Hello?
The question mark is due to uncertainty, as, quite frankly, you all terrify me. I'm really not sure if I have the skills required to be a member of this website, but until I am booted, I think I shall give it a go.
=D
Anyway, hi!
I generally go by the name of Pain on the internet, despite my username on here. There is a back story to that, but I won't bore you with it. By all means though, ask if it does interest you.
To be honest, I don't like writing these things, as I'm really not an interesting person.
Hmm, I love music {I'll listen to most things, but Nine Inch Nails are my favourite} and obviously I enjoy writing. As for role playing, I like anything with a good plot really, as long as it has LOTS of drama; I thrive on it.
The smilies here are wonderful.

Re: Hello?
Welcome to FoG, Pain. I'm sure your skills are more than adequate for membership. I didn't notice a single mistake in your intro, so you are off to a good start.
I am interested in the aforementioned back story if you don't mind sharing it.

Re: Hello?
Why thank you, some of the tension has eased now.
=P
I don't mind sharing it, but you might mind me doing so when you realise that it is extremely boring.
Basically, when I first got the internet, my usernames were always 'IFocusOnThePain', as it is a song lyric from the song Hurt by Nine Inch Nails. People shortened it to Pain, and it stuck. Excluding people in real life, it is the name that everyone calls me, unless they come up with another appropriate nickname.
See? I warned you.

It wasn't boring. It wasn't overly eventful, but it wasn't long enough to be boring.
By the way, your avatar is quite awesome.

Next time, I shall remember to make it extra long, just to prove my point, haha.
Thank you, I'm rather fond of it myself. I can't take credit for it though, as I'm not even slightly talented with graphics, it simply found me,

Would you like one of these?
Too late! ^^
Welcome to the FOG, Paine! (adding an 'e' looks prettier)
You definitely seem like you'll fit right in. I'm looking forward to seeing some of your writing style!
If you have any questions about anything, please feel free to ask.

Aw, they're so cute!
Thank you, Kalon.
{Is it okay to call you that?}
^^
Paine reminds me of Final Fantasy X-2, which I adore, so I have no qualms with that name at all! As long as people don't take to calling me Painy or Painey, everything will be fine.
I do have a question actually, however weird it may seem.
Are we allowed to start role playing straight away, or do I have to pass some sort of test to prove my worth?

There is an emote hiding under a chair, why did I not see this before?!
That would have been perfect for my opening post.
Are fandom role plays generally popular on here? I have many that I enjoy writing.

Hello! And welcome to the peaceful forest of fog! I am P-114, but you may call me by my local name, Plaguewalker!
I'm pretty new as well, but don't worry! The folks here are eerily friendly. Almost...too friendly.
I hope you have a grand old time here! I haven't even posted in an RP yet, and I'm loving it!

Welcome to FoG! I remember back when I first started and was intimidated by the length requirements... Glad that's over. Like me I am sure you will do just fine and not even have to worry about it. Right now I just try to post at least a page worth of material at the minimum and challenge myself to write more. Anyway I am sure you will do fine and if you have any questions don't be afraid to ask! We aren't as terrifying as you make us out to be. Except for the grammar correctors. They are everywhere and will bust you so fast you wont know what hit you.

I've looked briefly at the role play sections, but I haven't had a good nose around just yet. Something that will need to change soon.

The length doesn't intimidate me, but rather the quality. I'm one of those people who doesn't possess much faith in their own abilities, and joining an advanced role play forum seemed like a large step; hence the terror.
Haha, thanks for the heads up, I shall be on the lookout.

Re: Hello?
I love the song “Hurt,” but I don’t like the one by Nine Inch Nails. I feel that Johnny Cash’s cover was far better. Apparently, when Cash heard the song, he asked NIN if he could cover it. They declined, but he made a demo just so NIN could hear what he was going to do with it. When Trent Reznor((spelling?)) heard it, he actually said that Cash did it better. He claimed that Johnny had made “Hurt” his own. I found that to be pretty cool.
Anyway, welcome to FoG, Pain. I hope that you enjoy your stay. We’re a good bunch if you haven’t already discerned that through this thread. I hope you find a good role play that interests you, or you can always create your own.
I’m one of FoG’s resident Grammar Correctors. I don’t catch everything, and I occasionally make my own mistakes, but when I do catch mistakes from others via the OoC, I like to correct them. I don’t just tell them what they’ve done wrong. I tend to explain how to avoid the mistake in the future as well. I don’t do this in the IC unless someone requests my services in that area because the act of role playing itself is just for fun, and I don’t want to make it less fun for people. Besides, it’s way more time consuming to correct a role play post than it is to correct a short, OoC post.
Anyway, enjoy yourself. I hope you crawl from beneath your chair soon to explore the wide, open, swirling mists.

