Umm.. Hello! My name 'here' is Rune, and it has finally sunk in how incredibly impulsive I can be! I really love to role-play, but I probably shouldn't be here since I am nowhere near advanced level. Hehehe..
Of course, I will do my best to follow the rules. It's good for me to have a great deal of structure, anyway. Feel free to smite me with the ban-hammer if I'm not doing good enough for this RP group, though. It was my mistake to sign up without fully reading the description.

So here is some information about me and what I'm doing with my life at the moment:
I am somewhat boring these days. I hide in my room studying occult books non-stop because life has finally gotten to me. Occasionally I will be kidnapped by very good friends of mine, but as soon as I get home it's straight back to my room. Quite honestly, it's about time I slowed down. For a long time I was so obsessed with fantasy and adventure that I did incredibly reckless things and stayed away from home all of the time. Those are stories for another day, however. silent
So now that I have calmed down, I'm hoping I can get more involved in role-playing again, maybe even become better at it! All of my friends role-play at different levels, most do LARP and table-top, but I'm the odd one out of the group because I consistently procrastinate. Haha.. Neutral

I will do my best, as I said. I hope I don't somehow annoy or insult anyone.

Heh, I don't know you sound more interesting than myself! ~laughs~ I sit around in my room listening to music most of the time, occassionally writing lyrics or other things, playing bass... would study occult books more actually if I had them. ~chuckles~

Anyway, I'm not sure what else to say at the moment... so... welcome to FoG.

I bet I can guess what kind of music you listen to. I know that quote by your name very well. Cruxshadows, right? [Dragonfly, if I'm not mistaken?] I want to listen to them now thanks to you. Wahaha.. Listening to music is another thing I do in my room aside from reading occult books.
I love losing touch with reality way too much. Reading about that stuff just adds fuel to my spiritual fire. If I'm not inside reading, I'll try to get up enough energy to go outside and read. [That never lasts long for some reason.]

It's cool that you play the bass, though.. I tried playing it once a long time ago, and people said I wasn't bad, but I suspect they were lying to me since I had never even touched one before that. Haha..

Thanks for helping me get over my nervousness and for your friendly welcome, though. I don't feel so incredibly boring and out of place anymore.
As a matter of fact.. I'm feeling kind of hyper now. Laughing

Edit: Funny.. I just remembered I have a Cruxshadows quote on my status as well. What an odd coincidence!

Among the numerous things that I listen to, yes. Haha. I actually had a larger portion of the song in my signature, with a picture of a Dragonfly right next to it. Only recently did I switch to the Agathodaimon (Black Metal) quote. Was also using the logo of the band for an avatar, now using a cropped version of the album cover from Wine From Tears. 'Tis understandable. I love reading stuff like that I just don't get around to doing it very often, unfortunately.

Well, I attempt playing bass. ~laughs~ Mostly messing around trying to learn by creating my own stuff. Always got bored trying to learn someone else's material. And, who knows, some people are naturally talented with music? Haha.

No problem! Smile

Wow, I didn't even notice that at first. 'Tis an odd coincidence indeed!

Synthpop and Darkwave are just about all I listen to because they're my favorites. I have some other things in my collection, but I'm so picky about what I listen to. It's kind of sad. I really should open my mind to more types of music. I'm going to listen to my new CD a million times before I start worrying about new bands, though.
Oh.. I see. That is a very beautiful quote on your signature. So it came from Agathodaimon? Is that the name of a song or a band? Also, what is Wine From Tears?

I have an acoustic guitar and I really want to learn how to play it, but there's nobody here that can teach me. Realistically, I probably won't get serious about playing an instrument until I get a celtic harp and/or a music teacher. If anyone in my family is musically talented, I know it isn't me.

