Sexy archaeologist hunk seeks....
Sexy archaeologist hunk seeks team of intelligent, acrobatic, firearms-trained dare devils willing to sacrifice their lives for sport.
How's that for an interest check?
Here's the deal. Now that I think I've finally gotten my sea legs back for roleplaying, I'm thinking of hitting something up along the lines of Tomb Raider. In fact, that's exactly what I have prepared. It is recommended that you first play the game Tomb Raider: Legend to get an idea of the direction that this going in - however its not completely necessary. If you want to get a quick overview of what happens in Legend (without having to spend thirty bucks to watch Lara do back flips in slow-mo while shooting down her enemies.......which was totally BAD ASS) you can get it here. For those that have played TR:Underworld.... ignore it. It never happened. The entire thing was just a cover story the British government came up with to distract you from this roleplay.... *cough*.
The story takes place years after the events of Legend. Lara Croft, world-famous archaeologist, came ever close to obtaining all of the clues needed to uncover the location of an active stone dais where she could use the sword Excalibur to unlock a gateway to Avalon and find her mother. What stopped her? Age. Though it may seem blasphemous to end the Tomb Raider adventures with Lara Croft, it only makes logical sense that she would be a bit too... old... to continue. Afterall, her adventures went back long before 1997, when Eidos released the first Tomb Raider game came out for ye old Sony Play Station. But fear not, TR lovers. For her son, James Croft, is picking up where his mother left off.
Tasked by his mother, he must find and assemble a team of eager and adventurous tomb raiders to accompany him to the shifting sands of Egypt. Starting at the south end of Nile, you will make your way North, learn the history of the three kingdoms of ancient Egypt, avoid perilous traps, spring from ledges, grapple your way over bottomless pits, mow down mummies with a seemingly limitless supply of bullets, stumble upon valuable but must-be-relinquished-at-some-point-down-the-road artifacts, and even have breath-holding contests as you plunge into waters that even professional scuba-divers would say no too.
Sound like fun?
To get you guys started, I've already composed the opening. I hope you enjoy it:
- Spoiler:
- Tomb Raider: New Coming
Starring James Croft
His mother had done this countless times before him; swinging from ropes, vines, and ledges. As James tightened his grip on the thick rope he was dangling from, nearly forty feet in the air, he swung his legs backward, and then kicked out forward. Doing this several times he was able to gain enough momentum to begin swinging like a pendulum. If he should let go, his only safety net was ice cold, North Atlantic salt water. As he swung through the air, his cheek bones began to loose their feeling. The atmosphere was so pain-stakingly freezing that his entire body felt numb from head to toe.
James' target was a ledge about sixteen feet ahead of him, if he was merely dangling from the rope as he had been doing only seconds ago. Now that he was swinging full throttle, he should be able to let go when the rope stretches out far enough. As he began his ascent on the forward swing, the ledge appeared to come closer to him itself, and then begin to drift away beneath his boots. It was then that he let go. If he had let go a moment later, he would have fallin straight down and missed the ledge. Too soon, and he would have ended up crashing into it.
His mother had taught him many things back at home in England. She had converted the entire ball room into a home gymnasium for the sole practice of survival. It was in that gym that he learned all the acrobic skills that he knew today, nearly thirteen years later. And today, he had just successfully crossed a thirty-foot gap, in the Arctic frozen wasteland of what was once ancient Norseland, using only a climbing rope and his survival skills.
James had a way to go before being able to meet up with his mother's reputation as the world-renowned archeologist, Lara Croft. But he was getting one step closer each day he lived. Life was an adventure; and much like his mother, he hated being stuck indoors... unless of course, it was a tomb.
James had arrived in Iceland only the day before, and he was already hot on the trail of a lost artifact. One that would reveal the location of a tomb that his mother never found.
When James turned around to gaze back over what he had swung across, he hadn't realized the stunning sureality of the environment. He was navigating frozen caverns approximately one kilometer underneath the tundra of the far north reaches of Iceland. The underground lake that he had just crossed over leaked out into the North Atlantic somehow; probably through more caverns and creveces hidden beneath the icey surface. Often, the cavern ceiling would reach out to the surface, allowing for beams of light to travel down the shafts and reflect off of the glittering walls, spreading rays in various directions. It was a wonderful, natural light source that made everything seem so much bigger.