Self-deprecation is my drug of choice. Seriously though, I’m sure you’re quite the writer. Only time will tell, yes? And of course, a humble welcome to the FOG.
Kathryn, the Johnny Cash cover of Hurt is amazing. I love that song. Was never into NIN that much myself, a few songs are alright but not really my thing. The Perfect Drug isn’t bad though. I just wish Led Zeppelin had done something to prevent Tool from doing a cover of No Quarter... even if Robert and Jimmy say it was better than theirs my opinion is that it was a raping of the original. I digress though...

Oh nice, someone else who knows that story too.
There is a video on YouTube of Cash's version, which has commentary from Trent and it's very interesting to listen to. He basically says everything you already know, but you can hear the sadness in his voice when he says "I knew it wasn't my song anymore."
At least you knew it was Nine Inch Nails originally. I've spoken to a great number of people who think Cash wrote it, before saying how it is much better than Trent's cover. The fact that his version was released ten years later obviously went unnoticed.
I like both versions personally, although NIN's original is better for me. It always makes me cry when I hear it live, especially the last time I saw them, as it was the final song on their goodbye tour.
Okay, that is enough NIN talk for now! Thank you for the welcome!

Hehe, lame jokes are funny sometimes, purely because they're so bad you just have to laugh.
I appreciate those words, I will definitely continue trying to improve my writing skills and joining FoG is a step in the right direction, I feel. Intimidation is simply something for my to conquer so I can better myself.
I'm enjoying this forum already, it's fantastic and I've started having a poke around, liking what I see.

Re: Hello?
Pain, I actually heard Johnny Cash's version before I ever heard the one by NIN. Personally, I really like NIN, but I hate their version of "Hurt." It doesn't help that I can't understand what's being sung in NIN's version, and I hate how the music itself is louder than his singing. In my opinion, the music should always compliment the lyrics in sound quality, but it didn't when I heard it. I'd like to see that video with Trent's commentary at some point. Probably when I get DSL. Dial-Up doesn't enjoy videos...
Melancholy, I can't really offer my opinion because I've never heard those other songs of which you speak. XD

Re: Hello?
Hmm, I have to disagree. With certain music it is fitting the vocals not be so powerful. A lot of more melancholic, slower stuff is great with vocals barely being able to be heard. It just depends really though. Of course, a decent amount of what I think of when I refer to this is what some people call DSBM, which is Depressive (Suicidal? I don’t know, I always found this stupid) Black Metal. Personally it always seemed more like a cross between post-rock, neo-folk, and early Black Metal but whatever, the genres we now have for metal are starting to get ridiculous.
I only know the NIN’s song The Perfect Drug because I watched the video one day when we used to have this channel through our cable company that would play an odd assortment of videos. It was a nice channel, until a month in and it was all being repeated with no new additions. -.-
Side Note: I’ve been told I look like Trent Reznor, just with longer (curly) hair.

Re: Hello?
Well, I don't think it worked well with NIN's version of "Hurt." That song isn't a nice, soft one like Johnny Cash made it. At least, that's how I perceived it. It didn't sound good to me as it was.
I don't actually know what Trent Reznor looks like aside from having dark hair, so I couldn't tell you if there's a resemblance. XD

Re: Hello?
Understandable, mine was a general statement really. I've listened to a decent amount of bands that utilize very low growls and/or whispers (even harsh, raspy whispers) that are barely able to be heard in the music. Or even just spoken voices that are hard to discern... I still have no idea what the lady is saying in Agalloch's Hollow Stone. Haha
You could always use google. Personally I don't really see the resemblance, but I've had a few people say it. ~shrugs~

