My Little Pony Craze
Has anyone else noticed the My Little Pony craze that seemed to have sprouted up recently? I noticed a huge influx in MLP art on the front page of deviantART lately (since I browse that on a near-dairly basis). There's all kinds of new My Little Pony fan art that gets really popular. I'm not sure if something happened fairly recently in regards to My Little Pony or if it just somehow caught on and is becoming a big fad. It's cute, and I loved the show as a kid, but I was just wondering where it's all coming from. Does anyone know? Was it because of some viral video or something? I'm so confused!
Re: My Little Pony Craze
Fate, this craze is inspired by My Little Pony-Friendship is Magic.
It's a new version of My Little Pony. The art is more modern and it's got a completely new storyline. I was a bit leery of it at first because it reminded me of Bratz, but it's actually surprisingly good. The characters are individuals and very well established, and they're not stereotypical like I had also been expecting. They've also tied in a few things here and there from the original, which is a nice touch for someone like me, who adored the show as a child. (For instance, the first few lines of the theme song are the same as the original, and they've brought back Spike, though he looks and sounds completely different [yet so much more adorable].)
It's a series of episodes that, after watching episode one, you probably wouldn't have to watch in order, but I have so that I don't miss any. They're all available on YouTube, which is awesome. =)

Re: My Little Pony Craze
Also, 4chan got a hold of it and has been working like mad to make memes about it. Know-your-meme on youtube claims that they were so popular over there that they banned ponies, which caused another 4chan-like site to be created that featured ponies. you may have seen pictures of ponies with the caption "20% cooler", which is "ponychan's" slogan.
(Note: 90% of 4chan is 12-13 year old boys, despite what they claim to be)
Aside from that, my knowledge about it is fairly limited. I can respect anime and even some western cartoons, but I'm not sure why it has the hype it does. It's made by the same people who made power puff girls, so it probably is a good show. But "this" good?
I'll also put out there that I also watched the original when I was much younger, I'm not sure how I'd react to a re-make.

Oops, why on Earth did I post this in the General section? My brain has been mush today, I swear. Thanks to whoever moved this.
Ahhh, is that it? Wow, I never knew about this! Thanks for explaining it, you two, and for the link to the show on YouTube, Lara. I think I'll check it out, see how it is. It's interesting they did a remake. I'm not sure I'd be able to get as into it as so many people seem to be though.
Oh, 4chan. I'm not overly familiar with the site, but I've heard all kinds of things. I guess a lot of what gets big starts there though.
It's random and kind of funny and...traumatizing lol, but an occasion I specifically recall watching My Little Pony was when I was a young kid and spending the night at a friend's house. I was probably in kindergarten, and it was one of the first times I spent the night at anyone else's house. It was late and she and I were watching My Little Pony on VHS in the living room, and her screen door opened and closed. She told me that sometimes people broke in and was freaking me out. Then we suddenly had to get up and run outside, since she convinced me frantically that her older brother was home and was coming after us with a knife! I was terrified, since I grew up in a friendly, safe, warm family and neighborhood, and I didn't know not to trust the girl.
So we fled outside, and she kept yelling that he was coming, and I climbed her fence and ran all around trying to get away from her older brother whom I later found out was not even home. After all that, I couldn't sit back down to watch My Little Pony. I was so shaken up and told her mom that I wanted to call my mom and go home. I'm not sure if I ever explained what happened there to my mom or even to her own mother. I'm sure that girl grew up to have a lot of issues.

It's a stupid 4chan meme/fad, nothing more, nothing less.
The reason it's so popular is because it's so "leik omg LOL so randumb."

Re: My Little Pony Craze
Do NOT let Chainlinc3 catch you saying that, Nation. In fact, I expect him to show up in just a couple posts.
My Little Pony is actually quite a good show. It's...interesting, and the fans have latched on to it and will not let go. The animation is a lot better than the original show was, and also Pinkie Pie does not sound like a man anymore.
But yeah. Fans. Fans are the whole reason for the show's popularity. Just look up 20% cooler and suddenly...ponies.

