Prologue

Earth is a planet that can sustain life. Plants, animals, insects; all of them shared the Earth and were nurtured by the planet. These beings undergone a slow and rigorous process called evolution, each of them trying to adapt to a new environment. Everything had a balanced cycle that went on and on and on, that is until a certain creature came about to the Earth’s surface. These creatures possessed a gift that the ones before them didn’t; a higher level of intellect. With that gift, these creatures along with the listless transformation called evolution flourished. Over long periods of time, they have progressed, conquering different trials thrown at them time and again by their mother planet. How? By skillfully utilizing whatever resources they find and masterfully crafting them into tools, they have survived. These creatures were later known as human beings, and by the time they were called a human, they were already the dominant race on the planet.

With the passing of time, humans have progressed at an incredible rate. Being innovative and having an insatiable hunger for advancement, they thought that the natural process of evolution has become too slow for them. Striving to achieve more, they devoted their efforts to the research and development of their technology. However, the more they created, the farther they were drawn apart. Where others have succeeded, many have failed. One human’s success is another’s misery. This has become the catalyst for emotions such as envy, greed, anger, and hatred. The result? War. Those who envied resorted to plunder, those who were greedy aimed for dominance, those who were angered desired vengeance, and those who hated sought destruction. These emotions and reactions have been studied and were later on known as human nature.

Even under these harsh circumstances, the humans have progressed at an even faster rate. War was indeed the driving force for human advancement. Different technologies be it social, medical, agricultural, economic and warfare all remarkably flourished because of war. It was gruesome and yet… the beings called humans walked the same path time and again for the sake of advancement and becoming superior to others. However, there was a price to superiority. Those who rose to the top became the oppressors, and those who were surpassed became the oppressed. With these ever changing times of advancement, the cycle of war could not be broken.

Countries that fell behind in the race for superiority united in an attempt to take down a single country that remained ahead of the game for a long period of time. Naturally, the more superior country felt the need to protect its existence and retaliated. Being technologically advanced in all aspects, the superior country launched a counter offensive against the united front; by using their most advanced weapon at that time, the nuclear bomb. The united countries were struck with fear and resentment by the awesome power displayed by the weapon and was forced to throw down their arms and surrender. The superior country was successful at keeping its place as the leading country and delivered a time of peace. However, that peace at the cost of countless lives was shortlived.

Those who were scarred by the war strived to match the superior country’s weapon technology and succeeded in doing so. Thus, another challenge had been thrown out and the earth was once again thrust into the vortex of chaos. Of course, the threatened country retaliated and the war that followed came to be known as the Nuclear War. Countless lives have been snuffed out from all over the world but they kept at it; launching warhead after warhead aiming to deliver the final blow to cut off the head of the snake, but it was a disaster. The scarred and damaged planet can only take so much beating from such powerful weaponry and finally succumbed to its after-effects. The nuclear holocaust, rendered the Earth Sphere severely damaged and unable to sustain life.

The human race panicked and ceased their petty squabbles and racial disputes only when they realized that there was no point in fighting anymore. The planet died and there was nothing they could do about it. Those who remained strived to pave way for their race’s survival. Focusing solely on finding a way to continue existing, they have succeeded by living underground away from all the radiation they themselves caused.

Time again played its part and passed; to a point where nobody remembers how long it took for the planet to heal. Holed underground for so long, many who have lost all hope perished and few who have held on despite the future’s uncertainty survived. These few people became the second coming of the human beings to a newly reborn Earth…

The aftermath of the Nuclear War was epic. The Earth’s surface was completely transformed. Numerous islands have vanished and only water remained. By the time the second coming of man had the ability to remap the Earth’s surface, they were surprised to find out that only two large bodies of land remained intact. With this unexpected development, the humans divided the earth into two, the Eastern Hemisphere and the Western Hemisphere. Having no means to bridge the wide distance between the two bodies of land that remained, trade is not possible at this time. Thus, people of the East and West Hemispheres devoted their time on research and development and treated themselves as the only ones who survived.

Lyrana, a peaceful country located in the Eastern Hemisphere of the globe. Rich in natural resources, Lyrana has prospered over the years under a democratic government. Through modern industrialization, life was good and the people were happy and content in Lyrana. If anyone wanted to live in peace and prosperity, Lyrana is without a doubt, a country where they should go. “A Dream come true.” For the people of Lyrana, without a shadow of a doubt, that is certainly the best words to describe life in their country. At this point in time, Economy is Lyrana’s primary strength. People devoted themselves into economic improvement and culture, living their lives with no worries.

Viranthica, the country hailing from the Western Hemisphere had a different approach in development. In terms of resources, Viranthica thought they had plenty and devoted themselves into military improvement. Under a dictatorship rule, life in Viranthica is never easy. People were divided into three classes - Primera, Segunda, Tercera. Those of Primera class are people with strong influence while those of the Segunda class belonged to the military, Tercera class are the laborers. By the time people of Viranthica realized that resources are scarce, it was already too late. They have devoted too much of their resources into the military and are in danger of economic collapse. Unable to resolve the problem with resources on their own, the people of Viranthica turned to the east. As a last effort to save their dying country, Viranthica used whatever is left of their resources to create the Ressureccion. A giant cost efficient trade-ship capable of flying at hypersonic speeds and bridged the distance between the Eastern and Western Hemispheres.

The first meeting between Lyrana and Viranthica was a success. Though the people of Lyrana were surprised that their visitors are well capable of traveling great distances, they were anticipating this event and knew that it was bound to happen. Lyrana warm-heartedly welcomed their guests to their humble country. Viranthica wasted no time and made a quick analysis of Lyrana, they immediately knew that they were far superior to Lyrana in terms of technological advancement however, Lyrana far surpasses them in economic success. Coming to the east will no doubt save their dying country.

