-Fire to simply one of the flaps breaking off and sending them in way, way too fast, which makes sense as most Drop Pods are pieces of ancient equipment.

Post by Tempest Mon Aug 24, 2009 6:54 pm

Hahaha, I'm sure that is just good old Space Wolf talk. They do like to talk like that, especially if it makes what they are about to do look even more brave and heroic! Razz

Also, I wouldn't put too much stake in what Black Library publications say, since they have been openly declared by GW to be non-canon accurate - save of course the Horus Heresy series which is supervised by GW agents.

There is much diversity among BL publications, especially since many of the Horus Heresy books state situations where Drop Pods land wrong or smash into building sides and towers, only to have the occupants disembark safely.

They are also described as being so fast that 'by the time you see them in the skies, they are already upon you.'

This is reflected by the most accurate source - Board Game rules. In the rules it is clearly stated that you cannot deal with them until they are down.

However I am sure that there has been the occasion of a Drop Pod landing wrong due to either planetary interference or inaccurate co-ordinates on launch which mean they plummet into oceans or other severely rough terrain. Still, I see most of the Astartes pulling themselves out of such a situation.

Pretty sure I don't have a reason to be on the planet as of yet, but I do have a suggestion: Same basic principle as Tykrieg, with some small differences. I might copy this into the bio as well.

After amassing a sizable group of heretics, pirates and other cutthroat traitors to the Imperium, Mihales took a ship from Medrengard and set himself adrift in the Warp, as the Chaos Space Marines are wont to do. After a few years of gallivanting around the galaxy in this manner, the Iron Warrior found his warband significantly thinned by battle, so much so that he plotted his course for Medrengard once more to refill his Rolls (Yes, that is capitalized so as to emphasize it's importance.).

Unfortunately for him, the Immaterium's tides were not as favorable to him as they had been, carrying him far from his chosen destination, and instead into direct contact with a Tau battleforce. Luckily, or maybe not, for him, the fleet was already engaged by the aforementioned Tyranid's. After smashing a ship or two, his own was badly damaged, so he punched out in his personal drop pod, leaving his ship and crew to the mercy of either the 'Nids or the Blue's, whichever got there first. He is now screaming planet-side, with only his weapons and arms, plus an emergency stock of rations kept there for that very purpose.

Okay?

A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000] - Page 2 Empty Re: A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000]

Post by Tempest Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:42 am

No, not really okay. Hmm

See, if you jumped ship in that area you would plummet to one of the Tau worlds, not the planet that everyone else is gathering on. If you read that scenario properly you will see that Musta's character does a warp dive, thus taking him away from the battle by at least a considerable few light years. It is then that he reaches the planet we are gathering on.

Still, I like the linking idea of you turning up at the space battle, so how about this.

After Mihales finds his ship torn out of the warp in the midst of a battle, he sets about fighting his way towards a suitable jump point so that he can escape, as even he knows that to stand and fight would be suicide ('Even a warped mind can see the odds stacked against it!' Razz )

However, he realises that they will never make it, caught between a crossfire of Tyranids and Tau. So, in a display of quick thinking, Mihales orders his most valuable warriros into the DreadClaws and launches them at a nearby Tau Escort vessel (Yes, the same one that Musta's character is in Wink ). Mihales' Dreadclaw, being the first one to be launched and thus the first one to pierce the hull, is just in time for the Escort ship jump and is pulled away with it. All the other DreadClaws roar through space to be obliterated by enemy fire or smash into other ships. Mihales ship is left at the mercy of the two warring fleets.

Meanwhile, Mihales is thrown into shock at the sudden transition, feeling the momentary warp drive that Tau ships make. His DreadClaw, still attached to the Escort vehicles hull as it emerges into the planet's low orbit, begins to feel the strain of the gravitational pull threatening to tear it away. Taking quick stock of the situation, Mihales uses the unique ability of DreadClaws being able to launch after landing. The DreadClaw tears away from the Tau ship as it is torn up in low orbit and shoots away through the atmosphere, a contrail of plasma at its back, before smashing into the jagged foothills of some nearby mountains, some kilometres from where the others land in the ruins. The DreadClaw tumbles through the foothills on its momentum, toppling the sharp rock formations that emerge from the sand, a prelude to the dry mountains.

