Fantasy RP Wanted! (Advanced/Literate)
Right, guys. I need some help.
I really, really, really want to take part in another high fantasy roleplay - you know: magic, evil, demons, faeries, elves, dwarves, mages, dragons, monsters, blah blah blah...
The trouble is... *wait for it* ...I have actually run out of ideas. No shit. I have about a dozen different novels/short stories here at home that I haven't managed to complete simply because I miss the dynamic interaction you get with roleplaying. But as it happens, my muse has decided that she wants to go on holiday and simply refuses to create something new for me to post up here and get my teeth stuck into.
So I figured I'd post my likes/dislikes here in the roleplayers wanted section in the hope that somewhere out there is a fellow fantasy fan brimming full of cool concepts that we can splurge onto a thread together. I like helping to bring things to life.
Now, I am currently in a very well-developed roleplay - "Freedom Forsaken" http://www.roleplaygateway.com/freedom-forsaken-t11591.html - that I absolutely adore and so may only be able to post once a week (though I can assure you the effort will be made to post more where I can).
I'm looking for something similar I guess, in the sense that I want something that can grow and develop the more we play it. I love new maps/worlds and exploration/quest roleplays as it gives such a fabulous freedom to the storyline (in fact, I ended up with 3 more characters than expected in Freedom Forsaken because of that reason). As you can see from the previous comment, I am very happy playing more than one character at once and will play any sex/age/race depending on what I think fits. I am literate (at least I like to think so) and can't stand text-speak or poor spelling/grammar. If in doubt, paste your post into a word document and get the spell-checker on it; I treat all my roleplays as fledgling novels and just as I wouldn't have poor spelling in a book, I don't tolerate it in a roleplay. Sorry.
Ok, so less of the general and more of the nitty-gritty: onto what I like/don't.
Likes (in order of preference):
High Fantasy/General Fantasy = the whole caboodle. We're talking medieval magic here, elves, goblins, demons, mages, alchemists, dragons, swords, castles, riding horses everywhere - just general stereotyped fantasy.
Surreal Fantasy = alternate realities, living through your dreams... this is where the imagination really explodes. As in my sci-fi comments below, as long as things are described initially, I'm happy with pretty much anything.
Sci-Fi/ Sci-Fi Fantasy = love it, though I'm not really technological... I've watched a few sci-fi programs/films but I'm not going to understand necessarily what a dampening field will do so I'm happy with new-fangled technologies/alien races etc as long as they are simply described!
Post-Apocolypse = I really enjoy survival roleplays - though the whole zombie thing not so much - and often my favourite post-apocolyptic roleplays are those that smush futuristic "OMG, nuclear fall-out" with fantasy "F*ck, I have to kill stange monster things with my sword..."
Traditional race pairings = ok, I'm going to be quite tentative with this. I like Vampire/Werewolf and Angel/Demon roleplays (and all of those paired with Humans/Elves) but I really hate stereotypes or fan-fiction based on these. Yes, if you want to recreate a celestial war then do so, but if Templars get involved, you'll lose my interest pretty quickly. If you want to battle it out with the Vamps and Lycans, then sure, I'll jump in, but bring out Underworld/Twilight and I shall pick up my skirts and run as far and as fast as I can. Use your imagination peeps - there's so much you can do with these races that hasn't been done yet!
Modern Fantasy = modern day but with magic involved. I think the Harry Potter concept is the closest comparison - not the actual story though: as you can tell, I'm not too keen on fan-fiction!
Dislikes (in no particular order):
Fan-Fiction = I roleplay to satisfy the urges of my imagination at present. If I ever do anything based on a book, it is just that: very loosely based, similar concept, no canon characters, etc. You may be able to convince me to do one but you'll be better off twisting it slightly and noting that some of the concepts involved are from "such-and-such" to get me to join.
High-School = occasionally, yes. Over one of my likes? Never in a million years. I don't mind starting in school, but frankly, unless reality rips the school apart and sends it into another dimension where you need to slay demons for homework, I don't bother. I've done school for 13 years and university for 3 years: I've satisfied my educational urge and I don't particularly want to do it all over again in my free time...
One-on-One Romance = if two characters in a roleplay develop an emotional relationship with each other, that's fine - it's character progression. But I will not base a whole roleplay on just "boy/girl 1 likes boy/girl 2 but boy/girl 3 is always getting in the way - will their relationship survive?" Nope. Nada. Never. Bleurgh. And a relationship is a relationship: it develops. Love at first sight is fine but that does not necessarily mean everything is hunky-dory right from the off...
I have just a couple of other things to note:
- I am happy with romance in my roleplays but please do remember that this site has a PG-13 rating. Feel free to insinuate - after all, I'm not adverse to my roleplays going quite dark (there was all sorts going on in FF... bloody seductive, evil telepaths) - but no lewd behaviour, please. Subtlety is always best.
- Like I said above, I am very happy to go dark with my roleplays, which means I am certainly not adverse to violence, gore, psychological horror, torture, etc. However, think of it as thus: Lord of the Rings versus the Saw series. Yay to the former, no way to the latter. I'm talking context here.
- I do swear. It's an awful habit, I know, but it can really add emphasis in the right situation (the evil, seductive telepaths mentioned above for example are often refered to as 'bitches' or 'whores'). So swearing is a yay, but don't overuse it - it can get tiring if you're too overenthusiastic and use it for no reason...
And I think that's pretty much it! If you've managed to read through the whole of this, then you're probably someone I'd like to roleplay with. I like people who take time to read and look deeply into things as often that's reflected in their character and thus the roleplay too. So, yeah: any ideas that you have/want to expand on/need more characters or roleplayers for, either pop a post here or send me a PM.
I look forward to (hopefully) roleplaying with y'all!

