Hello to the FOG
Hello all! I'm Falciferum or Falci if it's more convenient. The name means scythe-wielding in Latin and I chose the name because scythes are my favorite form of weaponry. (they can also be used as a gardening tool I guess)
I'm a junior in high school and have been RPing off and on for three or so years now. I take all the writing classes possible at school because I want to do something involving writing though I'm not quite sure what yet. I'm also taking some free creative writing workshops outside of school which are really fun. There's a lot of free time in my schedule outside of that and school so RPs are usually easy to get into and to create quality posts for. I enjoy reading, writing and playing video games, which are where I get a lot of my inspiration for writing from. I play a lot of RPGs and TF2 and sometimes some MMOs. But I haven't found one that has caught my interest in quite some time.
I enjoy Fantasy role plays and I'm fascinated with steampunk and all things surround that genera. I usually don't play a pre-made character as I love creating my own and I refuse to use pictures in descriptions; I feel it's a much more genuine description without a picture. I'm still learning a lot from school, even though I'm a better writer than most, so you can expect my post to only be improving from now.
Well that's all I really have to say for now. I'm hoping to gets lots of awesome greetings from you guys at FOG!

Re: Hello to the FOG
Welcome to FoG, Falciferum.
I'm sure that you'll find that FoG is a pretty good place to achieve more practice in writing. You can share your stories and the like here to have them read by others, too.
Like you, I much prefer a written description of a character. I sometimes use images to complement the written description, but I never simply use an image and be done with it.
I hope you enjoy your stay. ^^_^^

Re: Hello to the FOG
Well thank you for the kind introduction Kathryn. I think it's good to compliment the description too I just always end up coming up with my own characters and I would never find a picture that matches my description. I'm also to lazy to go and look around on the internet for ones that are close to my description. Picture finding isn't my forte anyway.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Yeah. I only recently upgraded from dial-up to DSL, so I really didn't enjoy hunting for images that matched my characters. If I came across an image that suited my character, peachy. If not, oh well. No sense in wasting my time.

Welcome to FOG Falci, it's nice to see a new face. Actually, I think there are a few new faces I need to welcome, but because of school, I don't have the time. Lucky you are first pick though and got the morning welcome!

Welcome! I'm sure your scythe will come in handy around here, just be careful in the fog. You wouldn't want to accidentally strike down any future best-selling authors...or would you? *eyes up the weapon, ponders running for the hills*

Sorry; ignore that. ^^

I'm in my fifth year of college, and I still say that. I'm not sure what I want to do, and unfortunately I don't want to do what I'm good at (newspaper writing). I want to write books, I have all the ideas down, but I am, quite unfortunately, not very good at novel writing. So, who knows. The only thing I can tell you is to be good at many forms of writing, so that you don't get stuck in my situation!
Welcome to FOG I'm sure you will enjoy yourself here. We all enjoy quality posts, and eager writers.

Thank you all for the awesome greetings! And thank you Kalon I knew genre looked off but firefox said it was right so I stuck with it. Compliment was my own fault however thank you again.
I'll also be careful with my scythe for all of those worried about it so.
I do hope I'm not in the same boat as you Silvone. I kind of want to be a teacher but I don't think I would much like having to stick to the curriculum. Newspaper articles wouldn't be too bad in my opinion. I also want to write a book but I really don't know if I'll ever get the necessary will and drive to.

