Initial Character Background Info:

To start this story, all our characters will among the 1,560 survivors of the Aurora Heres. As a general rule for this story, you may have as many characters as you like.

Nobody needed much of a motive to sign on. Earth was dying, the end of it's resources in sight. It'd be another generation, maybe two still, but people get desperate. There were no security points, no background checks for passengers; there wasn't much worry about terrorists, seeing as how they'd all be frozen the whole trip. Tickets were available for every country - though the project itself was a joint operation of the U.N., NASA, several countries, and a few wealthy private contributors.

The only limitations on your background are that you must be from earth, and have had access to enough money for the ticket. Which, due to protests against the "classist" project directors (some of which turned violent), the price of the ticket was dropped such that a two years' savings of minimum wage would pay for it. Though this drastically cut the budget for the vessel's construction, no corners could be cut. After all, the fate of 1,816 people depended on the Aurora Heres' fusion plant and engines lasting the years it would take to get to "Prodemia" - at the time simply known as the "beta site". The sleeper ship's fate might well have been the fate of humanity; it was unlikely another sleeper ship would be built.

All the newly-slated colonists were told essentials would be provided for them upon arrival. However, a limited amount of personal possessions were allowed: the items were required to non-perishable, packed in bags or containers which would fit in a 2.5' x 2.5' x 4' space. Less than you'd be allowed to take for carry-on items on a plane. All such baggage would be screened for explosive devices or unlicensed weaponry.

(Note: if you have a clean history you could feasibly take knives and/or pistols aboard - larger weapons would only be licensed to military, police, or otherwise specially trained servicemen.)

Passengers would then be allowed to vote in a governor who would take office over the colony soon as it was established, and finally, be put into stasis and locked in a safe-house to await the Aurora Heres' completion.

Earth's technology would still look rather like what we have today, or what we're projected to have in the next 70-100 years - cryogenic stasis and fusion power / propulsion being the most monumental breakthroughs. Projections of fusion power plant installation were unlikely to do anything more than delay the inevitable depletion of earth's fossil fuels.

Personal, handheld computers would be commonplace, and designed to connect wirelessly with less-portable terminals consisting of keyboard and monitor (or other interface & display devices) - these being available in public areas as well as for installation in private homes.

Feel free to extrapolate any technology your character might have among his/her personal items, just be reasonable.

There will be ample opportunity to add new characters at many points in the story - not all of which have to be human. Sentient alien species will be available for anyone who may wish to play them; as we encounter species of my creation, if any interest you, you need only ask. If you have a species of your own you wish to join with, run them by me first and I'll let you know when you might get the opportunity.

Former Occupation: Military Police Captain

Description: Carlos is a well built man at the age of 35. Strong, 6'1, short cropped hair and nicely shaven face simply scream military man, even if he isn't technically in the military. A few scars and scratches mar the surface of his skin, but nothing that can't be easily hidden. His dark brown eyes and hair match well with his slightly tanned skin, and fit well within the context of the rest of his body. Well proportioned for a man of his height and weight, exactly 189 lbs, he is someone that can't be stared down easily, nor pushed over.

Attire: Since the planet they are going to will have no real law enforcement, Carlos decided against the whole uniform of the MP's, deciding to keep the red berret and having a badge to pin to his shirt instead. He likes to wear light T-shirts; white, tan, yellow, any colour close to these. He also chooses to wear black jeans with as few pockets as possible. He can also be seen wearing a shotgun brandolier as well as a belt complete with clips, a radio, and his 9mm pistol. Other than this, he wears some home made dog tags around his neck at all times, often over top of his T, a silver watch that probably cost him three months pay, and a pair of simple black reflective sunglasses.

Background Notes: Carlos is a kind and extremely patient man. He is not one to make rash decisions with considering the consequences, and prefers to think that everyone he sees is under his protection. Calm and collected, Carlos often takes it upon himself to do the hardest jobs to save the others from having to do it, and can always be found whenever someone needs to talk to someone else. He's been under fire before, and knows how to keep his head in situations like those, as well as those from behind a desk. That being said, if he thinks you are on the wrong side, you will have a hard time convincing him otherwise. He is rational, but almost a little too overprotective, and can be extremely guilt-racked at times. However, he never lets those show too much outside where people can see him, and as a true leader does, never lets people below him see just how much he is hurting when he makes the hard choices.

