Mythology's Finest
The Greek Gods are a fascinating brood. One of the only sets of deities that are not infallible, but merely powerful creators who must be pleased like normal people. They have wants and needs like man, but lack the ability to die by anything other than the hand of another god of greater power, or greater wit. They cheat, lie, steal, commit adultery, murder, and even feel guilt. They have families both on Olympus and Earth which they care for and mother or father. But they also commit the same wrongs to their offspring as the people of this earth.
If not appeased, they spite. They are children throwing tantrums at all times. It would almost seem they are human, if not for their continuous displays throughout generations. Their lives are endless occurrences by which humans can only relate.
The Gods have lives as we do. Families, as we do. Friends, as we do. Mistakes, as we do. How can we not relate their tales?
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
In my roleplay idea, as I've no real idea if this has been done on this forum before, is to act in the way of the Gods. My research in their lives, however, has brought me to an endless list of characters, so I do hope we can stick to the basics. The memorizing of so many names actually hurts my head.
The Higher Deities:
Also known as The Olympian Deities, these are the Gods known by most in pop culture. They are the most prominent in the myths and were the most praised by the Greeks.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Primordial Deities:
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Lesser Gods:
Although important enough for their own category and recognition, they were not strong enough figures for such appraisal given to the likes of The Olympian Gods.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Now, I don't expect this many people to join. Not in the slightest. I'm barely expecting the 12 Olympians to be taken, but I do think these other lesser and primordial Gods are good for reference and an idea at how large this mythology base is. Anyone up for it?