Re: Hello to the FOG
I'm pretty sure he was correcting Kathryn, Falci. Kathryn had said she used images to compliment her character's description, but she meant to say that she used images to complement her character's description.
Apparently, "genera" is a plural form of "genus". I wasn't aware of that, so take heart in the knowledge that your error led to someone learning something moderately useful.
Anyway, all of that is neither here nor there.
On behalf of the Administration (namely our dear FOG Mother and Queen who is currently on hiatus) and the other members of staff who don't frequent the introductions forum, I welcome you to the site!
Hermes, on the ball as always, has already linked you to the most pertinent sections of the forum, so I'm certain navigation will be a trifle matter. I guess that doesn't leave me much to do at all, really.
I feel a bit sad.
All the same, it's good to have you on board. Though our members can sometimes be a bit overzealous with correcting stray grammar, they're generally a fun and amusing bunch who will certainly make you feel right at home. We have lots of RPs that you can peruse through in your free time, and there are four separate forums containing different varieties of roleplay that you can choose from to take part in. Alternatively, you can create your own and see who's interested before starting up an epic campaign that will dazzle the hearts of children everywhere!
Ahem! My apologies. I sometimes get a little excited.
I see you are also a fan of the scythe. I've always had a grim fascination with the weapon, and typically my favorite characters in a particular series of game or television show will wield such devices. Ironically, I can't say I grew very attached to Marluxia, so I find him to be an interesting choice of a character avatar. I do, however, like his pink hair. And I mean that.
What types of video games are you interested in? I mean, RPG is a very broad genre, encompassing everything from Fantasy Adventure (The Legend of Zelda) to Sci-Fi Action/Adventure (Star Ocean). Do you have any particular favorites in the realm of RPGs? I could certainly recommend a few games that I feel are completely deserving of a place in history. Some of them can even be played for free these days using an emulator, since they're retro items from the SNES era.
Arabesque and I have also been doing a little bit of talking about the upcoming string of MMOs, the titles of which are as follows:
a. Star Wars: The Old Republic
b. Global Agenda
c. Final Fantasy XIV
I'm sure you've heard of at least two of them. The fact that BioWare is producing SW:TOR makes it a near-guaranteed hit with the gaming community, and FInal Fantasy XIV is a series known for its amazing games up until the double-digits. Final Fantasy XI, however, was a huge success in the MMO industry, and now that Square Enix is no longer hindered by the PS2's limited capacity, I'm certainly looking forward to their new title more than anything.
Anyway, I'll leave it at that for now. It's good to have you on board. If you get bored or want to chat while going about other things, feel free to swing by the IRC chat room, the link to which is located at the top of the forum. It's been more lively lately with the influx of new members and some tireless promotion, so I'm hoping that trend will continue until we have a very active chat room where users can share ideas and get to know one another on a real-time basis.
Enjoy your stay, Falci!

Re: Hello to the FOG
Thank you, I quite enjoyed reading that there greeting. I didn't realize he was correcting Kathtryn on the second word, Oh well.
I enjoy Bethesda's games and play a lot of Final Fantasy titles. My favorite game however is Dark Cloud 2. I have loved this title for years and years and I never grow tired of it. The same company has produced Rouge Galaxy which is a more sci-fi oriented game with a similar battle system.
I have, in fact, heard of GA and FF XIV. I want GA but I'm waiting until steam has a 33% off (or any % off really) sale to get it. I don't like spending $50 on games myself so I'll usually wait off to get most titles. An acception to the rule will likely be for FFXIV which I have been interested in for about a year now. Since I don't have a job I may not be able to get it before summer as that's when I'm getting one (hopefully).
I may be on the IRC if I'm bored but I'm playing a few games right now and that pretty much keeps me busy. I've also been looking for an RP to get into but nothing has peaked my interest quite yet and the RP I want to create will take a lot of planning. I'll probably post up my stories from my creative writing courses in the journal section but I don't know how that works. If you could explain it to me (though I'm sure it's quite easy) I would greatly appreciate it.
I like his whole color scheme myself. I wish I was better with photoshop because I'm sure the avatar could look much better but it's alright for now. What other Scythe wielding characters are you found of?
Well that's all I have for now. Thanks for the greeting Weiss.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Well, first and foremost, my favorite scythe-wielding character is The Grim Reaper. I could write for a day about the things that attract me to such a dark and terrifying being, but suffice to say that he is one of the ultimate badasses of lore and legend.
There are numerous others, though; many of which are from anime series. Duo from Gundam was the pilot of the Deathscythe Hell, which was probably my first encounter with an anime character who (even if indirectly) used a scythe. In fact, his weapon is partially to blame for the original item Reactive Rods that my Caligoan character employs.
Scythes and white hair are the biggest thing for me. Find a way to mix the two, and you've probably created a character that I would absolutely adore.
I've actually never played Dark Cloud or Dark Cloud 2. Despite having thought about trying them, I couldn't find any reliable reviews, so I didn't want to spend the money when there were other games I could purchase that had a good reputation behind them. I sort of regret that now, since I've known a few people who greatly enjoyed them.
I can also agree to waiting for new games to have their price reduced, but only when it's a game I haven't been anticipating for a long time. FFXIV will probably fall into my hands the moment it hits the shelves. I fully intend to get addicted to that game and waste a large amount of my life forgetting that anyone besides my character exists in this world.
That may be a slight exaggeration, mind you.
Also, I'd recommend erecting a barrier of some sort. Kathryn will be along shortly to not only fire a crossbow at you for misspelling her name, but also to chastise you for incorrectly spelling "Rogue" in Rogue Galaxy. She does tend to do that, after all.