Wasting no time, Viranthica began trade negotiations with Lyrana. In exchange for a part of Lyrana’s resources and economical methods, they promised Lyrana a part of Viranthica’s technological know-how. Seeing it as a beneficial deal for both countries, Lyrana accepted and provided Viranthica with resources in exchange for technological guidance. Mankind again stepped into the platform of advancement. For years the two countries shared a mutual trade relationship and both countries prospered. Thanks to Lyrana’s resources, Viranthica was able to stabilize its economy and steadily progress. On the other hand, with the help of Viranthica’s technology, Lyrana successfully increased their economical prosperity to new heights and at the same time rapidly advanced in technology.

As time passed, Lyrana had finally managed to grasp the basics of technological advancement. Thanks to Lyrana’s natural wealth, they were easily able to fund research in different Viranthican technologies seeking ways to improve or create new technology from the existing. This act allowed Lyrana to take a step forward hence, the birth of Lyrana technology came forth.

Lyrana’s success however, struck fear into the heart of Viranthica’s leader. They now see the country of Lyrana as a threat to Viranthica. Fearing that Lyrana will take a giant leap ahead of them, Viranthica decided to cut off all ties and sever their mutual trade relations with the Eastern country. The displeased country of Lyrana immediately knew the reason behind the Western country’s sudden change of heart. Fearing for the worst, Lyrana wasted no time and began improving their military strength. They were right to do so, for they knew the old saying “One man’s success is another’s misery” all too well.

It was only a matter of time until Viranthica launched their first offensive against the Eastern country in hopes that they would be able to conquer it easily. Little did they know that Lyrana was already more than capable of fending for themselves. The result? Viranthica lost the first offensive. The time of peace again had ended, and another cycle of war began…

A Long Story I've been working on: MECA Empty Re: A Long Story I've been working on: MECA

Post by Yuina Thu Aug 20, 2009 12:09 pm

A Few Years Ago...

Lyrana - Month of Libra, Day X2, Year 3108, Li Yen Village, Time: 14:00.

Sudden winds blew harshly followed by a loud noise under the clear sky where a young boy had been enjoying play time in the remote village of Li Yen. The boy stopped chasing after his ball and slowly looked up. To his surprise, the cause of the harsh wind and loud noise was a fleet of the Lyrana Army flying slowly overhead. His eyes widened at the sight of numerous airships, cruisers, fighter planes, and the pride of the Lyrana Army; the Skybase. What the kid saw with his own two eyes, there was only one word that came to his mind at that moment to describe all of it… amazing.

One by one the elder people of Li Yen village came out of their houses to see for themselves; their country’s army is going out to battle. Some of them had loved ones in the service, some others just wanted to look at the fleet, most of them paid their respects, some prayed their prayers, and there were some of them who just didn’t care. But one thing is clear, amongst all the people in the village, the boy was the only one who thought of it as a sight to behold at that particular moment. Of course, the boy can’t be blamed. He knew little about war, so little it was close to not knowing anything at all. But hey, sometimes not knowing is a blessing.

Lyrana - Month of Libra, Day X2, Year 3108, Sea Border - Ru Eld Sea, Time: 16:00.

Above the cold blue waters of the Ru Eld Sea, the Skybase of the Lyrana Army powerfully held its position. Inside the base, thousands of men have been preparing for this very moment, a chance for them to show their valor and serve their country for a cause. They were being invaded, a threat to their sovereignty and their very existence. Though a lot of them are not happy about how things are playing out, threats like these should be dealt with accordingly. An invasion is an act of war against any country. Therefore, the country’s army must defend its territory at all costs and any means necessary. The stage for the clash of powers between the Lyrana Army and their invaders are set. It was only a matter of time.

Skybase Bridge

“Commander sir!”
“What is it?”
“Satellite images show that the Viranthica Army is approaching S point.”
“Is it their main fleet?”
“Affirmative sir! It’s their main fleet.”
“So our intel proved to be correct this time… good. Take us to Alert 1.”
“Roger that sir, raising Skybase status to Alert 1.”
“When is the estimated time of arrival?”
“17:00 hours sir.”
“Look alive men! These waters will witness quite a fireworks display…”

One of the Skybase personnel had a mystified look on his face as he stared long and hard at his long range radar monitor.

“Sir!”
“What is it now?”
“There’s an unidentified unit flying towards our location at Mach 10!”
“What?! Where is it from? What is it? Track its origin now!”
“Satellite images show that it came from the Viranthica Army sir!”
“A missile?!”
“No sir! The readings are different…”
“What’s the ETA?!”
“… any second now sir!”

As the commander looked outside the thick Di-Crystal glass window of the bridge, he saw a single spec of bright light, bright enough to be mistaken as a small sun. The only difference from the actual sun was that, this one is headed their way.

“Raise our shields to maximum output now!”
“Shields online! Impact in 5…4…3…2…1”

A large explosion engulfed the front of the Lyrana Skybase just as the light hit them. People inside experienced a tremor close enough to be described as one hell of an aerial earthquake. For something as huge as their Skybase to be shook so easily after taking a single hit; the commander knew that their enemy had developed a new technology and allowed them to see it firsthand. The first shot in this confrontation has been fired.

“Curses! What was that thing!? Damage report!”
“Our shields took the brunt of the attack, all systems green sir… we’re fine!”
“What about our shields?!”
“Still at 90% output and recharging commander… we’re still good sir!”
“Strong enough to reduce our shield’s effectiveness by ten percent from a single one of those…”
“Commander! Multiple hits on radar! It’s the same thing from earlier!”
“What?! How many!?”
“It’s a… It’s a hail sir!”

