Lord Duiran having his own side plot brings butterflies to my stomach!

Really? That's awesome! Blackrock and Raptorman have both expressed interest in creating characters to go along with him, but there is always room for more if you are interested!

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Just some information concerning Lord Ragner Duiran:
Drome is on the northwestern peninsula of Mandor. It is under control of Duke Oromon, foster father of Ragner Duiran.
Ragner Duiran was given lordship over a small town on the peninsula just south of Drome. Most of his military forces have been depeleted in his attempts at killing Barthon and Co., and most of what remains are specialists and such, or those unfit for combat.
I haven't yet come up with a name for the town, so any suggestions would be appreciated. I also don't have any specifics conerncing geography, layout of the town, and population. So, again, any suggestions will be helpful.
As far as the next step in the plot, Lord Duiran may be heading home to his town (in secrecy, if possible, to avoid the wrath of the Duke), to recover from his injuries and gather a few companions. He intends to hunt down Barthon and make him pay for what he's done (which is, essentially, nothing).
Ragner knows his father likely set him up for failure, and a part of him realizes that Barthon is not to blame. But he needs to blame Barthon because, well, that is just the kind of person he is.
I'm not sure where exactly I want to go with Ragner yet. Either he will hunt Barthon down until his own death, or maybe he will finally let it go at some point. Obviously Ragner still has room for some character development.
Those are just some things I want you to keep in mind if you plan on making a character to join him. Your character doesn't even have to be distincly related to anything there. They could be from Aram, or Dor, or another unnamed city. Or even Sephalia. But if you want them to be relatively close or connected, that is all the information I have.

Thanks! This works great for a character concept I've been working on. Now I have to find time to write, which is the essential component. *laughs nervously*
Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I have a question for Kalon, whenever he decides to pop back on. I've decided to redo the whole stats thing (total word count, word count per character, word count per player, etc). But I also wanted to do what you've mentioned several times: put it in novel form. There are several issues involved with this, however. And I know it wouldn't be anything official-this is just for our enjoyment.
1. I will be changing any errors that I see. Do you want me to consult you, and all other players, before I correct the errors? I will either use my best judgement or Word's best judgement if I don't need to consult the players first. I would also like to make a uniform setting, like for the time stamps and such. Do you have a preference for what that should look like? I think all of us so far use a different format for the time stamp.
2. Should I mention each player at the beginning or end of each of their respective posts? Or should I just let them flow with eachother so that the uniformed reader would have no idea who wrote what?
3. I would like to post this somewhere so that FOG people, at least, can access it and read it in all of its glory. Do you know where I might be able to do that? A word document hosting site? Also, should I wait until Chapter 1 is completed before posting anything? Or should I just update it as we go along?
4. I think there was a four...but I can't remember now. My train of thought wrecked, and there is something from Area 51 trying to burst out of the wreckage, to the oh-so-aggravating and not-very-explanatory title of "Super 8"...
Edit: I remembered 4: Should I include the posts by players who have stated that they are no longer participating? Like Reffy and Zephiris? Neither of their plotlines are completed, nor have they progressed the overall story in any way. In a novel, that wouldn't work. But I leave that decision up to you.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I might suggest GoogleDocs to host the novel. You can give permissions to specific people to read, but not change the novel. Or give passwords to people who would have access to it to edit as you choose. I use it to write my books with my friend Matt.
As for the editing thing, you can certainly edit spelling, etc for me. You'd only have to check with me for any major changes in the spirit of the text.
Posting our names on specific portions of the story that we've written isn't a big deal to me. So long as all our names are included in the credits and movie rights.

I must not have mentioned before, but I've been keeping a running record of each post and have been putting them all in chronological order as I go. I was planning to put it in a Google document.
I don't have player names ascribed to them, but we can put in the opening credits/acknowledgments who played which characters.
Maybe I'll do that now. (I've been working on my Zelda fanfiction as well as the Character Portrait requests, so that's partly what's keeping me from finishing my Sephiris post. )

Gmail. Is. Awesome.
If you don't have one, you must. Google is great! xD
Gmail has none of the mediocrity of Windows Live, and none of the ads and hullabaloo of Yahoo. It's nice, clean, efficient, and has tons of great and useful features! ^^
Get one; make it your professional, all-purpose mail, and live the glory that is Gmail.