Anyway.. I'm going to go to bed now. It's 3:06 in the morning. Sleep will be nice. Thanks much for talking to me. Smile

Ah, don't fool yourself I'm an extremely picky person at what music I listen to. Though I do have a wide range of genres that I listen to, there are always bands in them that I don't like. I'd list the genres I listen to here but, that'd take up too much room. ~chuckles~

Yes, it is, isn't it? Hehe. I love the song and had a hard time choosing which part to quote. When I found the picture it made it easier. Yes, Agathodaimon is the band. Body of Clay is the song. They're an experimental Black Metal band from... Germany I believe, if memory serves correctly. They use clean vocals mixed in with the harsher vocals normally found in black metal, though that song is all clean (save for one line) with awesome synth work. Wine From Tears are a Melodic Death/Doom metal band from Russia. Smile

I have an electric guitar too, I started playing that first actually. Was never that good though. When I got my bass, just on a whim really, I found I enjoyed playing it a lot more and felt more comfortable with it. Would still love to get a nice synth though! Pretty much anyone can learn an instrument though, just takes a lot of practice and dedication. Cletic harps are awesome, by the way. ^^

All right, sleep. Smile

Hi there! WelcomeToFOG

Greetings, Rune, and welcome to Footsteps of Ghosts.

For someone who so overtly questions the quality of her writing, you're quite well-composed grammatically. You'll fit in well amongst the others here on the forums. While we have standards for the different roleplay sections on the boards, I have no doubt you'll be able to meet them. If you're unsure, simply start out by joining a one-on-one or casual roleplay where the requirements are lower; it's the best way to judge your capacity early on. Oh, and don't worry, we aren't so liberal with the ban-hammer. Unless you repeatedly cause trouble, you have absolutely nothing to worry about, and you don't seem like the unpleasant type who would knowingly cause problems.

I actually started learning the electric guitar at one point, myself. I never got further than playing a few basic songs from the Guitar Lesson books that I purchased along with my guitar and the opening riff of "Numb" by Linkin Park. That was probably a mistake, mind you, since playing notes consistently on the smallest string can be rather uncomfortable until your fingertips become accustomed [calloused] to the repeated application of focal pressure.

Jani is, as I like to say, our resident Prophet to the God of Music, though I've given him at least one other title, as well. If you have questions about anything dealing with music, he's the guy to ask before you go anywhere else. Granted, I doubt he'd know much about Taylor Swift or Britney Spears, or even numerous mainstream bands, but he knows a lot about the kinds of music he's into.

Oh, Jani is Melancholy, by the way! It's in his profile, but I don't know who checks those things.

I'm a Rock-lover myself, though my interests are more mainstream, be it American or Japanese. Metallica is my favorite band, and Ellegarden is my favorite J-Rock band. Of course, if you're not interested in mainstream stuff, that probably won't mean much.

Anyway, it's good to have you on the forums. I look forward to seeing what you're capable of.

Feel free to drop into the chat room. Just follow the link in the navigation bar at the top of the boards. It's pretty dead during the early hours of the day, but in the afternoon and evening, it gets pretty lively most of the time. So, if you want a way to get to know some of the more active members of the boards, or just a place to chat about, or even a medium by which you can quickly contact myself or any of the other moderators who might be online at the time, that's a good way to go about it.

See you around, Rune!

Hello Rune!

Welcome to Fog!

I know that the requirements here can seem rather scary and daunting at first, but once you get into it, it's not so bad and you'll quickly find yourself exceeding the requirements.

As Weiss suggested, try the Casual and One-On-One role-plays first, as the standards there aren't quite as high as the Advanced. They'll make a great place to find your niche and get some practice in.

Perhaps take a look at our OOC sections of the forums, as they're a great place to get to know your fellow foggers and make a few friends in the process.

I hope to see you around fog and RP with you in the future. Enjoy your stay here in the swirling mists!

Welcome to FOG, Rune! There is no need for you to be so concerned about living up to FOG's standards - as Weiss said, you already write quite eloquently based on what you've said in this thread alone. The Casual RP section is a great place to get your feet wet, so to speak. But really, we all share a common interest in role-playing and improving the quality of our writing in general, so I have no doubt you will find your niche here. As always, the moderators and fellow FOG members are more than happy to answer questions, so please don't hesitate if you have any concerns. Enjoy your stay!

Hi there! Empty Re: Hi there!