Fear is everywhere; it just needs a trigger to be pulled for it to surface. One can easily spot fear in another person by looking directly in their eyes. The old commander of the Skybase now had a few seconds to ease the fear that had taken over the hearts of his men.

"Stand your ground people! We will not lose this war! If we falter now, then all that our country has worked for will be for naught! There's no point in worrying about our loved ones back at home for if we lose now, WE LOSE OUR HOME! Full speed ahead! Keep the shields raised and scramble the fighters! Let's take this fight to them!"

His men, revitalized by his short speech found new courage. For Lyrana, they marched forward against the hail of destructive power that blocked their path.

~Chapter I~

Episode 1: Home once more

Lyrana – Month of Scorpio, Day X1, Year 3121, Li Yen Village

Li Yen village, this will be my first visit home after five years since I joined the Lyrana military. A cool breeze from the mountain side that I knew well brushed across my face and hair. I instinctively closed my eyes and took a deep breath, the scent of home; nothing could be more soothing than this. Dressed in the standard Lyrana military uniform, I walked down the seemingly unchanged dirt path that reminded me of how I used to chase after my ball that would, more than occasionally tumble down this very same path when I was but a child. The memories flooded my mind and the nostalgia it brought with it pulled my lips into a faint smile. I have been away for so long indeed, it’s good to be home.

My eyes wandered as I made my way further down the path leading into the village entrance. I was looking for a specific tree where I had placed a mark before I left the village to join the military. For some reason, my heart was beating fast. As soon as I laid eyes on the tree that I was searching for, my legs suddenly refused my wish to continue walking forward. A part of me was screaming to remember something from before I left. A flock of chirping birds flew overhead followed by another cool breeze that blew past me. That helped me regain control of my legs and allowed me to walk forward to where the old tree stood. Again, I noticed that my heart is beating even faster now. As the tree trunk slowly became clearer to my eyes, I noticed the mark that I immediately recognized, a heart that I carved with my knife along with a certain friend of mine before I left Li Yen. I reached out and gently brushed the mark with my left hand. It was unchanged, the sight of it made me extremely happy.

“Does that mark mean anything to you soldier?” A female voice asked in a rather unfriendly tone.

Surprised at the sudden question that was thrown at me and made me feel like I was compelled to answer, the stream of thoughts running in my mind was disrupted. Without facing the person inquiring, I cleared my throat and answered.

“Yes it does actually…” I said.
“Ugh! Like someone from the military would understand the true meaning behind those markings! Tell me soldier, are you here to take away more people to join the military?” She interrogated.

Now that I have heard her voice again, she began to sound awfully familiar. There is only one person in Li Yen village that had a spunky attitude like this lady asking me had for an outer shell. It was non-other than my childhood friend Neesha. Finally, I had felt my lips form a genuine smile after a long and harsh five years in the military.

“I’ll come back to you. If you ever get tired of waiting for me, you can let me know by breaking this heart that I’ll carve here. Does that mean anything to you?” I asked.

The lady who was earlier questioning me fell into speechlessness. The sound of wind blowing accompanied by the children’s laughter and rustling leaves gently played in the atmosphere. I closed my eyes and enjoyed a little bit of the teasing I was doing to my childhood friend. However, it was Neesha who broke the silence first.

“It can’t be… is that you Luke?” she asked, her voice now soft and shaky.

I removed my hat and finally revealed my face to her. Neesha was wearing a pale sky blue dress that accentuated her long and silky-straight indigo hair. She was carrying a basket of Li Yen blue flowers; seems like she had gone up the mountain foot to pick them. I instantly remembered that Li Yen blue was her favorite out of all the flowers that bloomed around the village. I looked at her and gave her the best smile that I could.

“I’m home Neesha…” I whispered but knew that she understood me.

The expression on my childhood friend’s face immediately gave her away. I knew that she could not believe what her eyes are seeing now. Of course I cannot blame her, five years has been too long a time that we have been apart. But still, I was glad that the marking I carved on this tree was unchanged within that span of time. Why did I say that? Because it simply meant that Neesha had not given up hope that I will someday come back. On the verge of tears, Neesha dashed down the dirt path not caring about spilling her Li Yen blue flowers along the path as she ran towards me.

I knew what was going to happen next. I readied my legs for a quick jolt and steeled my arms as if I was going to combat. In this path, there existed a certain rock that had always given my childhood friend a lot of knee injuries back in those days. And I just happen to have seen that even the troublesome rock managed to stay intact. It was only a matter of time now; I counted down from five to one before lunging forward with arms ready to catch a fall.

“Ahhhhh!!” Neesha yelled.

She fell, it was inevitable. Of course, to my friend, it was again the rock’s fault. It was a good thing that I had anticipated her falling and caught her in my arms before she suffered yet another catastrophic disaster. She held on to my arms until she had regained her balance and composure.

“Clumsy as ever, are you alright?” I asked with a light chuckle.
“I’m fine! That stupid rock!” She hissed.

With a blush on her face, Neesha looked at the rock with hateful eyes. If I had to imagine what the rock would say, it would be something like “hey! It’s not my fault if you didn’t see me!” Watching my friend all pissed off like that reminded me of the good old times when I was not yet in the military. When we were younger, she used to cry all the time after getting tripped by that same rock more times than I could remember. The hard part was; I had to squeeze through thick bushes just to fetch beryl mint leaves to treat her wounds which in turn, always left me with a few scratches on myself which would be the reason why she would stop crying.