I'm working on my character sheet for Ragner Duiran while trying to study for my philosophy test. Hopefully I can have it up before I go to work at 3:30...
Edit: By the way, I'm in Sephchat if anyone wants to hop on.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
Here's the character sheet for my new character, Duke Cyril Omoron's (Ragner's father) Captain of Guards. He's a lovable guy, really!
Edit: I'm also half-done with Barin's next post, since I'm on some frenzy today, hopefully I'll be able to put it up before the end of the day (or in the early hours of the next, anyway ).
- Spoiler:
- Full Name: Captain of the Guards Rurik Vadren
Use Name: Rurik, Captain or Sir (the last by the men under his command)
Other: Stone-face, The Iron Bull
Played by: Blackrock
. : Appearance : .
Height and Build: 5'9, stocky and muscular
Description: A bull-necked man, with thick, short-cut, raven-black hair. A close-cropped beard runs along his wide jaw and full cheeks, covering a scar or two. His nose is short and wide and looks to have been broken once. The short forehead above it has a few deep-cut lines, most probably from a permanent frown. Behind his full lips a roll of uneven, but white and, remarkably, unbroken teeth lies. The pair of sorrowful black eyes are the only feature that stands out from his otherwise unremarkable face.
Clothing: During ceremonies or in battle, wears a full suit of plate armour, the weight of it offset by his powerful physique. It is of fine make, the work of a master, but it is neither burnished, nor coloured. His great-helm has two short horns pointing forwards, which got him the nickname The Iron Bull, although men are not foolish enough to speak it in his person. He typically wears a tabard over the the armour, bearing the colours of his liege, blue and yellow. He uses a heater shield bearing a variation of his liege's coat of arms, a blue fish with red fins on a field of yellow, for defense as well as offense. In less violent times, he uses chainmail and boiled leather. In most cases, he wears a simple yellow cloak, marking him as one of the Duke's men. Finally, when not on duty, a white shirt, black breeches and knee-high black boots is what he usually wears.
Weapons: A flanged mace, with a large head, made of high-quality steel. The handle is covered in soft, black leather for a better grip. It usually located close to his left hip, although he may sling it over the shoulder on occasion.
Other: Bears no ornaments, save for a plain silver ring on his left index finger.
Impression: Rurik has a somber air about him, he talks little and smiles seldom. Overall, he gives the impression of a to-the-point man, who would not waste time with mannerism.
. : Heritage : .
Age: 55
Birthplace: Aram
Family: Parents deceased. Has a sister and a brother living in Aram and Dor respectively. He has not contacted them in years.
Inheritance: Being born and raised in a poor family, Rurik has inherited little in terms of the material. However, his harsh early years gave him a down to earth outlook on life.
Other: Seeing as he is from the lowest social classes, he has little friends of influence. His personality makes him little liked, as such, even as a powerful man in the Duke's court, he has failed to forge any lasting relations.
. : Persona : .
Biography: Rurik Vadren was born in a big, but poor family. His father took on what jobs he could, trying his best to feed his household. His mother helped out neighbouring houses with whatever task was necessary, in an effort to bring something to the table. Rurik was the third and youngest son in the family. He spent his early years in the company of his brothers, who were known as troublemakers and got in more than a few fights. This created a strong bond between the three, who always looked out for each other. Sidor, the oldest, joined the army as soon as he came of age. In this he saw a chance to make something of himself and, hopefully, feed his family. He was killed a year later, in a skirmish with some treacherous vassal's forces. Ardin, the second son, took a different path and thanks to his long stride managed to become a messenger for a local lord. He earned enough coin to travel to Dor, the capital, securing another job as a courier there. Rurik never saw him again. In the meanwhile, the boy had begun running errands for the locals. The money earned he proudly brought to his family, oft times helping his sisters in acquiring ornaments and various garments for themselves. Linda, the youngest child in the family, was struck with a fever and died shortly afterwards. Mira was his only remaining sibling. He protected her honour from local thugs and got a broken mouth for it more than once. In time, a local merchant's son took interest in her and would have taken her as a wife. Sadly, he had a falling out with his father and departed for Sephalia where he became a mercenary if the gossip could be believed. His brother, however, a young and charming man took his place in Mira's heart. She wedded him not long after. This left young Rurik the only child in the family. This allowed his father to gather enough coin to afford some schooling for him. However, when the boy came of age some time later he decided to follow in Sidor's footsteps and joined the army, despite the protest of his parents.