Post by Rune Tue Apr 20, 2010 9:41 pm

@The Melancholy Spirit:
Wow, just the genres would take up a lot of room? That is a lot! Maybe you can give me a full list some other time if it isn't too much trouble?
I can name off eight without repeating new names for the same genres that I listen to; Darkwave, Industrial, Synthpop, Ethereal, Metal, Instrumental, World, and New Age. Most of what I listen to is a mixture of the first three and my metal is usually melodic.. Female vocalists or battle metal are awesome, but I do like German metal with an industrial sound. Oh, and anything with a techno beat is awesome! I don't believe techno counts as a genre.. It's more of an umbrella term, isn't it? @.@

I'm listening to Body of Clay now, and so far it sounds excellent!

Hehe. I want a synth keyboard like the one my friend had. It was a Caseo I think. You can twink them to make all kinds of fun sounds. The kind of harp I can only dream of is an electric celtic harp. They are so pretty with their shiny laser strings!

@Weiss:
I really need to learn to relax more, but when it comes to writing I want it to be perfect. Now that I've been out of school for several years, I feel my grammar and spelling skills slipping dramatically. It's a bit frustrating. I'm sure a new challenge will get my brain going again, though! ^_^
I will definitely join a casual role-play first and see how things go.

Hehe, I can see how that could be a mistake, kind of. Numb is a difficult song for a beginner, isn't it? I know it took me a long time just to get used to moving my fingers around for Guitar Hero and Rock Band, but on the guitar the strings hurt when I use my fingers.. I have to press down the strings in a weird way to keep the strings in place, and I want to believe that happens because it isn't tuned. One of these days I'd also like to learn to play the electric guitar, but only after mastering the acoustic first.

Do people have to earn titles? I just kind of threw one on without thinking..
Well if Jani is that knowledgeable about music, I will be sure to ask him some of my many questions. I'm still somewhat impressed he has the Cruxshadows on his status. They're one of my favorite bands.

You know, I didn't really get into music until I got the chance to see the bands live. It left such an impact on me, that I soon found myself craving more music. So yeh, I really don't listen to a lot of mainstream, but it's more because my focus is on Underground music. I do like alternative music and a scattered few songs from a diverse number of bands and genres, but I don't generally consider them favorites. I like what little I have heard of Metallica. I have never heard of Ellegarden but I will look into them. Oddly enough, I don't think I've heard a Japanese band I didn't love, not that they aren't out there! Haha!

Thanks, and I may drop by the chat room from time to time.

@Bird of Hermes:
Thanks so much for the helpful links! I've read through them several times through and think I have a better understanding of the rules now.
Yes, I am glad that I have made friends this early on. That's incredibly rare for me, but then again I'm usually more of a lurker. ._.;

@ Shadow Moonseye:
I decided I would try to exceed what I normally do as a challenge for myself. I like overdoing it with writing, anyway! ^_^ I can be a bit of a perfectionist and have a habit of deleting everything I write over and over, and somehow I will need to overcome that habit. [I think I should anyway.. Posting very often is important in RPs, isn't it?]

Yeah, I think as soon as I'm done posting this, I will browse through the casual role-play and OOC threads.

This place is very warm and welcoming. I already like it here.
I hope to see you in the RP soon as well!

@SilvanArrow:
Thanks much for the welcome, Silvan!
I have attempted to stay consistent, but it feels like I'm wrestling with an alligator sometimes. The words flow out clunky these days because I haven't been in a grammar class in a long time. Haha.. This is a good time to get back to writing more, maybe it'll all come back to me. I hope so.

So everyone here is trying to improve their writing skills, too? I never thought of it like that. We can all help one another out! Maybe I'll start writing every chance I get and lurk through TV Tropes to learn more about character and story development dos and don'ts. Haha.

The Casual RP sounds like the best place to start. That will be the first place I head to. This might be a stupid question, but what exactly makes them casual? I know the rules listed the length expectations of the posts, but I was wondering just how different it is from a 'regular' rp.
-Are they more laid back?
-Storylines aren't as long?
-Both?
-Neither?

Another thing I need to know; was it rude or annoying for me to shove all my replies in one post? What do people usually do when they get multiple replies to keep things more organized?

---Thanks for the welcomes everyone! I will haunt this thread for replies, but my focus will be on other things for a while so I may be slow to reply. I'm sure I'll see you guys around!