I chuckled lightly and caught her attention. She was not angry anymore and looked at me with a bright gleam in her brown eyes, an indication that she is happy. I smiled at her in return and began picking up her Li Yen blue flowers that got scattered in the earlier near-fall incident. She put down her basket and helped me collect the rest of it. After picking up the scattered flowers, I dusted off my hands and picked up her basket. She looked at me as if meaning to ask a question.

“What is it?” I asked first.
“Uhm Luke, are you going to stay for a while?” she finally asked.

It was a question which I didn’t want to think about at this moment. I knew the answer but I did not want to spoil my long awaited homecoming. I walked forward slowly to the village’s entrance with Neesha walking beside me still waiting for my answer.

“I guess for a couple of days. If I’m lucky, I might get to spend a week here. That is, IF I’m lucky.” I finally answered.
“I see…” She said trailing off.

I had the impression that she thought I had left the military for good and decided to come home. Deep inside my heart I wished that it was the reality, but reality is, we are still at war with Viranthica and the services of people like me are still needed by our country. It was still not my decision if I should leave the military. I looked at her from the corner of my eye and noticed that the gleam in her eyes from earlier had vanished. It pains me to see that I have saddened my childhood friend. Using my free hand, I held her soft and tiny hand – compared to mine and squeezed it gently.

“Hey Neesha, you know what I could really use right about now?” I asked.

With a puzzled look, she lifted her head and met my eyes with her own.

“I could surely use a lot of your home-made honey-filled sweet bread. Oh how I missed those a lot!” I said with a wide smile.

Neesha’s facial expression changed from a little sad to a somewhat happy expression.

“You know Luke; I stopped making those for quite some time now. I wonder if I’m still good at it.” She said not taking her eyes off mine.
“Oh come on, you’re not just good at it, you’re the best! I know that will never change. Even though the Lyrana Army is treating me well, their food just can’t compare to your home-made cooking!” I said and even widened my smile.
“Is that so?” She asked with a hint of disbelief in her tone.
“Of course I’m telling the truth! Say Neesha, why did you stop making those anyway? They were really good you know.” I said.

She remained quiet for a while and her smile grew a little faint. I raised an eyebrow non-verbally urging her to answer.

“That’s because the only person who I ever make them for left this village to join the military. That’s why.” She finally answered.

Stunned. That’s what I was after hearing the reason my childhood friend stopped making that unbelievably tasty honey-filled sweet bread.

“Wow! I’m really lucky aren’t I? Well then, I’m here now right? So please Neesha, make them for me again! I really missed your cooking.” I pleaded.

Neesha was looking pleased now after hearing me pleading for her to cook for me.

“Yes you are lucky! But, if you like my cooking that much, then I guess it can’t be helped… Fine, I’ll make them for you. But you’ll have to wait!” She said with a stern voice.
“Yes! Thank you Neesha, you’re the best!” I said and suddenly hugged her.

She was surprised but returned my gesture and hugged me back. It is so good to finally be home. We walked for a couple more minutes inside the village greeting old friends and acquaintances while sharing stories of our experiences during the time we were apart. So much to catch up on and so little time, even though we were walking slow, we were bound to reach our destination which would be Neesha’s house.

“And here we are princess, your humble abode.” I said and bowed down.
“Thank you for walking me home Luke. Will you come by for dinner?” She asked.
“Definitely! I wouldn’t pass up the chance to say hi to your parents and eat your lovely cooking.” I said with a wide grin.
“You never changed Luke. I’m glad you’re still the Luke I knew and grew up with.” She said getting all emotional.
“Hey now, that’s not like you to get all mushy on me. Looks like you’re the one that changed.” I said raising an eyebrow taking on an inquisitive look.
“Y-you think so?” She asked.

I raised my right hand and gently placed it on her head while blurting out “hmmms” and “ahas”.

“That I do. Come to think of it, you’ve grown taller.” I said.

Neesha’s eyes flickered with light. Without any words conveyed, I knew that she was asking me to continue.

“…and you’ve gained weight.” I continued.

The instant I finished my sentence, I swear I saw a nerve swell on Neesha’s forehead. I didn’t understand why but I just told her what my observant eyes noticed with all honesty in my heart. What followed next was something I unintentionally asked for, Neesha’s swatter slap. Her hypersonic palm landed squarely on my right cheek emitting a sharp slapping sound. Five years, after all that time I spent training in the military I still couldn’t see it coming!

“Idiot!” she yelled.

With my brains temporarily electrified and my hearing clouded by a similar sound emanated by a tuning fork, Neesha left where we stood with dull angry footsteps heading to her house. As soon as she disappeared from my field of vision behind her doors, a loud wooden slam followed. Only then have I realized that I have ultimately succeeded in pissing her off, like the way I used to back in the good old days. I was left standing alone out front of her house to bathe under the heat of the late morning sun. The people who saw the earlier swatter slap incident could not help but laugh after seeing two childhood friends reunite in such a cute and not to mention painful way. I took a deep breath and laughed it off myself.

“It’s not like you’ve gained a lot of weight though. If I were to seriously answer how you’ve changed, I would say that you have become very attractive Neesha…” I muttered to myself trailing off.

A Long Story I've been working on: MECA Empty Re: A Long Story I've been working on: MECA

Episode 1: Home once more

“Is that how you really see her my child?” An old voice asked from behind.

Why do people have a habit of creeping up behind me without my knowledge! Nonetheless, it was a voice that I would never forget. I turned around and saw the old lady looking at me with a warm and gentle smile. She was carrying a basket of what looked like cooking ingredients.

