Good mini laptops? Empty Good mini laptops?

Post by Guest Mon Jun 07, 2010 5:41 pm

Once graduation is over, I'm thinking about getting myself a new mini laptop/notebook thing. I only want something that can access the internet and use a word processor, but I don't know how to use Linux or anything. I would honestly prefer that it have Windows 7.

My question is, does anyone know what a good mini laptop/notebook is? I would really like to keep the price below $400, though I might go as high as $500. I've looked at a few so far. I like ASUS and Toshiba, from what I've seen...but I really don't know what to look for. I'm not very computer savvy when it comes to the innards.

I'm not an expert, but when it comes to computers you decide based on what you need. If you're only planning to write on it, basically any will work.
Are you planning to watch on video? Like high- quality (HD) videos on the Internet? Or is it just like surfing forums and you email?
So what I'm basically asking is, what do you like to do on the Internet, because that might have to weight in when you choose a laptop/netbook.

I went looking yesterday and I think I found what I am going to get. It is an HP Mini, model N450 with a 10.1" screen, and Windows 7 Starter. It was about $350 in the store, but I found it on Newegg.com for $300. I might spend the extra $30 to get the full Windows 7.

As far as what I want from the internet...bascially just to use google for information and to have access to FOG. Anything else I can do on the desktop...which I gave to Ryona as a graduation gift Sad

Thanks for responding though, Miss Dagger!

If it makes any difference, I've been told by some computer techs that HPs are the brand of computer that they service most when it comes to maintenance... I know close to zilch about the technology that goes into minis, so I'm not much help.

When it comes to laptops you really have to make sure they don't get too hot, because they will burn your graphics card rather easily then... (that's been my problem) so get a laptop tray if you're planning to have tin your lap. As with service, I've had it several times, but I have some friends that swear by HPs and others that say they need a lot of service. I think in the end it comes down to how you use it.
Well something you don't need is the latest graphics card or processor. Since very good graphics and super fast processors are only useful if you're going to play games. You really only need the basics, so you can almost go for cheapest,d epending on how big a hard drive you want.

Oh no, I might be too late. But SIlvone, whatever you do, do not take to ASUS! The Asus has the Worlds Worst Technical Support, and that is a fact! Honestly, and this is if I am not too late, an HP mini is an awesome choice. It has everything you need; wireless Internet, can play some fun little games that the mini can handle, and only gets mildly hot, but the heat is wildly acceptable and even quite comfortable on cold days. Smile

So that's what I had to say, knowing that I am probably too late. :S

P.S.: Toshiba is also a very good choice, I am just not familiar with their minis. The brand is irreprochable when it comes to service/quality.

I got an HP Mini, and I am happy with the choice. I've heard that HP has bad technical support as well though...but we'll see. I've played a little bit of Diablo II, which lags in during big battles, and EVE which lags horribly at all times. Other than that, I just use it for writing and internet, so it works great!

The heat isn't too bad either, which is nice. My wife's old laptop let out a horrible amount of heat. You would almost burn your hand leaving it near the vent.

Thanks for responding though Smile At least I know not to buy an ASUS in the future.

No problem. I still know that Asus has the worst Tech Support. HP may be a bit bad, but that is what you get with big corporations, I guess.

Looks like you'll need a different computer for Diablo 3. Cool

Well, at least you have a good computer. XD

By the way, for the sole reason of you mentioning EVE on your last post, I was curious enough to see what it was. Yah, I am actually playing the trial right now... addicting... soo much...

Oh dear. I do believe Silvone is having a seizure of excitement. He will be on here in a moment preaching to you about why you should pay for it and join his corporation...
