Byron Huxeley: The Young Man With Victorian Inclinations Empty Byron Huxeley: The Young Man With Victorian Inclinations

Post by Byron Huxeley Fri Jun 04, 2010 11:25 am

Greetings. My name is Byron Huxeley.

I am 22 years of age and a recent college graduate. I received my MA in English Literature and am currently an instructor of English Composition and Critical Analysis. I live with my dear friend Gerard Garsdale in an old Victorian house given to us by my aunt in a historic district in Orlando Florida.

I am possessed of a nearly monomaniacal obsession with books; I would be what many would call a bibliophile. It is not only the contents of the books which I lust after, but the quality of the binding, the scent of the old pages, and the feeling of the dusty material between my fingers. As such, one of my hobbies includes collecting rare books; a hobby which has made me and my companion travel to old bazaars in London, Paris, New York and Rome, has me constantly haunting antique book websites, and has rendered me a well known habitué in all of the used bookstores in my area.

Needless to say Gerard and I spend most of our time outside of work reading, discussing our books over a bottle of good wine (I have an extensive cellar I am quite proud of), journaling our literary experiences and discussions, and planning our next adventures (we just came back from a two week trip to Morocco).

Favorite topics include Greco-Roman antiquity, the letters of great men (Cicero, Pliny, Oscar Wilde), history (Roman, Victorian) and philosophy.

In terms or role playing interest, I am fascinated with anything Victorian (my Master’s Thesis was a comparative study of late 19th century literature- the English Aesthetes vs. the French Decadents). I would love to engage in a cerebral role play possessed of an inclination for psychological suspense either in a modern or 19th century setting.

Thank you- and I hope to make the acquaintance of many of you very soon.

Yo Bryon. Congrats on the degree and welcome to the site. People here are pretty friendly and getting use to the site should be fairly easy. Ask people questions, get involved, roam around and have fun. Keep it straight though, there's rules here but it's to make sure we here all have fun, lolz. And yeah, welcome again.

Thank you very much for the friendly introduction. No worries; I have read the rules and shall certainly adhere to them. As of right now I am trying to find an rp session to jump into in order to get things started. Is it best form to first make a character in the “interest” section and then wait to see if the character’s bio is permissible?

I have no idea what that question is asking...

But! If I had to guess, I'd reply with an answer kind of like this...

"Do what you want."

OR!

Haha. People put ideas in the interest checks, just to see if anyone else would be interested in it. From there, if a person or two does show interest, then the person would go forth with developing the idea further or posting their already prepared idea in the OOC section. Then wait around for a while, get some characters submitted from other people and discuss or whatever and then finally, the IC. But some people just go ahead and create an OOC. I'm not sure if I've seen someone yet just start a role-play. I'm kind of new here as well and haven't seen everything. But this is my line of thinking as confusing as it it...

*shrug*

Oh snap! I think I understand your question. Usually for the OOC, I believe, people will tell you whether or not the character is "permissible." I haven't really seen it done in the interest check sections. But again, I'm not a veteran here.

I am both impressed and envious of your hobby, Bryon. =) I do my fair share of collecting books (there are certain types and series that I own multiple versions of just because they have different covers/were published on different years...) but I do not have the money, resources, time or motivation to go to such lengths for my own collection.

You seem like a very interesting fellow. I look forward to getting to know you through the site!

Lara:
Thank you very much. I too also look forward to meeting what I believe to be a kindred spirit; at least where collecting books is concerned. May our paths cross in this intellectual realm, and may the meeting be cerebral and mutually harmonious.

Byron! How fortuitous that I should chance upon you! This is my first day here and already I see that you and I have a great deal in common. I too would be quite interested in a psychological horror game, as I think you called it in your introductory post. Please, we must collaborate and come up with something together.

At your request I posted a bit about myself. Forgive its brevity but I fear that at this point in my life I am entirely uninteresting. So then, shall I start or shall you start? I think since you came here first you should start the new game.

Welcome to the swirling mists!
I might not collect books, well I guess I do, but not old ones or those with great value. I like to own the books I read though, so I have a lot of books. They're just not worth a lot.
Well, if you have any more questions, don't be afraid to ask, we won't bite...hard. ^_~
Once again, welcome!

Welcome to the Mists Bryon!

Yeah...seems I got a late start on this, and I blame RL on that, but it happens right?

Anyways, congrats on the degree and everything else. The Victorian house I would love to see, I've always liked old buildings like that.

Well, if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask the staff or anyone else. they'll be happy to answer to the best of our abilities.

Thank you. I have met so many wonderful people already. All I can say is that I feel very fortunate to have stumbled upon this site. I met one person in particular whom I know shall become a great friend in time, Roth Wolfe, whom I spent several hours on the telephone with last night. Thank you Rothe! It is rare to meet someone who is so much like myself. The conversations have been wonderful, as had the Corvine thread.
May the friendship flourish in intellectual beauty.

Welcome to the boards, Byron! I, too, am absolutely fascinated with books. Unfortunately, I do not have the means to obtain many of them. My collection is limited to a small few family heirlooms, if you could call it that. And a few I've picked up at nearby used-book stores.

Anyway, I'm sure you'll find this a place to enjoy some wonderful role-plays! Hopefully you enjoy your time here.

Greetings Byron, and let me add my welcome to those already stated. You seem a very well spoken fellow and I think the caliber of talent here will suit you well. I too collect books, though mine are mostly fiction paperbacks and non-fiction thrift store finds on whatever subject may catch my eye.

I think I envy the trips you've been able to take to make your finds more than the rare books you've collected as a result of them. I love to travel, but can rarely afford to do so.

Silvone and Wake Angel, I thank you both.
Wake, the travels I've made have only been made possible by my family, for as we all know, history and literature majors are desinted to live a life of abject poverty! : D
Sadly travel is inordinately expensive. Im sure most of us here wish for the global grand tour. We can dream! You too seem to be very well spoken! i have indeed been impressed with the calibre I have thus far encountered here.

Welcome to FOG, Byron! You seem like a fascinating person to talk to, and I'm most envious of all the extensive traveling you have done. I studied abroad in Paris for three weeks during my undergrad years, and I absolutely loved the richness of history, culture, and art that were present there. Sorry I'm a bit late to the welcome wagon - blame real life for that. I won't prattle on excessively, so I'll just say enjoy your stay and have tons of fun!

Welcome to FOG, Byron! You seem like a very well rounded and interesting individual. I'm sure that you'll fit right in here with your fellow foggers. I'm rather jealous of all your traveling--I've got a bit of wanderlust growing in me so I hope to travel a lot soon.

Anywho, I won't take up your time by rambling on an on. I hope to see you around; enjoy your stay her in the swirling mists!