Hi there! Empty Re: Hi there!

Post by Silvan Arrow Tue Apr 20, 2010 10:12 pm

I don't pretend to be an expert on Advanced Role-Playing, since I haven't participated in one yet, but the main difference is in the guidelines regarding the posts (and mods, please correct me if I'm wrong or leave out some important details). Advanced posts are expected to be longer because it is assumed that the role-players will adhere to a higher quality of writing, such as character development, plot, description, etc. Of course, that's not to say that Casual RPs are of a lesser caliber. I'm involved in a Casual RP right now that is very strong in all aspects of the writing, and I am very optimistic that we can finish it.

And yes, we all help each other improve our writing ^_^. If I may suggest, check out the Writing and Journalism section of the forums. People post their own works, be it short stories, poems, sections of novels, etc. for others to offer opinions, critiques, etc. I'm actually working on a new story as well, and I will probably post some of it there in the near future.

Hope this helps answer some of your questions!

Welcome to FoG and don't let the forum rules intimidate you.

Even if your RPing and writing skills need polishing, we will be more than happy to help you with it. We won't ban you simply because of a lack of understanding (or so I think... Weiss has been wanting to use the eject button for some time now. Razz ) I hope you enjoy your stay here.

Hello Rune, welcome to FoG! I'm fairly new to FOG myself, and I haven't participated in any stories yet. I joined for one RP that hasn't gotten out of OOC preparations.

Anyways, I think there is one basic idea behind the length of Advanced RP's versus the Casual (which are the "normal"). By having a larger requirement for length, there is automatically an insistence of more advanced writing. It's not higher quality, per say, but it requires more detail to have a longer post that stays at the same caliber of writing. Does that make sense? Simply by requiring longer posts, the result is more detail, thus making it "advanced."

Now, as SilvanArrow suggested above, Casual RPs can be just as high quality, and possibly even more, than Advanced RPs. It's possible if the writers decide that they can fulfill large, detailed posts. "Casual" just means that there is slightly less required...

I hope I'm right on this... like I said, I'm new too, but I came over from another site organized in a similar manner.

Yeah, I sent you a PM with a list of them. Smile I love melody in metal myself, and female vocalists are amazing as well.

Hehe, glad that you like it! Funny thing is, while Agathodaimon are (experimental) Black Metal my WMP labeled them as World. ~chuckles~

Hmm, interesting. I have no idea what I'd get, I just really want to get a nice synth setup sometime so I can mess around with musical influence from bands like Cruxshadows, Abney Park, Versian Process, Diary of Dreams, Fields of Nephilim and others... Smile

You don't have to earn titles, Rune. I just give out playful titles and nicknames to people on a whim. Not real titles, but simply things that I might call them from time to time just for the sake of fun. You are completely free to give yourself whatever official title you want, and change it as you desire.

If you like Japanese Rock in general, you'll probably like Ellegarden. They have very upbeat music and usually have English lyrics despite being a Japanese band. So, not only is their music less depressing than most American music, but they still have English lyrics so you can sing along as you're dancing about. Fun times.

Welcome to the FOG, Rune!
Everybody beat me to saying EVERYTHING, but I like to look on the positive side, so I guess that leaves me free to say whatever I want. xD

Rune... what a beautiful username. ^^ I love all things Medieval (except the lack of video games... and the Black Death). Since there's a lot of music talk around here, I'll just mention my love of medieval music, as well as all these modern epic themes from movies and video games -- most recently the music from Avatar.

I think we're all going to love having you around, Rune!
I love how it's so often the people who think they won't meet the literacy standards who obviously pass with flying colors. cheers

Welcome to FoG, Rune. I realize that this welcome is coming several weeks after you originally entered FoG's atmosphere, but I believe it's never too late to greet people.

It seems as if you've already been friendly with a few people, but you haven't been very active. That's okay, I just hope you find yourself enjoying FoG a little more in the future.

To answer you question about responding to everyone in one post, that is actually the proper way to do it. Double-posting isn't proper etiquette for FoG. You did the right thing in your post when you responded to everyone at once.

Anyway, welcome to FoG.

I hope you find yourself enjoying it a little more.