Re: Hello?
Kathryn Lacey: Hmm, I've never had that problem with their version, to be honest. I don't know if that's due to the fact that I know the lyrics so well and can always hear them, but I also see your point. Generally, songs that don't have discernible lyrics do annoy me, however I do agree with The Melancholy Spirit that sometimes it works.
Each to their own, though.
The Melancholy Spirit: He's a good person to look like! Which Trent era do you think you compare to best? I'm guessing by the length of your hair that it's Pretty Hate Machine/The Downward Spiral era. Please correct me if I'm wrong. Actually, as you said you only know The Perfect Drug, which isn't actually on an NIN album, I'm guessing that you have no idea what I'm talking about.

Re: Hello?
Seeing as how it is the only one I really know by name, no I don't. It isn't the only song I've ever heard, just the only one that I've ever learned by name and taken more time to get into. Truth is I might actually be able to like NIN a lot, if I took the time. I'll get around to it, eventually, probably.
Here is the image the person used as a reference, saying something along the lines "Jani in ten years with a hair straightener". A few other people agreed, like I said... I don't really see it that much myself.
http://scrapetv.com/News/News%20Pages/Technology/images/Trent-Reznor.jpg
Also, here is a song that I think is done very well with the low vocals. It is long, I realize that, and apologize if that is a hassle for anyone. ‘Tis by a post-rock band from… ok I forget where these guys are from but somewhere around the great lakes I think. Haha

Hm... I can see how they could see it, but I never would have thought it myself. Your facial structure is sharper, and your eyes are more cat-like. Overall, it's... vaguely similar?
Mer... Who knows.
As far as vocals, I don't mind soft vocals complimenting stronger ones or soft music accompanied by soft vocals. It's when the music is loud and strong and the vocals are overwhelmed by the music that I hate it.

Re: Hello?
That is pretty much what I thought, Kathryn. Well, aside from the cat-like aspect of my eyes… I don’t think I’ve ever heard that one before. ~chuckles~ Not even from a certain girl who I knew in highschool that loved my eyes… and would comment whenever they looked grey or even gold on certain days. Apparently they do this.
Yeah, I can understand that with the vocals. The song I linked previously was an example of stuff you could handle then, probably. Given you like ambient, neo-folk influenced stuff; which I, personally, love.
I’m trying to think of some of the stuff I know that has loud and strong music with the ‘overwhelmed vocals’ feel to it, but sadly I don’t own any of it so ‘tis hard to recall which bands (and on which songs even!) have done this where I think it worked really well. :/

The Melancholy Spirit: Oh, it's the With Teeth era! Very interesting. I was expecting old school Trent, although I'm not sure why.
I think he's gorgeous, I'm a total fan girl, especially since I met him. It was back in '05, and I still continue to get all excited when I think about it. Pathetic, but I don't care.

Heh, I'm just going off what someone once said (and a few others agreed). As you can see, Kathryn thinks it is only a vague resemblance at best.
No worries, I can understand that since if I ever meet a certain few people I’ll probably be the same way. So far I’ve only met all the guys in Children of Bodom, and that was really cool but if I got to meet the guys from Nightwish and Dark Tranquillity I’d most likely be like that… or even John from Agalloch and David from Woods of Ypres.

Re: Hello?
[Sulks.] The further I read into this thread, the more I realized that all the reason behind my welcoming you had been drained! If I had gotten here sooner, perhaps...
When I saw that you didn't mind "Paine", I was going to call you Painy for the sake of fun. Then I read on to learn that you would be quite opposed to the idea. Such is life, I suppose. C'est la vie.
I'm also not a big music fan like Mel, so that rules out discussion on that kind of thing. I wouldn't even know where to begin. Hell, I didn't even realize Nine Inch Nails had been around long enough for Johnny Cash to do a cover of one of their songs. Oi vey...
Well, you're from England, which immediately makes you slightly cooler than most newbies! Aside from that, I've got nothin' to offer except a boring old welcome. So, enjoy your stay, and be sure to hop into the chat room if you find yourself with the extra time! It's not particularly lively just yet, but we're trying to coerce more users into using it for some real time conversation. It's easier to get to know each other that way, right?
See you around!