No, no. It's an R rating here at FOG, so it's much more free.

Yay! No, really, YAY! For some reason, most of my 'plays end up really dark. It must be a character trait of mine.
For most of the rest of that it was like reading a list of my own preferences. It was so close it was scary, in fact, so I don't think there's going to be much of a problem between us if we 'play together. However, I've never really done pure one-on-one unless it's a fight thread, so if you want to go and do a one-on-one you might find that I fumble a bit at the beginning.
Though, truth be told, most of my multiple people roleplays are just to give me something to work off in character interaction. I find that, eventually, no matter how much effort you put into it, eventually one-on-one, character-driven roleplays devolve into a series of nearly one liners, or they fizzle quite quickly. That's just me looking at one-on-ones that I'm not involved with, though. I don't know if everyone is like that.
So, on to the suggestions. I'm not limited to these; I'm up for playing with anything you like as well. Including an Elf-infested forest full of Elves, although I'd personally make the Elves very interested in intrigue and backstabbing each other:
~~~~~
Worlds
~~~~~
- 'Technomage'.
I once read a short story which mixed fantasy and sci-fi elements. On a Colony world, something went wrong somewhere near the founding of the civilisation there, and the culture devolved into a more primitive, medieval state. Somehow, the old technology that set up the atmosphere, and even powered some of the devices, gave a few of the colonists abilities similar to magic. I think that, somewhere near the beginning, one of the 'Founders' experimented with some of the animals they brought with them and made some freaky mutant things that were regarded as 'evil' by the later culture.
We could use a world based on this. It wouldn't be unusual for a farmer to find broken 'artefacts', like a laptop, or for a Ranger to find an unstable nuclear reactor deep in the woods. Thankfully, I've forgotten most of the plot for the short story this would be based on, and can't remember any of the characters offhand anyway. That's why it's time to trot this particular world pattern out.
-The Dying
In the frozen wastelands of a world, presided over by a dying sun, there is still room for adventure, monsters and magic. Technically, this one would be a little like life in an ice-age. It could be a simple world, with a red sun that nearly fills the sky and constant daylight. Every day for the characters could be a battle to survive against the odds.
This one, frankly, is a little bittersweet. You know that in this one the characters world is dying, and there's nothing you can do about it. Magic, I assume, would be primarily ice-based, and it would be possible to learn about wilderness survival at the same time.
-Steampunk
Or Gaslamp Fantasy. Whichever. Victorian buildings, with inexplicable steam-based hi-tech gadgets and multitudes of mad scientists running around. There could be (among other things) Frankenstinian monsters, death machines and odd little gadgets for, as an example, playing every orchestral instrument ever made, including the Borgonian Nostril Flute.
I promise to not mention Agatha Heterodyne, Klaus Von Wulfenbach, or any of the other characters from Girl Genius. >_>
~~~~~
Plots
~~~~~
-The Moonstone
Classic swords-and-sorcery scenario, set in a country full of constantly warring little kingdoms. A mountain next to one of the kingdoms is supposedly the home of an artefact of great power, and every one of the other kingdoms wants to get their grubby little hands on it. And then some warlord from somewhere foreign starts invading the kingdoms one by one, and the remaining kingdoms become desperate.
This wouldn't be a usual 'get-your-party-together-and-go-on-a-quest scenario. It'd be more of a 'flee-the-invading-army-and-try-to-find-something-to-stop-them-killing-your-family' scenario. It's a very loose 'play, and you don't even have to go for the MacGuffin. It's based on the historical events that formed most countries. It's a little vague because, frankly, it can be set anywhere, and in any genre.
-The Tempest
"Rage, rage against the dying of the light."
A natural event is occurring and the knowledge that it is coming causes the wise men to go insane. Finding a safe place to shelter, or beating the odds and stopping or delaying the Tempest, would be at the centre of this one. It could be anything: an actual Tempest, the return of some dark demigod bent on destroying the world, a volcano erupting and destroying the city... Anything.
A reversal of this would be that the Tempest has already happened, and the characters could end up reversing it and putting the world back as it was before the destruction or return.

