Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I would say so, yes. In fact, if you can draw on the high-end resources of the Order of Gedrich, I'd say take two mage pairs. Barthon is a knight of the order in addition to seeking Zephiris, so he'd warrant that kind of luxury.
The benefit of having two mages instead of one is consistency. They're going to be singing/chanting, loudly, in perfect unison, in a boat, on waves, for several days straight. If two pairs can alternate days, it would be a great help and would allow for the kind of constant and reliable increase in speed that urgent sea travel would require.
No more than two pairs, though. They're a valuable commodity, because it takes a long time to train. Nobody wants them drowning at sea. So yeah, especially if he can get that, figure a good 30 miles per day.

I think he will pick up the mages at Iyel'Del. It seems more likely, since that is a coastal city, to find mages that can work weather. And it will be safer since Barthon won't have to guard them from Aram to Iyel'Del.

Hmmmm... 3 pages written and they haven't even left Aram... I have a feeling this is going to be a long one.
Fortunately (or unfortunately, depending on if you plan on reading it) I was struck with sudden inspiration for a grand idea for character growth for Simion. But its taking a while to get through. Once it is done though, Simion will no longer be the simple page boy posing as a knight of an extinct order

I am having so much fun with this post... but I think I might just be over-doing it. Putting in too much detail and nonsense events. I'm wondering if I should just time-skip already. But that would be boring!

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I think there is going to be an update on the Treatise on the Order of Gedrich soon. I've added so much information to the Order now that it is just out of date... or at least severely lacking. I will let you know when it has been updated, in case anyone is interested.
And Kalon, I asked you in PM, but you might have missed it. Can spells that create light hurt or kill the shadow beasts in any way? Just wondering if they are sensitive to light or not.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Kalon, I finally remembered to do the village descriptions
Fenwater-> A small town located on the River Amros, Fenwater is best known for its bridge, which is open year-long. It also possess local fame for the quality of the vegetables produced there. A popular stop for merchants and trading caravans, Fenwater enjoys income from both trade and the tolls paid to cross the bridge. It boasts rows of neat, orderly houses, paved streets and an impressive square for such a small settlement.
Brookstone-> Situated at the foot of the Mountains of Smoke, Brookstone is an unimpressive place. A town of shepherds and farmers, it has produced little people of note. The only interesting feature is the nearby walled estate which belonged to the Mirland family. It had once been used as a summer retreat for the old lords, but in the last century had become their permanent seat, after they lost their other holdings. The last heir of the family, Barin Mirland, sold it to a prosperous merchant form the nearby city.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I hadn't thought about the light. They're fine with moonlight, so I don't know if just normal light will do. On the other hand, fire works fine, and water is extra effective. I don't see why light shouldn't have some effect. So, sure. Probably not a huge effect. Torches, for example, wouldn't do anything. But a magical light or some special artifact (no sure about those yet), might do something, I suppose. But the problem with light is it affects everyone. If the light is very bright, it might be hard on the good guys, too. I don't think light of that sort would have the effect water does; it might slow them down or blind them, and maybe make them a little weaker, but it won't, like, vaporize them or blast bits off them or make them melt. They're more inky/smokey than shadowy. One example: in the dragons' hilltop battle, S'harahe used a spell to set a shadow fire-drake's blood alight. So the shadow beasts have normal bodies; they've just been altered somehow and are all inky/smokey/blackish, and they explode into smoke when they die. And they melt in water.
I guess that wasn't a very organized answer, but hopefully I covered it. xD
As for the distance magic question, I was thinking about that, and I decided there's a very simple and intuitive answer. Since one attribute of the magic already is that the scale of effect is directly proportional to the volume of the vocalization of the spell, it stands to reason that long-distance spells are difficult-to-impossible. My idea for this is that the sound waves have to actually touch things for the magic to affect them. (so like if you were in a soundproof room, which you can't be, you'd be safe.) This helps solve the problem of identifying people to affect with magic. You say a name, and if it's only within that sound, there's little-to-no chance that two beings will have the same name in that radius.
So! What this means is that magic is most effective on oneself, or in places where sound carries--like mountains and oceans.
And in case you were thinking microphones and cellphones would circumvent this, they actually wouldn't, because it's a digital soundwave as opposed to a natural, analog soundwave. So a recording wouldn't do the magic. ^_^ Though a non-electronic megaphone would.
Looking forward to the Gedrich info!

Thanks for the clarifications, Kalon
Very little work done on my next Barthon post over the last week... I will post it up after the next small section though. Make it easier when it comes to reading if it is in smaller bits.
Oh! So, can I assume that the shadows would not attack in rainy weather? Or would it just hamper them?