As James continued down the path the walls of ice and stone began to grow father apart. He found himself entering a large chamber before long. The ceiling had been carved out, revealing yet more light. This shaft, however, was far larger than the others he had seen moments ago. It was almost as if it was purposely carved, rather than naturally by glaciers and moving water over time.
In the center of the chamber, the rock dipped down into a circular trench. In the middle of this trench was a stone slab, carved by hand. And on the slab itself, was another stone element. This one, however, didn't match its surroundings. Even though it was evident that man had carved their way through this caverns nearly a thousand years ago, this one stone tablet, resting in peace in the center of this room, was from another exotic realm. The stone itself was foreign to Iceland. It was lighter in tone. James cautiously approached the tablet; keeping a watching eye and ear out for traps. His mother had warned him of such things. She had encountered countless numbers of traps in her tomb raiding years; narrowly surviving most.
When James had reached the tablet he starred at it for a moment, taking what had been etched in the ancient stone. There was a drawing of a man - perhaps a warrior or soldier - holding a sword above his shoulder as if to signal a march or attack. His other hand had been overlapped with a shield. Below the man were more etchings. These were runes, rather than drawings. He could not make out the language. But he wasn't here to translate; he was here to take it - the translation would come later.
For years, his mother had been looking for this one artifact. She needed it in order to find the location of something very important to her. James had taken it upon himself to continue her quest. Before he could go any further, James first had to bring this rock back home for analysis. It was the mizzing piece of a puzzle that had been left incomplete for far too long. And it may very well point him in the right direction to continue his search.
----------- England - Outskirts of London - Croft Manor -----------
"Egypt?" James asked, startled at Remmy's conclusion after analyzing the stone tablet he had picked up in Iceland. "Are you sure? Those are runes, not hieroglyphs."
"Absolutely," Remmy replied with a smile. "This tablet is made of the same white limestone found towards the soutern tip of the Nile. That's where the Egyptians assymbled the stone blocks used to build the pyramids in Cairo. They placed the stones on large rafts sturdy enough to support their one-ton weight and, since the Nile flows North, they sent them up the river to be delivered to the builders." Remmy paused, double checking the holographics screen displaying the analysis results. "There's no mistaking it, that's exactly where that stone tablet originated from."
"But that doesn't quite explain the runes etched on the surface. The Egyptians had their own way of recording literature. They never used runes."
"Yes, but remember, you found this thing in Iceland. Which means that whoever placed it there must have written on it themselves. No doubt that those persons were early Saxons. Speaking of which, I haven't been able to actually decifer the language. I've run every program and script imaginable, but I still haven't had any results turn up. It seems that who ever carved those runes designed it as a code as well."
James turned his gaze from Remmy to the mysterious stone tablet, now sitting on the examination table in front of him. Several scanners were raised directly overhead. Moments ago, they had been shooting green and red lazers up and down the tablet for hours, scanning and recording every detail of the artifact and relaying what they picked up to Remmy's computer. "So we have a dead language written in code... unbelievable."
"Having trouble, are we?" the voice startled James and Remmy both, but they knew who it belonged to. James turned around to see his mother, Lara, walking into the study. James felt a little embarrassed that he had been startled by her. "You really are my son. Always wanting answers, but lucky enough to run into their questions."
Lara's age was only beginning to show. Her body had gradually more frail and weak. She had to give up her tomb raiding several years ago because her body was just flat out exhausted. But because of her adventurous years and constant exceptional physique, she will remain ever graceful and beautiful until the day she dies. Tired but still full of life and interest, Lara casually travelled all over the world these days. During her visits to ruins and digs, she would do more talking rather than exploring. Since she no longer raided tombs, she spent her time lecturing at famous archeological sites to tourists and scientists alike; explaining one main theme each time... at some point, everyone dwells in the past.
"I remember my days in Egypt. One trip wasn't so grand though."
"Werner?" James remembered the story his mother told him once, when her old mentor, Professor Werner Von Croy, had relentlessly persued her across the sands of Egypt, from Cairo to Alexandria and beyond.
