Closer - Nine Inch Nails.
It's probably an 'oldie' by now but it's still the best shit, and "The Downward Spiral" is literally the first CD I ever bought for myself when I got a CD player. I still have that CD, too.

Not an oldie, yet. Though last I knew anything older than '93 (I believe) is considered classic rock. Well, that is what I heard from a friend at least.

The Downward Spiral came out in '94, so it easily could be classified as classic, if that's what classic is classifying as nowadays. It's kind of scary, at merely 30, to think that the music I grew up listening to is now 'classic.' Then again, there are radio stations catering to people in my age group more than the younger age group with a lot of the alternative rock that was going around in the 1990's.
I have a hard time considering it classic, I was around when it came out. I still think of classic as the stuff that came out before I was born or before I was old enough to appreciate music at all.
Maybe that's what being an old fart is like; you realize that time's passing you by a bit.
Speaking of which...

NIN is classic? Wow...I'm falling behind in learning my genres...
Listening to the Muse album. The fact that they've got an excerpt from Nocturne in E-flat, Op. 9 No. 2 in one of their songs has caused me to fall in love with them all over again... The song flow is just amazing. So much stronger than Black Holes and Revelations, in my opinion.

Re: What are you listening to?
Just speaking from what I’ve heard, so it might not be considered a classic yet. The information could have been wrong, though it wouldn’t surprise me really. Personally, I still consider classics to be bands such as Led Zeppelin, The Doors, Pink Floyd, Blue Oyster Cult, Nazareth, Black Sabbath, Kansas, Boston, and so forth.

Re: What are you listening to?
I always wonder what they will call current music later on...
I mean, when studying art it was kind of odd to learn that modern art was actually a historical movement, and not contemporary. So...I just wonder in terms of music, if this is an era that will be called 'modern' later on, or if it will eventually fall into classic?
Yea this probably sounds silly, but I'm tired and posting it anyway.
Oh and I'm unfortunately listening to Can't Stop Rhyming Blues - Moose A. Moose...

Re: What are you listening to?
It is a curious thing. What makes me wonder more is what they will later call the multiple versions of music. Will our modern orchestral and film score music be called ‘Neo-classical’? Will the numerous styles of metal be called ‘Post-Metal’? What of music styles such as ambient, atmospheric, darkwave, industrial and so forth? Will they simply remain the same?
A curiousity, truly. I think that today there is far too wide a range of music to put things so easily into set genres. Something I am very thankful of, even if I don’t listen to a single piece of music from the mainstream industries.

Rebel Yell - Children of Bodom
Friend and I just got our copies of Skeletons in the Closest from the V.I.P package we ordered for the concert on the 9th next months. Some awesome covers, my favorite being the Hell if For Children. This song is awesome though, one of the few times I've ever heard Alexi do clean vocals.

"Countryman Fiddle" - The Aggrolites
"Dirty Reggae" - The Aggrolites.
LA-based band, ska/reggae. Good shit.
Addendum:
And then "Smack my Bitch Up" by the Prodigy came on. And I said, "it'd be bettah if de bass go 'boom.'" So now I'm paying back my neighbor a bit for his loud music much later at night earlier this week.

"Break On Through" - The Doors
When I was 17, I irritated my brother to death listening to this all the time. He started to really hate the Doors, because I just couldn't get enough. It wasn't a bad band to be infatuated with, in retrospect. That and there wasn't much good stuff going around in the late 1990's, probably because Kurt Cobain was dead.

Re: What are you listening to?
The Doors are a indeed a good band. Though I disagree with the Kurt Cobain being dead thing, but then I was never a fan of Kurt anyway. To me, American music died after the second album by Skid Row. For the most part, with only a handful of exceptions, it has stayed that way. That is just my opinion though, of course.

Though I'm not a great listener of folk, ambient stuff I do like, and I very much enjoyed listening to that. Thanks.
I'm now listening to The Blind House, from the new album by progressive rock/metal band Porcupine Tree. It's one of their best albums IMO, though it's received mixed reviews.
Re: What are you listening to?
I'm listening to "Two is Better Than One" by Boys Like Girls Featuring Taylor Swift"
Jonathan warned me that this song would eat my soul. Now I'm semi-depressed... but I still love this song now that I've loaded it, so I'm going to listen to it a few more times.
I actually like Taylor Swift. I mean, like Miley Cyrus, there's nothing overly special about her, but I still love most of her music. A lot of her songs are just... sooooo... freaking... cute... Like "Love Story" and "You Belong With Me." I also have respect for her, too, since she does what she thinks is right and good, and she doesn't try to win fame by dressing like a slut the way some singers who began as teens (( :: coughs :: Britney Spears :: coughs :: )) did, and yeah.
/rant
{EDIT}
Upon further inspection and deliberation... maybe this song isn't so depressing as I initially perceived it... but it still spoke to me a lot more than I would have thought. Jonathan did say it reminded him of me, so maybe I shouldn't have been so surprised.

Re: What are you listening to?
Taylor Swift looks a lot like a girl I went to school with; just more glamorized. I also kick myself for actually watching the video to Love Story one day... I was really bored. Seriously though, I feel dramatically out of place around here when considering the kind of music I listen to compared to everyone else...

Re: What are you listening to?
I listen to everything. My boyfriend listens to everything, too, so I get an extremely varied dose of things. I only know about Taylor Swift because of him, but he's introduced me to a lot of other kinds of music.
However, I only know about rock opera because of my favorite high school teacher. We turned Savatage's Dead Winter Dead CD into a fifteen minute skit that won us the banner at All State in our category. When I first read the script ((which was just the lyrics transformed into a script)), I bawled my eyes out. It's so sad, but it's so good. It's also based on true events though the cellist is actually still alive. Vedran Smailovic lives! ^^_^^
{EDIT}
I forgot to mention that while I listen to everything, I have been listening to modern stuff more because of the drive to work and such. I love having a radio again.
Also, why would you kick yourself for watching that video? It's soooo cute, and the fact that they don't kiss at the end is great. It adds to the appeal. The only thing I hate about that song is that she sings, "You were Romeo. I was the scarlet letter." I think she seriously had no idea what the scarlet letter really meant... I wonder if anyone has enlightened her since then?

Re: What are you listening to?
I kick myself for watching it because I hate country and am at times too much of a hopeless romantic for my own good...
Once again I'm listening to Sowilo Rune by Agalloch... love this song, and the band. I hope to someday see them live, but that is a rare thing to even occur. Figures, they're from Portland but rarely play live. ~sighs~

Apocalyptica are amazing. Finland (in my opinion) has many of the best (subjective, of course) bands around. Sweden and Norway have some great ones, as do Germany and the Netherlands but none can top Finland in my eyes.