I've already told you that I don't correct new members in their welcome threads any more.
However, I did notice the misspelling of my name, and that's one of the top things I demand be properly spelled, so I'll make an exception for that.. K-a-t-h-r-y-n. There you go. I don't like nicknames, either, just so you know.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Oh I think it was just a slip of the finger I never intended to spell it with an extra T. I guess that's what I get for not re-reading my posts thoroughly. Sorry Kathryn. Rogue is one of those words that always trips me up for some reason, very annoying, I intend to work on it among other common spelling errors I frequently make. Without spell check incorrectly spelled words would simply run rampant throughout my posts.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Don't worry about it, Falci. We all know - at least, I hope we all do - that they're simply spelling errors. Some of the users here are just fanatical about correcting the spelling and grammar of others, even as they make numerous mistakes of their own.
Alas, such is not the point of an introduction thread, and I had forgotten Kathryn's stance on not correcting people in such threads.
Anyway, I'm more interested in the conversation we were having. You completely left it alone in favor of apologizing. [Prods with a twig.]

Re: Hello to the FOG
Ah yes of course, silly me.
Well I think the Grim Reaper is very awesome myself. My love of scythes however comes from the various small military groups throughout the ages that used them as their main line of weaponry. Most of them led by peasants who adapted their farming tools into deadly weapons. I haven't seen any Gundam animes; I don't really watch a lot of anime or TV in general (from the tele' or otherwise) but I'm pretty sure I've come across pictures of that particular Gundam suit before.
You can find the Dark Cloud games for cheap (like 10 dollars) at used game stores or even Gamestop/Gamecrazy if you're lucky.
If I could spend more time with MMOs I'm sure I would but I have a few other things going on that distract me from putting too much time into them. For one I text with my girlfriend which, as you can imagine, takes a bit of time out of actually playing games. That's not to say I can't play while doing it but it just means I tend to pay less attention. Also I go over to her house as well as go out on occasion and I care about that a lot more than any silly old video game. I guess that's really only one thing...I'll be posting here too so that will take some time as well. Oh! and I go to a creative writing workshop every Monday and Thursday. I knew I was forgetting something.
P.S. White hair is very bad ass. *nods in agreement*

Re: Hello to the FOG
I was intrigued when I learned about the origins of the scythe as a weapon myself. I even started working that into some of my character profiles for scythe-wielders, placing them in situations where a weapon was needed and our favorite farming implement was the nearest at hand.
As much as I love retro gaming, I never have time to play through old titles anymore. If I ever get the time, though, I'll certainly check into them. I'm always up for a good RPG, after all. I miss the days when they were more about an amazing and intricate story full of side-quests and mini-plots as opposed to shiny graphics.
I can certainly understand your stance on time spent. Relationships are more important, after all. It's great that you prioritize taking the time to keep her happy, since neglect seems to be one of the leading causes of misfortune in relationships these days.
I just noticed that your location is Castle Oblivion. [Chuckles.] With just the Marluxia avatar, I didn't want to assume, but I'm guessing now that you're a Kingdom Hearts fan. I love the games myself, so I figured I'd inquire. I'm sincerely hoping they'll make another for the Xbox 360 and PS3, since I wouldn't be able to play it if it's only for the PS3. Then again, I'd probably end up spending the money that I really don't have to buy a PS3 if it was to play Kingdom Hearts.