“Grandma, you heard what I just said?” I asked and walked forward to help her carry the basket.
“I just did. I may be old but my six senses are working just fine. If that’s how you really see her, why not tell it to her honestly instead?” She asked teasing me.

We both walked down the road heading to one of the places that gave me the most comfort, home sweet home.

“She’d never take me seriously grandma, I used to tease her a lot when we were kids; I mean, I can’t even remember how many times I’ve made her cry.” I said followed by a half-hearted laugh.
“Times change my child, people change. You said you used to make her cry a lot didn’t you? Well, don’t you think it’s about time you made her smile?” She asked yet again, another of her riddle questions.

But what she really meant isn’t all a blur to me anymore, unlike when I was still a fledgling under her care.

“I don’t know about that grandma…” I answered trailing off again.
“Why not? Both of you are of the right age now and you’ve known each other since you were kids. You get along just fine, and both of you look good together. These old eyes of mine see no problems with that.” She said again using her teasing tone.

I looked down the road where we walked on after realizing where my grandma was taking our conversation. She too wanted me to quit the military and live a peaceful life; that much I understood. If only things were not so complicated, I would have given up the military long ago. But after seeing our country’s situation firsthand, something in me burned with inextinguishable might. There had been a saying in Lyrana’s Army from one of the fearless commanders back in the years; it has been going around the boot camp inspiring courage even before I joined the military. I believe Commander Falker was his name, and according to him: “There’s no point in worrying about our loved ones at home for if we lose now, we lose our home.”

I stopped walking and looked around the sunny village of Li Yen; it was only then that I truly realized how good it felt to have a home. Satisfied with what I saw, a single thought came into my mind. I do not want to lose my home.

“My child, you’re still young. Honestly speaking Luke, I don’t want to have to endure another loss within the remaining life I have left in me.” grandma said in a soft spoken manner.

I released a soft pent up sigh and smiled at my loving grandmother. She only wanted the best for me but what I wanted was the best for them too. And that would be peace, that is why I have to keep fighting, so that one day, I can sit back and enjoy peace while saying that somehow, I have done my part.

“Ahh forgive this old lady my child, I know that you are old enough and know what you are doing but I just can’t help but worry.” She said followed by a serene smile.
“You don’t have to worry grandma, you and the military taught me well. I’m pretty sure I can endure even tougher challenges and somehow make it through them.” I said with confidence.
“Then I am satisfied. If that is the case then come, let this old lady fix a nice meal for her grandchild.”

I followed my grandmother to our unchanged house in Li Yen village. Everything felt so right at the moment. I might as well enjoy it while I can.

Episode 2: Hermes unit shot down!

Lyrana – Month of Scoprio, Day X1, Year 3121, Lyrana Military Outpost, Anticea City

Base Command, the place where specific orders are issued to the military personnel of the base, the sounds of multiple computers humming and panel keys being pressed all orchestrated a busy environment. The different monitors inside are all lit up and showed statistics of the base and other less specific yet important data. Of all things to notice, the people inside shared a heightened tension as they were gathered around one of the computer stations in the room. Being more specific, the people were anxiously gathered around Fleet Monitoring.

Amongst the people gathered, one stood out. She was dressed in an officer’s uniform, young and intelligent looking. One of the staff officers handed her a piece of paper still warm after coming out of a console printer. She finished what seemed like an urgent transmission and after that, pressed a button on her headset which caused the mouthpiece to retract. She then took the paper and analyzed it with squinted eyes.

“Ma’am, this is the image you requested taken by one of our reconnaissance units near L Point.” said the staff officer.
“What is this? I can’t make anything out of it. Get me another snapshot.” She inquired and ordered.

The staff officer that handed her the paper replied to her question with a blank expression followed by a shoulder shrug.

“I’m sorry ma’am but I have no idea what that is either and, that is the only snapshot image the onboard camera one of our Fenryrs took and successfully transmitted before getting shot down.”

The female officer took another look at the image she held in hand. It was impossible to make out anything but thinking outside the box; the female officer began to see something that surprised her.

“Don’t you think it resembles a human form?” She inquired.
“No Colonel I don’t. According to the last transmission received from Hermes unit before they got wiped out was that, it was an unidentified aircraft. And that image is really of bad quality.” the staff officer answered.
“This image was transmitted just before the Fenryr got destroyed right? And I assume you have tried all means to enhance the image correct?” she asked.
“Yes ma’am that is correct.”
“Very well, you may return to your post.” The female Colonel said.

Lyrana Army’s Hermes unit; comprised of Fenryr reconnaissance planes got attacked in L Point where they were assigned to patrol not an hour ago. What was known so far was that the attacker was an unknown unit that gave off an unknown IFF signal, and that’s it. But it was a serious matter because L Point comes after two defensive borders. If the unknown unit showed up there, that could mean that it has successfully slipped through the defense lines. The female Colonel filed the image and called for the attention of the communications officer.

“Inform Tyr Unit that they will sortie in fifteen and will be briefed once airborne.” She ordered.

The communications officer returned to his post and began relaying the colonel’s orders. The Colonel on the other hand, took a seat in her desk and analyzed the image she had again. There’s something about that image that doesn’t feel right to her. Just as she was piecing together possibilities about the thing on the image, the communication panel on the right side of her desk beeped. The Colonel pressed a red button and a holographic screen appeared revealing the face of someone who emanated superiority. It was Lyrana Army’s Major General.

