Hello everyone!
Hi everyone. I was recently invited by a friend from another RP website and was glad to hear about a really serious community! A little about myself...
I'm 20 years old and hail from the US southeast. More specifically, I live in the upstate of South Carolina. I recently joined the SC Army National Guard as a graphics design specialist. (Yeah, I was surprised that the Army had a job like that too...) I'm an over-filled encyclopedia of useless military knowledge, so if you need some reference for a realistic RP or just some basic info on how the military would do something, I would be more than happy to share what I know. I can tell you a bit about the broad scale things, as well as the finer points like tactics and even some specific weapon systems (if you're doing something based in real life).
Something I like to do in my free time is play Airsoft. You'll probably find that my 'tactical' looking characters that I make will have pictures of me in my combat gear. It's basically a military 'simulation' sport where you get all the fun fighting and tactical stuff without all the part where people get hurt. Imagine...paintball...but on a grander scale and designed to be more of a simulation than just a game. I also play way more video games than any person should, and would love to swap info with anyone that plays on the same networks as me. (Please PM for that info!)
In RP, I have generally stuck to 'modern/realistic' stuff. I am willing to try my hand at fantasy, future, etc, but my mainstay is the modern sort of RP where I can take what I know and apply it to a situation and make it as convincing as possible. The character archetypes I like are the 'strong, silent' types, but not necessarily a 'good' character. Kind of lame, I know, but I am admittedly new to RP, but I want to expand my repertoire, so please bear with me!
Thanks for reading, I'm looking forward to writing with everyone.

Re: Hello everyone!
Hey, DeadEye! Happy you could join us here at FOG. :]
That is actually really cool that you work for the National Guard as a graphic design specialist. I'm into art, myself. I've always been lacking in the military knowledge for those types of role-plays that include specifics on the topic (ie. zombie survival RPs), so I'm sure your understanding of so much with that would be extremely helpful. I really admire when people can take that knowledge and apply it to a role-play, thus creating something so much more realistic and believable.
I've never done anything with airsoft guns or paintballing yet, but I think that it'd be really fun and exciting, and for someone who's never shot a gun at a person before (albeit a safe gun!), I'd think it'd help to broaden your understanding of what that encompasses and is really like. After all, video games can only make it so realistic. I do play games too though. ^^
Well, you sound like a perfect guy to have around here, DeadEye! I hope to get to know you better and look forward to reading any role-plays you may join/start in the near future!

Hey! Welcome to FoG!
Have a cookie *hands you a cookie, proceeds to talk while you nom*
Luckily we have all kinds of RPing on FoG, so if you'd like to expand your repertoire you definitely can and in bit by bit ways. For example! *PLUG's E's RP* In Chaotic Anatomy on the Advanced RP board you will find an rp that is based in fiction and has some slight fantasy elements but still had that gritty tactical feel Or if you prefer you can start an rp that has the bits of expanding you want or completely throw in try something new OR you can stick to your fav It's all here and all possible cuz we've got such good writers who are interested in tons of stuff
BUT WAIT THERE'S MORE!! since you joined now you get a new free person hug!!
*HUG*
.... ok.... end of schpiel...
heh
hope I did ok, Fate
In any case. Welcome, nice intro, and we're glad you're here!
See you around the boards (when I get back)

Sorry to disappoint.
Re: Hello everyone!
Well my welcome can't compete with the two above, so I'll just add in my own garnish of welcome! *Shakes hand* Hey there, Deadeye, pleasure to meet you! I've played airsoft a few times my self, and have fallen in LOVE with the game. Sadly, the last time I played was last Fall over at the Army base we've got near here, I do miss it though. But, I am an avid paintballer. (And secretly want to open my own course one day...with spy holes abound!)
And if I need refrences, be certain I'll be comin' over to knock on your PM box to ask! :3 I try to make my rps as realistic as possible, most are fantasy in genre, but often than not, they're a modern fantasy flair. I'd be delighted to see what you come up with, and look forward to bumpin' into you on the boards.

Oh, Fluffy. Let's get you back to Iggers. (You'll have to excuse him. He runs wild, despite being under the ownership of such a loving master.)

