Whodunnit? Empty Whodunnit?

Post by Aesalon Mon Jun 01, 2009 8:34 pm

A few years ago I was lurking around a Murder Mystery RP (I dont' even remember which site it was on...) anyway, it turned out to be a pretty entertaining read - SO I was wondering if anyone would be interested in playing/moderating one of these. (I know they are a little more complicated than freeform RP, and honestly, I have no idea how the one I shadowed was administraded.) But, If there was enough interest in joining one of these in the future (Probably not until July.) I would be happy to look into the format and figure something out.

If not, just let this sink to the bottom and never be heard from again...

I really like this idea. I would love to be a part of it!

As for the administration of such an RP? I'm thinking if we get enough people (6+), then there should be a neutral moderator who distributes emails or private messages to each of the other characters giving them details of their character's recent history around about the time of the murder. That way we could do a proper "Whodunnit" in which each character is only sure of their own innocence (or guilt...)

Yeah, I think we would need at least 6 for this to run nicely (5 players and one moderator.)
If we get enough interest here in the next week or two I will start throwing together a plot and I can moderate, unless someone else would prefer to run it (I can play or moderate, I am not picky.)

Well, I don't know if this is still going on, but I love whodunits, so I'd join in on the fun!

I'd be interested - it looks like someone else wants to do something similar so it might be worth thinking about merging into one, although their idea is the inverse of normal so there's only one 'detective'. I'd rather do it the standard way, really.

One idea I had on another forum for the format was this - in the OOC, the GM sets the scene and describes a rough situation involving a 'victim' with the potential for a lot of enemies.

People then submit their character ideas - either 'detectives' or 'suspects'. Suspects must have a motive to murder the victim.

Suspects then 'audition' for the part of murderer by PMing the GM with a character idea with their murder plan (the more cunning and misleading the better).

The GM selects the suspect with the best plan to be the murderer. All suspects then get PM replies telling them whether it was them or not, and the IC begins with the GM describing the crime scene as it would be after the murderer had committed their crime, as well as PMing everyone with any individual bits of evidence that might be personal to them.

This way, you end up with a bunch of suspects with a motive and potentially a means. You also get the murder to be as creative and cunning as the best of the group's imagination allows.

Players would be free to interact with each other, swap information and lies, both in the thread and via PM, and even murder each other if there's mutual consent. All questions of evidence though, including NPC testimony, would have to be cleared via the GM.

I think this would work quite well and I'd be happy to run it or play it, depending on other people's preferences.

So...this looks pretty interesting, but I see that it has died...If people are still interested, could we still do it?