“Colonel Reign, any news about the incident in L Point?” he asked.
“Unfortunately, nothing as of yet save for the last image transmission from Hermes unit sir.” She answered.
“And what of the image Colonel?” the Major General inquired.
“Again sir unfortunately the image quality has been severely compromised and I can’t make anything out of it. We have tried enhancing the image but to no avail sir.” She answered with a little shame.
“I see… Colonel, do you think it is a new technology developed by our enemy?” the Major General asked once more.
“It’s a possibility sir but I have my doubts.” The Colonel answered.
“And why is that?” asked the Major General.
“According to the data we have, the unknown unit is transmitting an unknown IFF signal. We have tried matching the IFF signal against all known Viranthican IFF’s but we didn’t have a match sir.” She answered.
“I see. I will take that assumption into account Colonel. Treat this as your top priority for now. Find out what that thing is as soon as possible.” The Major General ordered.
“Yes sir, I have already dispatched the Tyr Unit to L Point for further investigations.” The Colonel said.
“The Tyr unit…? Very well, inform me if anything else comes up.” The Major General said and terminated the transmission.

After making sure that the transmission is really over, the Colonel finally released a deep sigh that had built up due to pressure and the Major General’s intimidating tone. Her heart is still beating fast like she ran for miles non-stop.

“I should have just stayed as a lieutenant…” she said and trailed off.

Just as she was about to go back to try and figure out the identity of the unknown from L Point, her attention was called for by one of her staff.

“Colonel, Tyr unit is airborne and awaiting orders.” The staff informed her.

The Colonel’s eyes widened a little, although she had just mentioned it to the Major General, she had completely forgotten about Tyr unit. She felt like laughing at herself for being caught up in the Major General’s pressure field.

“Right, sorry about that. Instruct the fleet to head for L Point and patrol the area. Send them the IFF signal of the unknown and should they find it still in the area, they are authorized to shoot it down and recover whatever they can of it for data analysis.” She ordered.

Her staff didn’t fail to notice his Colonel’s tension.

“Roger that. On a side note, are you alright ma’am?” he asked.
The Colonel took a few seconds to assess herself. She was just recently promoted and still getting used to the position and already she has a top priority issue on her hands. Not to mention the expectations of those from the higher ups, the pressure on her was indeed high. All in all, she was still alright. The Colonel then smiled faintly at her staff.

“I’m fine thank you. Is there anything else?” she asked.
“Uhhm no ma’am that will be all, then I’ll inform Tyr unit of your orders. Oh by the way Colonel, there’re only three of them airborne, is that alright?” the staff asked.
“What?! Why is that?” The Colonel asked with a slightly raised tone.
“Well ma’am, Tyr unit is officially on R&R. They were the only members still on the base.” He answered.

The Colonel felt silly for not knowing her own men’s schedules and tapped her forehead lightly with a closed fist. She took a deep breath and while shaking her head sideways, exhaled to relieve a little tension. She was thankful though that Tyr unit; or whoever is left of them still answered her call.

“That will be alright, bring me Tyr unit’s roster and get me in touch with the unit commander, I’ll brief them myself.” She ordered.
“Right away ma’am” The staff said and went back to his post.
“I really have to get used to this real soon…” the Colonel mumbled.
“Ma’am, you’re already connected to Tyr unit.” her staff informed.

The Colonel then pressed a button on her headset causing the mouthpiece to slide gently in place. She cleared her throat before speaking.

“Tyr unit, this is Colonel Reign speaking, do you copy?” she asked.
“This is Captain Eluze of the Tyr unit, that’s a roger, we hear you loud and clear Colonel.” the Captain replied.
“I apologize for having to ask you guys to sortie on your day off, but this is an important matter.” Colonel Reign informed.
“Anything for a Colonel with a lovely voice, so what do you want us to do ma’am?” Captain Eluze asked.
“Is that the way to address your superior Captain?” Colonel Reign retorted.
“No need to be so uptight ma’am, we’re officially off duty.” Captain Eluze chaffed.

It took the female Colonel a moment to regain composure after a sudden surge of irritation but, being told by her men that they were officially off duty made her feel like she was asking them for a favor. The female Colonel cooled down and decided to let it slide.

“… Very well, I assume you already know of the incident in L point correct?” the Colonel asked.
“L Point? Isn’t that where our Hermes unit got iced?” Captain Eluze inquired.
“That is correct.” Colonel Reign confirmed.
“Okay ma’am I already know where this is going. You want us to hunt down who iced Hermes unit right?” the Captain asked.
“That’s affirmative. And should you manage to shoot it down, I want you to collect as much of the wreckage as you can for data analysis. Be advised that what you might be dealing with is not in our database.” The Colonel advised.
“A UFO? How many are we talking about ma’am?” the Captain asked.
“One accounted for but we are not sure if there’re more of them out there.” the Colonel answered.
“Not to worry ma’am I like my odds in a challenge. Is there anything else Colonel with a lovely voice?” Captain Eluze teased.
“Will you be fine with just two of your men?” asked the Colonel.
“With all do respect Colonel Reign; I’m sure you have seen our unit’s statistics because if you haven’t, then you would surely have called for a different unit to sortie. Don’t worry ma’am, Second Lieutenant Trigger and First Sergeant Dodge are all more than capable men.” The Captain bragged.

It wasn’t a false claim however, it was true. Tyr unit’s statistics since the time it was formed five years ago had been very astounding indeed. Out of all the other units in the service, Tyr unit is the only one who has suffered three losses ever since their formation.

“Very well Captain, I have nothing else to say. Proceed with your mission and Godspeed.”
“Roger that Colonel, You’re gonna have to buy us drinks for this one ma’am. This is Tyr unit setting course to L Point. Over and out.” The Captain said and ended the transmission.

Episode 2: Hermes unit shot down!

