I am reading “The Giver" by Lois Lowry. That’s the best book I have ever read. I highly recommend it.

I do really love that book. I've tried to get Ryona to read it, but she won't. I do think that author has greatly influenced my style of writing, which probably isn't good Very Happy

It's not that I wont! I'm waiting to read it when Theoden reads it in school, or right before. It's on my "special books" list.

The Giver is a fantastic book. =D Never got around to its sequel though...

Took back out Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Vortex. The library was hiding it on me, but I proved superior and found it anyway. Trying to finish it by the end of the month.

House of Leaves by Mark Z. Danielweski.

I don't get it, but I certainly do like it. It's a great advanced read if anyone is looking for some college-level reading. The book in general is such a mindfuck that you have to reread some paragraphs twice to grasp what just happened.

I just finished The Wheel of Time book 7, and I have to finish the first section of The Road by tonight for the book club on Fog. I can't wait to start book 8 for WOT... I'm really liking it right now.

A Supposedly Fun Thing I'll Never Do Again, by David Foster Wallace

A collection of his essays. I absolutely love this guy. My favorite is "E Unibus Pluram: Television and U.S. Fiction" talking about the nature of television and it's effect on contemporary fiction. I like not only his witty observations but the fact that he acknowledges the good and bad things about television without demonizing it.

For some reason I am trying to conquer both Star Wars: Fate of the Jedi: Conviction and The Wheel of Time: Winter's Heart at the same time. Star Wars should go by quickly though.

Sweet. Very Happy Fate of the Jedi is what I'm currently on right now. I currently am on the first of the series but am nearly done with that book. I only ever read at work lol. I'm really excited to see how all this plays out and whether or not Luke and Ben can determine where along the line Jacen was corrupted.

Is it just me, Silvone, or do you enjoy reading about Allana/Amelia too? I loved reading about Jacen, Jaina, Lowbacca, and Tenal Ka back when they were children (perhaps because I got to see them both as kids and then as adults), and now I really like reading about Jacen and Tenal Ka's daughter and her little adventures. I hope that they write more books that take place even after Fate of the Jedi in terms of the timeline so I can read more about the current characters (like Ben and Jaina) along with Allana.

I try not to get too attached to characters because they always kill them off Sad

I didn't read anything before the New Jedi Order series, but during that I did like reading about the solo kids. My favorite, unfortunately, was Anakin. I couldn't stand Jacen until he was older, and once I started to like his character...well...then they made him even better I suppose.

I did not really have an affinity for Ben until the Fate of the Jedi series, but I do like reading about Allana. Perhaps because I've always wanted a daugher... I don't know. From what Fate of the Jedi shows though... I have high hopes for her character Smile

I just finished reading such a pretty face, by Cathy Lamb.

"As achingly honest as it is witty, Such a Pretty Face is a richly insightful novel of one woman's search for love, family, and acceptance, of the pain we all carry - and the wonders that can happen when we let it go at last."

It is an amazing, fantastic novel.

I don't think I've ever been so moved by a book. I recommend it to absolutely everyone.

What Are You Reading? - Page 10 Empty Re: What Are You Reading?

Post by Guest Wed Jul 20, 2011 10:45 pm

I am currently reading The Minervan Experiment by James P. Hogan. It is really a trilogy containing the books Inherit The Stars, The Gentle Giants of Ganymede, and Giant's Star. I am currently on Giant's Star. There are also two more novels afterward that I just found out about.

I have to say that this series is turning out to be one of my all-time favorites. I would say it is a MUST READ for any science fiction fan. While it is a bit outdated (the first book written at about 1971 I think), it is still quite accurate as far as I can tell. But I am no scientist.

There are just so many things about this book that make it a staple of science fiction reading. What is sad about it is the fact that I have never heard about it, or even seen it in a book store. I believe that is because the last two books (which I have not read) did not turn out so well. But I tend not to follow public opinion, so I will save judgement until after I have read them myself.

James P. Hogan, Inherit The Stars. Pick it up, and I will bet you won't be able to resist continuing the series.

Post by Lara Mon Aug 15, 2011 8:58 pm

Attempt #4 at getting through The Naming has begun as of last week.

I'm not sure what it is about this book that I can't get through. It's not the plotline; every time I see this book in a bookstore or library, I forget the fact that I've seen it before and really like the concept on the back of the book. It's not the characters; I'm actually a fan of all the characters I've met so far. It's not the author's writing style...I think.

Whatever the reason, despite my fascination with the series (I finally own all four books) I have yet to get through book 1...Though as stated above, I'm trying again.

I'm going to read this book series if it kills me. /stubborn.

Cheers, Tacoz; the Johannes Cabal books are two of the most enjoyable books I've read in a while.

I've finally--FINALLY--cracked open A Game of Thrones, and I'm digging it so far. Generally speaking, high fantasy isn't my thing, but the book moves a lot quicker than I thought, and I should finish it within a week or so.

Next on deck will either be Yahtzee Croshaw's Mogworld or Cherie Priest's Clementine. We'll see what all this incest, attempted infanticide, and "srs bsns" leave me in the mood for.

At any rate, I just finished The White Luck Warrior by R. Scott Bakker, the latest in the absurdly dark but beautifully executed Prince of Nothing series. Next up should be the A Dance With Dragons.