When it finally comes to a rest on its side, its plates are buckled and rents let the sand in. Smashing open one of the hatches, Mihales emerges onto the barren desert. The few Chaos Marines that accompanied him in the DreadClaw are dead, impaled as girders snapped loose or pummelled to death against the metal during the rough landing. Only one remains surviving, other than Mihales, who is knocked unconscious (I will play this Iron Warrior to give you some company and interaction, as well as helping to further the plot line on your side). He drags this unconscious Marine from the ruined DreadClaw to wake him.

Well, what do you think? By the way, did you see my post earlier concerning your Power Claw? You should take a look at it.

For the love of God, tell me there's a spot open. And you said any character... I'm taking this literally.

Character Sheet

Species: Human.

Name: Nykerius.

Age: 178

Gender: Male, of course.

Appearance: See here.

Subdivision: Black Templars.

Rank: Emperor's Champion (you said ANY character.)

Weapons/Equipment: Black Sword and Armour of Faith, obviously.

Biography: I'd rather have it be revealed gradually -- some things are obvious, of course. Nykerius is a Black Templar, went on one of their Crusades and was chosen as the Emperor's Champion at some point. The rest... is to-be-revealed history.

When I said any character I meant race, mainly, and I thought it would stand to common sense that we can't all have super awesome powerful characters like the Emperor's Champion. Otherwise, you know, I would have just been Marneus Calgar and to hell with the rest.

This role play isn't about being the incarnation of bad arse, it is about a group of significantly different characters working together to survive despite their clashing interests. The fact that you chose to be a Black Templar but also hold the prestigious rank of Emperor's Champion is showing me that you are mainly interested in being bad arse.

Revise your character or do not join.

You're wrong. Shocker!

I only chose Emperor's Champion because I find it a very intriguing role (receiving a vision from the Emperor? How does he deal with this sudden responsibility thrust upon him? Can he even live up to it? No source mentioned that the Emperor's Champion is necessarily a more skilled Marine than the one next to him... does he fear failure, is he insecure of his own abilities? Sure, the Emperor has marked him, but has he ever done anything that remarkable? And now, all of sudden, he has to lead his Brothers into battle, etc etc) and, frankly, because I like the look of the Armour of Faith. I am very well aware that this isn't about outshining the rest, and I wasn't planning on doing so. I do like my characters to stand out, though, in one way or another...

But of course, this doesn't mean I don't see your point. Maybe not the point you were trying to make, but I will think of a different and less powerful character.

It isn't about whether I was wrong or not, it is about the image you're giving me.

Such a role would be intriguing, if you had any Brothers to lead into battle, but in this role play you will not, so all of these emotions and thoughts you are bringing up will pretty much be void outside of the first post.

Thank you nonetheless for your decision.

Having previously been forced to go through all that, I imagine an Emperor's Champion would feel forced to take the lead, believing to be responsible for his fellow Marines. Then I bet there's characters that don't want him to lead at all (I bet) and then there's a power struggle where the Emperor's Champion has to realise he isn't responsible, but is too stubborn and proud for that.

At least, that's how I imagined it. Still working on the new character...

Aye, that would be interesting, especially with an Ultramarine! lol!

Still, I don't like the lore implications of having a character as significant as a Black Templar Emperor's Champion going missing. It makes things a little too cheesy as well! Razz

Also, I don't want that getting in the way with my GMing the storyline.

As you can see, the augmetic limb isn't really a Power Fist. Looks more like a claw to me, really, hence my apparent misnomer. Satisfied?

A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000] - Page 2 Empty Re: A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000]

Post by Guest Tue Aug 25, 2009 2:01 pm

I've got a few general concerns and criticisms here, not over anyone's character, but of the attitude going into this. It's been bothering me, since before I stuck in my character.