Lyrana – Month of Scorpio, Day X1, Year 3121, 30 minutes from L Point

Thirty thousand feet above ground under the gleaming rays of the sun, three units pierced through the tranquil skies leaving a long trail of engine exhaust in a formation commonly known as “arrowhead”. Inside the Captain’s cockpit, nothing else can be heard save for the roaring stalwart engines of his and his wingmen’s crafts. The Captain, with soulful eyes took a quick gaze on the screen of his craft’s digital map. After noting down their bearings, the Captain steadily gripped the control stick of his craft and released a pent up sigh. There had been quite a long radio silence between him and his men. In his mind, right about now, one of them would already be asking. And he was right, it was Second Lieutenant Trigger.

“You better have a damn good reason for dragging us all the way out here on a day off Cap.” He stated.

That was the trigger being pulled killing the wall erected between conversation with him and his men. But the Captain never expected that the more calm and composed one, First Sergeant Dodge, also had a little something to say.

“Captain Sir, we are a unit right? We know something is not right. Could you at least share your thoughts to us? You’ve been quiet since we left base and THAT is suspicious. What’s wrong Captain?” he inquired.

Under his helmet, the Captain’s sad expression was somehow doused by his men’s persistent asking. But they are right, he and his men are a unit. There’s no reason for him to carry his burden alone. Just as he was about to speak, the on-board A.I. of their crafts alerted them of their distance from destination followed by a time estimate. Fifteen minutes more and they will be flying in L Point airspace. After their craft’s system prompt, the Captain took a deep breath and pulled down the communicator on his helmet.

“Alright listen up! First off, I’m sorry for spacing out on you guys in a mission. You’re right Dodge, something is wrong, but not with me. Trigger, you bet I have a damn good reason to drag you guys out here on a day off.” He said.

The impatient Second Lieutenant’s laugh echoed through their communicators.

“That’s what I’m talking about! Let’s hear it Cap.” He followed up.
“Hermes unit’s Captain was a close friend of mine…” The Captain said with a tone full of sorrow.
“I understand now… all that complacent and easy going talk earlier with the Colonel was to make sure we get the mission right Cap?” Trigger asked.
“That’s the gist of it…” the Captain replied.
“Don’t worry Captain, we’ll get that bastard. I’ll do my best!” Trigger assured with a positive tone.
“Thanks Trigger, I appreciate it.” the Captain said.
“And what of the other thing Captain, the one that is not right?” Dodge asked eagerly.

The Captain took a deep breath while staring at the clear blue skies ahead of them.

“You all know the strength of the Fenryr right?” He asked.
“Yes Captain, Fenryr is our top of the line reconnaissance craft built with our most advanced technologies combined with superior stealth, speed and mobility. It has a relatively low attack power compared to our combat crafts individually, but as one unit, they are pretty formidable sir.” Dodge answered.
“I’m impressed Dodge, you know your stuff. And by your count, how many Fenryrs do you think we have lost within the duration of this war with Viranthica?” The Captain asked again.

It took First Sergeant Dodge a few moments before he came up with an answer.

“By my count Captain, since the Fenryr began to roll out and got commissioned for service, we have not lost a single one of them only until recently…” he said.
“That’s right Dodge, by my count too that’s zero. The Fenryrs are Viranthica’s nightmare. Not only are they unable to match or surpass it technologically, their current crafts also can’t match up to it in a dogfight. Fenryrs are the reason why we have the upper hand in this war.” The Captain informed.

Trigger cleared his throat before voicing out his opinion.

“So Captain, are you saying that Viranthica had finally turned the tables with a new toy of theirs?” He asked.
“We also can’t ignore that likelihood Trigger, but what if it’s not Viranthica?” the Captain asked.
“Wooooaaah there Cap… Isn’t that a bit farfetched?” Trigger asked.

The Captain ordered his men to reduce their flight speed to give him more time to explain his thoughts before reaching L Point.

“Yes I do know that it is an absurd idea Trigger, but think about it. If it was Viranthica, then destroying our Fenryr, their dreaded nightmare would be a huge success for them right? But how come there have been no movement from their military lately? Knowing them, this is a huge opportunity for them to launch a full scale attack without fear of our Fenryr, but they haven’t done so. Why is that? ” the Captain explained.
“I see your point Cap, but it’s really hard to believe since there are only TWO countries in this earth now. Ours and Viranthica. What do you think Dodge?” Trigger remarked.
“Well… errmm… You have a valid point Lieutenant, but the Captain has an interesting insight too. It’s hard to tell whether it was Viranthica or a completely unknown force.” Dodge answered.

Trigger scoffed and raised his voice a bit.

“And I thought you have my back! Be a man and have some spine Dodge! Stick to one belief!” he jested.
“Sorry sir, in all honesty, I would like to go with the Captain’s assumption. We cannot be too careless at times like these. And judging from the current scenario, the likelihood of having a new enemy is high… terrifyingly high…” He said and trailed off.
“Alright that’s it! Dodge, you’re useless. Maybe I should pay Sword a visit and get his opinion about you huh? Li Yen isn’t that far from L Point right?” Trigger said taking his joke a notch higher.
“Sorry sir…” Dodge said getting all down.

The Captain cleared his throat and began increasing his craft’s flight speed.

“Alright boys! No more chit-chat. Dodge, can’t you tell that Trigger is just picking on you? We’re flying into L Point airspace any moment. We have no eyes in the sky so keep your own eyes peeled for that UFO. We’ll split up to cover more ground; we’re coming in from the west, Trigger! You got North, Dodge! South is yours. I got East.”
“Roger that Captain!” His men answered in chorus.

The sound of their roaring engines split off in three directions. The men, all anxious to see the culprit that shot down Hermes unit, flew their crafts over to their respective zones with wary eyes and fingers ready to pull the trigger.