You sound like a PERFECT candidate for a spot in Sephiris: The Price of Peace.
I've crafted it as a super-deep world with lots of exploration, and where the players have a lot of freedom to add to the world and the story.
It's set up to where anyone can enter at any point, so please have a look if you're interested!
*dangles figurative carrot* It's High Fantasyyyyyy....!

Oh, you bastard. You've gotten me curious as well, now. *clickies link*

It's a good one, so far, I'll be first to admit, but there's rather too much reading for a quick start. I've only read about two of the posts, and the rest are ginooormous. I'll be hours reading through them to get a taste of the world and what's happening. I'll be even longer reading through the OOC to see what's been discussed and agreed upon for the world.
If ShadowWake goes for yours instead of starting this one, though, I wouldn't be surprised. I wouldn't blame her, in fact.
I'd blame you, and your deliciously tempting world. *points at Kalon*

Re: Fantasy RP Wanted! (Advanced/Literate)
I think unfortunately, Kalon, Kitty's right on this one. Not necessarily for the reasons he suggests but simply for the fact that I've just joined an existing roleplay that is requiring me to read 13 pages of mahoosive posts. I'm actually asking the roleplayers to summarise the discussions in the OOC because 13 IC pages plus 27 OOC pages is just simply too much for even me! I'd have joined Sephiris otherwise - sounds really awesome - but I'm committed to this other one and I know them well enough not to want to let them down! So for now, I'm going to say thank you very much for the offer but I will have to decline. However, if ever this existing RP becomes stale, I might pester you again.
Seeing as your ideas, Kitty, are starting ideas I am a little more inclined to accept with my current RPing timetable! (Actually, I was rather surprised by the amount of responses - I'm already signed into 2 more RPs!) I am very happy doing open roleplays; don't tell anyone, but actually given the choice, I'd rather go for the open ones than the one-on-ones.
I love both your plots and the worlds, and suggest (if you don't mind, that is) smushing a few of the ideas together. As an initial suggestion, these are the lines I'm thinking along (thank you, muse):
- We have a technomage world in a sense, with everything having pretty much reverted to a medieval period. No one remembers the time when technology ruled the planet, although in the time sense of thing, it wasn't that long ago (maybe a couple of hundred years?). I'm thinking either a 'disaster' of sorts (nuclear, maybe?) or simply a worldwide economic crisis. If it's something nuclear then I think we can assume that's the reason for magic. Otherwise, maybe it's just some leftover of a psychological scientific discovery (e.g. what the rest of the brain actually does) that has been passed on through the generations?
- Somewhere along the lines, some kind of 'prophesy' is leaked that there will be a great disaster (e.g. a big freeze/drought/mystical force that wipes the planet, etc.) and the world will end. Being the medieval era that it is, some believe this is true and prepare for the end, other believe it as utter nonsense and carry on with their lives.
- However, the real truth is that somewhere on the planet, a snippet of technology still exists, maintained in secret by a small organisation that are seen by the rest of the world to be simply mages of high calibre. Now this is where my muse gets rather vague... they could either be an ok group and in their general scientific progression create/break something that could actually spell disaster for the world and are trying desperately to stop it happening. Or we could have a whole conspirarcy going on and for one reason or another, this group are intent on detroying the planet and have created a weapon with which to do so.
