I could drown my hair in chlorine a thousand times over for all it's good for when it comes to curls. My hair is so straight that it honestly doesn't do anything else! When I got married and had my hair done, the lady literally went through like a can and half of hairspray because it would NOT stay. Talk about good for nothing. Well at least it's pretty. I guess that's gotta count for something! Right?

Alright so...

Inerio: I just want to drive up to NJ for like a day just so you can dress me up! I love how cute you always look! With me I can only wear certain types of clothing otherwise I just look gay... Sad
I fail at fashion.

Fate: You're face is not too round! It's attractive! Like Kat said, think Penelope Cruiz and how hot she is! I could totally see you on the cover of some magazine!

Ryona: -Shudders- Yo Gabba Gabba gives me NIGHTMARES! >_<
But you look really cute with red hair!

My hair stops holding curls once it hits shoulder blade-length. Even without that length, I need a lot of hairspray, too, because my hair just turns back into waves after a while.

Aww. I fail at fashion, too. You should take me with you to Inerio's. XD

Lol oh, square shaped sounds so much better. XD I wish I was as good-looking as Penelope Cruz. She can really pull off her face shape lol. Oh, well, I guess the makeup helps her out a lot. XD

Aw, thanks, Kathryn and Sighlent! :3 That's sweet that you like my natural hair too. It's definitely a lot easier to leave it natural, since I have to keep reinforcing it to stay straight throughout the day if I don't. I could kind of tell that your hair was a little wavy, Kathryn. It's very cute. Smile

Wow, Sighlent, that's actually really cool that your hair stays so straight. I almost considered getting this thermal straightening (see here towards the bottom and here for more info), which basically straightens your hair permanently for 4-6 months. Therefore, I wouldn't need to use my hair straightener for a long time and wouldn't need to worry about spending forever on my hair. However, the process takes 3-5 hours to do for some reason and it is very expensive. >.<

You sell yourself far too short, Fate. You are really beautiful. It's also probably not a good idea to compare yourself to someone like Penelope Cruz. She has colouring than you do. You wouldn't compare a raven to a dove just because they're both birds.

I don't think she's ugly, but I don't think she's a total knock-out either. She's pretty when she fixes herself up.

I meant she looks better. She still looks all right when she doesn't. Most people look better when they fix themselves up. I don't look all that great without at least a swipe of eyeliner.

Most women don't fit the beauty standards of today without at least a little bit of help. Whether it's make up, hair product, a bit of support from an uplifting bra or a corset to tuck in that baby weight, or all of the above...

Why do you care?

I'll admit that I started wearing some eyeshadow and eyeliner in the past few months. I don't really attribute it to being more attractive--if anything it's just hindering my self-esteem even more. I think it's more important to be happy with natural-you than touched-up-you.

I've never understood expensive clothes for this same reason. Nobody really gives a shit. If they do--they're shallow and have no personalities. I make Wal-Mart clothes look good, so really, the name doesn't matter.

As women we're expected to be a bunch of things we aren't, and it's just all really demeaning. I can't say I share the insecurities, but expecting all of these things to automatically make you pretty is unrealistic. You should think you're pretty all the time.

Um yeah. I guess you're right Ack! But coming from someone who has the self esteem of a Brussels sprout (cause who actually likes those?) I'm not shallow but I do like nice clothes. Not saying I don't wear WM clothes either cause I do but sometimes I don't know... And I know when to appreciate it when someone looks nice. Fuel for the inferno I guess, but still. I don't think it matters what makes you happy so long as it does.

Oh, no. Not this argument again. xD

Because in the end, how you look matters, no matter what anyone might say to the contrary, no matter how much it hurts, or how unfair it is, how arbitrary it is... the fact is, even you care how you look. And you know what? You're right! So if you're all intent on taking everyone's advice to love yourself then you should go and make yourself happy.

Because it is human nature to be judgmental. One of the ways the brain operates is by comparison between what we believe things "should be" like in our inner worlds, and what we observe in our outer experience. It's virtually impossible to not make judgments. Whether one conveys those judgments to others is a different matter entirely.