Tyr unit had been patrolling the area for a few hours now and yet they haven’t found what they were looking for, the UFO. But these men remained vigilant, they searched high and low in the vicinity of L Point even though there were no signs that they would find the UFO. One of the men noticed a very familiar gauge in his control board blinking. Trigger let out a sigh of disgust and pulled down his communicator relaying a message thus, breaking the radio silence.

“Yo Cap, I’m running low on juice even though were flying on fuel save mode.” He relayed.
“All the same here Captain, my baby will not stay in the air like this for long.” Dodge said.

It was the Captain’s turn to check on his fuel reserve. He squinted his eyes in displeasure after seeing that he too was low on fuel. If they continue searching like this, they would not have enough fuel to make it to the nearest supply base.

“I hate to break it to you guys but it seems like our bogey successfully made a ru--.”

The Captain’s transmission was interrupted by a loud warning siren coming from his craft’s system. Every pilot knew what it meant, “Locked-On” to be precise.
The voice of the Captain earlier speaking through their communicators was replaced by static. Dread filled the hearts of the other men.

“Captain!!!” both of them yelled.
Trigger wasted no time and powered his craft to full thrust, destination, eastward to where their Captain was.
“Dodge! I’m going in! You head back to the nearest supply base and wait for us there!” Trigger ordered.
“No sir! I’m going with you!” Dodge rebutted.
“Damn it Dodge! Who do you think that bastard shot down?! I know you’re confident about your flying skills and hell do I respect that! But don’t you forget that in our unit, all of us can shoot you down!” he yelled.
“I don’t understand what you mean sir!” Dodge complained.
“Listen Dodge, I know we are a unit but as the next in charge, I am ordering you to withdraw. If that bastard can shoot down the captain, then there’s no doubt he can shoot you down too. I’m not taking you lightly… I just think that you’re too young to die out here on a crap mission. You have a bright future ahead of you and I want you to survive. Now get going before I shoot you down myself!” he roared.
“Y-yes sir!” Dodge answered.

“Whew! Quite a speech there Trigger! I was moved to tears…” A familiar voice echoed though their communicators.

Both men were half confused and happy upon hearing the voice.

“Captain!!” both men yelled simultaneously.
“Yes, yes I know! Too bad I ain’t dead yet right? And Trigger, last I checked, Sword would be the next in charge but hey, now that I’ve seen something remarkable about you, I might consider leaving Tyr unit in your hands.” The Captain stated followed by a chuckle.

Gritting his teeth in annoyance, Trigger let it slide for the meantime seeing as they have already found what they were looking for. He cleared his throat and spoke with a serious tone.

“So Captain, is that thing in your sights? I’m headed your way as we speak.” He said.
“Not at the moment but he’s here. Bastard shot at me from below but disappeared again, some UFO huh, this one is a ULO! By the way men, this guy is good; he barely hit me but nicked my left wing. You guys watch yourselves! I know I don’t need to remind you that we’re short on fuel. A prolonged battle would be to our disadvantage. Let’s take him out quick!” The Captain ordered.
“Roger that Captain. Dodge we’re going in!” Trigger said.

Lyrana – Month of Scorpio, Day X1, Year 3121, Lyrana Military Outpost – Anticea City

Inside one of the offices in the base, Colonel Reign had just finished reviewing Tyr unit’s roster. She closed the file and neatly placed it above her desk. After gently rubbing her eyes and stretching a little, the Colonel then took a different set of files and gave them a quick scan, searching for a particular name. She had just found out that Tyr unit still had an open slot for one more person and was particularly planning on filling the empty spot.

While it was true that there were a lot of potentially skilled pilots in the Lyrana Army, Captain Eluze seemed to have always rejected any attempt made by their last C.O. to fill that blank spot in his ranks. When their last C.O. asked if there was any particular reason why the Captain did not want a full team, Captain Eluze just gave him a very straightforward answer. He said he did not need just anybody with talent; he said he just needed someone he can trust. This made Colonel Reign wonder what kind of a man was the Captain and what does it take to earn his trust.

“Ahh here you are…” She said after pulling out a piece of paper from the stack of files she held.
“Brynhild… Cross… Yep you might be the one… I think.” The Colonel mumbled to herself.
The Colonel was just about ready to contact the person mentioned in the file when her aide suddenly knocked on her door. The sound of his knock permeated urgency.
“Ma’am, I’m sorry to disturb you but it’s about Tyr unit, they have engaged the UFO in L Point.” the aide informed.
“What?! I’ll be right there!” The Colonel said and tossed the files she held on her desk.

She immediately wore her communicator and rushed outside the door where her aide awaits.

Lyrana – L Point

One of Tyr unit’s craft made a quick nosedive followed by a sharp left barrel-roll while releasing anti-lock charges in an attempt to evade a homing supersonic speed missile on its tail. Dodge, the pilot of the craft had kept his teeth gritted the whole time releasing muffled grunts with every sharp aerial maneuver her made. For some reason, he has become their target’s prey.

“Dodge! Don’t you get shot down damn it! What is this thing?!” Trigger yelled in question.
“I’ll try sir! Get him off my tail! Urrgghh!” Dodge grunted as he pulled another evasive maneuver.

The three members of Tyr unit had never seen anything like it before, a humanoid machine in combat! The most mystifying thing about it was that it can easily adapt to different environments and still maintain an impressive machine performance! Surely, if this was Viranthica’s new toy, then Lyrana is in danger of completely losing the war.

“Get off him and fight me damn it!” Trigger yelled while firing Vulcan rounds against their target.
