Happy Halloween 2011! Empty Happy Halloween 2011!

Post by Fate Flyer Sun Oct 09, 2011 8:51 pm

It's October, and you know what that means -- Halloween! How are you going to celebrate? If you're dressing up this year for a party, going out to the bars, handing out candy, taking kids trick-or-treating, or just for the heck of it, what are you going to be? (You should definitely post pictures in the photos thread!) Anyone carving pumpkins? What about watching scary movies? Or going haunted housing?

Axiom likes to refer to me as the Halloween nazi lol (a play off of Isabel Evans in the TV series Roswell, who was referred to as the Christmas nazi). I am a bit of a fanatic about Halloween, but he really loves it too. When we get our own house someday, we already have plans on decorating for Halloween and being "the cool house" for kids to go to for lots of candy. Smile

We are dressing up as Egyptians this Halloween. We ordered our costumes online last month, and I can't wait to wear mine! I'm a big lover of ancient Egypt. I actually, truth be told, had planned on being an Egyptian this Halloween for many months now. I started ordering jewelry to wear for my costume back in the beginning of the year haha. (I was already thinking ahead and looking forward to it.) I'm pretty excited.

Axiom and I went to a haunted house the first weekend of October, and it was pretty awesome. They had a giant animatronic monster at the end that I remembered from the previous year and loved. We also have plans to go to this really cool looking haunted corn maze the weekend of the 22nd with one of my friends from back in school. I wanted to go to more than just 2 haunted houses this year, but since we're moving this coming weekend, we have a lot of expenses that are kind of more of a priority. (We actually just had to go and buy ourselves a microwave today.)

We've been watching a few scary movies lately too. I gave Axiom a Halloween card early, and he gave me the cult-hit movie Trick-or-Treat on Blu Ray, so we're watching that right now. (He also ordered the entire Alien series on Blu Ray, so I can't wait for that.) If you haven't seen Trick-or-Treat, I highly recommend it. It has a lot of surprises in it that you don't expect. It's my favorite Halloween-related movie.

After we move, we're also going to be getting a pumpkin. We probably aren't going to carve it though, just because it's too time-consuming (and with the move we need to get settled in and whatnot). But I do want to make pumpkin seeds, as I LOVE those. Mmm, the goop is the best part haha.

Well, I hope everyone has a fantastic Halloween this year and has lots of fun!!! Very Happy

Post by Guest Mon Oct 10, 2011 9:50 am

I don't think I will be dressing up this year. I really just don't have any ideas, and I'm not interested in going with a generic store-bought costume. Oh well. I am hoping that the family will have Halloween and mine and Ryona's house, since it would be the first year and her parents are getting tired of hosting it at their own house. I am looking forward to decorating the yard and hopefully scaring the numerous little kids that roam the neighborhood.

I am also considering the possibility of Halloween baking... I am not much of a cook, but I'm learning. And all of those cookies and brownies and cakes I'm seeing at work are really looking delicious...

That's too bad, Silvone, but hopefully you end up having Halloween at your and Ryona's place. Wink Decorating for Halloween can be lots of fun. I envy you and your home-owners status! It'll be fun too to see all the little kids come by for trick-or-treating. Since you prefer costumes that aren't bought, do you have someone that typically makes your costumes? If so, consider me extremely envious!

I'm not much of a cook or baker either hehe, but who can resist Halloween treats? I think you should make some sweets!

Happy Halloween 2011! Empty Re: Happy Halloween 2011!

Post by Gadreille Mon Oct 10, 2011 8:50 pm

I love Halloween, and I'm super excited to have a house to host, but this year is just not the year to do it. Unfortunately, having a house = having all of your money sucked out of your bank, lol. Eventually, I'd love to have a Nightmare Before Christmas display that goes up on Halloween and lasts until Christmas, getting slightly more christmas-y toward the end. But that is a looong way coming. This year, we are just going to borrow my parents decorations and decorate our house, put a projector in the garage and play a scary movie while handing out candy. Hopefully we'll get to carve a pumpkin, but I am admittedly not very good at it. I'd like to try to do one with a cat on it this year, in memory of Spooky.

Theoden is going to be a green monster (he picked it out himself) so I decided to be his "mummy" XD I encouraged Silvone to dress up as a Ghostbuster as Theoden loves that movie, but it's really hard to drop 60 bucks on a costume right now.

