To show you around, I'd say first check out the rules and then browse the interest check areas of the type of role-play you prefer to explore first, and either post in one or post one of your own. Next comes an OOC, where all the out of character, behind-the-scenes stuff goes. Then the RP goes up and awesomeness ensues!
We also have a fun area for all things non-RP-ish, places to display written works or art, forum games, all that good stuff. And of course if you have any questions, do feel free to ask.

I'm also sort of confused - why do RPs here seem to follow like story line, and they end and there's a hall of fame and stuff? The site I usually RP on, RPs could go on forever and ever and ever, if they didn't die because of people's inactivity or something.

There's a hall of fame for any RP that ever finishes because it's rare and glorious for a role-play to finish with a complete storyline before dying out.

I believe the difference might be that RPs here tend to be more plot-driven. The folks that start RPs usually have a set story in their head and they want to see what players can do with it. So many RPs have a set 'chapter' or even 'book' feel to them. If they're successful and actually complete a story line, then those same players might continue with another plot line in the same world.

Yeah, I love RPing, I love writing in general, I really want to become an author. I think this site is really going to push my limits on how well I can write and will help me to advance in my writing as well

The Interest Check thing is really different. I'm so accustomed to filling out a form and jumping right into RPs that I'm not used to all of this planning, and because of it I haven't been able to join any RPs yet... :S

What you're used to sounds more like our OOC threads, where you put your character sheets and the background info. During that stage, you do just fill out the form and jump in. ^_^
Sometimes people put their OOC in the role-play itself, but we don't allow that here, so it all goes in a separate thread.

The idea is to have all the in-character prose flowing seamlessly so anyone reading it doesn't have to wade through a bunch of

*Nods* Yeah, I'm used to putting random OOC: pieces into role plays. So in the OOC threads, do you role play there too? That wouldn't make sense, since OOC is out of character... Wait... whaaat?

The interest check is for looking for people who may want to role play a general idea with you. Once you find those people, create an OOC where you put up the plot, setting, characters and whatever else you might want. You use this OOC to talk to the other people in your RP, for example announcing you will be absent, asking someone to write in a certain line, or whatever else you might need to say. The IC is strictly for the story. Nothing else should go there except the story.

Welcome to FoG, Warriorcat! I'm glad you're getting used to the site, and it sounds like the others are doing a great job answering your questions. Regarding the Caligo character sheet, that's specifically for RPing in the Caligo world. If you check the "FoG in Caligo" tab at the top of the main page, it explains the entire backstory and setting of that RP world. Sadly, we haven't had too many Caligo RPs, so if that strikes your fancy, feel free to post an interest check and start something!