Short version: We're arguing too much.

I realize that because Warhammer has a lot of published canon, there will be arguments over what is and isn't this or that in the setting. I think we need to, from the outset, realize that the concept of 'house rules' has to apply here, and that means the guy in charge, the guy we voted to run this, has final call.

I realize arguing is a dinner table past time for a lot of people, but at the same time, I think we'd actually get to the play faster if we could just accept that there are good reasons to do something a certain way and we don't have to know what's going through the GM's minds and he shouldn't have to justify himself down to the minutiae with citations of chapter and verse.

Because if the pace continues with some of this, we're going to be one bogged down thread, and I have worries about that. I realize we are all fans of a game here and have considerable knowledge of the game, but can we please chill a bit? It's only a game.

I realize I'm not necessarily the best person to give this message; I've booted people out of my threads before on the basis that arguing is too much trouble, so maybe I'm impatient, but this is like a ship and there's a captain. I also realize that I was very vocal in shouting down the other guy that came back to try and run this after months of inactivity, but after a certain point, we're not really doing much with the arguing.

Post by Ferrous Miles Tue Aug 25, 2009 2:29 pm

Oh, Hank, just had an awesome idea. Okay, the biggest part of the Black Templars is that they do not fight as an army, they fight as a band of brothers. If one person in their company falls, they all go battle mad to avenge him. So, your character is the last of a crusade, and you've seen every one of your brethren get shot down, or at least your ship got destroyed. So, now you've got your entire brotherhood to be fighting for to avenge, but without the cheesiness that comes from having the Black Arms and a vision from a God.

How's that sound to you guys? I was actually disappointed when the EC idea got shot down, since my character is pretty much WHO he would be gunning for, as an Aspiring Champion.

EDIT: Gah, idiocy on my part. Yes, Tempest, looks good to me, even if I wasn't planning on having another Warrior accompany me. In fact, you showed me something I had no idea about in the Dreadclaws. I was wowed, didn't really think there was much about 40K I didn't know, and two in one OOC. Good show, my good fellow.

Thank you Heyseuss. Your point is valid and well made. I do hate to be a dictator and go with that my word is final so stfu stuff, but I agree that if my points were less contested this role play would start up sooner.

I would however like all our points on the lore and story line to be clear, but this doesn't mean we have to argue about things.

Ferrous, I see what you mean now. That looks very much like a converted Power Klaw to me. Alright then, good stuff! Very Happy I also see what you meant by ammo belts as well.

Right, as soon as we get Hank's character in we can begin. I am starting without MachDhai unless he posts soon.

Edit: Hank, if you're going with Ferrous' idea I have a few adjustments to make. You would be part of a Fighting Company. Since the Black Templars are rumoured to have something like 6000 Brothers, when they have a Large Crusade it really does mean large. So if you're going to have all your fellows be gunned down then I prefer it to be a smaller group, so as not to have profound lore implications, like the Black Templars losing a sixth of their armed forces.

Anyway, when you do devise a character we'll sort out how to get you to the planet! Smile

EDIT #2: I am happy to see we are coming to terms Ferrous! Very Happy

All righty. Revised character! Just reposting the sheet with the necessary changes.

Species: Human.

Name: Nykerius.

Age: 102

Gender: Male.

Appearance:
A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000] - Page 2 The_Black_Templar_by_kingmong

Subdivision: Black Templars.

Rank: Initiate.

Weapons/Equipment: Power Sword and Storm Shield.

Biography: Nykerius was ambushed.

He and his entire Fighting Company, 75 Marines strong, were the victims from a stunningly clever Ork attack. As they build up their camp, they appeared to have walked straight into one of their traps and were subsequently slaughtered. Nykerius miraculously managed to stay alive amidst all the fighting, but was forced to see his brothers die one by one.