Halloween should be fun regardless, even if it is a Monday night. I'm celebrating already by wearing my black cat shirts (I have a bunch that I've collected inspired by my beloved black kitty who I just lost this year). Speaking of that...this will be the first Halloween without her, and the first Halloween not at my parents house. Ch-ch-ch-ch-changes! *tear*

Fate, I was an egyptian goddess (bastet) for Halloween a few years ago. It was really fun! I'm excited to see what your costume looks like. Did you choose to portray a certain person/goddess or just a general egyptian? I guess that being a mummy this year is somewhat on the "egyptian" theme, lol.

Oh, and I'm looking forward to those treats, Silvone!!! Smile

My mom used to make my costumes when I was younger; she loved making costumes from scratch. And my grandma is really good at sewing. Recently, I just use things I have to put something together, or buy something that isn't actually a costume in a bag.

Last year I bought a pair of blue workers' coveralls and taped the number 101 on the back, with some yellow tape down the front center. A couple of belts and voila! Vault 101 outfit.

The year before, I think, I put together a pirate costume with some costume things and some stuff that we already had as standard clothing. And another year I just used a huge black leather trench-coat I had and did some random stuff... I was a mix of a mafia guy and a terminator Terminator

Well Happy Halloween to all my FoG'ers!!

Halloween is my favorite holiday as well. I always celebrate it. It has even gotten better now that I have nieces who love it too. It is fun to see their faces when they put on their costumes, and get to go door to door getting candy.

This year I have no ideas what I will be. I might just fall back and put on my Sith Master costume...

Happy Halloween 2011! Empty Re: Happy Halloween 2011!

Post by Dreamless Days Tue Oct 11, 2011 4:25 am

Halloween is an American tradition, but over the years I have seen it start to be taken in more and more here in Australia. When I was a kid, it was strange to see a single kid "trick or treating", but nowadays a lot has changed, we get plenty of people coming to our door asking for candy. Luckily, we always prepare just in case kids come, so we're appropriately stocked every year.

However, I was too old to ever go trick or treating, instead, my friends and I get together every Halloween and throw a party. Half because we love an excuse to party and half because our buddy's birthday is the 29th of October, so we do a dual party kinda thing. Generally we make it a "costume party", but we don't go for a TON of effort. This year I don't plan on a costume at all, instead I am making preparations for the 2012 Zombie Walk. Odds are I will probably combine the Zombie Walk "costume" with my halloween one. A Jason Vorhees hockey mask, flesh wounds running up my arm, and a giant 6 foot sword wrapped in "bloody" bandages to replace the machete.

October for me though is more like Scary Movie Month. I honor the Halloween tradition by watching all my beloved Horror Flicks at a higher rate that usual in this month. So far I've been through Friday the 13th (my all time favorite series, Jason is my hero.), A Nightmare on Elm Street (Including the remakes for both series), Scream, Final Destination, Triangle (An amazing time travel related plot line in a horror sense.), Paranormal Activity (wanna see #3 in theaters...) and many others.

However, other than the horror flicks and the big party we throw at the end of the month, I have NO plans for halloween. Razz

Not at Halloween though, unfortunately. Had to give the costume back to Leu-Mas Drof.
It was awesome; someone had custom-made the cloak for him. It's quite substantial!
The rest of it is an Obi-Wan costume with some improvisations added myself. ^_^

Whoo! I'm so glad that I'm not the only one totally enamored with Halloween. It's my favorite holiday. If I could only have one holiday a year for the rest of my life, Halloween would totally win - even over my birthday and Christmas.

This year, Misery and I are going as a devil ((him)) and a fallen angel ((me)). Unfortunately, I had to do a preorder for my costume, so I'm just hoping it gets here on time. =\

I've already celebrated a little by going to two different haunted attractions this year. The first one we went to kind of sucked. It's called the Haunted Forest, and it just... left something to be desired. The second one, Nightmare on 13th, was pretty awesome, though. Misery and I agreed that I should stand in front because I feel too protected when I let him go first to be afraid of anything. Totally worked. =3

That is beyond awesome, Kalon! Very Happy Too bad you couldn't keep it. Also, I agree -- we need pictures from Marcus!

I'm looking forward to seeing costumes in the Pictures thread soon! Axiom and I were supposed to go to a Halloween party, but evidently that got cancelled, so we were trying to organize our own, but no one seemed interested, so now we're trying to figure out something to do. I'm wearing my costume, dammit!

Well, we've decided on having Halloween at our house (Silvone and My) this year. We even got two decorations to celebrate our first halloween in our new home. One is a sign on the door that says "Keep Out" (our porch is tiny, so we want to hand out candy outside of our garage). The other is an 8-12 foot mural that depicts a haunted butcher shop...I'm thinking this halloween is going to be very awesome Wink

Happy Halloween 2011! Empty Re: Happy Halloween 2011!