Re: Hello everyone!
WELCOME! I hope you like it here! I like a good modern/realistic RP myself, especially combat stuff. So we should get together and RP sometime! Thats cool that you play airsoft, I have always wanted to get into it the guns look awesome, but I am already set up for paintball and there is a bigger paintball community around here then airsoft. So ya.... Anyhwo welcome again and hope you enjoy your stay!

Re: Hello everyone!
Thanks very much for the warm welcome (and the cookie, it was rather delicious).
Something I forgot to mention in my OP was something about my posting habits. I'm pretty good about grammar, post length, frequency, etc, but I think my main problem that I'm trying to work on is the feel of what I write. Too often I re-read something and say 'man that was boring' simply because it was a list of actions and words, not really a story with feeling, setting, ambiance, etc. I'm trying to work on that, so please forgive any rookie problems I'm still trying to shake off.
Thanks again for making me feel welcome!

Re: Hello everyone!
Well, from just reading what you've posted so far in here, it seems as if you are, indeed, really great with your grammar, and you have a nice vocabulary. There are always things we have to work on though, and the important thing (if you enjoy writing) is just to try and improve on them and be aware of them, as you already are.
Re: Hello everyone!
Great, I guess I'll find something to jump into then.

Re: Hello everyone!
Heya, army dude! You want to broaden your horizons yet wish to stay with the familiar real world so that you can apply your expansive knowledge?
Start with Sci-Fi. There are many realistic things that are part of that with a good fantasy element that takes place in the future/space.
I'm going to PM you about networks. I wanna try Airsoft. I'll grab it from somewhere.

Everyone, he has my co-sign (if that means anything). He's an awesome guy and a great writer.

Re: Hello everyone!
Awesome, Welcome DeadEye.
I'm pretty big into AirSoft myself. I'd also be a part of the Nt'l Guard here, if my brother didn't get to it first... [entire family made me swear i wouldnt join the military after he did.. >.> after several tours overseas... ] *ahem* anyhow.
I'm pretty new here, too, and i've already found myself entertained I'm sure you won't have any troubles with your writing, and hope to see you around the boards!

Re: Hello everyone!
Welcome to FOG, Deadeye, and I'm sure you'll love it here. And caught your tag, "Military Moron?" Nyah, I doubt that very much - our folks in uniform are some of the very best and brightest there are, and thank you for your service.
And... oh no... *sigh* ~*picks up Fluffy, tucks gently under arm, pets*~
He's so darn cute, but he does tend to wander, and I just don't have the heart to keep him cooped up all day long...

Re: Hello everyone!
Heh, thanks for the continued bombardment of welcoming everyone.
The 'military moron' thing is somewhat a badge of honor. It's a totally self proclaimed thing. A military moron is just someone who's obsessed with the neat toys that the military gets to use.

<.< >.>
Probably going to date myself here, like I haven't already, but do you mean:
M16A2 (now the M4)
the Mk 19 ( *thoomp* BOOM! "Squeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!" )
Sig Sauer P226 (hint of where I worked, and at Berettas)
the M60 (nothing says FTX like snoozing with one of these in your sleeping bag)
Or... do you mean the REALLY Big Boy Toys? I'm a girl, they wouldn't let me play with those...

Iggy scares me, despite the fact that her lap is really comfy for sleeping on.

Re: Hello everyone!
To answer your question Iggy...
I'm into quite a bit. I'm intimately familiar with the AR-15 series but the only real steel I've gotten my hands on was an A2 during an FTX. (this was when I was in college) I can strip it down to its basic components easily enough, and bore you to death with pertinent details about the form and function of pretty much any part.
In the civilian world I've handled the P226, but I don't know all of the DOD guys and girls that get them standard issue. My best guess would be the department of the Navy (and perhaps some USMC units too). They're lucky, whoever they are, the 226 beats the pants off of the M9, USPc, Glock, or any other pistol that comes chambered in 9mm. Of course that's just my opinion.
I'm into a LOT of the small arms like you mentioned, (walking dictionary of useless info!) but some of the big stuff I'm into would be stuff like the Stryker APC, MRAPs, M1 Abrams, the British Challenger, and of course the HMMWV. I know all kinds of boring details about all of them, lol.