The Higher Deities:
Also known as The Olympian Deities, these are the Gods known by most in pop culture. They are the most prominent in the myths and were the most praised by the Greeks.
- Spoiler:
Zeus: Known as the King of the Gods he is the God most praised by kings and royalty. He is the god of the sky, thunder, law, order, and fate and father to many of the other deities, demi-gods, and heroes. He is the youngest son of Cronus and Rhea, and brother-husband to Hera. The thunderbolt, the royal scepter, and the eagle are held as his symbols.
Hera: Queen of the Gods, she was at Zeus's right-hand. She is goddess of marriage, women, childbirth, heirs, kings and empires. She was known for being jealous and spiteful, many myths revolving around her frequent spite, but still faithful to Zeus despite it. She is the daughter of Cronus and Rhea and is sister-wife to Zeus. She is mother to a few of the deities, but not a mother to as much as Zeus is a father. Her symbols include the diadem, the lotus-staff, the peacock, the cuckoo and the pomegranate.
Demeter: The goddess of fertility, agriculture, horticulture, grain and harvest, she is the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, sister to Zeus, and mother of Persephone, of whom Zeus is father. Her symbols are the Cornucopia (horn of plenty), wheat-ears, the winged serpent and the lotus staff.
Hades: King of the Underworld. god of death, the dead, and the hidden wealth of the Earth. He is the son of Cronus and Rhea and elder brother Zeus. One of his myths of fame was his theft of Persephone, whom he made his consort.
Hestia: Virgin goddess of the hearth, home, and cooking. She is the daughter of Cronus and Rhea, sister to Zeus. In some myths, she gave up her sister as an Olympian God to Dionysus, so she may tend the flame of Mount Olympus. Her symbols are the hearth and kettle
Poseidon: God of the sea, rivers, floods, droughts, earthquakes, and horses. He is also known as "The Storm-Bringer" and the "Earth Shaker". He is the son of Cronus and Rhea, and brother to Zeus. His symbols include the trident, dolphins and horses.
Aphrodite: Goddess of love, lust, beauty, seduction, and pleasure. Although married to Hephaestus, she has had many loves, the most recognizable being Ares. She is mother to Eros, God of Love (known as Cupid today). Her symbols include the dove, apple, scallop shell and myrtle wreath.
Apollo: God of music, healing, plague, prophecies, poetry, and archery, and associated with light and the sun. He is the twin brother to the virgin goddess Artemis and son of Zeus and Leto. His symbols include the laurel wreath, bow and quiver, raven, and lyre.
Ares: God of war, bloodlust, violence, manly courage, and civil order. He is the son of Zeus and Hera and brother to Athena, Artemis, and Apollo. His symbols include his sacred animals the eagle owl, the vulture and the venomous snake.Artemis: Virgin goddess of the hunt, wilderness, wild animals, childbirth and plague, and associated with the moon. She is the twin sister to Apollo and daughter of Zeus and Leto. Her symbols include include hunting spears, animal pelts, deer and other wild animals.
Athena: Virgin goddess of wisdom, warfare, strategy, heroic endeavor, handicrafts and reason. She was born from the head of Zeus, after having his head cracked open from a splitting headache (forgive the pun). Her symbols include the aegis, the owl and the olive tree.
Dionysus: God of wine, parties and festivals, madness, drunkenness and pleasure. He is the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele. His symbols include the thyrsus (a pine-cone tipped staff), drinking cup, grape vine and a crown of ivy.
Hephaestus: Crippled god of fire, metalworking, stonemasonry, sculpture and volcanism. The son of Hera by parthenogenesis, he is the smith of the gods and the husband of the adulterous Aphrodite. His symbols include the hammer, tongs and anvil.