If you're a human being, it's a natural inclination to want to look good.

If you are happy with yourself without makeup, cool. If you are happy with yourself with makeup, that's cool too. I think if you are a grown adult woman in the business world, it is absolutely necessary to be conscious of how you appear though.

I wear makeup as a direct correlation to how I feel artistically. If I'm happy and creative my makeup usually shows it. In fact, when I'm miserable and uninspired you can tell because I don't go out of my way to help my image at all.

As you can tell I'm my setup, I'm pretty friggin happy. Hence the hot tranny makeup.

Thanks fate Smile

I still have breakouts on my skin (URGH) so I do like a bit of mineral foundation to get the redness away. Also, I make a bit of extra cash by selling avon, so it's kind of important that I know what my product is. Apart from that, when I do go out to find my career, I'm expected not only to be qualified for the job, but to look presentable. For women, makeup is a part of that, whether or not I'm happy about it.

And I never mentioned expensive clothes...I shop at thrift stores o.0

I know everyone wants the debate to stop, but I have to stand up for myself. I'm not snobbish or rich or pampered. I'm just a woman trying to survive today's world.

That eyebrow piercing is awesome! I love those. Normally all the people I know have infected ones, which isn't quite so awesome.

By the way guys, I have a question.

Post yo' Picture! - Page 28 Lookup
Post yo' Picture! - Page 28 Pink

Now, lets conveniently ignore how unflattering the second picture is.

Does anyone notice how the right eye in the second picture and the and left eye in the first picture have a white-ish ring in them? Isn't that weird? At first I thought it was the lighting, but these are taken at different angles and whatnot. In fact, the second is taken facing away from the light source. It can't be a photoshop fluke because the first is completely unshopped. Does anyone else get that in their photos?

Post yo' Picture! - Page 28 Empty Re: Post yo' Picture!

Post by Guest Thu Aug 27, 2009 2:29 pm

My major is in communications, so I think I can answer this with a bit of...authority, I guess. Yes, it is completely based on societies views that women feel the need to wear make up. Every culture has a different view on how women should look. Some think they should wrap cloth around their faces. Some think they should cake their faces in make up. Some think their natural beauty is more than enough. Some think small feet or stretched necks are a sign of great beauty! But the truth is, in our society, most women won't be considered beautiful, by any means, unless they wear makeup, dress properly, or even have the proper body shape.

And no, you can't just go out and get/keep a job without wearing makeup. Its basically in the dress code regulations for most jobs. Depending on the union you are in, if you are in one, you may not be able to get fired for it. But in the more professional business world, even if you don't get fired, you won't get promoted. You will hit that glass ceiling that women have been hitting in the work world for generations now. You will see men around you surpass you. Is that wrong? Of course it is. But when you are stuck in a society that basically makes the rules for you, you have to play by the rules.

Yes, wanting to look good is the American way. That is because too many people in our society want women to look that way (particularly the media). I don't care how many people consider themselves too pretty for makeup, or too ugly without it. It doesn't matter what they think. It matters what society thinks. And for those who think they don't need it, they will. When they hit thirty, or forty, they will be wearing make up and wearing fancy clothes, because our society does not like older women. Penelope Cruz has to wear make up because she is not young. She is not pretty because she is not young. Do all of the young celebrities have to wear make up? Not really, though they typically do.

Every society has their view of beauty, but Silvone already got into that, so I'll leave it alone.

As for the job...good luck. It depends on the job. My job as a student assistant for archaeology was easy enough to get without make up. But in the anthropology club, work always comes first, and I quickly fell out of the spot light when I became pregnant. Pregnant was not that job's view of 'beautiful'.
Before that, I applied to a retail store. Considering the person hiring me was in charge of cosmetics, I definitely wouldn't have gotten that job on natural beauty. That person was a woman by the way, no dick sucking there.

