Rue came to St. Nicholas orphanage as an awkward, painfully shy twelve year-old with no name, no past and a speech impediment. Mrs. Amelia Grenfeld, director of the orphanage tried to break her of both her shyness and stuttering by forcing her to sing or make a speech in front of everyone in the cafeteria at every meal time. The experiences were painful, humiliating at first, but within two years, she'd outgrown the lisp, worked past her stutter and learned to bury her painful shyness behind a pleasant, confident-seeming exterior.

The improvements came years too late for adoption, though, and so she lived at St. Nicholas until her eighteenth birthday. The orphanage could no longer keep her and couldn't afford to hire her on either, so Mrs. Grenfeld wrote her a glistening reference, helped her find a position as a lady's maid, and then paid for her first month's room and board at The Helvetca Boarding House for Young Ladies. Just like that, everything she knew was gone and she was completely alone.

She reported dutifully to work for Lady Augustine Weatherby, but in the quiet, reserved household, she found she missed the children of the orphanage and being needed terribly. It was only by chance that she saw an ad in the London Times for staff and teachers at a different orphanage. At turns thrilled, reticent and excited, she deliberated for a few days before finally applying, interviewing and being accepted.
