Electronics. (warning:crazy awesome tech)
I got into a conversation with some people, and it shifted to electronics, and I ended up discovering some pretty incredible stuff
http://www.panaceauniversity.org/
Its actually possible to create electricity from electricity. Essentially there is a way to harness the Back EMF (electro magnetic field) generated by electric motors to power the motor itself. Among many other things.

Hmmm, interesting. I never realized that. Learn something new everyday!

Well, in theory, such machines are possible. But in praxis, they aren't. You can't make energy. Energy exists and you can only change it's form. (and we're still very limited at this)
The most Energy you can get out of anything is getting it out of matter. Einstein found out that matter is nothing else than energy, in another form. And lots of it. (E=mc²)
So the cleanest and most efficient way to get energy is through dissolving matter into energy, which is essentially the purpose of the fusion reactor. There is an experimental fusion reactor being built in france. There were successful fusion reactors built, before, too, but they were small scale and they did not produce any energy by themselves, yet. This one is supposed to be the stepping stone, they want to build functional ones after this one. (In around.. 20 to 40 years)

Yes. However, Energy from energy is possible. If you put X amount of energy into something, then you get X amount of energy out, right? The basic theory is that not all energy is put of an engine is put out in a currently usable method, and it is possible to reclaim it and use it to power itself.
As electricity runs off a circuit, it inevitably goes back to the start. Although 100% cannot be reclaimed, some can, and this can be used to bolster the circuit to a level where it can support the machines it is powering indefinately, but it will not "build up" as that would be adding more energy.
or something like that

Eh? Whatever you do, you lose energy through friction and whatnot.
And yes, you can increase every machine's efficiency, that's what we've been doing the past 100 years. Yes you may be able to recycle some of the still wasted energy.
But getting more Energy out than you put in? Impossible. You can only put Energy in one form into it, and get it out in your desired form. That's what is an engine.

Yes, that is true, energy from nothing is impossible.
It does possess some good potential though.
