I'm not a big ST fan but this could be pretty interesting, and I've seen enough to know general background. Question: what time-period is this? I'm guessing next-gen sort of era?

More the time between TOS and TNG. It's know as the Forgotten Era, since not much is known about what happened during those years, which would give the players more creative license.