I am happy with me. I come home and take off my makeup and lay in bed with my husband, and I am happy.
But out in the real world, in front of the society that I may not agree with but am stuck in, I feel more comfortable accentuating my good points and covering the bad. It's not that I don't like me. I'm not masking me. I'm just giving my best presentation. I don't think altered me is any better than unaltered me. I just have accepted that altered me will help me get that job interview, hold the work position, may even get me noticed enough for a promotion.

When I'm out in the field on a dig site, I'm perfectly happy with no make up, ugly dirty clothes, etc. I'm totally happy with myself. But when I'd head back to the office the next day, I needed to be presentable. So did all of the other women on my team, even the professor. i should say, especially the professor. She's the one who would have to take the data and present it to the SAA, and she damn well better look presentable when doing so, or no one will pay attention to her findings.

It is a species attribute though. We learned back in my psychology class that babies prefer to look at attractive people and that young kids prefer to be taught by attractive teachers over unattractive ones. We even watched a video of an experiment where a beautiful woman with almost no experience in a field repeatedly got hired at jobs she applied at, while a less attractive woman with much more experience and credentials was turned down each time. Even without thinking about it, human beings constantly judge what they see.

You mean you Fluffy?

Honestly, we're beating a dead horse at this point. It doesn't take long paragraphs and scientific studies to prove that unless you're the female Einstein people are going to like the pretty people better than you. . . Hell, even if you are the female Einstein people are going to like an attractive woman more than you. Fair? No. It isn't. But, hell, it's a dead horse.

Someone should just make a thread about it.

Gunneh, take a chill pill and go post in our role play. :: hugs :: Debating about appearance is actually contributing to this thread. This thread is about showing ourselves, so I don’t see why we shouldn’t be allowed to talk about physical things on top of it.

Xasthom, I like that first picture. You look like a total sweetheart, and I love your shirt. I will say that I do think you look better with dark hair. Not so much the black of the second picture of your second post, but the dark brown in the last picture. You also look better when you’re not downing a bottle of alcohol.

Inerio, hrm… I didn’t notice that until I looked a bit hard, but now I see that ring. I don’t think that happens to me, but I have lighter coloured eyes, so it may not be as obvious. It could just be that the quality of the pictures isn’t very crisp, so that ring is just a bit of blur or something. It could also be the lighting, regardless of the fact that the light source was in a different position. The facts are that the best lighting you can get is sunshine with a few clouds in the sky. You’ll never get as good a picture with false light.

You’re right. Someone should make a thread about the debate. Go make it! XD

ACK!, it’s a natural inclination as a human being to want to look good. Different societies and different cultures just have different ways of going about it. In some African tribes, elongating the neck with rings or putting a plate in a hole in the lower lip is a sign of beauty. In the Middle East, women get nose jobs to perfect their faces. In many countries, all kinds of plastic surgery is necessary for people to feel beautiful enough.

As a human being, I feel more beautiful if I do something with myself. I’m not ugly without make-up, but I feel more attractive when I wear eyeliner, eyeshadow, and clear mascara. I have terrible acne, but I don’t wear make-up to cover that up because I’m not worried about it unless it’s a photograph. I feel more beautiful when my hair is brushed than when it’s tangled. I feel more beautiful in clothes that aren’t frumpy looking. I don’t shop for expensive clothing or make-up. I don’t even really know how to style my hair.

I also don’t wear make-up when I’m at home. I don’t feel the need to wear make-up even when I go to work, but I feel better when I do. Hell, when my boyfriend visited me for a week, I wore make-up to greet him, but I didn’t reapply it, and I didn’t have to reapply it again until we were going to go into town. Part of my thinking was that it would be nice for him to have someone on his arm that looks beautiful and respectable. He could have cared less, but it was one way for me to show that I care about him by caring about myself.

Also, there are ways to make ugly people beautiful, and if that helps their self-esteem, what’s wrong with that? Just because make-up makes you feel worse about yourself doesn’t mean it does the same thing to other people.

Inerio I love your new setup! Makes me think of cotton candy, and I love me some cotton candy. Of course that doesn't entirely mean I'd like to eat you...or your hair...but...er...

Yeah. Lovely! Wink