"Yes. But that was long ago. Its time for you to make your own adventures. And Egypt is a wonderful place to start. Its trecherous though. You'll need more than a few climing ropes if you are to survive." Lara moved gracefully over to a bookshelf on the far wall of the study, directly underneath the balcony that led into the office upstairs. Lara found a book and, instead of pulling it off the shelve, pushed it in. Several gears could be heard clicking and moving behind one of the bays of the bookshelf. Suddenly, the shelf itself budged backward and slid out of the way, disappearing behind the wall.
James and Remmy were amazed; starring owl-eyed at the secret crevice suddenly revealed to them. James always knew that Croft Manor housed many secrets, but he had found only so few. It seems that there are definitely many more, waiting to be found. James often wondered if Lara, herself, had found them all.
Beyond the entrance of the secret crevice, was a glass box resting on top of a pedastal. The pedastal appeared to be Greek or Roman by design. Several of them could be easily spotted around the Manor. But what was most interesting were the two objects protected by the glass box. James recognized them instantly as Lara's twin Heckler and Koch 9mm pistols. "So that's where you hid them!" he exclaimed.
Lara turned and smiled at her son. "Well I had to find someplace where you wouldn't get to them. We didn't need another incident like last time."
James knew that his mother was referring to the time when he took them from her bedroom when he was younger, and played 'cops n' robbers' in the dining room. Not realizing that the guns were loaded, he had unclipped the safety and squeezed the trigger. What he wanted to be an imaginary bullet, ended up being the real thing. The 9 milimeter round slammed into a piece of chine on the other end of the dining hall. He was nine and a half years old then. Lara nearly had a heart attack and made sure that he would never find them again... until, that is, he was ready for them.
"I take it I'm ready, then?" James asked.
Lara eyed him suspicously at first, but her frown soon turned into a brightful and trusting smile. "Yes," she said calmly, "you're ready."
James made a fist and jerked it through the air in triumph.
"But!" Lara's sudden exlamation had both men stunned. "You won't go at this alone. Not Egypt. Its far too dangerous. I want you to assymble a team."
James' excitement turned into an instant disappointment. "A team? Wait a minute! Let's be fair here. You never went with a team!"
"Actually," Lara said, before her son went any further, "I used to have a team as well. It was long before I started lugging around these pistols, but I never realized how much I needed them until this whole quest began. True, I may not have had as much fun as I did without them, but there were times, now that I look back, that I could really have used some help. For instance, in the hidden tomb beneath the Louvre in Paris, I could have had someone distract that demon while I grabbed the painting I needed, or vise-versa."
Stopping Lara before she went on again about her adventures, James interrupted and said, "But you just said I'm ready. Why can't I do this on my own?"
"You're ready to wield firearms, sweety, not go full on at deadly traps and mummies by yourself. Trust me, no one alive knows Egypt's dark past better than I do."
James kept his frowned, but reluctantly gave up on trying to argue with The Lara Croft. Perhaps it would benefit him to build a team. Trying to stay positive, he began picturing the team right away. Remmy was definitely in. Being the head of research in the house, he could easily remain where he was and communicate using an ear piece and satelite. James now had to find people with acrobic skills equal to his own. He needed a team with flexibility as well as smarts. And trust... that was the greatist asset of all that he would require of them. He needed not only to trust them, but for them to trust him. The quest he was going at was crazy and probably not worth most people's time, but if they stuck with him, their reward would be great.
If this gets enough interest to warrant an OOC, I'll go into more detail about some of the key characters (like Remmy, and others that you'll meet) as well as post some character profile outlines.
If you're not interest, then I thank you for at least reading and hope you enjoyed what I've written.

Re: Sexy archaeologist hunk seeks....
Thank you! ^_^
I feel bad for not offering to join, especially since I'm an avid fan of fantasy or "Sexy" archaeology...but I have a few reasons:
1. my mind is stuck in "real" archaeology mode
2. I never played tomb raider
3. My activity on FOG has been choppy and I wouldn't want to let you down.
On a positive note, I thoroughly enjoyed reading your interest check

Lol...I'm more worried about rattlesnakes :/
I know it's only been 3 days...but since as of now I'm the only one that has bothered posting here, want to consider a 1x1 with yours truly?
I'd basically need a tomb raider plot summary, so I understand if you don't want to bother, but I figured I'd offer so this sexy archaeology story doesn't die...