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Oh wow, interesting question.
Yeah, I guess it'd be kinda tough for them when it rains.
If they did try, they wouldn't get very far. A little drizzle wouldn't do much, but full-on rain, yeah, I can definitely see it.
So yes! let's assume that we're safe when it rains. ^_^
We can say if it's raining hard enough for you to have to find shelter, you're totally safe. If it's raining but not enough to stop you from traveling, you might still meet something, but there wouldn't be much point. If it's only softly raining, they'll be a little distracted. If it's only drizzling you'd better not count on much. If it's just a mist, they'll be a bit irritated but can attack just fine.
Thanks for bringing that up!

You are welcome! Its good to clear these things up before they halt our writing, I suppose. Even though it might not ever be necessary...

Digi, I imagine everyone's kinda waiting on us.
We're finally in Telmural. How would you like to proceed?
If you'd like to discuss anything before moving forward, I'm always here.
No real rush, though. I know the holiday season approacheth. ^_^

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Speaking of posting, I've almost worked out a post for Barin and the Twins. University's been very busy though, eating up most of my time, so my progress has ground to a halt. (I barley have time to browse through FOG properly, sigh)
Still, I have a good feeling about this weekend so I may just come up with something

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I've been reading my printed document of this role-play, courtesy of the amazingly generous Kalon Ordona II I just have to say, it is absolutely amazing to read a physical copy of our role-play like a book, especially after Kalon organized the sections chronologically. Hopefully before too long I will be completely caught up with my reading.
As for my post, I have been too busy and far too exhausted to make any progress on my post. I would like to change that once Halloween is over. I have no more night crew shifts (for now) so I should find myself with more free time during the prime writing hours...

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I'm keeping up with the chronological version as we go, just so everyone knows.
Good post, Digi! I'll start work on a post for the morning to go before the King's speech, and then I'll PM you to discuss what they'll do in the coming days. I'm thinking she'll learn something at the church, or else get turned away for the time being, or some combination. Some element of mystery somewhere.
It should take at least a few days to discover anything with certainty, I'm thinking. After that, they'll decide what to do and how to proceed, and there might even be other elements introduced from outside. By that time, Barthon's group might have arrived.
In anticipation of that, I'm planning to develop the situation with the ships, so Silvone knows what to expect.

Ooo la la! Barthon is in love again!
By the way, Kalon, the copy you gave me is missing a few sections. No biggy, just thought you might want to know in case you left them out of your own digital copy.
The ones I've noticed are right next to each other in the IC thread: Barin's DAY 6 attack and Stion's Day 7 post. I'll print those out myself and add them to my copy.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Arighty, all fixed. Newest posts included as well. ^_^
I've probably mentioned this before, but just so we're all on the same page, there hasn't been a Columbus yet in this world to tell us all to start the new day at midnight. New day starts at dawn.
I bring this up after reading the timestamp "an hour after midnight, DAY 7."
In the chronological version, I went ahead and changed this to "late night of DAY 6." The references in the post to midnight are still good, since they're probably thinking of the candles, but for timestamps we'll stick with new-day-at-dawn.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I've posted the next segment of my long catch-up-post. I had a lot of fun writing this one (and putting in all of the side references and strange hidden details and such). I feel like there is a lot of character development in it, which is something I've found myself lacking in the past. I'm happy with it, and hopefully you guys enjoy reading it. There is still SO FAR to go, but I've got other role-plays to work on, so I'm taking a break. And I have the Ragner arc so Blackrock and I can continue as well.
Edit: Oh, and please inform me of any errors, inconsistencies, or noticeable lack of detail. I'd really like to polish my writing in this.
Edit-edit: And thank you, Kalon, for helping me out with the Sermon toward the end of the post, in the Court of Virtues! He pretty much wrote the whole thing, so I won't take credit for that

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Writing the design of the Mandor priests is giving me a bunch of concepts for the Sephiris version. When Katerina and Áirhath visit the High Temple, we'll get our first real glimpse. I guess that would be morning of DAY 21.
And we'll see more of Manis, too, probably. (the High Priest) ^_^
*PM's Digi*
I'm all excited. World-building does that to me.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Nice post, Silvone! (and Kalon too, I guess )
I'll also announce that, after a ridiculously long time away, Barin, the Hawks and the Twins are back! Here's to another wall of post made by Digi and me!
Anything that is an eye-sore let me know, I started working on this months ago and it was inconsistently written, with huge gaps in between, so I probably messed something up somewhere, despite the polishing I tried to give it. Next post will come sooner, I promise!

Yay for Blackrock and Digi!
And oh yes, Digi, is there an update on what we were thinking on? Let's not rush through our story arc, but do let's get it written!
In the meantime, I've started work on a dragons post, and I should probably come up with something for Gado as well. I'll pick up with Ezekiel in the post after that.