Hermes: God of travel, messengers, trade, thievery, cunning wiles, language, writing, diplomacy, athletics, and animal husbandry. He is the messenger of the gods, a psychopomp who leads the souls of the dead into Hades' realm, and the son of Zeus and Maia. His symbols include the herald's wand or caduceus, winged sandals, and a traveler's cap.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Primordial Deities:
- Spoiler:
- Aether: He is the personification of the upper sky, space, and heaven, and is the elemental god of the "Bright, Glowing, Upper Air." He is the pure upper air that the gods breathe, as opposed to the normal air mortals breathe.
Ananke: She is the personification of destiny, necessity and fate. She marks the beginning of the cosmos, along with Chronos. She was seen as the most powerful dictator of all fate and circumstance which meant that the other Gods had to give her respect and pay homage as well as the mortals. She was also the mother of the Moirae, the three fates who were fathered by Zeus.Erebos: The God of darkness and shadow. His name is used interchangeably with Tartarus and Hades since Erebus is often thought of as part of the underworld. Erebus married his sister Nyx (goddess of the night) and their children included Aether, Hemera, Nemesis, and Charon.
Gaia: Goddess personifying the Earth, the Greek version of "Mother Nature". From the testicles of Uranus in the sea came forth Aphrodite. After Uranus's castration, Gaia gave birth to Echidna and Typhon by Tartarus. By Pontus, Gaia birthed the sea-deities Nereus, Thaumas, Phorcys, Ceto, and Eurybia. Aergia, a goddess of sloth and laziness, is the daughter of Aether and Gaia.
Hemera: She is the goddess of the daytime and the daughter of Erebos and Nyx. She was the female counterpart of her brother and consort, Aether.
Chronos: He is the personification of time. He and his consort, serpentine Ananke, circled the primal world-egg in their coils and split it apart to form the ordered universe of earth, sea and sky. He is not to be confused with the Titan Cronus.Nyx: Goddess of the night. A shadowy figure, Nyx stood at or near the beginning of creation, and was the mother of personified gods such as Hypnos (sleep) and Thánatos (death).
Uranus: Father Sky, is personified as the son and husband of Gaia, Mother Earth.
Phanes: Deity of procreation and the generation of new life.
Pontos: Personification of the Sea. Pontos was the son of Gaia, the Earth. With Gaia, he was the father of Nereus (the Old Man of the Sea), of Thaumas (the awe-striking "wonder" of the Sea, embodiment of the sea's dangerous aspects), of Phorcys and his sister-consort Ceto, and of the "Strong Goddess" Eurybia.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~
The Lesser Gods:
Although important enough for their own category and recognition, they were not strong enough figures for such appraisal given to the likes of The Olympian Gods.
- Spoiler:
: The primordial god of sexual love and beauty. He was also worshiped as a fertility deity. He is the son of Aphrodite and Ares and now typically known by "Cupid".
Eros
Hebe: Servant Goddess to the Gods, it was her duty to supply their wine and ambrosia. She is the daughter of Zeus and Hera, and wife to Hercules.
Hecate: Goddess of witchcraft, magic, crossroads, necromancy, wilderness and childbirth. She is the daughter of Perses and Asteria and mother to Medea and Circe.
Helios: God of the Sun. He is brother to Eos and Selene and son of the Titans Hyperion and Theia.
Iris: The personification of the rainbow and messenger of the gods. As the sun unites Earth and heaven, Iris links the gods to humanity. She travels with the speed of wind from one end of the world to the other[1], and into the depths of the sea and the underworld.
Selene: Goddess of the moon. She is the sister of Eos and Helios and daughter of the Titans Hyperion and Theia.
Pan: God of shepherds and flocks, of mountain wilds, hunting and rustic music. He is companion of the nymphs and son to Hermes and Dryope.
Nike: The Winged Goddess of Victory. She is the daughter of Pallas (Titan) and Styx (Water), and the sister of Cratos (Strength), Bia (Force), and Zelus (Rivalry).