Re: Hello to the FOG
I'm glad to see you also like the scythe's origins. I find it interesting how far it has come from how it traditionally looked. I'm pretty sure we just have the Reaper to blame on that though.
Older RPGs are quite fun to me but I also like the new stuff. I'm fortunate enough to have a father who has every major video game console hooked up to his big screen TV so that when I want to play something for the PS3 or whatnot I have the opportunity. I do have a PS2 and Wii in my room so that's where most of my console time goes.
That's too bad about your relations I never know what I'm doin' anyway so I'm lucky to have been with my girlfriend for over a year now.
Yes I am a fan of the Kingdom Hearts series, I think it is amazing. Disney and square (mostly square) do quite the splendid job when it comes to making a huge, captivating story that changes over multiple games. If you have a PSP the new KH Birth by Sleep is coming out and that looks to be quite spectacular. I've already dabbled too far in the Wiki looking over the new story details from the Japanese version.
You shouldn't bother to get the PS3, just wait for their new console to come out in a few years. I don't think KH3 will be released for some time anyways.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Oh, I didn't mean to imply that my relationships ended because of neglect. That would be impossible, since I have a tendency to be rather clingy. Alas, my failed endeavors into love aren't important.
I agree that Kingdom Hearts is an amazing game series. I've played Kingdom Hearts II so much I've nearly memorized the whole game. It's a shameful addiction, but I love the characters, the gameplay style, and even the incorporation of Disney elements. It's a unique gaming experience that works surprisingly well, and I keep hoping and hoping that they'll release a new game for a console that I own or can reasonably obtain.
Unfortunately, I sold my PSP quite a while ago when I figured they'd never release anything decent for it. I may look into buying a new one, you guessed it, so I can play Birth by Sleep, since I might very well die of despair if I'm forced to live without playing a Kingdom Hearts game.
I suppose you're right about the PS3, but I really wonder. The PS3, despite having been out for a little while, is only now getting exclusive titles. I don't think they'll replace the system for at least a good seven to eight years, because it will be at least a few more years before they reach the pinnacle of the system's capabilities. At the moment, the field is still being tested. Final Fantasy XIV, which is set to release on the PC and the Xbox 360 and PS3 platforms, will be a true test of how far they can push the limits of the consoles. At the moment, it's looking very, very promising. All the same, I'm glad I'll be playing it on my trusty PC.
I have to ask now, though. While I get the feeling it would be Marluxia judging by your avatar, who is your favorite character from the Kingdom Hearts franchise?
If I had to choose, mine would probably be Axel. Not only is he one of those cool "bad guys who aren't really bad guys" that I find myself drawn to in any media, but he's got a catchy phrase. Got it memorized?

Re: Hello to the FOG
Oh lookie here! Someone my own age!
'tis not often that we get a youngin' wander through the swirly mists of this here FoG... In fact I get quite lonely sometimes. It's true that others do try to comfort me but they have that old people smell about them you know? There's one in particular that has a most potent odor... W.E.I.S.S. He just tries to hide behind his knowledge of young people video games. Be wary though! It's all a guise.
Okay okay, I've had my fun. Welcome to FoG, Falciferum! As you can see, we're all a really friendly bunch here - even the Administrators - so I'm sure you'll fit right in. If you have any questions or problems don't feel afraid to ask them (just make sure you spell them correctly ) aaaand finally I hope you enjoy your stay!

Re: Hello to the FOG
Weiss: I suppose you are correct about the PS3 but it may come down to Sony needing to release a newer console (even if its just a major update like the PSP slim) to compete with Microsoft if they release a new one. There are so many ways that could go so I don't think it needs to really be discussed too much. I like the PSP personally I know it doesn't have too many awesome games on it but what it does have are strong titles. I have the Japanese version of Dissidia which, despite me being unable to understand, is great fun.
Marluxia is very cool and I like his appearance but I can't really pick out a favorite. If it were just in Organization XIII then my favorite would be Xaldin, overall it would be him or Riku. I like anti-heroes and Xaldin's spears are simply amazing. I also loved how he could turn them into a dragon.
Sin: Yes indeedy it is nice to see someone around my age. I've only seen one other person around this age group and that's Eternity. I'm sure there are more but I've only looked in my intro thread for ages. I do like the friendliness of everyone and it's cool to be able to talk to the Admins like everyone else even though I've only been here a matter of days. I don't mind being corrected on grammar one bit I think it's quite nice. Thank you for the greeting Sin!