He finally snapped when his Castellan was cut down by the Warboss himself and caught in a furious gale of grief, Nykerius took up the Castellan's weapons and fought to the death with the Warboss to avenge his leader. With the help of the remaining brothers Nykerius succeeded and decapitated the Warboss with a final roar of fury and relentlessly chased down the now retreating Orks, although his brothers brought him back to his senses and they returned to their ship.

Only 7 of them were left. As they left atmosphere, their ship was shot and severely damaged. They managed to make it a few stellar systems away with a hastily made Warp Jump, but eventually crashed on a planet... with Nykerius as the only survivor.

As you see, I made my own version of how Nykerius ends up on the planet -- if you don't like it, please tell me, and we will work out something else.

A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000] - Page 2 Empty Re: A Clash of Interests [Warhammer 40,000]

Post by Tempest Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:49 pm

Alright, good. I like how you have good weapons but only because you lifted them from your fallen superior. Also it is highly likely, due to their reckless and straight forward manner of assault, that the Black Templars fell pray to such an ambush. I assume when you say that they were slaughtered you don't mean all of them save a couple, more like ten or twenty in the opening stages of the battle. That would also make sense in that it would give Nykerius time to slay the Ork Warboss while his Brothers held the overwhelming Ork numbers at bay.

However I don't like the idea of another large ship crash landing on the planet. How about this.

As the Black Templar ship returns to orbit it is suddenly engaged by the appearance of a Space Hulk, which the Orks used to invade this planet. The ship brings about its broadside but the Captain knows they cannot hope to best such a formidable foe. The Black Templars decide to board the huge craft in hopes of disabling it and avoiding a battle with it. Nykerius boards a Thunderhawk with some Battle Brothers and they begin their assault. However, as the Thunderhawks draw close the Space Hulk makes one of its infamously arbitrary warp transitions, pulling Nykerius' craft in with it.

The Thunderhawk is slung from the warp after the pilots manage to disengage from the pull of the Space Hulk, but the craft is heavily damaged and can thus do little to avoid plummeting into the nearby planet. The Thunderhawk soars down through the sky over a desert, headed straight for some old ruined structures. Although they have little time to pay it any heed, the pilots (and Nykerius if he is in the cock pit) notice a dark smudge on the horizon where a far larger ship crashed down (The Tau Escort).

The Thunderhawk smashes into an intact tower in the ruins and the flank of the craft is torn away. Nykerius' brothers manage to hold on but the Initiate is ripped out and hurled into the dunes near the ruins. The Thunderhawk proceeds to collide with one of the old sandstone buildings and erupts in a fiery explosion, killing the Black Templars within.

Do you like it?

Due to the nature of this event I would like you to post last, or at least when I give you the green light. Obviously there will be no order save for the first few posts while we get into the groove.

Well, I actually meant for their ship to be a Thunderhawk -- they were shot down before they even reached the Destroyer, or whatever their main ship was -- although I wasn't sure how to implement a Warp Jump and let it still make sense... so I kept the ship anonymous.

I like your idea though, so lets go with that.

Post by Tempest Wed Aug 26, 2009 9:26 am

Alright I believe we're ready to begin. Here I will list the initiating posting order which will not be carried on throughout the role play. It is just for the first posts. There will also be reminders of the context we have agreed upon.

- Tempest

- Mustakrakish

On the Western Fringes of Tau Space (where the Gue'vesa are most frequent) remnants of Hive Fleet Kraken have begun yet another attempt to consume Tau worlds. While Fire Warriors and Kroot fight a desperate battle on the assailed planet's, Tau warships engage with the Hive Fleet in space. During the battle, one ship, a Kir'qath Class Escort vessel, which carries a detachment of Gue'vesa (including Alixander's squad) sustains heavy damage which sees the Bridge command slaughtered. Alix, who was on patrol outside the bridge with his men, rushes in to find the devastation. Knowing that he cannot hope to pilot the ship with his men, despite his rudimentary knowledge of ship control, he opts to jump away in order to save the wounded ship and its crew, who would be helplessly massacred should the craft be boarded.

