I did not say this. I am not here
Hey there folks, Aurethius here. Few things about me.
I read R.A. Salvatore's Drizzt series of books for escape. Whenever I want to read something relatively light, I go for him. Yes, he presents some deeper emotional topics, but he only presents them, he doesn't demand that you understand them to follow the story.
I read Frank Herbert's Dune series when I want to be reminded of what a smart man's book looks like, lest I forget in today's literary climate. I also cherish the old David Lynch film for the first book, but not the TV miniseries.
I have a personal distaste for many authors, and what I find especially irritating is a bad presentation of a character. I read several of an author's books, pass judgment, and waste no more time on their work. If you tried fishing in a lake, and you tried fishing on the river, do you really want to go and try fishing in the ocean? I'll keep the identities of those authors to myself for now, not going to come in here with guns blazing, heh.
I also have a personal distaste for some of the writers on this very board, as I've been reading what's available here for a good month or so, just to gauge the other writers.
There are times when writing can be an enjoyable competition. For me, the greatest competition between writers is when their characters are free to interact with one another. I enjoy pitting my creative mind against those of others, but how do you 'win' at writing? Do you have a book that sells more? Have more readers than they do? Use bigger words? Sure, if you want to go at it like that. Like a coward.
For me, the greatest victory of one writer over another is to Kill Their Character. Especially when they don't want you to. I'll admit, it's a past-time of mine. Not my ONLY past-time mind you, I'm not some kind of 'Serial Writer!'. Heavens no.
It's just something I like doing. That's why its here in the Intro thread, aye?
I've found myself on a great number of Star Wars Roleplaying Message Boards to satisfy that interest. There are few greater foes to fight than Force Users, few that are in a theme so damned prevalent on the internet as Star Wars anyway. You find a lot of weak writers in the Star Wars RP field, and personally, I think the Force is a crutch when it comes to combat writing. So is a lightsaber. You can do just about anything. You really have to think your opponent into a corner when he's a force user.
Other themes, genres and fictions I enjoy:
Avatar, the Last Airbender
Post-Apocalypse
Exalted
Farscape
The Dark Crystal
Heroes (or any similar 'Powers out of Nowhere!' theme)
Well, before this gets too big, I ought to actually post it. I'm interested in any games, I'm keeping my eyes open for folks looking to pick up other writers. I'm not one of those Type A personalities, and I don't think I'm the best writer in the world, but I do enjoy being asked questions about myself or what I like. It's the human in me.

Re: I did not say this. I am not here
Hey there, Aurethius!
There are always going to be writers that people don't like, be them professional or merely hobbyists. I can't expect everyone to like everyone else's writing here, and I think it's fairly safe to say that probably everyone has someone here whose writing they dislike. So long as we all are trying our best and working toward improvement, that is really all that can be asked. (Well, that, and sticking to our writing rules, of course.)
I'm a Star Wars fan myself, and I have found it to be rather difficult to come across good writers/role-players for that genre. I used to be a paying member of StarWars.com and their Hyperspace thing. There really wasn't any role-playing worth remembering, unfortunately.
Oh, wonderful -- another Avatar fan! I'm currently involved in an Avatar role-play myself here. It's such an amazing show, especially for being an American 'anime.'
Well, I hope that you enjoy yourself here and that you can find others writers that not only inspire you, but challenge you.
I think that's probably a really good philosophy. I think you should just read what you enjoy. It's really as simple as that. If you pick up a book (be it famous or not) and can't find yourself enjoying it for whatever reason, then there's no point in wasting your valuable time. There are far too many books in the world to be spending your time reading something that is just not worth it.I have a personal distaste for many authors, and what I find especially irritating is a bad presentation of a character. I read several of an author's books, pass judgment, and waste no more time on their work. Re: I did not say this. I am not here
I never really understood how you can hate the writing of someone else. Even if it is horrible, we all must have been there at one point, not all of us started out as fantastic.
Enjoy your stay anyhoo, and pip pip cheerio.

Huh, distaste for some of the writers on this board?
Well, you've went and gotten a few people to x out right there.
But, I lack the passion to care about things like that so I stayed to read the rest. You seem interesting enough. Welcome to FOG.

Hmmm, interesting Kill Their Character philosophy. I almost did that once, but then again I was the GM. xD
Welcome to the FOG, Aurethius!
I look forward to role-playing with you sometime. And Killing Your Character.
I'll tell you right now, however, that you won't be able to do that in any role-plays I host. Not without getting permission first.
I don't think of writing as a competition; I think of it as an alliance. ^^
I have been in a few battle RPG type role-plays, though, and it was quite fun.

Welcome to FoG, Aurethius. You seem like an intelligent and an interesting person. I look forward to seeing you around the boards.
I completely understand that there are going to be people in whatever role play settings whose writing will be disagreeable with you. I have found myself in similar situations. I have also read some writing on this board that I really don't appreciate, but I'm not going to name names.
I am a HUGE fan of Avatar: The Last Airbender, and I'm currently involved in two role plays on FoG centered around that show and its world. I also recently discovered Heroes, and I really loved it, but I have to wait an eternity until I can see the fourth season's episodes because I don't get NBC, and I have Dial-Up, so I can't watch it online. It's frustrating.
To clarify for Ragter, it's not just bad grammar and ideas that aren't well executed that contribute to bad writing. Sure, it's obvious that some people are going to be better writers than others, but even if someone is a really good writer, he or she may have a style that someone simply cannot enjoy. I know that a good example of this is Tolkien's The Lord of the Rings. Some people love it, others hate it. Some think the writing is excellent while others think its boring.

Thanks to Kathryn Lacey for backing me up here, and she’s right. A bad writer can present a great character, and vice versa. I may suffer from the fact that if I hate the writing, I hate the writer, but hopefully not all readers are as vindictive. I'm a grudge-holder.
Kathryn, please be sure to look me up if you’re seeking a fellow Avatar writer, I’ll appreciate it!

Good! If those few people I’ve ‘gotten to x out’ can’t deal with someone who dislikes them, let them pass me by. I will have lost nothing worth keeping.

I'm just being playful, don't take offense.

Oh yay! Someone actually got the self deprecating humor and retorted with equally self deprecating humor. You wouldn't believe how many people take what I say seriously.
You seem to be interested in a few genres I like to play so maybe we'll run into one another on the boards. I wouldn't blame you for killing one of my characters. They're all either alcoholics, whores, smart asses, or pansies. They desire it.

Well far be it from me to deny them their desires. I will see you around.

Re: I did not say this. I am not here
You're welcome, Aurethius.
If you like, I could put you on the waiting list for the Avatar game to which the link to the OoC is the text and the IC the banner in my signature. There isn't a very long waiting list any more. heh
If you don't want to be on the waiting list, that's fine. I did recently find a journal style role play off-site that is based one hundred fifty years after the events of the show. If you think you may be interested in that one, I'll give you the links to it.
That's not to say I'm trying to pull you away from this site right as you've so recently arrived. I only mean that if you're interested in an Avatar role play where you wouldn't have to wait, there's one elsewhere. I'm thinking about joining it, too, but I have my reservations. =3