User: YenWen
Goddess: Artemis
Personality: A tomboy by our standards, Artemis retains a grace while committing acts that would only be done in her time by a man. She has a slight detest for men and their dominance in all she does. She stands for any woman who dare take a bow in hand and go for the hunt against man. To those she can stand she is kind and sisterly. She enjoys excitement in every form, a natural thrill seeker.
Appearance: (to be drawn)
Current status among her fellow Gods: The only man she can truly tolerate is her brother, Apollo. She is dear friends with Athena, as she is another virgin goddess of a male-dominated field. She detests Zeus, her father, as for his womanizing values, Hera for her defilement of the woman's name.
User: Empowermint
God: Eros - The primordial god of sexual love and beauty. He was also worshiped as a fertility deity. He is the son of Aphrodite and Ares and now typically known by "Cupid".
Personality: Irreverant, childish and capricious, Eros nevertheless shows an unusal capacity for loyalty, as demonstrated in his devoltion to Psyche and Hedone. The extent to which his immature sense of humour is calculated to make him less of a threat to the other gods is unclear.
Appearance:
Current status among their fellow Gods: Eros is considered childish by the adult gods, and they usually go to Aphrodite over him whenever escort-related services are required, not realising that it is only Eros who possesses the golden arrows. Most of the time Eros is unnoticed and is able to gambol around gathering gossip as he pleases: to an extent his childish image is calculated. Hera thinks Aphrodite is an unsuitable mother and Eros frequently abuses her maternal instincts for his own ends.
Eros's mother, Aphrodite, or "the bint in the bikini" as she is affectionately known, is still angry at him over the whole Psyche debacle.
Wife: Psyche; Daughter: Hedone; Mother: Aphrodite; Father: Hephaestus;
Extra Information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Eros
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupid
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cupid_and_Psyche
Eros carries a quiver of arrows that cause the wounded to fall in love with the first living creature they see after being hit. The timing of matchings needs to be carefully calibrated, as watching mortals rush around courting badgers got boring a few hundred years ago; though the odd love-polygon is always a good tonic to a rainy afternoon.
Username: Harper
God(dess): Erebos
Personality: He is a master planner who hides his genius in madness. Erebos makes himself seem unpredictable, using constant and shifting voices and tones, preying on fear and confusion like darkness does. To a fortified and prepared mind, he is simply mad, but to a normal one he can make the individual feel isolated like a child trapped in a forest on a moonless night. His genius, though, reflects the planned nature of shadows and darkness bending over the world with the coming of night.
Appearance: His skin is grey and lined with wrinkly cracks. He’s long, narrow, and constantly wears a black hooded cloak over himself, kept tight, with the hood drawn so his face is hid in shadows. Blue lips, a long narrowed nose, and thin black hair. Sallow face, bags under his eyes, and a twisted grin. Yellow teeth.
Current status among their fellow Gods: Aloof to most, including his children. Nyx keeps him in line so his amusement in meddling with mortals does not go too far and treats him more like a mother than lover. He becomes nervous around the higher gods, especially when he is under scrutiny.
Extra Information: When toying with mortals, no matter their height, he’s only comfortable looming three feet above them. Beside higher gods, he shrinks.
Username: YenWen
God(dess): Nyx
Personality: Nyx is a bit egocentric. She cares very much for her looks, since the night should be beautiful after all. She looks for a shallow crowd, that can appreciate her fine self-grooming, and won't look further into 'personality', really. However, she does have a fondness for a few select, to whom she shows a caring quality, and doesn't hide it. It is around these people she can be truly genuine.
Appearance: (To be drawn)
Current status among their fellow Gods: Being a realm, primordial Goddess, many have respect for her and her power, however she has sank below most of their favors for her misconduct around mortals, being amongst them as much as she is. She has a fondness, however, for the moon goddess, bring a heavenly beauty upon her gifts, and for the dark god, Erebos, who she has to keep a personal eye on as often as possible. Most others can't appreciate her beauty and grace, as she likes to think, and therefore she doesn't acknowledge them.
Extra Information:
Username: Bird of Hermes
God(dess): Hermes
Personality: Hermes would find it hard to keep serious at all if it wasn't for the demands of the other gods. His tricks and antics are literally without end - in the thousands of years the god has been alive, he has never been at a loss for mayhem. Hermes has mastered the art of illusion and can transform into nearly anything. He barely uses the same form twice to the other gods' continued annoyance. Hermes's wit and cunning are without match, even if he has developed a propensity to let this mouth run wild.
Appearance:
Current status among their fellow Gods: Hermes can find a way to pester just about anyone, even the most powerful of the gods. He is of most annoyance to Zeus who can not find nearly enough letters these days to keep Hermes busy and out of his way. Hades thinks that Hermes slacks off in his duty of ferrying the souls of the dead to the underworld; Hermes just thinks he is being innovative in his methods.
Extra Information: God of travel, messengers, trade, thievery, cunning wiles, language, writing, diplomacy, athletics, and animal husbandry. He is the messenger of the gods, a psychopomp who leads the souls of the dead into Hades' realm, and the son of Zeus and Maia. His symbols include the herald's wand or caduceus, winged sandals, and a traveler's cap.
Username: Dax
God(dess): Zeus, 'King' of gods
Personality: He is arrogant, obnoctious and a bully. He has a good side, he just has a hard time showing it.
Appearance:
Current status among their fellow Gods: Zeus is the obnoctious, arrogant and bully ‘King’ of the Gods. A king lacking loyal and subjects that aren’t downright hostile to him.
Zeus is trying to change, however. And that is indeed possible. Because under all of that negative personnality and habits, there is just an old king that does in fact love his kingdom and those that inhabit it and wants to protect and love them.
He just has a hard time showing it.

