The Artful Dodger

The Background

It's the beginning of the year 2520, just over a year since the infamous Captain Malcolm Reynolds used Asbach's (Mr. Universe) equipment to release a seriously disturbing broadcast revealing the planet Miranda, the Alliance's attempt to chemically control a planet, as well as the true origins of the Reavers. Mal's broadcast stirred the emotions of people across the universe, and ex-independent faction soldiers (browncoats) began recruiting any and all volunteer citizens to fight against the Alliance, in hopes to gain the freedom that they had fought for and lost Unification Day 2511.

All supporters of the independent faction are being fleshed out from the core, and are escaping to the sketchy planets in the outer rim. Most planets don't have the means to support the large numbers of people arriving, so piracy within the core is more active than ever before. Some outer rim planets are hostile to the newcomers, and many innocent people have fallen victim to such hostility. These outbursts have forced independent soldiers and citizens to lose trust with each other, and approaching an outer rim planet always merits extreme caution. As of now, soldiers of the independent faction are many, but they are spread out and formless. Word is that Captain Malcolm Reynolds has an extensive military base, but the location remains unknown to the masses for protection.




The Plot

Mal's secret base is located deep within Serenity Valley, and after a year of strengthening the defenses, it had become the most fortified independent base in all of the 'Verse. Due to Alliance suspicions, most of the more fighter-based ships have been docked and the only boats that the Browncoats were able to get ahold of in abundance were Firefly class freighters. Fortunately, the Browncoats have some of the best crewmen, so most of these ships have been outfitted with weapons systems.

For a while things ran smoothly, and the independents were busy planning a strategic strafing run on a major Alliance space station. Just before these plans were set into action, Serenity Valley was surrounded and attacked from all directions. The base went into a panic, and Mal ordered an immediate evacuation. The escaping independents were slaughtered in a fashion resembling the loss at Serenity Valley 9 years prior. J.W. and Sally, aboard a freshly refurbished and outfitted Firefly called the Artful Dodger, are one of the few that made it off the ground and away from Hera. They have lost contact with everyone from the base, and have to make a decision as to what they should do next.


The Cast

Name: Johnathan Winthrope

Bio: J.W. used to be one of the best officers that the Alliance had, but that was before they decided to pull his world out from under his feet. He was accused of treason by one of his superior officer for supposedly selling Alliance secrets to the infamous Mal Reynolds, captain of the pirate freighter Serenity. In all honesty, it had been the accusing officers that had been selling secrets, but there always has to be a scapegoat. He was dishonorably discharged from service and branded with a rather large "T" in the middle of his right forearm so that he would always remember his transgressions against the Alliance.

J.W. spent the next few years as the captain of his own boat, the Artful Dodger, and he had even fallen into the life of crime that he had been exiled for "helping." After the broadcasting of the footage that Serenity had taken from Miranda, J.W. decided to join forces with the Browncoats and take down the Alliance once and for all.

Bio: At 16, Sally began her training as a companion, and at 21 she officially started her career. For thirteen years, Sally was a very successful member of the illustrious and noble Companion’s Guild. Traveling the Core, many of her clients were high-ranking members of a Core World's administration, though she was not selective on only rank. When the broadcast was emitted across the ‘Verse, she questioned her clients on the matter, and was met with a much darker fate than she had anticipated: she was branded as an independent sympathetic and banished from the Core.

The Alliance had little control over the Guild, and could not remove her from her career. Because she was such an important member, The Guild agreed to give her all the support she needed, though they (and she) realized that her career as a Companion was likely over. The Alliance didn’t bother to try and attack the Guild on the matter; as long as she stayed out of the Core, they wouldn't be hunt her down. It is needless to say that it was detriment to her survival that she joined the independent faction. Her harsh treatment by the Alliance officials gave her a personal reason to do so.

Sally can fire a weapon easily enough, but her true skills lie in melee combat. After displaying these skills she was easily accepted as basic infantry for the independents. Sally chose to hide the fact that she was once a Companion, and keeps in contact with the Guild only when she is in desperate need of information or supplies. The only item from her past life is a beautifully crafted one handed sword, and two small daggers. These weapons were made personally for her, and she fights best with them.

Eventually, she found the base at Serenity Valley, though she never personally met Captain Mal (which she had heard rumors from Inara about). When the Alliance attacked, she ran aboard the nearest Firefly, and was lucky enough to be aboard the Artful Dodger, one of the few that survived.