- Either way, our characters would be people selected/convinced by a very intelligent person - King/Lord/Mage maybe - (or a convincing mystic/wiseman) that believes the prophesy is true; but unlike everyone else, they believe that someone/thing is behind it. We could either have the King (or whoever) knowing what the threat is and sending "the best" out to help/stop it from happening or we could have him sending the group out to find out more (and then, of course, they end up getting sucked into the whole thing...)
So it's a fantasy/futuristic/quest/survival ('cause there'll probably be the beginnings of effects on the world from the thing that's about to destroy it) /apocolyptic/conspiracy roleplay!
What do you think? Obviously you're free to add/change/delete anything to it - most of that was pretty much brain splurging...

Now me, I'd go with a conspiracy group and the group of 'mages' with the accident. The members of the conspiracy could simply pounce on the accident as an opportunity to fulfil their objectives. We could even do it so that the accident was contained, after causing a few phenomena across the world. In the meantime the conspiracy group have made an exact duplicate of the experimental device in another location. Naturally, the original group are blamed for the new disaster that's getting ready.

The investigative group part sounds good to me. Maybe they could be sent to investigate the original group responsible to find out if their protestations of innocence are true, and they end up stumbling across the conspiracy group by an unrelated chance encounter? That is, if we end up going with my previous suggestion.
Looks like you've got your muse back. Congratulations?

Both ideas sound great! Yeah, my muse seems to be rearing her ugly head again, after disappearing for so long (the biatch...)! How do you want to work this, then? I'm assuming from your earlier comment that you'd prefer an open roleplay (which I'm obviously fine with) but do you want to set up the RP, seeing as originally they were your ideas? I can do it if you don't want to but thought I'd offer you first choice, seeing as it's your baby!

Re: Fantasy RP Wanted! (Advanced/Literate)
Open roleplay is one of my obsessions. Although... not too open, I think. If there's more than four(ish) people at the start I tend to lose track. Or I end up accidentally blowing the plot up into something epic, and lack of planning tends to turn it into a trainwreck. That happened to my last serious roleplay on a different site. It hit me pretty hard at the time, hence the hiatus I mention quite frequently in my earliest posts here.
But... My baby? I just threw those ideas out there, and you decided to smush them all together into one big one. I'd say, since you took bits of all the ideas and made a new plot out of all those pieces, that it's just as much yours as it is mine.
However, I'm willing to start the thread. Shall we plan the world beforehand, or just let it develop as the thread goes along? Should there be another intelligent species apart from humans there? It is an alien world, after all, there might be intelligent alien surprises.
Hmm. I'll begin the initial draft tomorrow morning, when I'm actually awake and able to think without devolving into incoherent, misspelled ranting. I'll PM it to you before posting it up to see if it meets your standards, or in case you want anything changed.
You never know, after all.
