In theaters November 13th

So, who's going to see this movie? Smile *raises hand* This looks amazing, just effects-wise! It looks like it'll be really suspenseful, and I've always been a fan of mass terror for some reason! I LOVE movies that have mass hysteria, like War of the Worlds and Cloverfield, and the tornado drill going off is just amazing to me for reasons I can't explain haha.

I really honestly do not know what to expect for 2012 (in reality), but regardless, I find it incredibly interesting that the movie is based on all this information out there on that date. Very Happy

I doubt I will, but I rarely go to movies. Also, I don't think the movie will be that accurate on what the information actually states either, seeing as how most people thing it all means the end of the world when that isn't even close to what the prophecies or scientific evidence points to. Nonetheless it could still be an interesting movie… I just don’t like spending money on such things. Last time I went to one it was The Spirit (which I hated) and only because I was dragged to it and someone else paid…

Regardless of when the end of days occurs you should all be living life to the fullest because your end of days may not be the same as everyone else. *nods all sage like*

That's a very good philosophy, Squall! I think many of us do take life everything in it for granted.

I doubt that the information in the movie is anything you want to base your beliefs on by any means lol. I think it's all just loosely based on the information that's out there on the end of the world in 2012, but even so, not all the information is very credible either. If anything, I'm sure the producers would have adjusted the facts to be even more dramatic or thrilling and to suit the needs of the film.

Sadly I think most humans take life for granted, less of course factors/events in your life make it so that you realize its sacredness . For me it was growing up in a rough neighborhood that made me realize that I really have NO DAMN IDEA when I'm going to die.

But now lets talk about the movie.

Oh it looks like a effect/CGI/disaster orgasm. I'll see it to enjoy that, though I will probably still rip it for it's poor acting and the sub par script. But really who's IS going to see the movie for those things. lol

I had very high hopes for the film after seeing the first preview, with the water rushing over the mountains and the monks ringing the bell. But after seeing a more recent preview, I completely lost interest. I had thought that the movie would be done more artistically, rather than simply being another Day After Tomorrow and other such world disaster movies. But it's not... At least, thats not how the new preview makes it seem.

As for my actual beliefs regarding 2012, I am a total Jack Shepard. Sure, I may be proven wrong, but that wouldn't invalidate my outlook on life or my views on science. If, of course, I'm still alive to say so.

I don't believe anything will happen on 2012. I think it's been rather rude of people to take a very advanced calendar my ancestors had developed and turned it into a dooms day clock. For all we know it could have been like any other calendar. (The world doesn't end when you have to throw out your 2009 calendar does it guys?) Though I admit I'm rather partial to the idea that 2012 will be the beginning of a whole new era for humanity, this time of great change may give that argument some credence. All I can say if that's true is, let's get with the superpowers people!

If I remember my hostory correctly, the Mayan calender is amazing accurate. BUT, ours is not. I believe we're off a few years somewhere along the line due to various people restarting and changing the calender to suit their own egos.

I remember something about this when the year 2000 was being discussed as a world-ender and in reality it had occured in 1996 or some such.

So while, I believe the Mayan may be right regarding 'a time of great change and upheaval' may occur in 2012. It may just be a self-fulfilling prophesy we put in place by sheer stupidity and ego.

Yeah... I'm not sure why you'd want to see any movie of this nature (like the others I mentioned: War of the Worlds and Cloverfield) for its storyline or its acting. XD Lol that kind of defeats the purpose of the entire thing. If you go to a movie about the end of the world only wanting to see it for its storyline, then you probably are in the wrong movie. Laughing It's like going to see a horror film for its level of romance. Sure, romance may be involved (just as a storyline may be involved in a mass hysteria type film), but that's not at all the purpose of the movie itself.