Description: Tall and thin, Hawke is anything but weak. 15 years old, 5'8" and still growing, born to an ornithologist and a linguist, thus his oddly bird-centric name, Hawke spent most of his elementary school being ridiculed for being weak and book smart. Through high school, what he attended of it before the launch, Hawke trained, turning his gangly limbs into lean, muscle filled ones through his dedication to the swim team. The majority of his life was spent in school, though he did have a fascination with the stars and everything science fiction related.

Attire: A sci-fi graphic tee and black jeans. Tends towards a more casual look, as well as older cloths that he doesn't care if they get ruined or not. Wears one of a few necklaces.

Possessions: A small, handheld computer (which doubles as a MP3 player), headphones, three necklaces (a small, iron feather on a leather cord, a short, chain-mail necklace, and a steel wolf read with ruby eyes on a leather cord), extra clothes, a cordless, solar charger (for the computer and gaming device) and a portable gaming system, along with games. Pencils and a few sketchbooks. Digital camera.

Background Notes: His parents were both killed by the comet which destroyed Cryo Bay D, leaving him an orphan. He survived in Cryo Bay B. Would have continued high school if he had not boarded the ship with his parents.

Description: Santos is a sturdy man, particularly, for his age of forty-two, standing just over five feet nine inches with a thick build of one-hundred ninety-six pounds. His dark hair is buzzed close to his scalp, face covered in a short and well trimmed circle-goatee, the rest of his jaw specked with short stubble. Santos bears the scars of his youth on the front lines, many of them hidden behind his clothing of choice, though a couple show vividly on his face.

Attire: Slate grey cargo pants, combat boots, matte black t-shirt, dark green surplus jacket and a medium-tan military cap

Background Notes: With the crisis the world was facing a hole, Santos made the decision to step away from the battlefield to approach the situation through diplomatic processions. His time as a Politian, however, was short lived as his idea of how to prevent the collapse of the earth as a whole was far from a well liked route. A strong supporter of a singular global and military-run government was taken by most as an option seemingly worse than losing everything. After only three years he backed out of the political game and took solace, as much as he could, by returning to the military until boarding the ship. Throughout his career with the Venezuelan Army, Santos was known for his bold, high risk maneuvers and his ruthlessness. For Santos, the unthinkably inhumane or otherwise ‘anti-human rights’ actions would be well justified if it meant the preservation of his comrades and, furthermore, his country and later, humanity itself.

Description: At 57, Dravis' otherwise chestnut hair has its share of white at the temples. He is a wiry, pale man. Though soft-spoken, his dark eyes betray how thoroughly he studies anything that piques his interest - and how quickly he dismisses everything else.

Attire: Black dress pants, a maroon button-down shirt, and unpolished black shoes. Optionally, he has a black leather jacket and beret.

Possessions: A basic reading / writing computer pad and a slew of notebooks and digital files.

Background Notes: There is little to Dr. Radic apart from his work. All fields of science interest him to a degree, though he is a physicist at heart. Little supersedes his passion for advancing the frontier of knowledge, of human understanding of the universe.

Attire: William wears a traditional suit, with only one change to it: he wears a tweed vest.

Possessions: Portable computer, pistol, ammunition, various history, political and astronomical treaties and encyclopedias, more suits and a pipe with tobacco.

Background Notes: William Laurier first graduated as a lawyer and practiced law for all but 3 years before getting elected for the first time in the Canadian House of Commons. From there, he spent 30 years as sometimes an MP, sometimes a Minister (including Minister of Foreign Affairs, Agriculture, Northern Affairs, Defense and Transportation).

However, during this time he also pursued other interests such as archeology and astronomy. Because of this, he also had very close ties with the Canadian Space Agency and was a strong supporter of it and its projects. As the time of earth started to wear out its resources and plans were made for a massive emigration, William spearheaded Canada’s position in pushing for greater integration of the world’s space agencies and making the ship itself more accessible to lower income families.

In return for his support of the CSA, NASA and the UN (and other brown envelopes >.>) William was given an early ticket off Earth…

Everyone can go ahead and introduce your characters by having them register. Go ahead and write the clerks too - try to keep them professional. Decide what kind of work your character will have - virtually everything needs doing. PM (or otherwise contact) me if you have questions or need ideas as to what the clerks might suggest.

After you register: you're free to commune in the cafeteria and/or explore the colony and basically do as you wish. Your apartments won't be anything special and for the most part, other than the Com Cen the buildings will be noticeably more rugged in design; functional rather than aesthetic. I.e. not so many fancy desks with inlaid screens.

@ Mel & Dax: I could see your characters being offered positions with Colony Administration, though other labor would be open to them if they prefer.

@ Wolf: I'll have a word with you via PM for you about details for your post.