Re: Mythology's Finest
You have no idea how excited this makes me! Take as many as you like, who ever you like. I'm thinking as soon as all the Olympians are taken, I think I'll close it up.
As for me, I'll be taking Artemis and Nyx. I'll put up a character sheet in a few moments.

Bird of Hermes, you must obviously be Hermes or it will all be too confusing

In the setup I have I can't honestly keep a solid plot line to it. It's more of a go with it as it grows. The personality and power of the Gods is sure to keep it entertaining.

God(dess): Selene
Personality: A calm woman, she doesn't have much to fret about. She cares for the humans below Olympus and for her brother, Helios, as well.
Appearance:
Current status among their fellow Gods:
Selene mainly hangs out with her brother Helios. She doesn't care much for the higher gods/goddesses. Though she doesn't care for the higher gods/godesses, she does respect them

Re: Mythology's Finest
Dionysus
God of wine, parties and festivals, madness, drunkenness and pleasure. He is the son of Zeus and the mortal Semele. His symbols include the thyrsus (a pine-cone tipped staff), drinking cup, grape vine and a crown of ivy.
Personality:
Dio has never had a hangover in his life and consequently has a rather jolly time of it. He is always to be found at the center of the party, always generous towards his followers and always up for a bit of rumpy pumpy. Nowadays Dio is usually to be found lounging in the form of an overweight man on a chaise-long, though in his youth he was eerily beautiful. He wears a red silk dressing gown not unlike the one worn by Hugh Hefnor, smokes a pipe and enjoys doing crosswords, all secrets he keeps from the other gods in case they damage his reputation.
Appearance:
Current status among his fellow Gods:
Dio enjoys the company of Aphrodite, with whom he has had a child, Priapus (now one of the retinue). He often trying for a repeat performance, but without much hope. Illogically, Dio and Hephaestus get along well, Aphro's adultary giving them something to bond over.
Dio does not get along with Apollo, whom he considers a bit of a know-it-all, and Hera still resents Dio as the illegitimate child of her husband.
Mother: Semele; Father: Zeus; Son: Priapus;
Extra Information:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dionysus
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Apollonian_and_Dionysian
Followed by a retinue of drunken revellers called maenads (raving women) and satyrs (men) and the odd nymph or centaur. Rides a chariot drawn by panthers and has a riding-leopard.

Oh, I would most certainly be interested!
I believe that, if there are no objections, will take up Zeus. For, as far as my knowledge goes, although he is the 'king' of gods, he isn't the most powerful, yes?

Setting
While being gods allows us the convenience of being anywhere we want in the world, I would like to know your opinions on the time era. I personally prefer setting this in modern times, however, this isn't just my role play. Does gods set to meddle in modern affairs sound good?

And, Dax, Zeus isn't in the least the most powerful. He's a big bully, I'd say. Like that big kid on the playground that turns purple when he's made fun of, but starts crying if he gets hit first.

Re: Mythology's Finest
If you want to update your profiles to fit a modern setting, I would. I'm going to update my own, redraw Artemis (as I haven't started on Nyx yet). And when I say modern setting, I mean today. Anywhere in the world, of their choice, seeing as how many places their are now that weren't there in the Golden Age.

If any of you want, since I need the practice, I can draw busts for you of any character designs you have in mind, as long as you give me a good description. That's what I'm doing for my own characters. But keep in mind, they won't be in color, just a sketch.

Re: Mythology's Finest
I like the idea of an urban setting and have already chose my gods (Appolo and Erebos) and I like the idea of the urban setting too. But I was wondering if we could use our characters and pit them against each other to create a conflict. Is that a good idea or bad...?

The Old Gods
Now they are condemned
to live in cracks
in bubbles of plaster and rust
and spiders' webs
behind the furniture:
speaking a derelict language
to empty space,
sealed with the vapour
in bottles, closed in the blown
robins' eggs
in some abandoned loft.
Each has its given power.
Each has its heart, its secret,
its local name,
and each has its way of learning
the skill of return,
the science of bleeding through, when anger or fear
is fuzzing the surface,
making us dizzy and whole.

Re: Mythology's Finest
I was thinking about having Hermes work as a paper boy and have him ride a Vespa.

Ah! This sounds so interesting!
Bird of Hermes is now Hermes, so is Apollo open? I can't decide if I'd like Apollo or Ares more...

Re: Mythology's Finest
I have someone trying for Apollo, I'm not sure if he has it done yet or not, so you are still welcome to make a profile for it. It's first come, first serve, but no one has applied or mentioned wanting Ares. I say go for both, if you'd like.
And Bird of Hermes, I like your idea. It has a very 'incognito'-esque feel to it, which is what I was hoping for. Something they use to be around mortals more often, that fits their personality. Like how I see Nyx hanging around night clubs as much as possible and Artemis being a feminist in California.