The damaged Kir'qath Escort Ship makes the random jump on Alixander's command and emerges from its Warp 'dive' to find itself in dangerously low orbit of a strange planet. The damage sustained in the battle, along with the sudden gravitational forces of the planet means that the ship is being torn to pieces and will not be able to pull out of orbit in time. Alix commands everyone to the emergency escape Life pods. Alix makes it off the ship in a Life Pod just as the gravitational forces tear it in two. Along with a dozen other pods Alix and his men plummet towards the planet.

The pods are scattered due to the hasty launch and Rothe's smashes down into ancient ruins amidst the dunes of a desert. Clambering from the ruins of the pod, Alix quickly finds that he is the only survivor and hurries to seek cover from the harsh sand storms. On his way to cover he notices a crashed Starfighter, painted in proud blue and bearing the emblem of the Ultramarines. Curious and cautions, Alix makes his way into the building closest to the crashed fighter.

So, in a display of quick thinking, Mihales orders his most valuable warriros into the DreadClaws and launches them at a nearby Tau Escort vessel (Yes, the same one that Musta's character is in ).

- Heyseuss

He is travelling through the Webway, with or without fellows, I don't mind, when he notices something out of a place, an armoured figure disappearing around a corner. He take off after them and notice that they are an Astartes of the Thousand Sons. Fearing that it is Ahriman attempting to breach the Black Library of Chaos once again he takes pursuit. Slowly the figure draws him away from the safer paths of the Webway to where there is a collapsed Portal. He goes to engage the being in battle when suddenly he is caught by eldritch powers from beyond the collapsed portal and flung into the warp, to emerge on the planet. It is preferable if you find yourself in the area of ruins that we are all starting.

- Tykireg

I would prefer something along the lines of fighting somewhere, perhaps one of those behind-enemy-lines that the Raven Guard are so famous for when Decius is stranded from his squad in a battle? Perhaps if you are in a city a building collapses, separating you? I don't know, I'll leave the details to you. Anyway, your character sets off and finds some bizarre temple like structure and enters. As he does so he noticed too late a ritual of cultists who open a warp portal which sucks him in. He is then flung out on the planet, like I said before, preferably near or in the ruins. Obviously not right next to the others but still.

Nykerius was ambushed.

Right then. I'll have the IC up ASAP. Can I request that in your first posts you do not interact with anyone and leave that to the secondary posts? Your arrival on the planet should be a long and eventful enough post anyway! Razz Of course, Ferrous is allowed to interact with his unconscious Brother, but since he is far from our characters he doesn't need to worry about meeting with the others yet.

I will make a description of the ruins in my post and from there you will be able to choose a location for your arrival. Of course, with Musta we have already designated a landing spot, and with Hank we can assume it is also close by and out in the open because of his crashed Thunderhawk. Tykireg and Heyseuss, you probably want to start inside one of the buildings, especially since you're being hurled through the warp. But like I said, leave the interaction to the secondary posts!

Alright then, those of you who have been following the thread will have noticed that I've been adding to it daily, unable as I was to finish it in one sitting. I found the time today however and I am finished now. The post was too big to fit into one post, so I spread it to two.

Some notes.

The tower I described was the one your Thunderhawk will crash into Hank, so feel free to demolish it.

Hopefully my description of the ruins will suffice, but I wanted to find you some visuals as well. After much futile searching I found this map from the game Halo apparently and it comes the closest to the kind of buildings I was describing.

Alright, let's go guys! Very Happy

Wow, that took me alot longer than I thought it would. Sorry about the wait everyone, but I just had to get it right. I didn't want to half-ass it. Anyway, now that its up, I believe Ferrous is next.

Ferrous, if you don't post or at least keep us aware that you are present I am going to skip your post to Heyseuss.

I've already sent you a PM as well.

No offense, I'm dropping out of this. If someone wants my character, feel free to take it. I can't do this whole factory line posting order thing. Too regimented, and I don't like the pressure environment of being told 'ready, set, now GET WRITING!'

Sorry.