Re: My Little Pony Craze
HOW HAVE I NOT SEEN THIS YET?
Alright, I could literally fill pages upon pages about MLP. To me, it is honestly the best cartoon that has come along in a very very long time. And it's not popular because it's random.
The original 4chan group that got ahold of it liked it for its irony. Majority of 4chan users are male. Not all, but most, and the irony of them genuinely enjoying a little girl's show set them flooding. Eventually there was this whole miniature war going on, and bronies began to get banned from the site itself. The new fan group phenomenon now know as 'Bronies' stuck together and thus formed their own sites, blogs, forums, and groups. From them came Ponychan, Ponibooru, and the vastly loved Equestria Daily. Please not, these are only the biggest sites in the brony fandom.
We've also gotten our hands on many noteworthy people, including Stephen Colbert[link] [link] and Seth Green [link]. There's speculation on this list also including Lady Gaga and Weird Al Yankovic. Internet artists such as Yamino, author of Sister Claire, Gisele LeGace, creator of comics Eerie Cuties, Magick Chicks and Menage a 3, and creator of Least I Could Do, Ryan Sohmer. Adult Swim has also made its own brony shoutouts. [link]
As for the fandom itself, it is primarily men of the ages 14-35. Women are becoming more prominent in the fandom, becoming more and more knows as Pegasisters. Some, like myself, are more fond of the term 'brony' for themselves as well. Beautiful things have result from the fandom, ranging from music to art.
The show itself has animators that have worked on Ed, Edd n' Eddy, Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, Dexter's Laboratory, Samurai Jack, and came from the same minds that spawned The Powerpuff Girls, including the brilliant Lauren Faust.
I love My Little Pony. With a burning passion, I love it. It has taught me more about loving my fellow man than any religion ever has. So, unto all of you, I say 'May Celestia be with you.'
Let me know if have any questions. ;3

I have no knowledge of the show personally. However, it has recently been mentioned in cracked.com with this article The 4 Most Unexpected Fan Bases in Pop Culture, which has some decent info on the whole thing.

Re: My Little Pony Craze
I'm not really sure what to say here.
I thought there must be some magical thing about this reinvented My Little Pony cartoon for it to become so widely known. So I watched it. And I watched every single episode (and got made fun of by Axiom lol). And I still found nothing worth watching. I don't know if I'm missing something here or what. I'm so very confused.
Sure, if I had some children, I wouldn't mind letting them watch the show. As for me though, I could not find any sense of pleasure or joy watching it. My nostalgia didn't even kick in, since it's so very different from the My Little Pony of my childhood.
I guess I just don't get it. I'm sorry.

WHAT?! You don't get it?! How do you not get it?!
Seriously though... It's a cartoon for kids that has been around since the early 80's. From a male perspective, it's not any more awesome now than it was back then. I wouldn't have called myself a "bronie" when I was 5 and that hasn't changed.
I don't take anything away from the show as far as it's teachings on moral perspectives. I think for kids, it's probably a great show. However, I find the adult, male following to be strange.

Re: My Little Pony Craze
I think it was just picked up by a very strange fan base of teenagers (and much older folk) which caused it to become a strong meme in the last few months. I know a MANY few people that call themselves "Bronies", and Chain has definitely tried to make me watch the show too. I say let the people have their Ponies, maybe it'll keep them away from Krystal for a while. XD
However, I MUST say, the My Little Pony: Drinking is Magic drinking game is very well done. Fun to play if you know a Bronie or twelve. >_>

My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is amazing. It's my favorite things to watch on Saturday mornings! The storyline and animation is just some of the good parts.

Also, teenagers who are fans and are able to draw, like to draw their own fan-based characters, and the "mane six," as well. I don't watch the show, nor would I call myself a fan of it. It's just everywhere enough to where I get the gist and I know what's going on.
My best friend Katy made sure of that.

Yes yes, we're all aware.
But what is to be done about the Jews? They won't invite me over for Shabbat?
Why the fuck would they think that I wouldn't enjoy Kiddush?
THIS IS EXACTLY WHY I GET ALONG FAR BETTER WITH ASSYRIANS!