Yeah I agree Fate. I'm not going there for the acting, just to enjoy the CGI. But I will still rip it for the acting and storyline because well it's fun. XD But seriously I forgive movies like 2012 but it's movies like....Transformers 2 that I REALLY cannot let pass. The movies where they spend 200 MILLION dollars just to make the damn movie and it seems like they didn't spend at least 5 million on a decent storyline, or in Transformers 2 case decent math. I think last years batch of movies really SPOILED the hell out of us. They were almost all GREAT movies with great action, great acting (Oscar bitches!), and gripping storyline. I'll even come out and say it was maybe the best year for movies since...shit 1982. Oh don't remember 1982? Here's a SHORT list. Blade Runner, E.T., The Dark Crystal, Poltergeist, The Thing, Tron, and The Road Warrior. Yes these ALL came out in 1982...fucking wow.

Who will survive 2012? Empty Re: Who will survive 2012?

Well, the thing about the Mayan Calendar and the year 2012 is not that the world is going to end… it is supposed to be the end of an era. Through calculation, when they made the calendar it was supposed to be the same exact amount of time to 2012 as it had been since man discovered fire up until the current time of the Mayans. So… they were making a guess that there would be another shift in the way the world was… but not the end of the world.

However, it goes deeper than that. The Mayans were able to calculate a lot of astrological events. And, there is this thing known as the Galactic Equator. Apparently, we are supposed to be in the middle of crossing the Galactic Equator around December 23rd (if memory serves correctly) in the year of 2012… the last tome this happened was supposed to date back to around the time man discovered fire. And… at that time Alaska used to be at the Equator of the Earth.

You see, some scientists believe that due to gravitational pulls the axis of the Earth might tilt somewhere around 25 degrees. This would cause dramatic changes in the world and would result in the worst natural disasters in recorded history; hence again, the end of an era. Does this mean the end of the world? Of course not… should anyone fret over it and fear it? Of course not…

I myself take one day at a time… one moment at a time even. Numerous things could happen within even the next five minutes that could be the end of my own life… thus I don’t concern myself much with the future. Nothing is certain save that some day I will die… for now I’m enjoying the ride while I can because once I’m gone that is it… there is nothing beyond that. Of course, that is my own beliefs speaking since I’ve no belief in an afterlife.

Sorry to bring this off topic a bit, but I just had to say, Fate, wait until you see Season 5. Absolutely awesome! The best season so far, I think.

To get a bit back on topic, I definitely agree with Melancholy Spirit. That is how I manage to get through life without suffering from depression or being overly cautious (though some would say that is a bad thing, especially now that I have a family).
I do fully intend to enjoy my life and have it last as long as possible, but the only way I can properly do that is by taking things one day at a time. One of my religion teachers uses the philosophy that every day you should wake up and ask the imaginary bird on your shoulder "am I going to die today?" It is a way of accepting the inevitable, getting out of the way and out of the forefront of your mind, and then getting on with your life. While, of course, I don't actually do that, I do understand the philosophy, and essentially live it.

Update: Hence the double posting...sorry.

I just saw a new trailer for the movie, and I've decided I really want to see it still. I do agree with everything said above, that this isn't a movie to see for the acting or the story, but I DO really want to see California destroyed so awesomely!

To the point: I don't want to watch it but I probably will. I mean given, Y2K was a total fall through but either way something bad is going to happen on this day.

Either A) people will freak out and go all crazy! or B) the terrorists are going to go ape shit fiesta!

I quite verily do NOT have a death wish so, close to the holidays or not, I'm staying the f-word in doors. >_<

I can see tons of mass suicides the days before 2012 and the economy to be in a dead stand still.

I don't think anyone would go so far as to commit suicide until there were some visible signs of what was to come, some precursor to warn them of their impending doom. I guess the economy could be the catalyst...but I don't know. There are some fanatics out there, some perhaps who would be willing to do it just to prove a point or whatnot. I guess its just hard for me to imagine because I don't share their particular beliefs in it.

I don't particularly see 'tons of mass suicides' but I can see 'tons of mass murders'!

Some people really don't need all that much prompting to commit mass suicide.
I mean, when the Hale-Bop (sp?) comet passed like 10 years ago, the Heaven's Gate cult all killed themselves in hopes of hitching a ride on the spaceship which was supposedly travelling in the tail of the comet. . . really.

If some asinine reasoning as that Rolling Eyes is good enough, I assure you that something as popularized as 2012 will be more than enough to push a good number over the edge.