Post by Kathryn Lacey Sat Oct 29, 2011 8:40 pm

Fate, great minds think alike, I guess. I just have to wait until he and I both have a day off, so it probably won't happen until Saturday since that's usually the day I get off work with him. It just gets dark too soon here for it to happen on a weekday.

Ryona, that's sounds freaking awesome! I'm bigger on dressing myself up than my house, but that's mostly because I never really know what to do to the house without it looking campy and cheesy. Like... I don't want happy pumpkins and ghosts. I want things that will make small children quiver, and the candy will be their reward for braving it!

Things like when I was little, and if little kids went up to the house, people in black robes would sweep out like phantoms come to claim one's soul. That house made me cry. It was beautiful. ^^_^^

I think that your decor sounds great, though! Be sure to get pictures! I want to see them. I love looking at your pictures.

Happy Halloween, Charlie!

Ugh... My costume hasn't come yet. In fact, it was never even sent. :: sighs :: I'm going to cancel my payment if I can figure out how because I found a different costume. I'm still going as a fallen angel, but the colours match my love's costume better. Unfortunately, I couldn't find any feathered wings ((not even white ones though I wouldn't have gone with those even if that's all that existed)). However, the costume I got comes with a pair of sort of demony wings which could theoretically work with fallen angels.

This is the costume. It's called a vampire fairy, but I think that's stupid. The costume in the bag is a little different from the one in that picture ((which is the same as what was on the bag)). First, the breast covering doesn't look like that. It's red, and it isn't see-through or polka dotted. It's red like the bodice with a hint of ruffles around the top. It also wouldn't cover anything bigger than an A-cup, so I have to wear my camisole with it. It also didn't come with a petticoat like in the picture, and if one pretty much moves, they're bearing it all, so I got a nice, long petticoat that almost reaches my knees.

I also bought a pair of fishnets which I'll wear with the heels I bought for my sister's wedding., and I won't be wearing the headband.

Post by Kathryn Lacey Sun Oct 30, 2011 12:22 am

That's really depressing, Marc! I have to work on Monday, too, so I won't be able to even take pictures, but that is not going to stop me from handing out candy.

Anyway, today, I asked what day trick-or-treat night is. Surprisingly, it's actually on Halloween. Fairfield never did that, so I was like... super shocked. Anyway, we were chatting, and he was like, "Yeah. Then you get those eighteen year olds coming to your door and you think, 'I don't think you should get candy.'" I went trick-or-treating almost every year of my life until I stopped being a teenager. Nineteen years old was my last time... People always said they loved my costumes and such, soooo... yeah... I wonder if they were secretly like, "WTF is this almost-adult doing trick-or-treating?"

Well, I don't care how old someone is. If a century old person came to my door trick-or-treating, I would give her/him candy as long as they were wearing a costume. No costume, no candy. Age does not apply. That's my rule. =3

Happy Halloween 2011! Empty Re: Happy Halloween 2011!

Post by Fate Flyer Mon Oct 31, 2011 8:09 am

Aww, that really is too bad, Marcus. Maybe next year?

Hmm, you know, I agree, Kathryn. As long as people can be respectful (ie. not smashing pumpkins or taking too much candy or stealing other people's candy), then you should be able to trick-or-treat until whenever you like. If someone my age came to my door trick-or-treating, I wouldn't refuse them candy!

Well, this Halloween turned out to be a MAJOR bust for Axiom and I. Everything that could possibly go wrong Halloween-related did. Here's the breakdown...

First of all, no one (not my friends or Axiom's) seemed to want to do anything for Halloween. No parties, no dressing up, no going out, nothing. I was going to just have us put on our costumes to take pictures, but Axiom thought it wasn't really worth it, since we should just save them for next year.

Well, we tried to make the best of the situation. So, we got ourselves a pumpkin. Axiom carved it into an awesome scary face, and it was my job to bake the pumpkin seeds. Sounds simple enough on both parts, right?

So, the oven just finished preheating, and I have my pumpkin seeds all ready to go in with the Worcestershire sauce and some salt on them. I open up the oven, and oh-my-gosh, there's paper inside! I freaked out, because I thought it was going to catch fire at any moment, especially now being exposed to oxygen, but thank goodness they didn't. They just got browned. So, I pulled those out, got really pissed off because whoever installed our new oven didn't remember to take the paperwork out of it, but then as I was looking over the paperwork, I saw it wasn't even papers from the oven! It was paperwork from our new washer and dryer! WTF? Someone evidently decided that the oven was a great place to store the directions on how to use a washer and dryer. Seriously! I was so mad.