Re: Hello to the FOG
Well, it's not the grammar you should be worried about. People will correct your grammar, yes, but not only that. They will correct your spelling. Not just words that you consistently misspell to the point where one might question if you know the correct spelling at all, but even small errors that occur simply because you didn't see it fit to spell check every word in your post for complete and total accuracy.
Alas, you shall see for yourself eventually; though, hopefully not.
I suppose it is kind of different for an Administrator to be so out and about on the forums, but the ones on this site have a tendency to be that way, because we actually enjoy talking to our members. After all, we wouldn't bother maintaining the site if we weren't interested in its purpose. So, while you may think it's cool that you get to talk to the Administrators, we think it's cool that we get to talk with so many delightfully talented writers.
Xaldin was kind of cool, I guess. I don't mind anti-heroes, but I'm not fond of villains. Sure, sometimes you see a villain that's so absolutely badass that you can't help but love them, but someone who does evil knowingly without contemplation of the consequences lacks depth of character in my eyes.
I see what you mean about his spears, though. I always thought they were cool, except when he does that huge laser beam attack that's nearly impossible to get away from in the fight at Beast's castle.
What did you think of the first Kingdom Hearts? Better or worse than the second? In spite of most people wanting to immediately claim that the first is always better!, I have to say that I liked the second quite a bit more from a gameplay angle. While I think the first one had a deeper plot that was more emotionally invested, the second had a lot of amazing scenes and some very fun game mechanics, as well as a plot continuation that wasn't disappointing the way many sequels end up.
So, I guess I would say that the first was better in the way of plot, plunging Sora into new worlds and forcing him to overcome the darkness both around him and within him. He was pitted against numerous challenges, fighting to rescue the girl he adored and to redeem his best friend, who had gotten lost in the darkness, himself.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Well KH2 was a lot easier than 1. I liked the challenge I got from 1 on the hardest difficulty and I was kind of disappointing that 2 didn't have that level of difficulty. That being said I thought the game play was much more developed and enjoyable in KH2. KH1 had the better plot I would have to say, I was much more drawn into it and I thought there was a lot more mystery and wonder to the world. I wasn't expecting as much of either of those two things in the second because, after all, it was a sequel so I can't say I was unhappy with the story. I think both games have their high and low points but if I had to choose it would have to be 2.
I think it's very cool that you admins love to talk to your members and be a big part of the community. It makes it more fun for everyone.

Kalon Ordona II wrote:*the grammaton swordsman strikes fast and true*---genera------->genre---compliment------->complement
Weiss wrote:I'm pretty sure he was correcting Kathryn, Falci. Kathryn had said she used images to compliment her character's description, but she meant to say that she used images to complement her character's description.
You're both wrong, btw. There are two spellings of the word. Neither Falciferum nor myself were incorrect in the spelling when we typed "compliment." Nice try.
How are you enjoying yourself so far, Falciferum?

It's quite nice here, I must say. I'm enjoying having random conversations in the chat room and trying to get my RP started. I'll also be joining Baker's upcoming RP so that's good. Everyone is very friendly, which is nice and welcoming. I really like FOG, thanks for asking.

Re: Hello to the FOG
I'm really glad that you're having a good time. I enjoy FoG a lot, myself, if it wasn't already obvious. heheh
I'm also pleased to hear that you'll be joining a role play soon. I've found interest in a lot of games, but when I first got here, I didn't join a role play for a couple of months. I guess having a larger variety of people now than when I first got here is extremely helpful.
I hope your new role play will be successful.

Re: Hello to the FOG
Actually, Kathryn, you are wrong, yet again.
Nice try.
Still waiting for word from Saori on joining your RP, Falci. Seems she's rather busy. She seemed interested, though, because it apparently reminds her of Dragon Age: Origins.
On that point, have you played the game?
com•pli•ment [n. kom-pluh-muhnt; v. kom-pluh-ment]
–noun
1. an expression of praise, commendation, or admiration: A sincere compliment boosts one's morale.
2. a formal act or expression of civility, respect, or regard: The mayor paid him the compliment of escorting him.
3. compliments, a courteous greeting; good wishes; regards: He sends you his compliments.
4. Archaic. a gift; present.
–verb (used with object)
5. to pay a compliment to: She complimented the child on his good behavior.
6. to show kindness or regard for by a gift or other favor: He complimented us by giving a party in our honor.
7. to congratulate; felicitate: to compliment a prince on the birth of a son.
While the term "complement" can be used (in its obsolete form) to mean "compliment", the opposite is not true. Since the term you meant to use was complement, you were, indeed, completely and absolutely wrong.com•ple•ment [n. kom-pluh-muhnt; v. kom-pluh-ment]
–noun
1. something that completes or makes perfect: A good wine is a complement to a good meal.
2. the quantity or amount that completes anything: We now have a full complement of packers.
3. either of two parts or things needed to complete the whole; counterpart.
4. full quantity or amount; complete allowance.
5. the full number of officers and crew required on a ship.
–verb (used with object)
12. to complete; form a complement to: This belt complements the dress better than that one.
13. Obsolete. to compliment.
Nice try.