Those days in Aram left their mark on Rurik's personality. They shaped his pragmatic nature and taught him that each man must do whatever is necessary to leave their mark on the world. His father was an honest, hardworking man and taught those virtues to all his children. His mother was a loyal wife, a trait which was passed on to him as well. After their last child's departure, the couple managed to eke out a good enough living, compared to before. Rurik's father took to drinking, but not so much as to ruin himself. In the end, they died in the hovel where they had lived for most of their life, as is the fate of most common folk.
In the army, it turned out that Rurik had quite the talent for fighting. He quickly picked up the things that were taught to him, learning to fight with sword and spear and axe. The weapon which drew him the most, however, was the simple mace. In time, he managed to acquire one and has rarely fought with a different kind of weapon. He performed his orders without hesitation and always to the letter. His loyalty was unquestionable, he did not once speak a bad word in regards to his superiors. Rurik's leaders recongised his talents, his determination to see the task done and his utter loyalty. But he was not a leader of men, he did not make any friends, he preferred to keep to himself. And thus, despite his skills, the young man remained a common foot-soldier for years.
All that changed when Rurik was assigned to a young lord by the name of Cyril Omoron. The noble was the ruler of the town of Dorme, a declining place, but he had plans to change that. Again, Rurik was in no place of command, he was one of the many soldiers tasked with protecting the roads and surroundings lands. In time, the town grew and started to make a name for itself, this drew unwanted attention. A group of bandits, more organised than one would assume, began raids on Drome and the lands around it. Duke Omoron set out to meet them and in a series of battles crushed most of their forces. Rurik took part in some of those battles, while others he missed out. In the end, only one of them truly mattered for him. In a last attempt to win their war, the brigands set an ambush for the Duke. He was moving ahead of his main force with a small group of men. As fate would have it, Rurik was one of those men. He was accompanying his Captain, who was invited to take a walk with the lord. Thanks to his skill at arms, Rurik was part of the Captain's personal guard. When the trap was sprung, most of the party was slain. Rurik was one of the few to survive and he fervently defended his liege-lord, the Duke. The two of them, the last survivors, managed to hold off any further attacks until reinforcements arrived. The stalwart defender was gravely injured in the battle, taking a blow in place of his lord. He missed the last days of the small war.
When Rurik awoke once more, his life had changed forever. Pleased with his service, his loyalty and skill, the Duke had made him his Captain of Guards. Needless to say, the simple soldier was amazed. He could now afford arms and armour he had only dreamed about. He had men under his command, a good salary and most of all - an important duty. True to himself, he set out to do it diligently. After he recovered from the wound, Rurik began a methodical sweep of the Guard. He removed those he deemed unfit, placed tried and tested men, loyal to the bone, much like himself. Omoron saw the merit of having such a person working for him, so he wasted nothing to please his sworn shield. That was unnecessary, for Rurik's wants were few and simple and his loyalty unmoving. This man, this Duke, had raised him from the mud and given him a place of honour, was he not worthy of dying for? Over the years, he took on various assignments from his liege, some less savoury than the others, but he carried them out unquestioningly. He is the Duke's man to this day.
Motivation: Rurik has one goal in his life - service to his lord. He would kill and die for him, without a moment of hesitation.
Skills and Talents: Rurik is a skilled fighter, proficient with the use of various weapons. However, he is a master of the mace, using it with great effect to crush and pummel opponents to the ground. Being born a simple peasant, he could not receive any education, as such he was illiterate for most of his life. Only after being recruited by the Duke did he learn to read and write, but it still comes unnaturally to him.
Strengths: He is a loyal man, without a doubt. Thoughts of treachery and betrayal are foreign to him. He is very determined and pursues every goal to its end. Rurik is also an honest man, like his father, he would not lie unless ordered. Something which can lead to deep inner arguments.
Weaknesses: Being devotedly loyal has its drawbacks - he is especially weak-willed when it comes to the Duke. He cannot refuse or disobey any command, no matter how wrong it may seem to him. Rurik is not a sociable man, he prefers his own company and the quiet of an empty room, this has left him with little friends.
Personality: Rurik is a grim person, with a dark outlook on life, he is not one for words or laughs. A sense of humour is a stranger to him, he is dead serious at all times. Overall, it can be said that he is more sword than man, he is merely the blade, unable to resist the arm that swings it.
Edit: I'm also half-done with Barin's next post, since I'm on some frenzy today, hopefully I'll be able to put it up before the end of the day (or in the early hours of the next, anyway ).