Now, on Axiom's side -- the pumpkin. He finished carving it and put a candle inside, and he set it up on our garbage can outside, since he didn't want to just put in on the ground because of the millions (probably not much of an overstatement lol) of squirrels we have here, since squirrels I guess like to eat pumpkin. So, it sat there for about an hour, and him and I are watching TV, and we hear this crashing sound. I immediately guessed it was the pumpkin falling. And it was. The pumpkin somehow fell off the garbage, even though Axiom tested it to make sure it was fine and wouldn't roll, and it smashed on the cement of our patio. Axiom was really disappointed about that, and so was I.

Well, as if that weren't enough, there's more. People at my work wanted to have a Halloween treat day today, so we were all going to make Halloween-related treats to bring in to work. Axiom and I went to this haunted house towards the beginning of the month which had food and drinks in this little hut area once you exit the haunted house, and we had these awesome eyeball-shaped Oreo balls, so we decided we wanted to make those together for my work. Well, those turned out miserably. It was incredibly hard to make, and none of them were shaped very well, and on top of that, we used food coloring for the irises of the eyes, and food coloring sitting on top of white chocolate (which coats the Oreo balls) does not stay. When you eat them, it gets all over your face and hands, and it's ridiculously hard to get out! I had blue all over my lips and teeth for awhile yesterday.

So, as an alternative for my coworkers, I bought brownies, cut off the top corners to shape them like headstones, and then using frosting, wrote RIP on them. Simple enough, but they don't really look a thing like headstones. Ugh.

What a Halloween! I really hope next year makes up for all this.

Post by Gadreille Mon Oct 31, 2011 11:49 am

Wow! That really sucks, Fate. It sounds like a few Halloweens I've been through.

Edit: Maybe tonight will be better! (I meant to write that forever ago, dunno what happened)

Our biggest disappointment this year (so far) is that at our house, there is a lamp post across the street, so it is not nearly as dark as when we are at my mom's house. But my mom and dad are getting to be grouches about the holidays, so we brought it over here.

My mom and I were in the car, and she said "I didn't really want to do anything this year." I mean, I already took the mantle, but that's not enough?

So I said "Well, you don't have to come over." Then she tried to turn it into me disinviting her, which isn't true. I don't know what she expected me to say. I don't know why she thinks it's such a crime to want everyone together on the holidays.

Anyway, the yard is decked, Theoden and I have been celebrating by watching kid friendly Halloween movies, and two out of the three pumpkins we got tromping through the pumpkin patch are carved. Now we're just hanging out til this evening! I'll post pictures up tonight or tomorrow.

Fate, that seriously blows. I'm so sorry that everything seemed to go wrong. Have you at least gone to haunted houses or anything? Just because you two wear your costumes for one photoshoot, it doesn't mean you can reuse them next year, too! You should tell Axiom that!

Ryona, I'm really excited to see your house decor and the costumes and such. I'm sorry that things aren't perfect, but at least they aren't awful, yes?

Silvan, don't feel bad about having a wonderful Halloween. It's the best holiday ever, and it's not a crime to have it be a blast!

So, I took some pictures. Because I had to work until 6pm, it was sort of dark when they were taken, and because kids are trick-or-treating, it was awkward for me to take pictures of myself in front of them when they're coming to my house for candy, so they're not amazing, but they're okay.

Also, WTF! I fully support trick-or-treating, but there's no reason to be greedy. If anyone told me, "You can take as many pieces as you like." I took three at the MOST. I did not take such huge-ass handfuls that the bucket was almost fully depleted.

I've learned my lesson, and when kids ask how many they can take, they're told they can have one. If they don't ask, they can go for several because they'd probably be like me and take one to three pieces, not as many as they can possible grasp. Sort of a twisted game, but the ones who ask are the ones who are likely to make it so that the late trick-or-treaters don't get anything, soooo I figure it's fair enough. Jesus... This just reminds me why I don't like children. XD

Happy Halloween 2011! Empty Re: Happy Halloween 2011!

Post by Dreamless Days Mon Oct 31, 2011 10:16 pm

My Halloween experience this year was pretty good from the standpoint of "It's an American tradition". I went to a kickass Halloween party, where I spent the most of it chatting up a "Naughty Nurse" and "Cowgirl" (Same person, different costume.). My improvised costume (I heard that you needed one like, four hours before the party) came out really well, since it was just a quick getup with things to distract from my overall LACK of an actual costume (Using my Rosary Beads, Rave Goggles and 5'3 Buster Sword to draw attention away from myself, haha. I was able to convince people I was a Video Game Main Character. XD). The whole party ended with me becoming the champ of the impromptu pool tournament we started when the party started dying down.