Bio: Born and raised upon the core planet of Ariel, Theo’s childhood was very pampered and planned out. She attended every school her parents (adventurers and scholars of the verse) could possibly find for her and did so proudly, growing to be a well rounded young lady, intelligent and beautiful alike.
Upon her 16th birthday when her mother caught fatally ill and passed on, everything changed. She quit school to take care of her sisters, Adriella at the time being a newborn and Moira just barely a pre-teen, while her father, who took his wife’s death considerably hard, continued to wander about the Verse always looking for something but never fully comprehending what it was.

Three years passed before he finally returned with his new bride, Miriam and since then Theo still has never been able to forgive him. She left home not long after his return and in spite of her father joined the war alongside the Independents. Although was never one to actually step foot upon the battle field, Theo's medical know-how saved quite a lot of lives at the Battle of Serenity - even despite their loss. Shortly after their falling on Serenity she just began hopping about from place to place, taking the knowledge she learned during her younger years to benefit herself in able to succeed in society, saving those she deemed worthy of a second chance. She's never been typically one to believe in God, but her anger at her father has put her in the position to where her mentality is driven on the basis of second chances. Theo only believes certain people are redeemable, and as for everyone else...well if there is a God, they're his to deal with, come what may.

Shortly after Malcolm Reynolds' call out to the Verse, Theo once again found herself running back to the cause as well as an old familiar from school. Simon Tam. It was only with his help that she managed to make it off Serenity alive for a second time, and now finds herself caught within the furious winds of the Alliance and even more confused about her life's path than she was before.

Bio: Leon was a colonist on the planet Miranda, in orbit around the protostar Burnham, the eighth and final planet in the Blue Sun system. Miranda was as far from the Core as one could get. There were 30 million colonists ready to settle in on Miranda, including Leon and his wife and son.

Leon had dedicated his life to serving the Alliance, the most stable option in his opinion. He ran trading runs from the Alliance planets in the Core to the Alliance-controlled planets in the Rim, avoiding pirates whenever possible or bringing an Alliance escort whenever necessary. When he was offered the opportunity to settle on a new planet, he immediately took the opportunity. He saw this as his reward for having served the Alliance so faithfully through the years.

In the middle of his last run, a supply train from Ariel to Miranda, the Alliance reported that they had lost contact with Miranda. Leon, still on Ariel, demanded to know what had happened. They told him that the terraforming had failed, and that none had survived. They told him he was lucky.

Leon spent the next 14 years avoiding the Alliance. Rejecting their offers to continue his previous job, Leon moves to Lilac, a moon of New Canaan, the second planet of the Blue Sun system. The planet is close enough as he dares go to Miranda, though he can’t bear leaving the system permanently. When the Reavers show up in the area, Leon offered his services to those who tried to repel them, be it pirates or local militia.

It didn’t take long for the local populace to realize that the Reavers were too strong. And the Alliance refused to recognize their existence, meaning they would receive to help. After a few years of futile fighting and lucky escapes, Leon settles down again on Ariel.
Fourteen years after the death of his family on Miranda, a broadcast is sent through the ‘Verse, proving the Alliance’s involvement with the deaths of the 30 million colonists. Leon immediately goes in search of those who had sent out the broadcast, determined to extract revenge for his family, and for being betrayed by those he had spent his entire life serving.

Edit: It's been a while since I've seen the movie. What shall we say happened to the Reavers? Are they still around? Did alliance wipe them out when Mal dragged 'em out against them?

Welll....I don't think even the mighty Alliance could wipe out -all- of the Reavers. Maybe they got a lot of them but there are still some roaming around?

I think Reavers would be a constant threat, even if much diminished. They wouldn't have all been at that planet when the Alliance encountered them. They would have been spread across the known galaxy. And who knows if they have a way of spreading their...disease? Can't quite remember what it was exactly anymore...

In one of the first few episodes of the series (for the life of me, I can't remember which one), they rescued one man off of a ship that had been raided by Reavers and he'd fell into a state where he started to act more like a Reaver. Maybe there are other ways, though. Maybe the Reavers carry the mutated form of Pax in their bloodstream and could pass it in some way....

That'd be interesting, but maybe too reminiscent of a zombie movie instead of Firefly lol