Very nice character, Blackrock. It will be interesting to see the dynamic you give Rurik in your writing.

And the post is up, although it's a lot shorter than my previous ones. At this point, however, I could not think of anything more to add and did not want to kill the pace by cheaply adding a memory or some such.
Also, Digi, do let me know if I've got the location of the Twins' camp right. I wasn't sure if it was in the forest or by the lake itself, so I went for a bit of both.

Nice post, Blackrock. I think it's completely in keeping that Barin won't trust magic users or his employer, for that matter. It's a nice touch. I was already seeing the Twin's reactions to his appearance and admonishment of not being very aware of their surroundings. *smiles.
**Edit: I wish I could remember if Stion told us to continue without him, taking his characters along or not. I seem to remember something of the sort, but cannot find any such post.

I have no idea. While I don't generally like deciding for other people, Barin is my "main character" and I will advance his story at some point. (not that I'm in a hurry)

Still working on the post. I've had the character portraits in the top spot on my priority list for a while, but this waiting for me in Sephiris is ridiculous. Something's wrong with me. Need to re-focus.
It's probably that wall that people come to when doing long projects like this. Kinda like a marathon, I suppose.
I shall persevere!
I'll try to have it done by Saturday.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
I've been rereading some posts, and I noticed something.
Barocula Lake, by rough estimation, seems to have about a 100 mile perimeter. There's no way you can walk that in half a day.
Three sizable cities border Barocula Lake.
The lake is so large that it shows up on the map.
Circumnavigating a lake like that is no afternoon stroll.
Sorry for not noticing this earlier. I think I have a scale on all the maps, so...
Actually I'm also wondering what inlet you were talking about, Digi, earlier in that post. I don't know of any inlet that leads to Barocula Lake. I suppose it could be seen that way if you're speaking of the Shadewater River delta.
If that's correct, then let's say it's 200 miles up Shadewater River, since they're not going all the way.
If they don't use magic, then they'd be using a barge and going 5 miles a day.
That's... about a month and a half.
So let's say they use the ship and with magic go 15 miles per day. That cuts the time to a third, so... about two weeks.
Maybe we could say they got a fast boat and made it in 11 days or so, but that still puts us somewhere around DAY 20.
Am I missing something? :?
How, even my magic, did they get there so quickly?
They spent the remained of that day circumnavigating the lake only discovering a few old campsites from other passing travelers. No sign, however, of the Hawks could be found.

They wouldn't have gotten around the lake in one day. They just started that process. I'll clarify that. Stion and I figured it at 10 days or so with magic, I believe.

Re: Sephiris: The Price of Peace - OOC
So, what would that be...?
From day 9, we'd have DAY 19, and then about 10 days of walking for the lake? That's day 29.
Or are you saying it's still 4 days getting TO the lake, and then 10 for the circumnavigation?
Or is it 10 altogether...?
10 days for getting to the lake is plausible, with magic.
And they could probably walk around the lake in 5 days if they hurry, without stopping very long inside the three cities.
So that's... DAY 24?
That would be good for Silvone's group, 'cause they're going to set sail to Sephalia and arrive around...
when was it supposed to be when they landed? DAY 20?
Digi and I (still waiting on me) have to finish telling how the elves and Katerina get together. They'll probably go to Telmural, right? I'm forgetting the plan already. I thought I wrote it down somewhere, but I'm not sure...
Anyway that should take us into the 20's, so we might even cross paths with Silvone's group. ^^
Edit:
The twins probably won't have to circumnavigate the lake for very long. The Hawks would have gotten there first and have probably been staying at one of the cities (probably the northernmost one).
We could say it only took three days for the twins to get from the south side to almost the north side, where the scouts would have found them.
If we go with that, then their meeting might be as early as DAY 22.
Edit Edit:
I should finally make a beastiary.
So far we have Gryphons, Yellowjacks, and Skabs.
Skabs sound like really cool creatues! xD
Also, have I made the changed to the map yet? I think I did.
I still have to add Drôme and... Sir?... to the map as well.

Also, have I made the changed to the map yet? I think I did.
I still have to add Drôme and... Sir?... to the map as well.

Yeah, I hadn't planned on the Twins getting all the way around the lake before running into Barin's group. So that works for me.
We'll have to check with Blackrock to see if the new time table works for him.

Yeah, that's fine. The Hawks could have arrived in Ashwood on DAY 15, In the next week, they would be waiting for the Twins to arrive, Barin would no doubt have posted scouts to lead them to his camp. Right, all that means I'll have to radically change my last post, which I won't be able to do until the end of the week (I'm writing for Rurik, plus busy RL). So yeah, bear with me.

No problem. Sorry my post hasn't come yet. We're doing the grand reopening of the library where I work in two days, and I've gotten a lot of sub time helping out to get everything ready before the 5th.
Awesomely, I'm not working that day, so I'm going as a patron. xD

OK, my post is coming along. I don't think I'll need to worry about the time your characters are in, since I'm still in DAY 8.
Not for long. ^^

I still need to finish Ragner's Character Sheet...and I don't think I will post until after Blackrock's Rurik post. I will also be gone over the next week, son don't expect much activity from me here. Sorry

I was on a short trip to Venice, so haven't had the time to write, I'll pick up the pace and hope to finish with both Rurik's AND Barin's amended post by the end of the weekend. Fingers crossed.

Yep, Venice, Italy. Was good fun, but ouch...it's hard on the pocket, if you know what I mean. The good thing is, you can check out most of the city in about a day, plus half a day more for some of the islands.
Sorry for the delay, but I've been having this splitting headache, which is not willing to cooperate with me. Add to that the heat, seriously I feel like its at least 45 °C at the moment. Right now, I'm more in the mood for writing some twisted, psychological horror, than a traditional fantasy work.
I'm working on it though, have no fear (will be done with Rurik first).