Then yesterday I invited my friends around to my place to watch horror movies all night in honor of the holiday. We dubbed the night "The Screamathon". Had some really good choices in the lineup, including Halloween, Nightmare on Elm Street, Friday the 13th and Scream. We had a few people nervous to go outside after it got dark due to the atmosphere we had going. However the whole scary feel was shattered after a couple of drinks due to our lovely nature of deconstructing horror movies for our own personal entertainment. Overall though, amazing weekend. ^_^

Sounds fun, Dreamless! I don't do horror movies at all, so I would have been one of the few scared to go outside, haha! But I'm glad you all had fun!

Anyway, I posted costume pics in the Post Yo' Picture thread if anyone's interested!

Ryona -- It's strange your mom got so defensive about the whole Halloween party situation. At least you, Silvone, and Theoden can celebrate in your own fun way. Smile It sounds like it was really nice! I'm excited to see some pictures. ^_^

Silvan -- I didn't mean to instill so much empathy to the point of causing you to feel guilty for having such a good time, hon! I'm glad you were able to! Very Happy Kathryn's right - Halloween is awesome, so it's wonderful you and your boyfriend had a nice time! Oooh, these upcoming pictures sound awesome. Oh, wait, they're in the photos thread now! Must comment soon!

Kathryn -- Yeah, it wasn't at all ideal for me, especially since I love Halloween so much. But, what can you do? We tried. No one seemed motivated enough to throw a party or even go out anywhere, so we tried hosting one at our new place (Lord knows I have enough decorations here), but still people weren't interested.

Well, I think Axiom thought it'd be weird if we just put on costumes and took pictures, because then people would be like, "Oh, so what'd you do for Halloween?" And we'd be like, "Nothing... Just took pictures." :/ XD

That's too bad that you weren't able to take as good of pictures as you were hoping. I know what you mean though. It's awkward trying to take pictures with others watching! At least you were able to take some though. I'm really looking forward to seeing your and Jonathan's outfits!

That is really rude when kids take too much candy. It's like their parents don't teach them to be polite and gracious. I don't even remember now how much I took as a kid, but it couldn't have been any more than 3, like you said. I hope to raise my future kid(s) better!

Dreamless Days -- Wow, that sounds like a blast! Just the way you were able to articulate your Halloween experience as well makes it even better. So what of this "Naughty Nurse/Cowgirl?" Did you and her hit it off? Smile

Silvan, great costumes! Looks like you guys had fun!

Kathryn, I can't wait to see your pictures!

Fate, that really sucks that you couldn't get people at your house. I forsee that happening to me when my brothers go to college. I don't know many people who celebrate Halloween the way I do.

Dreamless, sounds like you had fun!

OK, so the days leading up to Halloween I celebrated by watching Corpse Bride, The Nightmare Before Christmas, Scooby Doo and the Witches Ghost, and The Mummy (As I was a mummy for halloween). I couldn't watch anything scarier than that as I always had Taeo with me, but he enjoyed all of the movies that we watched, which made me happy.

Sunday my family came over and we decorated the house, and we took Theoden to the pumpkin patch. He picked this pumpkin:

Pumpkin pic 2

We carved two out of the three pumpkins:

Jack and Oogie

Here are our costumes:

Vampire, Mummy and Werewolf

Gladiator

Green Monster

And here are the decorations:

Butcher Wall

Opposite Wall

Jack O' Lanterns

The Door

Front of House

We got some pizza and drinks and enjoyed hanging out in the garage, handing out candy and just spending time together. Two of my good friends came over, plus my family. The greatest disappointment was the lack of kids. We had less than half of the traffic we usually get at my parents house. This was surprising considering that we are less than a block from an elementary school.

Also, we didn't really do that intense of decoration, and instead of scary sound effects I made a mild soundtrack that starts with silly party songs and ends with slightly scarier music. Some kids would NOT ENTER THE DRIVEWAY even when monster mash was playing. The haunted house thing is new to this neighborhood, apparently. We got in a few good scares, did not give away nearly enough of the giant cauldron of candy, and called it a night at about 9:30. We went in and watched part of 28 Days Later before my friends and family finally went home around 10:30 or so.

All in all, I'd say it was a good Halloween, and I hope to start something in this new neighborhood. In the end, this year, MORE CANDY FOR US! Very Happy

WOW, Ryona! I love all the decorations on the house, especially the Jack O' Lanterns! It looks like you put a lot of work into it! And don't get too discouraged about the lack of kids. Like you said, it's a new neighborhood, so the other people probably just don't know you all yet. I'll bet in a year or two your place will be the most rockin' Halloween house on the black!

I LOVE your costumes, and Taeo is just adorable!
